Please understand this is not technically a "coat" but a corset that happens to have tails and sleeves. They're a splendid way to dress up any steampunk, Victorian, or freakin' awesome gown you have. ;) The skirt has a drawstring waist, and it's stitched down flat in the front so it won't bunch up at all, and then all of the gathering happens in the back. This is KNEE length in the front (about 22 inches long), and then curves down to about ankle length in the back. The back is bustled all over in beautiful folds and stitched to hold them in perfect place. I think these look lovely as overskirts over full skirt, or going over fishnets or tights along with some good knee-high Victorian inspired boots!

*Believe it or not, it took me years to work up this pattern. It seems simple enough, but if you saw how Simplicity and McCalls butcher perfectly good peasant blouse patterns, you would understand. The sleeves are always way too poofy, or they fit like t-shirt sleeves, and it takes an eternity to thread the elastic into this huge neckline and suck it in so it gathers. After endless sleepless nights, I finally figured out how to work it! Instead of threading the elastic through this huge neckline, I actually stretch the elastic and sew it right to the fabric, which makes for perfectly even gathers, and it allows for a closer fitting, sleeker blouse. All the seams inside are professionally finished with my gentle loving serger, and it's just a really great piece that works for every aspect of pirate or ren wear.

*These can take a beating. I've spilled everything possible on mine, and worn it repeatedly to every renaissance festival we have booths at, and I just come home and bleach it and it's fine! Plus, after you wash them enough, they have this lovely weathered look that is perfect for the time period!

There rods are hand-dipped in rubber so they'll never poke out of the fabric, and they will also never bend or break. They give you a perfectly flat stomach and very good back support! I don't like spring steel up the front opening of my bodices because it tends to bow out when you sit down because of the length. It's great on the sides for making you hourglass, but you don't want it to stick straight out when you sit down.

I've been wearing the same skirt to renaissance festivals for more than four years, and it still looks like new. Just pop it in the wash on cold (make sure to tie the ribbon up so it doesn't disappear inside the casing). Line dry, and off to the fair again!
