With 54 teeth per inch, the Howard brush company flicker is perfect for those of us who prefer to spin from the lock or work with fleece. The flicker is 8.5 inches by 1.5 inches. The gentle curve of the handle allows the flicker to rest nicely in your hand. As you can see from the photos, the flicker is used by brushing the ends out of a lock of fleece. This removes veggie matter and short bits prior to spinning or carding or felting.

The Howard Brush Company flicker also works wonders when it comes to cleaning your hand carders or drum carder, helping to remove left over bits of fluff from the cloth of your carder at the end of a carding project.

I honestly do not know what I would do with out a flicker as they are such a very versatile tools when it comes to fiber arts.

Please use your flicker with caution as the teeth can scratch you if used improperly.

Proper use of your flicker......
Hold a lock of fleece by one end in one hand near the end. Using the carder in your other hand, gently brush out the end of the lock. Hold the lock by the 'just brushed out end' and repeat the process. Be very careful not to brush the hand you are using to hold the lock as the teeth of the flicker will scratch your skin.

This is not a toy so please do not let children play with the flicker unsupervised.

I simply can not begin to describe how luscious these batts are! Well, I can start with an OMG. These started as part of my fiber club. Honestly, if I have to look at either of these selections for too terribly long, THEY WILL BE SPUN!

It all started with a mess of fibers I received from a supplier (note, we will not be using this supplier ever again!). The tangled mess started as a wad of pure white 60% mulberry silk tangled together with about 40% merino here and there. I'm very thrifty, so I really could not tolerate the idea of chucking this soft fiber. Off to the carder I went. After the first pass through the carder, I started stripping the batts into 5 peices. Taking one strip from each batt, I would send the batts back through the carder. This was done 10 times!

Once the prime consistency was met in these batts, I added a touch of green and blue glitz as well as silk noils and neps and sent them back through one more time. At this point, I'm sure you have seen my shop and know that I'm a HUGE fan of color. I blended several batts consisting of earthy brown merino and camel; brown merino, black corriedale, green sari silk and natural camel down; ocean blue and warm teal merino topped with black corriedale and blue tussah silk; and last but not least hand dyed aqua alpaca fleece, ecru bamboo, and snow white firestar. These fun batts were then layered into the final result which you see here. Oh, yes, there is a touch of white banana fiber in there.

We had a discussion a while back on the Etsyfast group about pricing. If I calculate the price of these batts by my time, I have well over 17 hours into these batts and at minimum wage of $7.25 the hourly price of my work would be $123.25.

Two batt groups available each weighs 4.7 ounces. Price is per 4.7 ounce.

I added one of these to my spinning herd not to long ago. Let me tell you! I LUUUUURVE IT! Not only can I spin some fun art yarns with it due to the 1/2" orifice, but I really am enjoying the fact that I don't need to remember what I have done with my orifice hook each time I start on new roving or break my single.

Louët wheels treadle lightly, are low maintenance and nearly adjustment free and can be modified with accessories for the expert spinner.

Louët wheels were originally geared towards spinning medium to heavy yarns. Although bobbins and flyers are available for spinning this type of yarn, the standard wheels have been redesigned to be more suitable for spinning fine to medium yarns. I want to start by telling you that the color in the picture is not the true color of this yarn. Well, at least not on my monitor. It is green, but more of a wonderfully hued deep hunter green. The soft squishy merino 80's count top lent it's self to the green cotton binder thread to create luscious hives and sinfully soft coils. Spun thick and thin, this yarn will look gorgeous in any garment.

Louet Standard Drum Carders are made of laminated birch and have a hard white coating. The drums of the carders are 19 cm (7 1/2") wide. In order to ensure a long life, the teeth on all Louët carders are made of high grade plated steel wire. All gearboxes are enclosed to prevent fibers entering the gear system.

The sweetest little carder to get you started carding your own batts!

Made of laminated birch and have a hard white coating. The drums of the Junior Carder is 10 cm (4") wide). In order to ensure a long life, the teeth on all Louët carders are made of high grade plated steel wire. All gearboxes, except for the Elite drumcarder, are enclosed to prevent fibers entering the gear system.

Junior drumcarders have an extra fine cloth (72 teeth per square inch). The advantage of this extra fine cloth is that you also can perfectly card very fine fibers.
All drumcarders are equipped with a doffer brush, doffer pin and two table clamps to clamp it onto a sturdy table. An instruction manual written by well known author and fiber artist Deb Menz is included with all drumcarders.

OH Boy! Thanks to the 100% merino your feet can luxuriate in smooth softness. I don't know about you, but I am constantly suffering from second sock syndrome. In other words, I will finish one sock and the other pair will hang around on the needles for a year or more. The yarn I picked has 1322 yards per pound and will knit up very quickly on US size 3-5 needles, thus helping us all put an end to SECOND SOCK SYNDROME.....

This yarn is superwash, so it should be washing machine safe on the delicate cycle, but to be on the safe side, I would still say it is a good idea to lay your knit or crochet articles flat to dry.

I bet you are wondering what the heck I am talking about! Well, I start by hand dying various tops. Then I pick my colors and fibers to be drum carded and card until I am happy with the consistency. From there I use my upcycled diz to pull the fiber off of my carder.

Diz - a fancy word for 'something with a hole punched through it, through which fiber is pulled'.

A little muddy slice of the rainbow this Diz is. Started with a base of hand dyed warm chocolate romney, added a touch of grassy green merino, a sliver of multi colored silk, natural bamboo top, turquoise firestar and I think there might be a smidgen of royal blue mohair here as well.

Please note... Hand dizzed rovings are NOT created at a mill. Each batch is custom blended by me on my hand cranked drum carder and then dizzed by hand off the carder. Picked this lovely little yarn up on a whim. I thought I'd try 10 skeins and see how well it takes my dyes. OH MY! Was I ever surprised when I pulled these beautiful skeins out of the pot. They are gorgeous! A thick and thin wool and acrylic blend single plied with a single of acrylic. I will tell you right now. I don't like (hate) acrylic, but I can't keep from touching these skeins in wonder of how lovely they are! I have one dyed just for me that I keep picking up to love on. Super soft on your face. I will definitely be getting more of this yarn.

This unfinished solid wheel presents you with the possibility to create your own unique finish. This is the wheel with all the standard features for the lowest price. It's careful design has proven it to be an ideal wheel for beginners and experts alike. A matching skein-winder with a foldable cross is available as an accessory.

Certainly the best features of the Louet wheels are that they treadle lightly, are easy to learn on and can be modified to satisfy the expert spinners.

The orifice on this wheel is sufficiently large; 12.5 mm (1/2"), as are the bobbins (180-250 gr. capacity); to allow you to create novelty yarns. A Wide Flyer and Bulky Bobbins are also available for this wheel to accommodate spinning bulkier yarns.

The fly wheel is 50 cm (20") in diameter.

For drumcarders it is common to mention the gear ratio that drives the licker-in when you rotate the large drum. You get this by multiplying the gear ratio with the ratio of the diameters of the large drum and the licker-in. Why do I name it suicide you ask, well I am basing the suicide series on the snow cones I had as a child and still enjoy into my adulthood. They would be fabulous plied with other singles or plied on thier own! The last picture is a sample of how the suicides spin up:)

The perfect first wheel!

This single treadle wheel is designed with the budget conscious spinner in mind! Smooth ball bearing operation like all Louet wheels, easy treadling, and a well balanced wheel that won’t disappoint! Comes as a kit with assembly instructions. A great wheel at a really great price!

Louët wheels were originally geared towards spinning medium to heavy yarns. Although bobbins and flyers are available for spinning this type of yarn, the standard wheels have been redesigned to be more suitable for spinning fine to medium yarns. The orifice on the standard wheel is sufficiently large (12.5 mm or 1/2") as are the bobbins, (180-250 gr capacity), to allow you to create novelty yarns.
Wheels come equipped with a two bobbin lazy kate.

Technically all Louet models are the same. Each wheel has a single belt bobbin drive with an adjustable flyer brake to regulate the tension. The flexible belts are made of polyurethane and never have to be adjusted.

All wheels are packed and shipped partially assembled in a flat box. The required assembly consists quite simply of tightening two nuts for which tools and instructions are provided. The shipping weight is 17-18 lbs.

Ratios
All bobbins have a sheave with three settings on one side that can be used to obtain three different spinning ratios. They are: 1:5.5 for slow spinning and heavy yarn; 1:7.5 for medium yarn; and, 1:10.5 for fast spinning and fine yarn. (S45 ratios are: 7:1, 12:1 and 20:1)

The fly wheels of all our models are 50 cm (20") in diameter (except for the S45). They rotate on a maintenance free, lubricated for life ball bearing pack to ensure excellent spinning ability by allowing them to turn freely and quitely. The same maintenance free ball bearing is used at the footman connection. (Absolutely no lubrication is necessary for the bearings to work correctly)

Wheels are made of laminated hardwood with a "birch" exterior finish.

Louet sends 8 ounces of fiber (usually coopworth roving) with every wheel.

A new addition to the shop. 'BFL Sock' is a wonderful high twist sock yarn which has become very popular as of late for added yarn durability. Mind, this does not in any way shape or form compramise the softness of BFL yarn.
