Circa 1900 from a broken French Encyclopedia, the Nouveau Larousse Illustre. Suitable for framing or for use in your own mixed media or collage projects.

This DOUBLE-SIDED book illustration is divided into five horizontal rows and shows a pageant of the changes to civilian costumes from Egyptian times through 1595 on one side. The other side shows changes from 1617 through 1898. Wonderful detail and delicate coloring. In very good condition for its age as well.

The scan does cut the border area down somewhat, but the margins are present and clean with just very minor corner bumping and all-over mellowing of color and paper.

This is an antique book plate and not a reproduction.

The full page is 12 1/4 inches high and 9 inches wide.

The image on the page is 10 3/4 inches high and 7 3/4 inches wide

Taken from the broken book the "Illustrated Treasury of Gilbert and Sullivan" (1940).

Lucille Corcos was a noted illustrator and practitioner of the American “modern primitivist” trend whose career began about 1929. Her work was witty, colorful, and very popular even though she willfully ignored conventions of perspective and scale.

Corcos trained at the Art Students League in New York City and she produced several illustrated children’s books and subsequently illustrations for Vanity Fair magazine. She exhibited widely from the mid 1930s on at venues including the Whitney Biennial, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design.

This page has some edge wear and signs of its age, but is generally in very good condition. It would look superb framed for the operetta lover in your life. The colors are bright and the effect is busy, jolly and joyous.

This page has some slight staining on the right margin (see scan).

This is an original book page from the 1940s, not a reproduction, and not the original artwork for the book illustration either!

Size overall is 11 3/4 inches (height) by 8 3/4 (width)

A delicate, hand-colored engraving bearing engraved signature of the artist H. Charles. The detail of their delicate faces and veiled hats is lovely and color has been applied with great care.

The two large figures display the latest to wear from France. These lovely ladies are posed on stairs by the sea with a small lighthouse in the background in the height of summer in 1891. Just looking at the layers, capes and long sleeves makes me break into a sweat.

On heavy paper with no text to the reverse. As you can see from the scan (note text at bottom of page), this was possibly cut down at some point from its original size, though this makes little difference for framing purposes or if you want to use the figures for a mixed media or collage project.

Some creasing and edge wear, especially at top edge with small tears at margins on top and left and right borders, which would be hidden behind a mat. Fair condition overall.

Blonde girl in slumping sock and her older sister in a baggy blue dress have set out a saucer of milk for the three kittens.

This is a lovely muted chromolithographed image on heavy paper. It probably dates to the 1870s or 80s, and was acquired by me in England many years ago.

It's condition overall is good despite a tear at the top edge (see scan) and some crumpling in that same area. It may have been cut down from a larger size in the past as edges seem uneven and hand-trimmed. The edges and corners are in a good state.

This would look great framed for a child's room or incorporated into your own collage work or scrapbook.

Muted colors, stunning subject, beautiful detail in this superb Victorian image of a mother dressed in a very fashionable lilac silk gown cradling her blonde daughter in her arms. Mother looks very composed and daughter looks as if her tears of anger have just subsided.

It was acquired in England and is printed on heavy paper and a generous size too. Dating to the 1870s-80s most likely. It may have been cut down, but its current dimensions lend it an air of intimacy with the subjects that is wonderful. Condition is excellent despite slight surface losses (white pinpoints on scan), bump on lower corner. Crisp edges and generally gorgeous!

Gorgeous Victorian Chromolithograph - Girls with a Doll

Vivid colors, stunning subject, beautiful detail in this superb Victorian image of two girls and their doll. The older blonde girl in blue silk gown and double strand of pearls appears to be mending the hem of her dark-haired girl companion's doll's dress. From the type of doll (with articulated kid-leather body and jointed wood lower limbs) I'd estimate that this illustration dates to about 1880-1890 or so.

It was acquired in England and is printed on heavy paper. It may have been cut down, but its current dimensions lend it an air of intimacy with the subjects that is very appealing. Condition is excellent despite one black blemish (an accident of the printing process) on the smaller child's lower leg. Crisp edges and corners. Overall - SUPER!

Suitable for framing for a child's room or for use in your own collage work. It would also make a superb gift for a doll collector.

Lushly printed in subdued colors and with a slight embossed effect on heavy paper. Engraver's name and date in bottom right corner: Henri Girardet 1871.

A girl in bright red dress and head scarf, accompanied by a younger boy, distributes food from a bowl in her lap with a spoon to chickens and ducks outside her home.

In pencil on the back is written "1/-" - price one shilling.

The image has been cut down from its original size, perhaps to remove a plain border. Overall it's in excellent condition with minor surface losses (white pinpoints on scan), slight corners bumps and edge wear consistent with its age.

Printed in muted Victorian colors and lightly embossed (which almost gives an impression of a painting on canvas) depicting two children feeding a rabbit in a rustic setting. Their discarded doll lies in the foreground - abandoned in favor of a living toy. Lovely detail of household utensils in the upper right.

The edges look as though they have been trimmed by hand from a larger sheet, minor edge wear and corner bumps. Pinpoint white areas on the scan are surface loss or adhesions. Overall very good condition. Acquired in England and most likely dating to the 1870s or 1880s.

It does show its age to some extent and the central crease shows its origin as a page that folded out of the flimsy magazine to tempt women of the day. As usual it illustrates bustled dresses of the day from the front, side and back as modeled by five beauties, and a little girl's dress as well with their miniature companion on the lower left holding her own fashion doll.

This is an illustration from a broken book printed in the 1890s (The World Its Cities and Peoples).

The engraver was William Caxton Keene (1855-1910) who studied art in London, and was a successful watercolour landscape painter and engraver.

On cream paper with text about Chicago to the reverse. There is some slight foxing visible at the edges of the page, but nothing that would be glaring if this engraving were framed or reused in your collage work. Overall the page is in excellent condition.

The vignettes include the Rustic Bridge, Douglas Monument, Swan Island, Washington Square.

The central squirrel holding a nut is printed with metallic maroon oil-based ink onto a bright red striped background. I've used white Fabriano Rosaspina paper for the print and the process used an etching press (not a Gocco printer).

Green and Pink Plaid - hand-made, three-signature blank book

Meticulously made by hand in Italy with American ingenuity!

Covers: I have used a beautiful green, pink and gold plaid Indian commercial patterned paper for the outside and inside covers. To distinguish the front cover I added a square motif of this same paper.

Signatures: Three - 96 pages of paper inside are 140 gram Cartiere Magnani Biblos Velata off-white paper suitable for ink, pencil and other media. All paper is torn and cut by hand.

Sewing: Signatures are attached with a pamphlet stitch to the reinforced green bookcloth spine with pink waxed thread knotted inside using a pamphlet stitch. The stitching technique I've used makes it quite easy to deconstruct the book once it's been filled without damaging the individual sheets, so precious drawings can be framed or matted separately.

Each book is unique - I never make duplicates. It is light and lovely and can be used as a journal, guestbook, or sketchbook.
