Enjoy spinning this wonderful fiber without all the work of washing and carding. It was prepared by a commercial woolen mill and spins like a dream.

The roving is virtually VM free!

The staple length varies from 6 - 10 inches.

Scottish Blackface wool has long, thick, strong fiber best suited for rugs, slippers or anywhere durability is required.

It is perfect for rug work because of its long staple and low-crimp fiber. Whether you are weaving, locker hooking, or felting this is some of the finest carpet fiber you will find.

You can knit, crochet or felt yourself a rug.

Because of wool's natural fire resistant properties, you can even use Scottish Blackface wool to make yourself a cosy hearth rug.

Among it's many uses, this fiber can be spun into strong warp or drafted off the carder and used as a lofty weft. It makes strong straps for felted purses; durable slippers and socks (even if you just use it for the heel and toe).

In socks and mittens, I have combined one or more plies of Scottish Blackface fiber with plies of Merino to combine both softness and strength.

Wool is an insulator keeping our sheep cool in summer and warm in winter. When I'm shearing in the sun, I'm always amazed at how hot the outside of a black fleece can get, but next to the skin where my hands run the shears it's cool to the touch. In winter, when given the option, our sheep prefer to be outside even when temperatures drop to -25F (-35C). If it works for them, it'll work for you.

This adorable ring is just plain fun: to wear, to admire, and to share. It's like having a little furry friend to keep you smiling all day long. Each one has a unique expression and this one is shown in the first two photos.

Made from handspun humanely collected dog fur and natural colored wool, this hand knit ring is a soft reminder of those warm four-legged friends we love so well. The fur for this ring is not from my dogs (some pictured in the last photo), but from an aquaintance's Alaskan Malamute.

The eyes are glass beads, and the nose is hand-sculpted polymer clay.

Size: This ring is quite flexible and will comfortably fit ring sizes US 7 - 11.

Care: Wet fiber is weaker than dry, so you'll want to remove it when you're doing everyday wet things: washing your hands, in the shower, doing dishes, etc. Hand wash occasionally in warm water. Let air dry off your finger.

Why Dog Fur?
Dog fur is similar to angora and is very soft to the touch. Over time the softer undercoat will fluff up more. The fur fibers are squashed a bit during spinning and knitting, but will straighten up with wear making the ring look just like real fur pelt.

This fur was collected during regular grooming. It was not trimmed, but brushed out for extra softness in the spun yarn.

Contrary to popular rumour: Clean dog fur will not smell like dog (even when wet), nor will it attract fleas. Rather it is like other fine luxury fibers such as mohair and cashmere.

During spinning and manufacture, the fur is washed and sanitized. Because the dander and oils are washed away, it can often be used even by those who are allergic to dogs.

I used the lighter parts of their coat.

Scottish Blackface Ram Horn 004L (Monsieur)

This particular horn is cracked, because Monsieur was fighting with another ram when he was about a year old. The crack does not go all the way through the horn, but it is definitely thinner there.

Size: This horn is from a two year old ram named Monsieur.
It is 31 inches (79 cm) from base to tip along the outside curve and 15 inches (38 cm) on the inside curve.

Weight: About 2 lbs (900 g).

We raise Scottish Blackface sheep here on our farm where every sheep has a name. Each horn is as unique as the animal who grew it.

All our horns have their bone core removed and have been cleaned by our Dermestid beetles, so they come prepared for you to get creative.

Summer Rain Scarf - lacy knit beaded long skinny scarf

Sunny Alberta is usually... well, sunny, but it does have it's fits of exceptionally wet and stormy weather.

When it is raining almost every day, the sun still manages to poke through the clouds and I enjoy the fresh lush green, rich blue of a rain washed sky and glowing white, sun kissed clouds. I created this scarf from the inspiration of these fresh-air days.

Using white yarn as the base, I knit beads into the tails of the scarf (128 altogether) and added embroidery thread to create a delightful wash of blues and greens along the main body. The whole is knit in a lace pattern long enough to give you several styling options. It naturally rolls up at the edges to give the scarf more body and a soft rope-like appearance.

Size: 88 inches (7 feet 4 inches or 223 cm) long x 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) wide.

Care: Machine washable on the gentle cycle, but avoid washing with other garments with buttons or hooks that may catch in the lace.

Whether you want: a cushy rest for your wrist at the office; a bit of warmth; or a funky fashion statement, this beautiful cuff fits the bill.

This stylish cuff is made from luxurious dog fur that was humanely collected from one of my Labrador crosses; "Houdini". This exotic natural resource isn't used in commercial yarns, because it is difficult to process -- it is typically collected and spun by hand. It's so soft and inviting, don't be surprised if people ask to touch it.

The fibers are all handspun, hand-dyed and handknit.

I blended Houdini's fur with natural black wool to give more stretch and durability to the yarn. It's about 50/50 Houdini fur to wool.

The Dorset was hand-dyed in varigated shades of purple, light navy and royal blue.

This unisex cuff will fit a medium to large wrist. To check your size, slip your hand through an 10 inch loop. It comfortably fits a 7 to 9 inch wrist (or smaller), but you need to measure your hand to make sure you can put it on.

Care: Hand wash in warm water. Air dry.

Fleece 7 lbs 14 oz Greyface ewe (Ping) - finely skirted grey wool fleece - 66 -

The first photo shows "Ping" soon after she was sheared. The 2nd and 3rd photos show parts of this fleece.

Ping is a Scottish Blackface x Border Leicester (aka Greyface) ewe.

Her fleece has quite unique coloring. It has medium fiber and a long staple for a Greyface -- about 9.5 inches. It has been finely skirted. It's very clean and has little VM (vegetable matter: bits of hay). Her wool is about half way between a SBF and a BL fleece, so it has little crimp, is very long and not quite as fine fibered as a BL fleece.

Ping was born black, but has become more white giving her fleece a soft shifting grey color comprised of a blend of white, silver and black fibers. Her natural color can be enjoyed for what it is, or overdyed for a tweed or heather look.

I blade shear (non-electric) our sheep using a shearing stand, so the fleece comes off in two pieces (a left and right side). The last photo shows our shearing process (although I usually don't have help). We do not jacket our sheep, so it contains some vegetable matter. The VM is minimal and typically comes out during fiber preparation (washing and combing or carding).

Heinz 57 Cuff - humane dog fur and wool

Knit from handspun yarn, this cuff contains fur from a German Shepherd, Black Lab, Alaskan Malamute and a few of my mixed breed dogs. Some of my dogs are shown in the last photo.

Pure breds are all very nice, but a good mutt is a real treasure.

I blended each type of fur with matching natural colored wool to create the grey tones you see here.

Dog fur is similar to angora and is very soft to the touch. Over time the softer undercoat will fluff up more. The fur fibers are squashed a bit during spinning and knitting, but will straighten up with wear making the cuff look more like real fur pelt.

All the dog fur is collected during regular grooming. I do not trim our dogs, rather I brush out the fur for extra softness in the spun yarn.

Contrary to popular rumor: Clean dog fur will not smell like dog (even when wet), nor will it attract fleas. Rather it is like other fine luxury fibers such as mohair and cashmere.

During spinning and manufacture, the fur is washed and sanitized. Because the dander and oils are washed away, it can often be used even by those who are allergic to dogs.
