Resurfacing after 166 years, this Temporal Displacement Book (TDB) has been determined to be the second* in the series of seven TDB’s made in the mid-1800’s. Possibly what makes this one of the more unique of the books is that it was only one of two TDB’s purchased by women. Although we’re not really sure what that signifies, exactly.

This particular book was owned by Lady Evelyn Addison, a British heiress and adventuress who lived a rather exciting life in close imitation of her personal role model Lady Hester Stanhope. Unlike Lady Stanhope, Lady Evelyn enjoyed traveling much further abroad than the Mediterranean and Middle East, visiting Japan and the Far East somewhat regularly. She was well-known for her friendliness, strength of character and limitless energy. Unfortunately for Lady Evelyn, she didn’t survive quite as long as Lady Stanhope. It is alternately rumored that she was lost at sea during a freak Tsunami in the South China Sea or that she was poisoned while dining on a Japanese blowfish.

While it seems possible that the Time Displacement Unit (TDU) built into this book is still functioning, the seller was not brave enough to attempt activating it. Those of a heartier disposition may be more willing to risk the dangers of a potentially malfunctioning TDU in the off-chance that it will work properly. Seller is NOT responsible for personal, temporal or emotional damage that may be caused by the use of a functioning or non-functioning TDU.

Whether the TDU works or not, this is an excellent book to use as a personal or art journal. It seems that Lady Evelyn was more adventurous than she was faithful at keeping a journal since she apparently never wrote in her TDB, perhaps merely keeping it as a novelty item or using it simply for its time displacement properties. Her lack of journal-writing has left a “clean” (if slightly aged) slate for you to write, draw, or paint (with watercolors or acrylics) to your hearts content (or until you run out of space). All you need is a topic. Perhaps a trip to Japan for some fugu….

Originally produced by a small, unknown manufacturer in southern Illinois called Stughmeier & Sons, the Temporal Displacement Book series encompassed seven books featuring Temporal Displacement Units (TDU’s) and purchased from the company between 1842 and 1845. The day following the sale of the seventh TDB, the whole factory completely disappeared without a trace.

Each book was purchased by a separate individual in a private sales meeting made available by invitation only. The buyers were all chosen carefully for their adventurous spirits, interest in the unusual and fantastical, and, of course, for their obscene wealth.

At the present time, the locations of the other five TDB's are unknown.

*Note: While the seller finds it intriguing that the second book to return happens to also be the second book produced in the TDB series, the seller would like to point out that the vagaries of temporal displacement make it inherently impossible to quantify the duration of the nonspatial continuum measured in terms of the reappearance of one TDB to another or the sequence with which they might resurface.

This book measures 7.5" x 5.5" (without spine rods, the height is 6.75”) and is filled with tea-stained Utrecht drawing paper, good for a variety of art media or just for pen and pencil. There are 192 pages (96 leaves).

The journal covers are hand-dyed, veg-tanned leather in a mottled pattern to look aged. There is additional deliberate "aging" (a burn mark, some scuff marks, etc.) to add to the used look. The hinges and corners are made from copper sheets, cut down, attached to the covers with rivets and then hammered and aged slightly. There is no varnish or finish on the copper so it will patina with age and use.

The clockwork sections were designed and carefully placed to look as functional as possible. The text block was sewn onto a copper sheet through individual copper tubes cut and shaped to look like a series of intermixed and overlapping tubes on a used piece of machinery. Additional tubes were attached to the covers to add to the look. The hinges themselves are larger copper tubes threaded through the copper loops to connect the covers to the spine and text block. The book will lay completely flat when open but there are a number of protruding parts on the covers and spine to be mindful of.

This playful little notepad is perfect for carrying in a purse or pocket. Always carry note paper with you...and do it with style!

Measures 2 3/8" x 2" (closed) and includes 16 sheets of 60-lb paper (scraps from other book projects). The cover is veg-tanned leather, hand-dyed, stamped and painted in a retro flower design.

Paper is attached using metal brads and making it extremely easy to refill your notepad. One refill is included. Paper measures 2 1/8" x 1 3/4" and can be easily cut down, holes punched and replaced. Or I'd be happy to make some inexpensive refill packs for you, if you prefer.

Faux Leather Scroll Pendant

This fabulous pendant does double-duty as a small notebook. The scroll "cover" is made from a bendable polymer clay in a custom-mixed brown, textured on the outside and antiqued on both sides with dark brown acrylic paint to look like leather. It's lightly buffed to give it a gentle shine, enhancing the leather look. The scroll is approximately 1.75" wide (45mm) and, when closed it's approximately 1" around (25mm) depending on how tightly you roll it when you close it. Open "flat," the scroll cover is 3.25" x 1.75" (85mm x 45mm). The design is a geometric triangle pattern. The paper is Arches Text Wove and measures approximately 1.75" x 2.25" (45mm x 60mm). There are 5 sheets, attached with a single black, unwaxed linen cord looped through two holes at the top of the pages and the cover and then tied in a knot on the outside. This could be easily refilled with your own paper. There is a single gold jump ring for hanging this on a cord. The scroll is secured with a thin (I think it's 2mm) black, leather cord. When closed, it makes a lovely and unique pendant. You could wear it around your neck or attach it to a keyring.

I have done more of these but each one is unique--with different texture patterns on the covers and different widths. The clay I originally used to mix my colors is now limited in its availability so I probably won't be making a lot of these in the future.

The entire journal is made by hand using veg-tanned leather and Utrecht drawing paper. Excellent for taking notes or journaling-on-the-go. These would make beautiful, personal gifts for the holidays. You have a variety of options when ordering this book.

Color: there is a color chart in the photos. You can choose a single color for the whole book--if so, I will antique or highlight/enhance the outline of the letter so that it's more visible. I also have a rainbow of artist acrylics which can be used to color the letter (i.e., the "N" journal has a silver letter).

Leaf Seasons Journal Pamphlet

Summer and Fall.

This journal was an interesting experiment--a marriage of polymer clay and fabric. The leaves are a summery green metallic polymer clay backed with various fabrics (patterned cotton, textured upholstery, thin knit, and green gauze). The spine is polymer clay-infused cotton. The paper is a lovely, autumn yellow with leaf and floral inclusions. The leaves on the fabric side have been painted with red, orange, and yellow acrylics for a Fall look. The leaf designs were drawn by me and cut from the clay and fabric, pressed together and then the clay was veined before curing. Once cured, I highlighted the designs on the clay with various acrylic colors. The book is 6.25" x 4.5" (157mm x 115mm). There are 32 pages (front and back), hand torn. The binding is a pamphlet stitch using dark green waxed linen cord.

This journal is one of a kind and I probably will not be using this technique again for a book cover. The inside back cover is signed with my initials and the year.

Mom's Bouquet Journal Leather Spine

This is a small journal, 4.75" x 3.25" (119mm x 82mm), with a lovely pink floral fabric cover and yellow-gold leather spine. This spring-themed journal is filled with 64 pages (one page = one side) of hand-torn, bright yellow Canson Mi Teintes paper, hand sewn onto tapes and then cased in with the cover. The end papers have a pretty pink basketweave design and the unique, attached bookmark is made from a floral crochet trim.

This is a very lovely little notebook or sketchbook for a woman. It also has a twin. The second book is made identical (or as close to identical as possible for handmade items) to this one except the spine is suede in a matching yellow-gold color to this one's leather spine.

See the twins in the last picture? Don't they look purty together--like they belong with one another? You want them both. You know you do.

I used bright summer green fabric with pink and cream lines that look hand drawn for the cover of this book. The soft beige fabric on the spine has a suede look and feel to it. This journal measures 5.25" x 4.5" (132mm x 115mm). The endpapers are made from a handmade pink paper with red fibers throughout. There are 144 pages (counting each side as one page) of cream-colored Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper. This chunky little book would make a great sketchbook, art, travel, or writing journal.
