This is the house where I found the stripey fabric from my books, and cameras, and photo equipment. I found an olde album of tin-types and many portraits of dogs. I found rat shit and photgraphs of Flossy (see home page www.theblackspotbooks.com). This is the place I brought peope too. Christmas cards and $1 dollar bills. Savings bonds and snow. I remember trudging through the snow to the front porch with my mom. When I finally got a house of my own I returned to collect the treasure chest that I moved to the hallway for such an occasion. When I arrived I passed the house. And then backed up and passed it again. and then backed up. I got out and drove down that familiar driveway. Holy shit. I got out. I set up my camera. I set it to automatic and I grabbed an umbrella from the trunk - one that I had found in the house weeks before. I ran to where the house once was, I pointed the umbrella, click. I looked down, the point was on a bone. How peculiar I thought. And then I saw bits and pieces of what I had gone through again and again with so many others, ground into the dirt, the leveled fucking earth. Abandoned.

This image was created in many parts, from digital to tangible then back again and again.

Pigment Inkjet Print for this listing 8x10 limited edition of 100. Horse hairs and stuffing flew in the early morning sunlight. It returned home with me years ago and in the recent reorganising of my studio, I found this...

There were some holes in it which I backed with vintage red and white striped fabric that I also found long ago in an abandoned house. The leather is a bit stiff - needs a warm pocket and some loving.

Size:
3 inches high
2 1/2 inches wide
3/4 inch spine
78 sheets (156 pages)

Materials: (archival innards, antique & gathered outards)
leather - Antique leather from Ecuadorian saddle
paper - Strathmore drawing, acid-free, hand torn and stitched.
thread and binding tape - linen
headband - found in London, vintage

My books are made using archival insides and antique outsides. I got married in Iceland and then my husband wandered off to war for a year. It seemed like a good story but I am slowly realising, as the cold and damp creeps into my skin even though spring is here, and as the fireplace seems still to want a fire, that I don't like this story. Søren has been alive for nearly a year and his papa shall not return for another half. I was always the lonely kind. So now what?

We made a film entitled, "An Ever-Sure Antidote To Despair" which I have been trying to upload onto the internet. I am not figuring it out. When I do, I shall erase this nonsense and post a link!

Archival Pigment Inkjet Print
This listing 8x10 limited edition of 100.
Ready to frame.
Sorens Side Scuttle, A View To Victorian Sea Life - Journal

$100.00
This mini took all day. Now that it is finished I am excited to post it...

There are only 12 pages, and of these, only one side is available for writing. The back sides are all circular cut-outs of The Sea and Sea Creatures from a VIctorian Book, 1885. The front piece sewn onto the cover is an antique door-knob bezzle or rosette. Through the porthole, one can see a little olde fish, and through the holes, top and bottom, are bits of my favourite red and white stripey fabric that I found in an abandoned house, form the 50's or earlier. This same fabric lines the inside of the cover. The book opens flat.

This is a little treasure that I hesitate to part with. I made it with my little tot, Søren, in mind. My husband and I are working on a children's book and I thought to make some one-of-a-kind editions. But, eh, the book isn't written yet, so here it is.

Size:
2 1/4 inches high
2 1/2 inches wide
1/2 inch spine
12 pages

Materials: (archival innards, antique & gathered outards)
leather - Scrap leather from Israeli Cobbler.
paper - Strathmore drawing, acid-free, hand torn and stitched.
thread and binding tape - linen
headband - found in London, vintage

Nightwanderer, a drawing created on a lovely sea

$25.00
I was on a little boat, 8 people maybe. We were travelling along the coast of Turkey and Greece, stopping at small islands en route. The company was regular, boring regular with a strong dislike for me. I spent a lot of time drawing and writing. I spent most of the time drawing this little thing which is of another trip on an olde pirate ship in the Galapagos! The Greece and Turkey voyage was amazing anyway, one of the best stops was when we had to because of a storm that was tossing us about. We had to get close to the island and create a pulley system to shore (they didn't hate me when i paddled to shore with the rope!) Once it was set up everyone got in the blow up boat and were safely pulleyed to land. There was a kid who looked like a cave man there, collecting bits of rubber and other crap that floated in. He put them in a coffee can over a fire and melted the bits to seal the boat he was building. He had a little shack right on the beach where he lived. We spoke in our own sign language. But this is not what I drew... I drew nighttime on the pirate ship. i would listen to music, I slept on a covered built in cooler thing that was right on the edge of the railing. If I slept to well I was likely to roll into The Sea. I just hung my head over the edge as we travelled by night and the plankton were like tiny little travelling stars in The Sea. Nightwanderers, I thought. And then I thought of all of the ghosts, too...

The foliage bits on the sail are from an island and the boat itself is from a piece of junk that floated in from The Sea. The other bit on the boat bottom is the inside of an almond shell.

Pigment Inkjet Print
This listing 8x10 limited edition of 100.
You will receive ed. no. 4/100
Ready to frame. I just found this new one (my husband thinks it is from a 6 shooter, big bullets, big trigger and that it is from the 1800s) and cast it into silver and white bronze. It is a heavy trigger, I put it in stinky liver of sulfer to return it to its original antique looking patina!

Available in white bronze (astro) with copper loop and chain for $65

The locket opens when the bead twists upward on the threaded post. The images in this locket are absolutely beautiful! They come from a German woman's health book from the late 1800s. The were extracted from a large chromolithograph of an illustration by Dr. Anna of a fetus and the placenta. The colours are magnificent and look kaleidescope-like in the beveled glass.

Featured in one side of the locket is an illustration of a curled up healthy fetus. The other side is part of the pregnant mother's innards!

If you would like me to search for a particular theme, please let me know! I ONLY use original antique images, so i cannot resize them. A scavenger hunt it becomes...

The locket is 1" square
The loop and threaded rod and bead are 1/2 tall
1/2 inch thick.

I have 14" 16" and 18" inch silver chains with lobster clasps made, please send your preferred size in an email with the order. If you do not specify, then I will send the 16" chain!
I was greeted by a tiny olde man with cracked fingers resembling the leather i sought. I asked him in English if he had any olde leather and pointed to an antique attache case worn and weary and hanging on the wall. Communication was a challenge but it ended with his climbing up a dusty ladder he pulled down from the ceiling. He came down dirty and darker but with some lovely brown treasures! He held his fingers up until the amount he wanted was before me.

This book is made of that leather (the brown part) and some whitish scraps from Fabric Row in Philadelphia which I painted with a golden paint. The front back and spine boards are connected with brass tacks. This is a hard bound book.

6 inches high
5 inches wide
1.5 inch spine

My books are made using archival insides and antique outsides. Inside you'll find linelessstrathmore drawing paper - thick, hand-torn, acid-free pages that work perfectly with ink, pens both thick and superfine, pencil, charcoal, and myriad other mediums. The books' covers are made using hand-picked scraps and worn leather from wherever I can find them, cut to fit the appropriate size. The images, when included, like those in the jewellery, are taken from olde books, embedded in the cover and sealed with matte varnish.

for more books and information www.theblackspotbooks.com

***if you have olde leather to trade, please let me know!!!***

The locket opens when the bead twists upward on the threaded post. The images in this locket are absolutely beautiful. They come from a German woman's health book from the late 1800s. The were extracted from large chromolithographs of an illustration by Dr. Anna from a page of medicinal herbs. The colours are magnificent and look kaleidescope-like beneath the beveled glass.

The locket is 1" square
The loop and threaded rod and bead are 1/2 tall
1/2 inch thick.

I have 14" 16" and 18" inch silver chains with lobster clasps made, please send your preferred size in an email with the order. If you do not specify, then I will send the 18" chain!
What he actually brought for me, was an antique pyrex baby bottle with flowers that he picked from the forest in water, and this whole lovely bouquet was wrapped on the bottom in the olde pillowcase! This was May of 2008 and I haven't any idea how this is, but the bottle STILL has both the water and the flowers in it. I know this sounds like a concocted story, but it is truth. The next book I make shall be photographed with the assemblage!

Anyway, I sent the pillowcase to Laura of hierapparel and she made a bag from it and sent all of the scraps, even the miniest back to me!!! So well put I am cutting and pasting his doings...!!!

Stockbridge Fine Art Print is pleased to announce an exhibition of new photographs by Margaux Kent. From her recent travels to Iceland where she was married to her husband Walter, directly before his departure for Iraq, Kent has indulged in the morbid fantasy that his return may never come. Turning her camera on the hillside glaciers where her wedding took place, Kent explores her quixotic emotions within a harsh and sublime landscape. Illusory and romantic, Kent's photographs reveal the timeless longing of a soldier's wife.

This image was created in many parts, from digital to tangible then back again and again.

Pigment Inkjet Print for this listing 8x10 limited edition of 100. (2006)

This series of work began with the double images I refer to as The Illness Apprentice I, II, III and IV, where I photograph multiple parts of me and situate them together like Siamese twins in a way to extract one from the other in an endless circle. Søren is kind of secondary to my search through the spyglass for he who may be lost at sea. (in the photograph only!)

but Walter isn't in The Navy and he shot it so it wouldn't be so depressing and I have just finished it to-day, I suppose knowing he is returning in 3 weeks made it easier to finish.

Archival Pigment Inkjet Print
This listing 8x10 limited edition of 100.
Ready to frame.

Date: 2007
Size: 16x20 inches
Medium: Pigment Inkjet Print on Hahnemuhle German Etching Paper
Edition: 25
signed and numbered on back

Also available:
8x10 in an edition of 100 $25 each

larger sizes available in smaller additions.

Printing by www.stockbridgefineartprint.com

(2007)

This series of work began with the double images I refer to as The Illness Apprentice I, II, III and IV, where I photograph multiple parts of me and situate them together like Siamese twins in a way to extract one from the other in an endless circle. The actual double-imaged self-portrait has transformed into a single portrait with multiple personalities. The process re-enforces the ambiguity of the character by disconnecting it from a particular time and placing it in a more theatrical location, thus creating endless interpretations though remaining a dueling self.

The costume was found, with the exception of the skull which I found in Ecuador, in abandoned houses!

This image was created in many parts, from digital to tangible then back again and again.

Pigment Inkjet Print for this listing 8x10 limited edition of 100.

$80.00
I mention on my front page my having found a spectacular pair of chaps from the 20s or 30s. I said I was gonna cut em up and make loads of books. Well, I am frightened. As always when cutting something super cool. I started with the inside pocket which covers this book. The outside leather is very different.

This book is really nice, but I should have shaved some of the thickness away. It is a bit stiff but should break in nicely. (I am reducing the price a bit as a result of this). I tied it with an olde piece of rope that I found in an amazing olde leather suitcase that I bought without looking inside! (also found navy uniforms, a cool olde white bag and a box of calling cards!) I lined the edge of the book with red and white striped fabric that I found in an abandoned house.

Size:
4 3/4 inches high
3 1/4 inches wide
1 inch spine
78 sheets (156 pages)

Materials: (archival innards, antique & gathered outards)
leather - Olde leather jacket
paper - Strathmore drawing, acid-free, hand torn and stitched.
thread and binding tape - linen
headband - found in London, vintage

My books are made using archival insides and antique outsides. Inside you'll find lineless strathmore drawing paper - thick, hand-torn, acid-free pages that work perfectly with ink, pens both thick and superfine, pencil, charcoal, and myriad other mediums. the pages are each hand sewn with archival linen binder's thread. The books' covers are made using hand-picked scraps and worn leather from wherever I can find them, cut to fit the appropriate size. The books can be carried daily and beat up. They are quite strong creatures.

I am always interested in trading olde leather toward books!

If I slept too well I was likely to roll into The Sea.

Ready to frame. It is not nearly as big, but as I now have a boy and another growing, I am trying to be a bit more pragmatic - and have made a smaller and more manageable book to show!

I have just made this new journal for me, so this listing is not for this journal, but for one like it, or even for the size and we can work out details for your particular book...

This book is covered in an antique deer hide (i have some more). One the front cover is a rosette from the 1800s with the face of a little boy in a hat tin-type peering through. The holes are backed with vintage red and white striped fabric that I found at an abandoned house (my favourite!) and I stitched it on with heavy book binding thread!

On the back, through a natural tear in the leather, I put a piece of an olde journal entry form Germany, written in 1915!

This is a hardbound book with acid free book board beneath the leather. Otherwise constructed as usual!

9 1/2 inches high
6 1/2 inches wide
1 3/4 inch spine
142 sheets (282 pages)

the pages are 6x9

Materials: (archival innards, antique & gathered outards)
leather - antique leather
paper - Strathmore drawing, acid-free, hand torn and stitched.
thread and binding tape - linen
headband - found in London, vintage

My books are made using archival insides and antique outsides. My husband doesn't like the name, so maybe only this will be called Barnacle.

Meta Stelly leather journal with a hole leading to a a bit of a diary entry

$110.00
A few weekend ago it is but a new book has been made!

This weekend in an attempt to get away from The Rain (Oh how I used to love the rain!) that hammered down against the house AND within, I visited my Granma who lives upon a mountain. When there, we wander about to antique stores and civil war cemetaries. This time I found many treasures including a small piece of a deer hide that has been hanging around since the 1950's.

I conditioned the leather to make it a bit darker. This also brought out some of the marks that have come to exist upon the leather.

The hole was in the leather, from the stretching. It is darker on the inside and frames the antique paper nicely. I cut a small scrap out of a diary signed by what seemed to read Meta Stelly (it is in German) 1916

I sealed the paper with matte varnish so it will not go away.

The inside edge is finished with a scrumptious little detail... vintage red and white striped fabric that I discovered in an abandoned house!

Size:
6 inches high
4 1/2 inches wide
1 inch spine
100 sheets (200 pages)

Materials: (archival innards, antique & gathered outards)
leather - Leather
paper - Strathmore drawing, acid-free, hand torn and stitched.
thread and binding tape - linen
headband - found in London, vintage
neutral pH adhesive

Got me to listening to olde cowboy songs for a title. Søren. my little nugget, is dancing to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

I made this out of the most worn and malleable part of the olde cowboy spats that I found in NY. This, about the company that made them!

Blake Miller
1900s-1920s
Saddlery-Saddle Maker

Primarily a saddle maker in Cheyenne from 1900s through mid 20s, Miller was known for his ornate and beautifully tooled saddles which often carried pictorials on the fenders. He carried a complete leather line in addition to featuring silver inlaid bits and spurs made by other makers including GS Garcia, Morales, Crockett and Phillips & Gutierrez.

This book is a whopper! The details can be viewed in the photographs. The olde hardware is where it originally was on the chaps - I situated them to be decorative and not functional.

I lined the edges in my favourite red and white striped fabric (cut on a diagonal) that I found at an abandoned house.

Size:
9 inches high
6 inches wide
1 1/4 inch spine
120 sheets (240 pages)

Materials: (archival innards, antique & gathered outards)
leather - antique leather
paper - Strathmore drawing, acid-free, hand torn and stitched.
thread and binding tape - linen
headband - found in London, vintage

My books are made using archival insides and antique outsides.

Archival Pigment Inkjet Print
This listing 8x10 limited edition of 100.
Ready to frame. Bayard, inventor of the
process that has just been shown to you. As far as I know this indefatigable
experimenter has been occupied for about three years with his discovery.
The Government which has been only too generous to Monsieur Daguerre, has said
it can do nothing for Monsieur Bayard, and the poor wretch has drowned himself.
Oh the vagaries of human life....! ... He has been at the morgue for several
days, and no-one has recognized or claimed him. Ladies and gentlemen, you'd
better pass along for fear of offending your sense of smell, for as you can
observe, the face and hands of the gentleman are beginning to decay.

**********************************************************

This image was created in many parts, from digital to tangible then back again and again.

Pigment Inkjet Print for this listing 8x10 limited edition of 100.
