Barnum had the most famous "dime museum" - his American Museum, in Manhattan in the late 1800's.A Dime Museum might be a collection of oddities and attractions in a storefront or on a boardwalk. Coney Island had quite a few at one time. It was fun for the family, and was considered "educational" - it WAS a museum, afterall! Authentic details. A couple of years ago, a local customer of mine requested a light hearted "wake-up" sign to address a problem she was having in her store. Children were running rampant, damaging merchandise and disturbing shoppers while their parents went about their shopping, oblivious to the chaos that only they could prevent. My customer did not want to offend the parents (customers), but merely to gently remind them that there was no babysitter in the store - they would have to provide their own supervision. She tells me that the sign gets quite a few chuckles, and hears many more parents telling their sweet darlings to take a seat, or at least "Don't Touch!".

Lesions, Pimples, Boils! These were the socially awkward symptoms of "Bad Blood". Other symptoms included insanity and eventual death, but the Blood Purifier label doesn't mention these. Countless historical figures were undone by the bad blood, Van Gogh, Gauguin, all kinds of political and creative figures. Bad Blood was the Victorian euphimism for Syphillis. It was impolite, you see, to call it by it's name, or speak of it in "mixed" company. This 8 by 10 inch, one of a kind Claybord etching sports a real antique label for Bookers Blood Purifier, and a real cork "stopper". The lettering is done in sign vinyl, and the border and bottle are etched into the clay. Claybord is a museum quality masonite panel coated with a layer of kaolin clay and covered in ink. It is completely sealed, and ready to hang with or without framing.

This is a mixed media piece incorporating an actual vintage medicine label, and a real cork "stopper". I wish I could get a better picture of it, because the linework is actually very crisp, and has a somewhat 3D effect.

Made of durable, non rusting heavy gauge aluminum and premium vinyl graphics, this sign will last many years indoors or out. 7 by 16 inches. The FeeGee mermaid was probably PT Barnum'd most famous "discovery". The mermaid was a taxidermied hybrid od fish and monkey, and not too well preserved. People lined up in throngs at his museum to see her. The FiJi Islands and any other south pacific location were unimaginably exotic at that time - before air travel and discount vacation packages. When an anonymous letter writer informed the New York press that the mermaid was a blatantly obviuos fake, the lines got even longer. People wanted to see the fake that fooled Barnum. Rumor has it that the writer was PT Barnum himself. FeeGee mermaids are still being manyfactured, mostly without the animal parts, and if one looks, there are "gaff Artists" out there ready and willing to make one for you at a reasonable price. o, you can just enjoy your sign. If you want to learn the nitty gritty of marketing and profit, I would suggest you read Barnum's books. Genius!

I first saw this message written on a peice of cardboard at a local convenience store last summer. Since then, I have seen several more versions hanging in local businesses around my hometown of Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania (Sounds magical, doesn't it?). On the one hand, it is a sign of a sorry state of affairs, here in The Sink, and around the country. On the other hand - there is no reason this sign can't be attractive. It could enhance the look of any retail business, and add a polished,classy touch to an otherwise cold and seemingly harsh (but neccesary) message. Here is a real piece of my personal history. This sign is a "fancied up" version of an actual sign that anyone can see at the traveling carnivals in the summertime in anytown USA.They hang at the gate for some of the faster rides, and are usually written in marker on cardboard. This is my first ever carny style sign. I made the first one about 10 years ago - it's had a few different carnations and color combos, but the sentiment remains the same, and it is an absolute universal truth. Like all of my aluminum signs, this one is an original design, produced in very small numbers, and will last for many many years, indoors or out. This Egress sign is approx 6 by 12 inches in size, and will never rust or fade.What is an Egress, you ask? Nothing really - Egress means "Escape" or "Exit". So what does it have to do with P.T. Barnum? Here's the story:

When Barnum (American Business Genius of the highest degree)opened his famous American Museum, the first of it's kind in this country, in New York City in the nineteenth century, it was a huge success. He had everything in there - music, entertainment, a menagerie, all types of unique people and taxidermy the likes of which the common folk had never dreamed of. They packed the place. It was standing room only! He was raking in the dough like you or I can only dream of. As long as he could keep selling tickets, that is. He had a problem. The place would fill to the rafters, and the crowds would linger, gawking at the wonders he had amassed in his world travels. They just wouldn't leave. Once filled, the ticket booth would be idle. What to do? Why would anyone want to leave? There wasn't much else going on in the way of family entertainment - no movies, TV, internet, video games...

He had to move them out! So, here's where the genius part kicks in...

Direct them to the exit in such a way that they couldn't help but WANT to go through it! The EGRESS sign pointed to a door, the door opened to the alley behind the museum, and locked behind the sorry patrons whose curiosity had gotten the best of them! To continue on their tour, they had to buy another ticket.

Actually, it's from a memory of a show I saw in the seventies. This one is one of a kind, I don't usually use this color. It is made of non glare, eighth inch thick plastic, 12 by 16 inches, and will last forever if hung indoors. Here's the story:

I think the best part of growing up in the seventies was all the carnivals that would sprout up all around our town, starting every June. The best one of all was the one that would come to the big Atlantic Thrift parking lot, just a few blocks from my house.

The whole family would go and ride the rides and eat funnel cake, at least once while it was there - but NEVER, EVER, would we go into the big tent with all the bright pictures on the outside. There would be a Bally tape blaring over the loud music, telling us about the wonders to be found on the inside - Alive!

“Mom”, I would ask, “What’s in there?”

“Nothing”, would be the reply.

“There must be something”

“Nothing nice, how about the Ferris Wheel?”

I hated the Ferris wheel. I just knew that whatever was in that tent must be something really fun. The Bally tape said I would be shocked. I wanted to be shocked. So, I pressed the subject.

“Look,” She said “There are poor, sick people in there, and they are being taken advantage of! It’s awful! Nice people don’t go in there - if you pay the money, you just encourage the whole nasty business!”

Well, the Bally tape didn’t say “awful”, it said “amazing”. I just had to see it. Anyway, I knew that I was never allowed to do the most fun stuff , and I was sick of it. Time to take a stand. The next night, mom had to work, so I put my paper route money in my pocket, and met my friend George from down the street. From his front porch, we could hear the music from the rides - Steppenwolf, Argent, Yes (Roundabout for the Roundup!) . We were going to have fun!

“Hey” he said as we walked up the road, ‘did you hear about the girl that got killed at the fair last night?”

“No, what happened?”

“In the Spook House. They still didn’t find her head”

“C’mon!” I didn’t see anything about it in the paper. “That didn’t happen”

“Did too!. My brother’s girlfriend knew her. There are devil worshippers living in there. They drank her blood, and they took her head for a ceremony”

Well, if one of the older kids said it, it must be true! We walked the rest of the way to the fair thinking it over. As we entered, we could hear that Bally tape…”Bloody Mama! She’s alive! “ Pretty exciting.

“She’s killed a hundred Men!…not for the faint of heart! Enter if you Dare!….” On and on it went, she must be something!
“Let’s go in”

“It’s probably dumb!” He argued

“C’mon, I’m going in - Chicken!”

“I’m not chicken, it’s dumb!”

“….From the darkest jungle…A terrifying Killer…Keep your hands at your sides!…” I just knew it was Bloody Mama, not some devil cult, that killed that girl in the spook house! I had to see her.

“She’s some kind of jungle savage” I told him “She might be naked!”
In we went. And there she was - a python. Not eating anyone. She was naked, though. Seemed she was sleeping. Next to her was a goat with an extra leg. Nothing awful, no sick people. I knew my mother didn’t know what she was talking about! And it was over, we were back on the midway.

“Wanna go in the Spook House?”
“Yeah!”
