[Though she was an artist in the mid to latter part of the century]. One of her favorite subjects was her daughter, sometimes shown in both tender yet questionably erotic form. Despite that, there was both a tenderness and powerful energy to these photographs. it was through these that i was inspired to recreate.

wood panel was first sketched out then treated with cold wax to create a glowing effect to the grain and also provide a surface to which the oils would adhere without bleeding with the natural grain of the wood. the wax is heated to a smooth consistency, and is absorbed into the wood. after curing, i begin layering on the oil paint. not only the benefits listed above occur, but the wax also provides a luminous quality to each piece, allowing light to become trapped and refracted in such a way that makes the painting seem to "float". nothing i have tried in any other medium has this sort of effect. this is a different approach to working in wax than the traditional encaustic method [where pigment is used mixed with wax and applied hot].

additional benefits of wax paintings is that they require no varnish, and over time, as the wax and pigments harden, it can be buffed to a high sheen. care is to be taken not to scratch the surface or in keeping the painting in a high heat area.

special care is to be taken as to not scratch the surface of the painting, though over time, the surface itself will harden with age, but retaining the beauty of a fresh piece. obviously, it's not advisable to have your painting stored or placed in a high heat environment.

no varnish or sealant is required with an encaustic painting. by using a soft cloth, you can "polish" the painting to a high sheen, going with the grain is highly recommended.

for more examples of my encaustic works, visit my gallery wing at http://six06.com/blog/art/encaustic/.

NOTE: the last three photographs show the progression of the work.

It is the story of a beautiful woman, being sung to by a man who is in love with her, but understands if she rejects him because he is too poor for her.

The painting has been in several shows and exhibits throughout 2007 and 2008, it is framed in a light oak frame and is ready to hang.

I am in need of clearing out my space to make room for newer paintings and this is one that is up for immediate sale, at a greatly reduced price than I've had listed in shows. It is, however, for pick up/drop off only, as the size itself would be too troublesome and expensive to have shipped anywhere. Please convo me to make arrangements.

[as seen in the listing]. this piece, however, was done in oils. i was rather new to the medium, but the reason i moved into oils was how they seemed to do a greater job with translating light and shadows much better than acrylic. this painting was an exploration in that. the spotlights and reflected neon in the windows are my favorite parts about the painting. it's a rather unusual composition, which just adds to the appeal, in my opinion.

I am in need of clearing out my space to make room for newer paintings and this is one that is up for immediate sale, at a greatly reduced price than I've had listed in shows. I used to stretch my own canvases, as evidenced by this piece, which is ready to hang, as most of my paintings are, after having been on display previously.

I had taken my first trip to New Orleans and had come home completely inspired by the city and my experience. this painting is based on a photo that i had taken while in a cafe. i had also discovered gel medium and worked it into this piece with all that funky texture. seemed perfect for this. there is something i miss about this naive work that i once did. being a self taught artist, i like to see the growth between works, but at times am very nostalgic for the good old days when i was eager to explore new mediums and styles. [well, that is not entirely true ... i am still just as eager].

I am in need of clearing out my space to make room for newer paintings and this is one that is up for immediate sale, at a greatly reduced price than I've had listed in shows.
FAITH encaustic hand painted giclee wax and pigment with oil

$80.00
this is another one of my handpainted giclee productions. printed using archival quality dyes and treated with kamar varnish for added protection, this item is sure to last a very long time with proper care. more durable than common prints, the process involving giclees ensures superb reproduction of an original image, duplicating even the most delicate of strokes, coming as close to the original painting than any other printing process in existence.

mounted on an 8 x 8 inch wood frame, item is ready for framing or can be hung as is, without the unsightly sides unfinished, the printing process creates a mirror image, wrap around, so the sides bleed effortlessly and ensures a continuity throughout.

the painting is called "FAITH", based on the original which was featured in EL CORAZON exhibit in Dallas at the Bath House Cultural Center [original is available here in my etsy shop]. the handpainting on this particular giclee included application of wax, as was the original, enhancing the giclee with additional metallic and carbon pigment, and application of additional oil paint to bring out the lines and color, deepening it further.

the expense for producing a giclee is rather costly, but the quality of the return is definitely worth it.

NOTE: handpainted with oil paint and wax, a process called "encaustic", using heat to fuse the layers of color. the last photo in the set is the original from which this giclee was produced. the painting is affixed with several coats of varnish for protection and a vibrancy unmatched by the dyes of the printing process, which in itself, is quality work. the white spots or dots seen are the result of reflected light from the scanner. it also shows you the texture of the canvas upon which this painting is printed upon.

if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Frida Kahlo is very stylized in a "low brow / big eye / big head" sort of way. she is surrounded by two black doves and an array of falling leaves and tendrils of red ribbon.

with a bit of an asian twist, she is wearing a kimono covered in golden chrysanthemums [small enough to mimic the cempasuchil -- marigold -- flowers in her hair. her under robe is detailed with curlicues of different shades of blue.

the overall tone is very subdued, with an array of different and contrasting colors that have been muted so as not to distract from the tranquility in her face. there is subtle lightening of the area near her crown of thorns, further adding to that feeling.

not entirely without any vices, she holds a very slim cigarette in her right hand, giving this piece an over all balance.

i've also included a photo of the wooden egg [it is the only egg i ever considered keeping for myself. it is not for sale, i'm afraid.].

- - - - - - - - - - - -

PRINT INFORMATION:

this listing offers several sizes [please convo me with your specification BEFORE processing payment so that i may adjust your invoice]:

5 x 7 inch ----- $15.00
8 x 11 inch -- $25.00
10 x 14 inch --- $30.00
15 x 20 inch --- $45.00

the process used for printing is Pigment Based on Photo Satin archival paper.

here is what my printer has to say about pigment based printing:

Estimated time for 1st detectable fading, under glass, typical indoor illumination: 150+ years
Water resistance: Fairly but not totally resistant
Graininess: Very little graininess -- seldom visible

if you have any questions, please convo me.

$150.00
printed using archival quality dyes and treated with kamar varnish for added protection, this item is sure to last a very long time with proper care. more durable than common prints, the process involving giclees ensures superb reproduction of an original painting, duplicating even the most delicate of strokes and weave of the canvas, coming as close to the original painting than any other printing process in existence.

"LA VIDA LOCA" measures 10 inches x 12 inches. She is from the series of Muertos that i did october/november 2009. this particular version is several inches larger than the original which was 8 x 10. the canvas is stretched over wooden bars and then enhanced with acrylic oil paint and sealed with a protective kamar varnish sealant. the sides are painted black so no frame is needed.

the original "LA VIDA LOCA" was featured in the "DIA DE LAS CHINGONAS" exhibition recently. this new handpainted giclee is an opportunity to own an original of sorts. the expense for producing a giclee is rather costly, but the quality of the return is definitely worth it. it's difficult to distinguish from the original painting.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

NOTE: the last image in this listing is that of the ORIGINAL. i have included it so you can see the subtle differences in the giclee and the orignal.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

$60.00
the print included in the shrine is from the series available here on the site [visit the listing for details about what the image means, it's quite interesting].

for this piece, i wanted to create a feel of an antique spanish colonial artifact. i stumbled on an interesting development involving the e-6000 bonding glue. if you have any experience with this stuff, you know that (1) it's awesome; and (2) it's messy ... strands of this stuff go everywhere, it's so gooey. i used this to my advantage and created a sort of cowbeb inside the box, which adds another element of dimension to what's behind the glass.

i mounted the sealed print on the back board that was painted in gold metallic paint, then added bits of gold leaf surrounding it.

the face of the box is covered in copper paint to which a patina has been added, creating a look of weathered goodness. wooden ornamentations were also added, but i wanted to bring some of the color from the print inside to the outside, so these were painted in bright hues of blues and reds, which were then treated with translucent layers of other colors to create the illusion of being old and weathered.

a wooden spire on top has been treated with an iron oxide and is naturally rusting. the back of the box features a fushia covering, also treated with paint for an aged look and feel. there are two hanging units for easy installation.

the glass has been treated both inside [with acrylic wash] and outside [with enamel paint in pewter]. two copper bits adorn the two outside columns and hold a bunch of complimenting feathers. on close inspection, you'll notice flashes of subtle color in the patina'd exterior. a hand made polymer clay ornament adorns the bottom front.

measures:
box by itself is 6 x 6 inches, with a depth of 1.5 inches
the spire adds just over an inch to the height
[the feathers obviously add a little more]
the wooden ornamentations on the front add another inch to the depth

materials:

- shadowbox
- glass
- wooden ornamentational dowels [2] and caps [4]
- wooden scroll facing
- wooden spire
- copper
- feathers
- acrylic paint
- metallic paint
- enamel paint
- print
- gold leaf
- e-6000 bonding agent
- liquid nails
- craft stick bits
- tissue paper
- papier mache
- antiquing solutions
- hanging hardware
- wire
- nail brads
- mod podge
- glazing

to view the progression of this piece, visit : http://www.flickr.com/photos/six06/tags/shadowbox/

$300.00
i've moved into the world of painting on wood with wax and oil paints. this is one of those rare occurrences when i actually use gold leaf with these mediums. and i must say, the result is wonderful. the painting is reproduction of a gustav klimt original. i used only a handful of colors, so as to keep with a monochromatic scheme and not detract from both the beautiful natural grain in the wood or the luminous quality of the gold leaf.

i am a huge fan of the work of gustav klimt. here is an artist who mastered realism then created a world of his own. this is another incarnation of his "judith of holofernes" series [which he himself redid on a couple of occasions]

medium: pencil, oil paint, wax, and gold leaf on wood
size: 12 inches x 12 inches

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

my encaustic process:

wood panel was first sketched out then treated with cold wax to create a glowing effect to the grain and also provide a surface to which the oils would adhere without bleeding with the natural grain of the wood. the wax is heated to a smooth consistency, and is absorbed into the wood. after curing, i begin layering on the oil paint. not only the benefits listed above occur, but the wax also provides a luminous quality to each piece, allowing light to become trapped and refracted in such a way that makes the painting seem to "float". nothing i have tried in any other medium has this sort of effect. this is a different approach to working in wax than the traditional encaustic method [where pigment is used mixed with wax and applied hot].

additional benefits of wax paintings is that they require no varnish, and over time, as the wax and pigments harden, it can be buffed to a high sheen. care is to be taken not to scratch the surface or in keeping the painting in a high heat area.

special care is to be taken as to not scratch the surface of the painting, though over time, the surface itself will harden with age, but retaining the beauty of a fresh piece. obviously, it's not advisable to have your painting stored or placed in a high heat environment.

no varnish or sealant is required with an encaustic painting. by using a soft cloth, you can "polish" the painting to a high sheen, going with the grain is highly recommended.

for more examples of my encaustic works, visit my gallery wing at http://six06.com/blog/art/encaustic/.

I used to stretch my own canvases, as evidenced by this piece, which is ready to hang, as most of my paintings are, after having been on display previously.

It is a very stylized work, exploring a certain look that has continued to spill over into my recent works, though in a more detailed way. there is something i miss about this naive work that i once did. being a self taught artist, i like to see the growth between works, but at times am very nostalgic for the good old days when things were so simple, such as this piece. simple, yet vibrant and strong, still.

I am in need of clearing out my space to make room for newer paintings and this is one that is up for immediate sale, at a greatly reduced price than I've had listed in shows.
$150.00

5 x 7 wooden oval panel
inked by hand,
hand rubbed with cold wax, painted with oil
encaustic [heated wax] fusing of layers.

the portrait is from a photograph taken by richard avedon.

this special technique allows the many layers to fuse naturally, thereby producing a dramatic and almost dreamy effect. the light glaze application of oil in some areas allows for the natural grain of the wood to shine through, adding a different dimension to the piece.

this is an ancient practice over 2000 years old called "encaustic painting". it is a revived artform that has been used by a limited number of artist in several ways. the most common form of encaustic painting is done with the application of heated beeswax mixed with resin. i prefer a cold wax application instead, while fusing the colors between application. the result is no less wonderful, and in this way, i'm able to utilize my skills in the details.

special care is to be considered when acquiring an encaustic piece. the item should not be left in a place subject to high temperatures and care should be taken with the surface itself. consisting of wax, it is susceptible to scratches if not handled properly. over time, the wax hardens to preserve the luminosity of the work and items painted 2000 years ago by ancient greeks are still as vibrant today as they were then. the likelihood of the pigments fading is null. being that this requires no varnish, one can buff the painting with a soft clean cloth to bring the shine back to a dull piece.
