Story: The wrathful gods of Tibet's ancient religion, Bon, survived in Buddhist iconography as fierce protectors of the new faith. Their angry appearance--snarling mouths baring fangs, burning halos wreathing their bodies, and jewelry made of human skulls--served to guard Buddhists from evil spirits and distraction from the Teaching (or Dharma), and was directed ultimately towards ignorance of truth.

Story: The beauty of shan shui (literally, “mountain-water”) painting in the Chinese art tradition lies not only in its play of abstract forms, evocative use of positive and negative space, and emphasis on feeling and imagination--but also in the philosophy that guides this genre of painting.

Influenced by Daoism (Taoism with a “T” if you're old school) and Confucianism, these paintings of mountains and water ultimately reflected the majesty of nature and the interaction between eternity and time. People were often portrayed as tiny in relationship to the landscape (unlike European art, that placed people at the center of the world), observing the steadfast mountains being carved and washed away patiently by water that trickled, rushed, and fell.

Three brilliant blue incarnations of Here Kitty sit on lotuses, turning for a backwards glance while a cool green river flows from a faraway mountaintop. An exploration of patterns and change, damage and renewal, this reproduction of one of my Original Finger Paintings reveals that true perfection never rests, but only appears to stay still if one is too busy to notice.

Story: In China and Japan, blossoming (ornamental) plum and cherry trees represent strength in adversity and the ephemeral beauty of life, respectively.

For the Chinese, because the plum (member of the same genus Prunus as cherries) blooms in even the bitterest winter despite its delicate blossoms, it is a symbol of fortitude and perseverance.

For the Japanese, cherry blossoms—or sakura (sah-koo-rah)—with their short season, reflected the poignant brevity and beauty of life. It blooms in spring, and is a reminder to savor the day.

When a friend from high school found me through the Internet after we had lost touch for thirteen years, it was a thrill to hear her voice again. I made this image, with its iridescent golds, blues, and reds contrasting with the dreamy white and pale pink flowers while thinking of her, and our friendship: reawakened and blossoming anew.

Story: The mynah bird is renowned for its ability to imitate human speech (as well as other sounds), and is caught and caged as a pet for this talent.

One night, I had a dream of a mynah escaping its cage. The cage had no door, as if it were always free to leave but never knew it could—and then it did, and the bird flew to freedom.

I told a colleague about this dream and she replied, “Isn’t that what you do all day?” When I worked as a sign language interpreter, yes, in a funny way that was what I was doing—repeating what someone else said.

The dream was not an idle fantasy, or even a message; no, it was an urging, a command: FLY. Sing your own songs and let the music come from within you!

And that’s how I became an artist.

Story: A commissioned painting I couldn't resist sharing with others, the original finger painting celebrated one of my collector's unabashed love of chickens.

The wonderful bird above is based off of the Araucana breed from Chile and is famous for its blue-green eggs as well as its plumage. I've adopted an East Asian inspired turquoise halo for it to emphasize the interconnectedness, or divinity, we share with everything in the world. The chicken has provided food, warmth, and delight to us for centuries. It's the recognition of our relationships that brings out our compassion and lowers our fences.

Story: In China and Japan, blossoming (ornamental) plum and cherry trees represent strength in adversity and the ephemeral beauty of life, respectively.

For the Chinese, because the plum (member of the same genus Prunus as cherries) blooms in even the bitterest winter despite its delicate blossoms, it is a symbol of fortitude and perseverance.

For the Japanese, cherry blossoms--or sakura (sah-koo-rah)--with their short season, reflected the poignant brevity and beauty of life. It blooms in spring, and is a reminder to savor the day.

Recently, a friend from high school found me through the Internet (thanks, eBay!). We had lost touch for 13 years, so it was a thrill to hear her voice again. Story: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) has been interpreted as an artistic representation of McCarthyism and the Red Scare, when Americans were terrorized by their own government into thinking that anyone could be an enemy to their freedom and way of life. Sound familiar?

Don Siegel, the director of this sci-fi classic, didn't see any anti-communist message in his film. Instead, he saw the undercurrent of the struggle between the pods and people: conformity versus individualism. However, it wasn't the body-snatching that caused the conformity--it was our own willingness to let our humanity slip away. The pods were just capitalizing on an opportunity.
