100% linen pillow with beautiful embroidery. weaving, done entirely by hand over many days. These are becoming very hard to find. This pillow is just as great on the back as on the front - the white side is beautifully textured and quite minimal. The dimensions are 14 x 23".

Oddity: the embroidery wasn't finished on the other side (both sides have same motif) so we finished the little dots in the flower at the bottom in hot pink! It's really cool. Photos coming soon.

General information about Ouno's quilts, either the 3x3 grid or 4x4 grid:
This mod geometric quilt - or "anti-quilt" - is painstakingly handmade from 9 beautiful vintage designer scarves. It functions as a blanket or decorative bedspread - technically a coverlet - not as a duvet cover or really meant to sleep under. Lay this flat bedcovering over your duvet to produce a more finished and interesting look. It's also reversible - the other side is a beautiful pale solid hemp/cotton blend, for when you are tired of colour. The quilt is probably not for kids or pets to play on, though the hemp/cotton side is really tough.

NOTE: The two last photos are just to show the hemp on the reverse side, and the stitching style I use to join back to front. They are of a previous quilt, but this quilt will be exactly the same.

This 3x3 grid quilt will cover most of a queen size bed. A full bedspread for a queen is 102 x 120", which allows for covering and folding under pillows, and falling all the way to the floor. This quilt is not intended to do that. At approx 89" square it covers the main part of the bed and pillows. But it's not tiny - it's shown here on a king-size bed to give a better view of its total pattern, but it more fully covers top and sides of a queen size mattress. If you want a larger bedspread, see our 4x4 grid quilts - they are approx 100" x 100". This quilt has a different appearance because 30" square scarves have a different graphic quality than the 2" square scarves we make most of our quilts from.

The hemp (hemp is very like linen, but looks more modern) is a subtle, mod tone of pale sage/khaki/taupe that literally goes with virtually all color schemes and decor styles, modern or traditional. The contrast of the scarf side with the hemp side turned down at the head of the bed is visually interesting. The edging is top-stitched and then finished in a very discreet blanket stitch.

THE SCARVES

Each vintage scarf is like an abstract painting in its own right. All scarves are 100% silk with the exception of the pink and brown Pierre Balmain, which is acetate - these were common in the 1970s.

The 9 silk scarves ( 3x3 grid) are:
1 superb vintage Jean Patou, Paris. This one has some fading and dye runs but it's almost like a patina, or battle scars and it's such good silk that I included it anyway.

2 superb "Vera" scarves -- Vera Neumann was the undisputed master of geometric scarf design -- including one of her "ladybug" or top collection;

Most of the printed signatures are visible on the quilt. Any labels/strips that have been cut off in the sewing process are included in your package.

Note: These scarves are vintage and therefore some of them may have imperfections including fading or minor dye runs, blurring of colour, mends, etc. that we have deemed acceptable and that we consider to be part of their beauty and that contribute to the whole. We don't used trashed scarves. However the whole point of the bedspread is to use and admire these vintage works of art, so we do not like to reject every scarf that has an imperfection. Some of the scarves are such amazing examples of design that we think they should be saved and included regardless of flaws. In almost every case we embellish the flaw with subtle patches or embroidery, so that they look deliberate. None of this is visible when you look at the bedspread as a whole. Please ask us if you are unsure. The overall effect is quite pristine.

100% unisex.
Machine-washable (delicate/cold) and 100% pre-shrunk. Light iron if you wish. Drycleaning works too.

This is an original design by Ouno designer Sarah Gee. It's a pillow made for the Private Investigator/spy in everyone, whether your idol is Sam Spade, Agent 99, Bogart, Chandler or Maxwell Smart. Each pillow is made from a vintage trench coat. Please specify which pillow or colour you want! All of the details on the pillows are made from the original coats, and we only choose the best coats, always original gabardine and always a top vintage brand, which usually include London Fog, Burberry, Aquascutum, Bentley's of London, Moore's, etc.

Because of their neutral colours these work well in most decor schemes, are great conversation pieces, are "readymade" art using the ancient and also modern technique of bricolage (making do with materials intended originally for another purpose), and are just generally hilarious. Plus you can hide things in the pockets.

Background on trench coats:

Thomas Burberry pioneered this style of coat for officers in WWI, as well as the weight of cotton gabardine from which it is made.

Trenchcoats, detectives and bad weather go together - that's the basis of the film noir genre. It's a little-known fact that Raymond Chandler wrote some of his earliest detective stories in Vancouver, and that is why it's always raining in the fllm noir detective genre. Did you ever wonder why it was always raining in sunny LA? Chandler's "Playback: A Graphic Novel" was set in Vancouver and rejected by Hollywood for that reason. Chandler rewrote it as the novel "Playback" the year before he died, substituting California for Vancouver. It was published posthumously. Noir was a 1940s/50s genre, with many returning WWII officers finding work as P.I.s., hence their world weary, hard-boiled irony.

Ouno Design's Original Trenchcoat Detective Bags - The Agent 99 unisex bag, and the Raymond Chandler unisex laptop bag.

The Agent 99 is shown here. This one is made from an unusual caramel-coloured "Falcon" trench coat. The strap has original stainless-steel d-rings, plus one extra d-ring on the side.

The bag has two side pockets for small items, closed by buttons, and two interior pockets from the original trench coat. These bags are tough, weatherproof, washable and cool.

Despite or because of its name, the Agent 99 is as popular with men as with women. You're free to call it the "Maxwell Smart" instead, but as fans of the show know, Smart was not smart, and on balance we prefer 99. Made from a vintage trench coat, the Agent 99 is compact but features loops for pens, pockets for a PDA, cell phone and/or mp3 player. Lots of room for a notebook, novel... magnifying glass, spy camera, or hidden microphone.

Reversible Modern Bedspread made from Vintage Ticking Fabric - Queen Size

This modern bedspread is made in a simple pattern of subtle colour blocks of vintage ticking textile. It's the standard queen size for a bedspread: 102" x 120". Its backing is new organic cream-coloured hemp, for a totally neutral look. Both sides prefer the same washing method, and both sides are very, very durable and will keep their looks for a long time.

Ticking is the instantly recognizable fabric traditionally used to cover pillows and mattresses. Its strong thick weave was designed to prevent the stuffing of bedding (straw, horsehair, feathers) from poking through, and as a result it's durable and abuse-able. We have loved the varied striping of ticking for a long time and this bedspread seemed the perfect use for our collection. This particular quilt is made from Swedish and American tickings.

All fabric is pre-washed in hot, preshrunk in a hot dryer. The best way to wash it is on regular heat, damp dry in the dryer and then iron. This fabric inherently looks good a tiny bit wrinkled, so don't worry about the ironing too much unless you like a crisp look. Dry cleaning is fine too and will give you a very finished look.

Modern Grid Pillow from Vintage 1960s or 70s Textile - Orange, Red, White and Brown Geometric

Mod, visually interesting pattern, made from a salvaged vintage 100% cotton textile in perfect condition. These pillows came from a really fantastic mod set of curtains in unusually good condition. No marks. One of the signs of an expensive textile is the number of colours - this has two oranges, a red, brown and white. Differences between the oranges and reds are subtle but they add to the overall interest. The texture is great, too, a really durable heavy cotton weave, very high quality. While this fabric has a mod, semi-retro look, it's not dated in the way many patterns are. This pillow would be versatile in a mix and it will stand out as a bold option. The brown and cream are good tones and will get along with other colours. 20inX20in (51cmX51cm), washable, zippered closure. All-new 100% duck feather insert.

Sustainable fillings are definitely still in the experimental stage. We are also experimenting with kapok and natural latex fills but so far none of them perform remotely like feather. We avoid foam because of its environmental dubiousness, but we'll happily provide it for allergy reasons - just ask us.

PS funny photograph - this pillow isn't lopsided, it was just stuffed in a hurry and needs a massage! The beauty of feather is that once the insert is straightened, the pillow stays nice and square and puffy all its life.

Authentic Japanese Indigo Floor Pillow - Soft Furniture

These are reversible, feather-filled floor pillows, all approx 31" x 32". They are 100% handmade at every level of production. These pillows are substantial enough to be considered furniture. They are well-stuffed, reinforced and sturdy. They are feather-filled, but they also have a small foam core for additional comfort and a small amount of springiness.

These pillows are made from fabric produced at one of a few last traditional indigo workshops in Kyoto, Japan, using shibori resist-dyeing with authentic hand-produced indigo dye, some of the best indigo dye in the world. See the paragraph at bottom for more information.

Shibori is the Japanese technique of resist dyeing, a very sophisticated form of tye dye that dates from the 8th C or earlier for the decoration of kimonos, cushions and quilts. The required design is securely tied or stitched onto the fiber before it is dyed. These large textile squares were produced at Aizenkobo Dyer's Workshop, one of the last traditional studios in Japan still doing their own authentic indigo-dyeing by hand. Each pillow top is made from a collectible square of shibori - these were produced for decorative purposes or for fancy furoshiki, which are the squares of cloth produced as wrappings for gifts and tied with elaborate decorative tying methods. Each one is a collector's item.

The other side of each pillow is made from an authentic japanese indigo "noren" or doorway curtain, in very similar indigo tones. While more common than the top piece, these are excellent examples of noren brought back from Japan in March.

"Aizenkobo is an indigo-dyeing workshop that has been in operation for three generations. Aizenkobo produces and promotes indigo handicraft work using the traditional Japanese method. Its "eggplant" blue is impossible to reproduce with artificial chemical pigments. Natural indigo has been considered a valuable blue dyeing material for centuries. It can be extracted from the fiber of several different plants.In Japan, the only useable indigo plant is polygonum, which is well-known for its outstanding deep color. Fermented polygonum, the dye pigment, is called "sukumo." In addition to the "sukumo," wheat husk powder, limestone powder, lye ash, and sake are also mixed into the vats to complete the liquid dye. Then for approximately a week, the dye naturally begins to ferment until it reaches its usable state. Indigo threads and materials--specifically cotton and linen--are generally soaked and dried 15 to 20 times. This is the only way to deepen the color. The dyed thread and materials are sun-dried, which is when the deep indigo blue appears most strongly on the fiber surface. Indigo also strengthens the material. Indigo dyeing is considered one of the most beautiful dyeing techiniques known to man. Indigo dyed materials soften with use, and the quality of the color's richness increases with time."

Vintage Supergraphic Pillow - Made from Mod Black and White 60s Swedish Retro Curtains

One 15" x 15" decorative throw pillow made from a heavy, collectible vintage textile, probably 1960s, and it seems to be a strong cotton weave with surface texture very like barkcloth. This was made from a set of vintage curtains with a Made in Sweden label. The black and white and the geometric pattern is very in right now. This is a classic and will become an heirloom. The white is not a pure white but a very neutral off-white.

Geometric Brown and White Pillow from Vintage Curtains in Corbusier style Berber Pattern

This pillow was made from vintage synthetic curtains, probably 1960s. This diagonal lattice pattern originated in the abstract geometric designs of handmade Berber carpets (not the modern commercial wool carpets known as berber now). Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright and many others considered those carpets key to modern rooms. This fabric, like the cream coloured one we're showing here for the sake of comparison (sold out a few years ago), is meant to reference that look. Because this fabric is a loose weave, we have backed it in a matching brown muslin cotton. Despite the loose weave, these are incredibly durable. Very well-made, very strong fibers. It shouldn't pull. We are using these in our studio and they show no signs of wear yet. The back is identical - we don't use cheap backings.

Pillow is 20"x20" (51cmX51cm), with stainless steel zippered closure, and sustainably-made, all-new 100% duck feather insert. We can ship with or without the insert. 10 dollars less, plus cheaper shipping, without insert.

An heirloom is by definition something that's made to last - it doesn't fall apart, and it's beautiful regardless of trends.

We have a number of these - we don't what kind of living room these curtains came from, but it was obviously immense.

These pillows have hand-dyed freestyle geometric designs. They have the look of photograms or just photographic negatives. Only 6 of these were made; each is different. They work well alone, with other pillows, or in a group of 2 or 3. Price for a set of 3 is $200 including puffy feather insert and good zipper with round stainless steel pull. Get smart! This throw pillow is made from a very high-end vintage trench coat (slightly different than shown). Almost all the hardware, pockets and features from the original coat are included. The coat's original buttons are flat and comfortable to lean on. This is a minimalist but also fantastic conversation piece for your living room, works with both masculine and feminine styles, and you can stash your remote or listening device or whatever spy device you might need to conceal, since the pockets remain functional. You can take the label off, but we like to include the labels, particularly if they have vintage appeal. Both sides are equally detailed.

Pillow is 20" square (51cmX51cm). The feather insert is all-new 100% sterile feathers in 100% cotton. Strong, attractive zipper with nice silver pull. This will last forever! Trench coats are made from a strong cotton gabardine. They were invented for English officers in the trenches in WWI by Thomas Burberry, founder of the Burberry fashion house. All of their hardware is military in origin.

If you don't want this colour, trench coats come in various colours, classic tan, cream, beige, black, olive green and blue. Occasionally, too, non-traditional colours like red and pink. Ask us what we have in stock.

SHIPPING NOTE: We can ship flat without the form insert inside; shipping is then $4.00 and pillow is then $90. Convo us if you'd like to do it this way. 20" x 20" is a standard size for feather or foam forms for decorative throw pillows, but a poorly made form will alter the look of your pillow significantly.

We can do sustainable bamboo filling in all our pillows for an upcharge of $20. We do not use bamboo as our regular fill, however, because we feel it's still too hard and lumpy. Sustainable fillings are definitely still in the experimental stage. We are also experimenting with kapok and natural latex fills but so far none of them perform remotely like feather. We avoid foam because of its environmental dubiousness, but we'll happily provide it for allergy reasons - just ask us.

This is from a set of pillows from an unusual screenprint, possibly a set of giant banners? It has a distinct David Hockney look - I'm guessing mid-1980s. We got several large rolls of this fine outdoor fabric with a pleasing matte sheen. The seller told us that when colours are being tested for outdoor fabric, and the print rollers aren't yet fully charged with ink and the fabric hasn't been adjusted inside the rollers yet, you get a long length of this almost hand-dyed looking fabric. It looks even better in person - it's a blue that goes with many schemes and looks great with all shades of wood in particular. Because it's outdoor fabric it's indestructible, machine-washable, and can happily be taken outdoors or safely be put on the floor or be flung across the room. Great for kids' rooms/playrooms. And chic.
