MOD Empire Dress --- OP ART print in Blue & White – M
MAKES ME THINK OF MARIMEKKO!

Great MOD OP ART print in blue and white. This empire waist dress is longer than most of the later minis, but still really cute so I hemmed it shorter (blind hemming, of course!), after I had photographed it. The skirt flares out in an A-line, and zips up the back with a nylon zipper.

It is well-made by a home seamstress with inside edges with binding, turned under, or pinked.

Label: none. One-way stretch textured knit polyester (I think).

Back shoulder width: 16" (40 cm)

The line shows the current hem when I blind hemmed it, to keep it true to the 60's & 70's.

80s Vintage Forties-style Peplum Dress -- Slinky Cinnamon - small

80’s does 40's -- Slinky peplum dress - small 7/8

Button-front peplum dresses -- one of the favorite Eighties retro looks -- Wear it now for a Retro Retro look! The sexy peplum look, of course, is the focus. It is inserted vertically in the front, down either side of the buttons, and swoops longer in the back.

Cinnamon textured polyester with ink-dot black flowers is made up in a classic shirt-collar front with gathered puff sleeves. Undarted (and with no shoulder pads yet!), it just loosely closes into the waist with inverted pleats. Large black buttons secure the front, with a hook closure at the waist.

The short sleeves and hem are blind hemmed, not top-stitched, and end below the knee, making a classic Forties slinky profile.

Sweet Seventies puff sleeve dress - medium 10/12

Jewel necklines with pearl button back closures -- popular sweet dresses of the 1970's! This one is a pale lemon chiffon yellow with a subtle white floral print, and two yellow buttons with fabric closures on the neck.

The blouson bodice has shoulder yoke pleats for added fullness. The elbow-length short puff sleeves have little pillows in them to keep them puffy, and top-stitched. There's a firm elasticized waist -- all for that soft late 70's secretary modesty! The skirt hem is blind hemmed, ending below the knee, making a sweet secretary profile.

I've paired it with a vintage 80's belt -- stretch band with yellow enamel buckle -- perfect match!

1960-63 Patio dress - Yellow with black gold trim - Small Med

1960-63 Patio dress - Yellow with black & gold trim - small to medium

These dresses used to be called "squaw dresses", since it is a style favored by the women of the southwestern Indian nations. However, that word is from the obscenity for women's privates. http://www.bluecorncomics.com/squaw.htm. I ignorantly grew up using the term, not connecting the minimizing misogyny of the dress name to the wider society.

The skirt style was properly called "broomstick" among Native Americans, they having learned it from the white pioneers. Of course, when whites co-opted the style during the 50's Rodeo craze, they called it "squaw" in ignorance. My mother had two of them during the 50's, made in crinkle cotton gauze, to emulate the texture that the broomstick wrap gave to Native American skirts. This dress is slightly later -- in nylon "whipped cream" fabric -- again, that crinkle texture. That fabric came out in the very early 60's - 1960-63.

The bodice has wide peasant puff sleeves, and has darts both side and bottom. The neck and sleeves are bordered with rolled bias binding of the same fabric. The rick-rack -- in rows of 4 or 8, is black with gold threads, and there's a lovely band of gold-and-black trim. It zips with a metal zipper. The waist is elasticized at the back, with thread belt loops. I show it here with a belt (not included) , but a wide one would be cute, too. It has french seams on the bodice, raw seams on the skirt, and the tiers are machine-gathered. The hem is a narrow machine chain stitched below the ric-rack.

This classic style is loaded with rick-rack -- more than 56 yards of it. Just the rick-rack alone would cost $20-40! Then, of course, stitching it down would take quite some time.

80s Red and White Stripe Lucite Earrings NEW - Small Hypoallergenic studs

These earrings are from the balance of my new deadstock from 1982..from a box tucked away since then. These were among those in the recently-found box.

Small elliptical lucite earrings, about 5/8" (1.5 cm) wide. These candy stripes have a lovely glow to them, since this plastic is fused, and the color layers go all the way through. These have stainless hypoallergenic posts and backs.

Vintage, still on their plastic cards, never worn.

I thought they were all gone until I found this little box... I have some square ones like this that I'll list when I get them photoed.

These are a parellelogram, about 7/8" (2 cm) on a side, this plastic is fused, so the color layers go all the way through. The rainbow colors are lavender, red, yellow, green, blue, & light blue. These have stainless hypoallergenic posts and backs. The circles and squares are already gone...I think these are the absolute last!

Vintage, still in their plastic bags, never worn.

I thought they were all gone (and just the tiny raibow studs were hiding somewhere) until I found this little box...but after these, I know for sure there are no more. So as soon as are I get them photoed, I'll have the tiny rainbow studs listed, too.

Perfect for Valentine's Day parties! TWO keyholes on this sexy red lace dress! A huge circular one on the back, reaching almost to the waist, and a smaller pointed one in the front. The front keyhole falls beneath a dog collar neckline, to a hint of decolletage. It has a rhinestone band across the chest. The back keyhole is finished with two looped buttons tight around the neck.

The sizzling ribbon lace dress is lined with a polyester knit, but the sleeves are unlined and see-through.

This fitted dress with (of course) shoulder pads zips up the back, and has a slash opening at the hem, which is blindstitched. There is a a lot of give to the lace and the lining, since it’s meant to be worn skin tight!

Vintage 70s Puff Sleeve Navy Stripe Dress with piping and belt - M medium

1970's Puff Sleeve Dark Blue Striped Dress
Matching belt with snakeskin buckle
size Medium

Tiny aqua, goldenrod and pink stripes on a navy background give the appearance of wide stripes of navy, purple and turquoise. Horizontal stripes on top, vertical stripes on the skirt with a lower panel of more horizontal stripes. The big puff sleeves give the ever-fave inverted triangle of femme style. The sleeves are so gathered and light they hold the puff.

The blouson top has turquoise piping around the square neck with a pearl button closure, and an elasticized waist with self fabric loops. There’s a seamed hem, but the lack of serged seams places this in the 70’s. The fabric has a lovely sheen, which looks better now that I've ironed it!

Vintage Guatemalan Ethnic Weave Dress - Hot Pink - L XL

So many pretty hand woven fabrics come from the looms of Guatemala. This one features a textured woven band inset in a square neckline, with a different textured border woven into the bottom of the skirt. Backstrap loom and foot loom weaving all in one dress!

The gaucho vaqueros woven into the skirt are the cutest -- there are 2 color combinations…each has a flowing green sash. You could wear this loosely without a belt, but it’s great with this central American woven belt (not included), or even a leather belt.

This probably dates from the mid 1980's, which is when I bought the woven belt, and when these dresses were widely imported.

GODDESS TOP BLACK TUBE DRESS --

This stretchy tube dress is designed to balance a small top with curvy hips! Perfect for you pear-shaped ladies!

The top is sheer black chiffon with red roses and turquoise leaves, diving all the way to the midriff. It’s like a goddess wrap. You can’t tell in the pix, because there is a black flower pin holding the wrap section together. There is plenty of fabric which is ruched (well, to be accurate -- not ruched but shirred) at the shoulders and gathered, front & back, into the midriff-fitting tube. The bodice is lined, but the long sleeves are sheer.
Big shoulder pads add to the top-enhancing effect -- you could take them out and the dress would still fit beautifully. Classic tube material, with no loss of stretchiness. No zipper or buttons.

(Her bra band hides the skin in the V in the back and a flower pin covers the deep wrap in the front )

Pale Blue Tuck Front Dress
Long Sleeve, Textured polyester - M/L

Can there be anything more innocent than this dress -- at least in pale blue? Not true baby blue, but with the slightest hint of aqua to it. It has puff-gathered long sleeves and a flat front with tuxedo-like pin tucks. A band of embroidered lace extends from the bias-bound jewel neck down to the gathered waist. The bodice and the skirt (slightly sheer) are made from textured (like tiny pebbles) polyester. The 3/4 sleeves have straight cuffs, no buttons, with the blue embroidery trim as the chest.. The waist is elastic, with a fabric-covered buckled belt of the dress fabric. Zips up the back with a nylon zipper, hook-and-eye top closure. The hem has been machine blind-stitched.

JuJu just had to play silly -- hence the Bernadette pose -- the dress seemed so virginal to the both of us!!!

Jane Eyre would wear this today! This suit hints of the heather-covered hills of the North Coast. Open cropped jacket with pleated puff sleeves. Tiny little herringbone tweed. Very simple jacket – no buttons, no collar, just lapels, almost a bolero style. Beautiful satiny lining.
 
The skirt is a simple A-line, with the gathered front between the pockets that was a carry-over from the 1960's. It has diagonal (slash) side pockets, a back zipper, and is not lined. Blouse is no longer available.

This is the kind of vintage knit they can't copy today!

This dress might actually be earlier in the 1960's, since Bleecker Street was the mecca for the 60's Greenwich Village scene. http://georgegraham.com/reviews/bleeker.html" . It still shows that fitted waist style, set into the top with tiny gathers, that preceded the Mod A-lines. The bodice is a ribbed knit, with dropped stitches to create holey see-through stars, and has a round neck with a set-in neckband that closes with 2 hooks.

The yarn has that stiffness of the early acrylics, a fine gauge thread with silvery nylon threads through out.

Narrow self belt with looped ends. Nylon zipper in the back, sleeves and skirt are blind-hemmed.

70’s Puff Sleeve Secretary Dress
Triangle bib collar -- Small

Tiny little asymmetric pinstripes on this semi- sheer turquoise dress. The collar is in two flaps -- front only. The back closes at the generous neckline with hook-and-eye. The elbow-length sleeves have single blue dome button closings -- leave them open for comfort, I'd think. The puff sleeves have tiny gathers, but no padding to keep them up -- so very early in the puff-sleeve era.

The waist is elasticized above the straight skirt, which is blind-hemmed by hand with a narrow hem. The elastic has lost a lot of its stretch, so this is best worn with a belt -- no problem, this being a season of wide belts!

Great Arabian-inspired design in Orange, Black & White on this sheer taupe dress. The panel print is accordion pleats on the bodice, and plain fabric in the skirt. The puff sleeves have elastic cuffs, and little pads sewn in the sleeves to keep them puffy.

The skirt and sleeves remain sheer, while the bodice is lined with a plain taupe polyester. The waist is elasticized above the straight, which is blind-hemmed. The narrow self tie belt has one coppery bead at the end…the other perhaps lost.

70’s Knit Sweater Dress
Red & Black with metal button collar -- Large 14-16

This sweater dress is a faux vest style -- very popular in the late 70's Annie Hall started it all! And the crisp sailor/military look.

The striking red and black plaid faux vest makes it look like there's a black puff sleeve dress under, with broad shoulders and and a white stand-up collar. Three metal buttons in parallel, joined by metal chains, complete the military look. They say "The Devonshire Regi(ment)". They let the white ribbed knit faux dickey and collar peek through. The vest part is a heavyduty knit plaid in red and black --big squates of dark red, and narrow lines of black.

No shoulder pads, just a little gather of lightweight lining fabric to hold up the puffs The sleeves are heavy fine guage knit, with blind-hemmed straight cuffs. The skirt, with its loose pleated front, and eased back, is the same heavy-duty smooth knit fabric. It's a dropped waist, hanging at hip level.

Long back zipper and hook-and-eye closure. The hem is blined hemmed by machine. Ends below the knee.

Very little pilling to this acrylic fabric, but it *is* inevitable with acrylic yarn, unless the item is brand new. So I'd still call the condition of this dress excellent. Very well made and striking attention to detail, for the day.

Paisley Print Maxi DRESS with ruffled capelet - Vintage 1970s - XL to XXL

70’s Paisley Print Maxi DRESS - Magenta and Olive -- XL to XXL (top).

Paisley prints were ubiquitous in the 1970's. This one combines opposite shades in a beautiful rich and dark print. Shades of magenta, dark olive green, white and black in a very central-asian-looking design. It's a knit polyester print, so there's quite a bit of stretch.

This is a companion dress to the cryptic owl one, but with a bodice one size larger. The bodice is empire in the back, and curved seams wrap around the front up to the neckline, and darted at the underarm. The neckline is wide and curved, with added piping of the same fabric. Nice fitted short sleeves, blind-hemmed. It zips up the back with a nylon zipper, with even darted shoulders. It's larger at the bust than the other one, so will accomodate a bustier woman.

It has a cute reversible ruffled capelet - perfect for the evening coverups. The cape has fitted shoulders, and longer in the back -- beautiful gracefulness. It's piped along the neck and front edges with the same fabric, to give a nice finished look. as the lining The lining is a woven polyester in the same dark olive shade as the dress, and closes with a single large, fabric-covered snap

So 60's/70's -- but the fabric is more 1970s. It gives a curvy outline without being super fitted. It is blind-hemmed by hand. In fact, the entire dress was well-made by a home seamstress -- that's probably why there is a slight pattern/fabric disconnect.

If you'd like this hemmed at another length, I can do it. If machine top-stitching is OK, I'll do it for free. If you want blind-hemmed, tho, there will be an extra charge.

Vintage 70s Boho Carrie Disco Faux Wrap Dress

This dress features the top wrap of the 70’s…I guess you could call it a faux wrap. The lined bodice, and the skirt (slightly sheer) are made from crinkle pleat polyester. The long sleeves with elasticized cuffs are made from plain fabric. The waist is elastic, too, with a pink satin cord tie belt. There are a series of fabric-covered buttons down the side of the front, The bottom has a rolled hem, which gives it a twirly flirty feel.

Despite (or because of) the braless state of many women, they had to pin the top to prevent NIPPLE ALERT! And there’s a little pin mark at the wrap point on this dress, too (arrow). There’s also another mark across the back…looks like it was made with a tracing wheel on red tracing paper. You can see it if you know it's there, otherwise it's almost imperceptible (arrows). There are also a few places with tight threads which interrupt the flow of the pleats.

Vintage 60s Scooter Coat Dress gray stripes and polka dots MEDIUM

Dots and stripes in shades of gary! Its Mandarin collar is from the same striped double-knit as the button panel and belt, in contrast to the tone-on-tone gary polka dots.

Courreges started the coatdress "craze". with double breasted dresses, but the ideas were already starting with button-front dresses like this.

The silver tone buttons are carefully aligned down the middle gray stripe of the front closing, using two-hole ones to keep up the stripe line. The bodice has curved panels for a better fit, front and back, with a slight hint of a waistline, so this is not true A-line. above-the-knee, but would be hard to modify to make shorter because of the button panesl. The fabric is a polyester doubleknit which from the feel, though the higher-end dresses like this would have been wool. Of course it has a proper blind hem. on the bottom and the long sleeves.

1970s Vintage Empire Maxi Dress - deep V Mod neck - small

Apron styles & Pinafore ties showed up everywhere in 1970s fashions. This one takes a heavy creamy polyester knit to tie in the back below the empire waist. It has a bib-style front with 4 fabric covered looped buttons…you could leave them open for sexy decolletage! It has a wide pointed MOD collar.

The bodice is gathered with elastic below the bust, but it doesn’t stretch very much. The shoulders appear narrow because of the pinafore style, and there are gathers on the shoulders for the big puff dolman sleeves, elasticized.

The skirt falls straight from the gathered empire…you could use this for maternity if you wanted. 50”. No zipper, and is blind hemmed.

If you want me to hem this up into a short dress for you, just aski -- I'm handy with that needle and thread!

This set comes from the time when acetate velour had just been invented, and was sooo desirable. It was the velvet that you could actually wear, since there is a little stretch to it. The colors are meant to stand out on gray metropolis streets, like San Francisco, Chicago or Manhattan.

The long sleeved top is like Persimmon on Fire, and the skirt includes colors of green, cobalt and purple. You could wear the sweater out, or tucked in to the button-up skirt. The maxi skirt buttons at the waist with two metal ball buttons, and nine more buttons extend to mid-calf.

This is in such superb condition that I don’t think this has ever been worn. The skirt has more green than some of the pix -- the colors in this fabric react differently to the camera. I tried to adjust as well as I could.

You’d think a size 36 would mean men’s, but this dynamite over shirt is cut like it’s for a woman. It’s the perfect jacket for the more sporty rockabilly look, in a great dark brown tiny houndstooth heavy polyester knit fabric. Wear this as a lightweight jacket over a Tee, Tank or Halter.

Super wide disco collar, big brown bark-patterned buttons, and two button flap pockets on each breast. The shorter (3/4?) sleeves looks best unbuttoned. Straight bottom, and slits on each side. You could wear this buttoned as just a shirt, but it would hide your curves!

This Shirt Jac looks black & white, but it’s really a dark dark brown & white.

1940's style SWING COAT - Top-stitched roll collar and cuffs
can fit 6 to 14

Rockabilly pinup babes don't go out in the winter without their cute swing coat -- and this one is a Classic!

Light gray-taupe brushed wool, flecked like oatmeal. The collar and lapel have three parallel rows of top stitching for add interest and contrast. They curve around to the hem and back, and the stitching follows. The wide cuffs have the same stitching, and roll up, a few inches above the wrist. It has two slash pockets in front, with bound edges in the same wool.

The lining, probably rayon, has faded with time, to a shade of mauve. It has a few water marks on it, but the armholes are clear, clean and intact.

Since this is most likely 100% wool, the moths did find it and nibble a bit. A tiny spot on the shoulder, and on the lower sleeves. All the moth nibbles are shown in the pictures.

This is a totally fun coat with a quintessential cut.

Striped Sweater Dress -- 1980s tshirt knit - Large 12 14

Black & White Calf length -- M

Not quite Electro, but still striking in that loud 80's way. These wide black, white, and striped stripes make quite a horizontal statement! But the vertical rib knit, with the long skinny sleeves and skirt, well, there you have it!

Both the shoulders open with three big black buttons, and have medium-size shoulder pads. The sleeves are cut low -- not dolman, because they are separate pieces. But attached square, not set-in curved.

It had some elastic inside at the waist, which has relaxed with the years. But the thread belt loops and a big wide belt from you make them really unnecessary. The arm and bottom hems are blind hemmed, not top stitched.

The acrylic has the inevitable pilling -- so I'd call the condition of this dress very good, not excellent. Of course NO stains or tears! But it's just too much fun to pass up!

This is the coolest open-neck, pointed-collar blouse I've seen in a long time! It's all-over covered with dominoes, separated by red. It has the curved-waist, un-darted construction of the typical 70's polyester shirts -- designed to be worn tight since they have a lot of stretch.

It buttons down the front with 5 white buttons, and the long sleeves have a large, 2-button cuffs. The bottom is straight, to be worn inside or out.

70’s Sheer Crinkle top Peplum Two-tone Dress
Keyhole Tie Ruffle Neck -- Small

The sweetest ruffle surrounds the keyhole tie neck of this dress. You could leave it open, too and let the ties dangle, like the poet blouse top it is.

The pale taupe bodice has paisley sizes scattered about in tones of rust, white & steel blue. The body, neck & cuffs are an accordion pleat crinkle version of the same fabric, which is a sheer polyester knit in a pattern that’s almost pointelle. Long sleeves, with an elasticized ruffle.

The peplum waist is gathered with elastic, and covers an A-line skirt of slinky satiny polyester knit in a reddish-plum claret shade . No zipper, and it’s blind hemmed.

Wow! This is a tour-de-force tunic!
The Fabric -- Swiss dot with embossed with flower petals -- an amazing textured vintage fabric.
The Sleeves -- Enormous leg-o-mutton sleeves poufing above 9" gauntlets.
The Construction: completely lined, excellent handmade workmanship.

This Empire-style tunic is absolutely ultimate Prairie Style! It has darts front and back for a good fit, zips up the back to the jewel neckline, and ties in the back with a wide sash. The front has a lace-defined bib, and the same lace extends down the leg of mutton sleeve tops. The lower sleeve gauntlets, also lined, taper to the wrist and close with three small snaps each.

The dusty pink fabric, covered with embossed dots, has lavender and green flowers with embosssed white petals. scrumptious!

Psychedelic Zig Zag Halter Maxi dress - 1960s vintage - S to M

70’s Chevron Zig-Zag Stripe Maxi DRESS - Black & White -- small to medium (top).

PSYCHEDELIC HALLUCINATIONS! This has a fantastic border print -- the stripes grade in thickness and size all the way to the ground!

Groovy Halter Tops -- Sixties. Maxi Dresses -- Seventies. So lets just call this one 1969! It's a polyester doubleknit, so it's heavy with quite a bit of stretch.

This dress is so cool. It's a straight A-line - quintessential 60's. It ties at the neck -- no hooks on the neckband. The back top had a loose elastic -- I replaced it with a tighter one. It looks like it fits OK, but my model has very broad shoulders, and it would be loose on most people. I also restitched the arm sides, since the threads had loosened over time, as they do with all that stretch. The hem is blind-hemmed.

If you need me to shorten this, I can do it for free if I just machine top-stitch. If you want me to blind hem it, I can, but I'll have to charge me. convo me!

Vintage 1980's Puff Sleeve PINK Print Dress
Contrast shoulder & Belt –
size Medium 8/9

This dress has contrast elements of Pink at the shoulder, sleeve cuffs, and tie belt. The blouson top has a pearl button closings at the neck, and on the huge puff sleeves. Sweet pastels of pink, green, lavender & white. Pale tropical, with pink & lavender pineapples!

The waist is elasticized above an A-line skirt, with its own fabric belt that is a 1-1/2" band in the back and skinny ties in the front. Pellon interfacing keeps the sleeves puffed.

Label: "Bee Darlin’ made in California". 50/50 Rayon/Polyester. Size 11/12 (a 9 today)

Puff Sleeve PINK Striped SECRETARY Dress, vintage 1970s
Pearl Button shoulder & Belt –

Ahh- more sweet secretary colors of beige, pink & white. Horizontal stripes on top, vertical stripes on the skirt & big puff sleeves give the ever-fave inverted triangle of femme style. The sleeves are lined with tricot to permanently hold the puff.

The blouson top has two pearl buttons on the left shoulder and an elasticized waist. Of course the skirt is properly hemmed. The fabric has a lovely sheen and a slightly nubby weave. And I'm including a matching belt.

Vintage 70s MOD Rainbow plaid Suit 2 pc A-line Summer short-sleeve -- Small

Yup -- Plaids were HUGE in the 70s! This 2-piece outfit reflects the crossover from MOD to the pink collar workplace. It has the huge notched mod collar, but is polyester. Everyone was so excited about WASHABLE!

The form-hugging top has cuffs on the short sleeves, is below-hip length with a long single vent in back. It closes with 3 big pearl buttons, and has cute diagonal patch pockets of the front. The skirt is a diagonally cut slim A-line, with both a wide elastic waistband & thread belt loops. The colors are Pink & yellow, pastel blue & pastel green, on a white background. The top is unlined, and the skirt blind hemmed.

NOTE: in some of the pics the colors are off. The plaid color is pink NOT lavender, and the green is darker, like in the skirt pic.
