the original was painted recently. i've moved into the world of painting on wood with wax and oil paints. this is one of those rare occurrences when i actually use gold leaf with these mediums. and i must say, the result is wonderful. the painting is reproduction of a gustav klimt original. i used only a handful of colors, so as to keep with a monochromatic scheme and not detract from both the beautiful natural grain in the wood or the luminous quality of the gold leaf.

Norma encaustic wax and oil painting on wood

shades of titanium white, davy's gray, burnt umber and vandyke brown

wood panel was first sketched out then treated with cold wax to create a glowing effect to the grain and also provide a surface to which the oils would adhere without bleeding with the natural grain of the wood. the wax is heated to a smooth consistency, and is absorbed into the wood. after curing, i begin layering on the oil paint. not only the benefits listed above occur, but the wax also provides a luminous quality to each piece, allowing light to become trapped and refracted in such a way that makes the painting seem to "float". nothing i have tried in any other medium has this sort of effect. this is a different approach to working in wax than the traditional encaustic method [where pigment is used mixed with wax and applied hot].

additional benefits of wax paintings is that they require no varnish, and over time, as the wax and pigments harden, it can be buffed to a high sheen. care is to be taken not to scratch the surface or in keeping the painting in a high heat area.

special care is to be taken as to not scratch the surface of the painting, though over time, the surface itself will harden with age, but retaining the beauty of a fresh piece. obviously, it's not advisable to have your painting stored or placed in a high heat environment.

no varnish or sealant is required with an encaustic painting. by using a soft cloth, you can "polish" the painting to a high sheen, going with the grain is highly recommended.

Eva Ionesco was often photographed by her mother, Irina Ionesco, whose photo works were quite erotically charged and reminiscent of a decadent time in the Early 20th Century. [Though she was an artist in the mid to latter part of the century]. One of her favorite subjects was her daughter, sometimes shown in both tender yet questionably erotic form. Despite that, there was both a tenderness and powerful energy to these photographs. it was through these that i was inspired to recreate.

when i stumbled upon the photography of irina ionesco, i knew i had discovered gold. her work has every element i'm looking for when needing a photo reference. the lights and shadows are both challenging, yet right up my alley. the works particularly of her daughter are my favorite, for they allow me to translate what i see into something more sinister, which was, i believe, one of the controversies surrounding her photos of eva. this was one of my favorites.

my earliest influence in painting was diego rivera. never before had i seen such gorgeous portrayals of "my people". and never before had i seen it with such ferocious pride and intensity. his work spoke volumes to me. he will and always will be one of my personal art heroes. this was a sort of homage in that direction. the original painting was painted in high textures of acrylic, and detailed with oil [as evident in the nude figure].

Inspired by the work of Alphons Mucha and the song, Malaguena Salerosa [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I3tH6tUr8s]. It is the story of a beautiful woman, being sung to by a man who is in love with her, but understands if she rejects him because he is too poor for her.

The painting has been in several shows and exhibits throughout 2007 and 2008, it is framed in a light oak frame and is ready to hang.

I am in need of clearing out my space to make room for newer paintings and this is one that is up for immediate sale, at a greatly reduced price than I've had listed in shows. I had taken a second trip to New Orleans, and just as i was inspired by my first trip, so was i on this one. this is also based on a photograph that i had taken. [as seen in the listing]. this piece, however, was done in oils. i was rather new to the medium, but the reason i moved into oils was how they seemed to do a greater job with translating light and shadows much better than acrylic. this painting was an exploration in that. the spotlights and reflected neon in the windows are my favorite parts about the painting. it's a rather unusual composition, which just adds to the appeal, in my opinion.

This is one of my older paintings. before oils, i used to work in acrylics. I used to stretch my own canvases, as evidenced by this piece, which is ready to hang, as most of my paintings are, after having been on display previously.

I had taken my first trip to New Orleans and had come home completely inspired by the city and my experience. this painting is based on a photo that i had taken while in a cafe. i had also discovered gel medium and worked it into this piece with all that funky texture. seemed perfect for this. there is something i miss about this naive work that i once did. being a self taught artist, i like to see the growth between works, but at times am very nostalgic for the good old days when i was eager to explore new mediums and styles. [well, that is not entirely true ... i am still just as eager].

This is an original painting i created in the Apocalypto Series, as inspired by the movie by Mel Gibson. It is a tribute to both Gustav Klimt and Edouard Manet. Utilizing certain elements and styles by klimt, and drawn from the composition of manet, i painted this original piece: a noble attended by her hand servant, rich with textures, color and shapes.

It has been in several other exhibits since then.

an unusual canvas shape, ROUND, this measures 5 inches in diameter and is mounted upon a 7 inch diameter wooden base which has been handgilded in gold leaf, to accent the painting beautifully! features a hanging wire in the back and is ready for hanging.

the technique used to create this is along the lines of what i'd accomplished with the "gentleman studies", a loose and thick application of heavy and heady strokes, using oil and galkyd resin. the result is a cross between impressionism and pop art. a delicate balance of light and color, a beautiful boudoir accessory.

sealed with several coats of varnish for a sleek and protective coating. very shiny.

using a .005 and .01 micron archival ink pen and sturdy bright white bristol board, i created this stylized version of the sun sign, in the vein of the Aztec Calendar. images of skeletal fish, skeletons, hearts, eyes and other associated designs make up this very detailed drawing. hours of stippling [the technique using dots to create depth and shadows] were put into this piece.

i have created others, as my goal was to do the entire zodiac, but i ran out of steam a little less than halfway through. those included the following:

GEMINI

i will be finishing the others some time in the future. hopefully.

FAITH encaustic hand painted giclee wax and pigment with oil

this is another one of my handpainted giclee productions. printed using archival quality dyes and treated with kamar varnish for added protection, this item is sure to last a very long time with proper care. more durable than common prints, the process involving giclees ensures superb reproduction of an original image, duplicating even the most delicate of strokes, coming as close to the original painting than any other printing process in existence.

mounted on an 8 x 8 inch wood frame, item is ready for framing or can be hung as is, without the unsightly sides unfinished, the printing process creates a mirror image, wrap around, so the sides bleed effortlessly and ensures a continuity throughout.

the painting is called "FAITH", based on the original which was featured in EL CORAZON exhibit in Dallas at the Bath House Cultural Center [original is available here in my etsy shop]. the handpainting on this particular giclee included application of wax, as was the original, enhancing the giclee with additional metallic and carbon pigment, and application of additional oil paint to bring out the lines and color, deepening it further.

the expense for producing a giclee is rather costly, but the quality of the return is definitely worth it.

NOTE: handpainted with oil paint and wax, a process called "encaustic", using heat to fuse the layers of color. the last photo in the set is the original from which this giclee was produced. the painting is affixed with several coats of varnish for protection and a vibrancy unmatched by the dyes of the printing process, which in itself, is quality work. the white spots or dots seen are the result of reflected light from the scanner. it also shows you the texture of the canvas upon which this painting is printed upon.
