Tiffany Stone/Tsavorite Garnet Necklace

$350.00
This piece is unique on many levels. Most important is the stone. This specimen of Tiffany Stone (Opalized Bertrandite), is the best of the best, and it just can't be had anymore. I know. I've been looking for rough or cut stone of a similar grade, and there is simply none.

Don't believe me? Do a search on "Tiffany Stone" in Etsy, or ebay, or wherever you please, and see what comes up. You won't find any finer than this one set, and none loose that come even close.

Then there is the little tsavorite garnet. Perky, sparkley, and the rarest member of the garnet family. Quality tsavorite is hard to come by, and expensive when you do find it.

Then there is the setting. It's hand forged (that's silversmith talk for hammered) and formed (silversmith talk for bent), into a unique shape with sensuous contours which harmonize with the curves and colors of the gems.

Finally, there is the finish. Hours were spent attending to the fine details of sanding, polishing, and burnishing to produce a mirror finish, free of firescale and other flaws.

This is piece is absolutely one of a kind and not imitatable or reproducable. When it's gone, it's gone!

Classic Etruscan Gold Bracelet

$3,500.00
This classic design is known to date back as far as the 3rd century A.D. Only one ancient example is known to still exist, and is on display in the Britsh Museum. Only two links are present in that piece, woven in with other design elements.

This 8 inch bracelet is completely hand made. Each link was constructed from a ring of wire with the ends fused together, then hand formed over a dowel. The loops of each link were planished (hammered) into a pleasingly flat plane. Then the links were woven together.

The links are made of 22 Karat solid gold. The hook is made from 14 Karat gold. The lower karatage of the hook gives it extra strength.

The bracelet can be worn with either side showing. The 1st two pictures show the upper side, and the last picture the underside.

It weighs 1.24 Troy ounces. 22.1 dwt (34.4 grams) of 22K gold in the links, and 0.6 dwt (0.94 grams) of 14K gold in the hook. I had been offering this at a large discount, but no one snapped it up. In the meantime, Gold has gone through the roof, and I must adjust the price accordingly, bringing it into line with current offerings on amazon and other popular venues.

I am truly sorry you missed the window when you could have bought this for under $3000.

I can also make this design in Fine Silver with a Sterling Silver hook -- just ask!

The price includes USPS Express Mail delivery, fully insured, and signature required. Due to the high value of this item, it ships only to verified payment addresses within the United States.

Simple Hessonite Garnet Ring SRAJD

$95.00
Simple, simplicity -- sounds like "easy" and "quick" doesn't it? But in my life "simple" has rarely been easy or quick, and this is yet another case.

This was not a major project. It took only about 4 hours to complete. But when I recount the steps, I think to myself -- "where did all that time go?". The making of a simple band like this involves cutting and sizing the stock - in this case, cutting a 5mm strip from a sheet of 12ga silver I had previously prepared, and then cutting that strip to exactly the right length for the ring size desired.

The strip needs to be annealed - heated to just red hot - then quenched (quickly cooled in water) - to soften it before bending it into a rough "D" shape so the ends can be joined, making it into a loop. Of course, the ends never mate perfectly well the on the first go - so several saw cuts are made right where the ends meet, so that they evenually line up perfectly.

Once the ends are aligned and tight, they are brazed together with hard silver solder. Silver solder is an alloy of silver with just a little more copper in it than Sterling Silver, so that it melts just a little bit before Sterling would melt.

Then the "D" gets quenched again while it is still hot from soldering/brazing, then is hammered into a round ring shape by slipping it onto a ring mandrel, and hitting it with a nylon or rawhide hammer until it behaves.

While it was on the mandrel, I forged the back half of the ring (hit it with a cross peen hammer to widen and thin the back of the band.)

At this point, the bit of metal looks pretty beat up, with scraches and gouges from being hammered, heated, and handled with pliers and clenched in vises. So it gets filed inside and out until smooth. Then it gets sanded with 400 grit and then 1000 grit sandpapers, and finally polished with bobbing compound, followed by fabuluster.

So now I have a very pretty, perfectly polished band. Next the location of the stone is marked, and a dimple is center punched at exactly the right spot. A very small hole is drilled to act as a guide, then a hole about 85% the size of the stone is drilled out. Finally a special tool, called a "setting burr" is used to make a partial hole for the stone to set in.

From there it takes quite a while to move the top edges of the metal over the top edge of the stone. This literally gets done by pushing on the metal with steel tools. This, of course, creates more marks on the surface, which are smoothed out with abrasives after the stone is set. The top is re-bobbed and polished, and finally the ring is cleaned and ready for presentation (except for my fingerprints!)

Anyway - I present a simple, mirror polished band of silver, size 6 1/2 flush (or gypsy) set with an orange/yellow 3mm hessonite garnet.

The band has been forged just a little for comfort. At the point where the stone is set, it's 4.9mm wide and 1.9mm thick. 180 degrees around (at the back) it's 5.5mm wide and 1.5mm thick.

It's mirror polished inside and out. One of the attractive and annoying things about mirror polish is that is shows virtually everyting on it and around it. Please forgive my fingersmudge below the stone. The retake remedied that, but was flawed by lint and my own reflection.

This ring is made from Sterling silver and weighs 4.9 grams, including the garnet. The garnet is 3mm round brilliant cut. I'm afraid I neglected to weigh the garnet before setting, but a good estimate would be 14 points, based upon the weights of garnets of same size and similarly cut.

I can make this ring for you in a different size and/or with ruby, sapphire, amethyst, citrine ... instead of the hessonite. Just convo your requirements ..

Please feel completely free to ask any questions that may arise.

Regards,
Gary

Pharaoh's Necklace - Jewlery of the Day Featured item.

$875.00
This neckpiece is in the style and tradition of jewelry worn by ancient royalty.

The chain is made from over 1000 links, each hand made by fusing coils of Fine (.999) silver wire, and then individually shaping and weaving each link, in the same pattern as used by the ancient Etruscan artisans.

Because the chain is woven from individual links, rather than knit from a continuous piece of wire, it is incredibly supple and slinky. Very, very comfortable to wear.

The end caps on the chain are made from fused coils of Fine silver as well. Sterling silver is used for the end rings and the plates they sit on, for strength. The S hook findings are made from Sterling silver, with torch balled ends.

The chain is 18 inches from end cap to end cap, 19 inches if you include the rings and S hooks. The chain proper is 4.6mm in diameter, the end caps are 7.5mm at the widest points.

For those interested in fine details, the chain is constructed from hand pulled and hand fused 22 gauge fine silver wire links. The weave is known as 4-way or 2-way double loop-in-loop.

The centerpiece contains a cabochon of Painted Valley Jasper, from Brazil. Painted Valley Jasper belongs to a class of jaspers that are brecciated - that is, long, long, ago, the rock was partially formed, and then blasted apart by forces cosmic, and then re-settled again into a solid mass - over the course of centuries. This ancient process shows itself as flecks of different colors, each of irregular shape embedded in a matrix. Here the flecks are red, pink, and yellow.

The jasper is set in a hand cut Sterling Silver bezel brazed to a Sterling Silver back plate. The top of the back plate is textured and has a bezel set Green Topaz amid an ancient design motif.

This piece took approximately 70 hours to make, most of it devoted to the chain (which can be worn alone or with any pendant that can pass an 8mm round chain.

The offered price of $875 represents a better than 15% discount on the price of the chain alone - with the pendant as a free bonus!

This necklace was featured at JewelryOfTheDay.Net on Jan 17th 2009

This item ships free, fully insured.

The chain was sold to me as Sterling, but I don't believe it for a minute. I think it's silver plated copper - but it looks great, and is supple to wear.

I can vouch for all of the materials in the pendant. They are Sterling Silver, Fine Silver and Regency Rose agate.
The pendant measures 1 3/4" high by same wide.

This piece is one of a kind, as are most of my pendants. The color and texture in the stone can keep you facinated for hours is not years and months. The joyful energetic gestural character of the bail was serendipity. I spend a lot of time with hammers and fingers, forging and shaping bits of wire, and then playing with arrangements and constellations. I am very pleased with this gift from the muse. I hope you will enjoy it as well.

Ships to the lower 48 for $5 priority mail, $8 priority mail insured. Convo or email me for other destinations and carriers.

Dragon Skin Ring Size 6

$85.00
If pointy pieces present problems pour vous ...
probably prudent to proceed to another listing.

This size 6 ring, with Sterling Silver shank and stone setting, is constructed from a swatch of fold formed copper sheet. Some viewers have taken it to be leaf like, but I don't see it as such. The cross like ridges, and the texture left by vise and hammer, are more reminiscent of skin, rather than leaf.

I have test driven this piece for a day or so, on my little finger. The points have not presented any issues when putting on or taking off, as they sit a mm or two above the finger (that is, a properly sized - size 6 finger, no "no poke" guarantees if a size 8 or 9 finger is attempted!)

However, though the points are not sharp, they will definitely do damage to fine fabrics, children's skin, and pockets, if care is not taken to control your tips.

So, if you can deal with the dangers, this is a striking OOAK finger adornment, that your neighbor will not have in her jewelry box. I've already registered copyright on the design, as I've been asked for variations in gold and sterling within a week of creation.

This is the prototype, the original, set with a very pretty mystic quartz round. I carved the setting out of a length of 8ga sterling silver bar. I'm providing a lot of pics, just because I like it so much.

Point to point it's 1.7 inches.

:)

But none currently listed is as fine, fabulous, fantastic or just plain as big as this one - which is stunningly set in solid Sterling Silver with a spirited Mali Garnet accent stone.

This piece is not cheap, but, frankly, it could carry a much higher price tag. I have a dozen or so hours of work into this setting, in addition to the cost of the stones.

If you can recognize a bargain, you will snap this up.

The Sahara alone is 1 1/2 inches high and 2 inches wide. The pendant is 2 inches high from top of the bail to the bottom of the stone, and 2 3/4 inches wide from point to point. The back is stamped Sterling, and signed.

The copper is protected with Renaissance Wax to preserve the patina. The back is not laquered, but I will laquer prior to shipping if requested for people who have a sensitivity to copper.

Atop the ray I've set a very pretty Mystic Quartz round, in a Sterling Silver tube.
Shell with Diamond Pendant SRAJD

$95.00
Sterling Silver Pendant, sand cast from a shell I found on the beach, then finished and patinated - set with a 1 point single cut diamond. 2 1/4 inches high, 1 1/4 inches wide. 21 grams.

This is one of my favorite pieces. I like the flow of the curved bail through the shell.

The shell was cast using the same technique used by colonial silversmiths, before centrifugal and vacuum casting became dominant.

The shell was packed in molding sand, a special mixture of fine silica sand, bentonite clay (the same clay used in kitty litter!) and oil. It's literally buried, and then the sand is hammered around it. It's a two-part mold, so the shell is placed on a flat surface, a half frame is placed around it, and then the frame is filled with sand and pounded (but not so hard as to break the shell.). Then the filled half-frame is flipped over (with the shell still embedded), and the second half is placed on top. Some talc is sprinkled on the already packed sand and shell, so the sand about to be piled on will separate from the already packed sand easily -- you sort of have to "be there" to understand. But you can! I've prepared a tutorial on sand casting which is available free from my web site. Just "contact me" for the URL.

The remaining half of the frame is filled with sand and pounded/packed. The two halves of the frame are separated, and the shell is removed by sticking some clay to it's back, and then pulling it straight out, without disturbing it's impression.

Gate's are cut between the cavity that was formed when the sand was packed around the shell, to the top of the mold frame, forming a channel between the "spout" and the impression. Loose sand is blown out with compressed air, and then the two mold halves are put back together and clamped.

Next silver is melted in a crucible and poured into the mold. Very low-tech. When the metal cools, the mold is opened, and the casting is ready to be finished. The sprue needs to be sawn off, and the "sandy" texture left by the molding sand smoothed. The back is filed flat, then sanded and polished.

I fabricated some tubing just the right size for the small diamond, and drilled a hole in the casting that would provide a tight fit.

I wanted the bail to blend in with the sensuous curve of the shell, so I forged it against a round mandrel, and then brazed it and the tube setting onto the casting in one step.
There was a small challenge there, because the casting is much denser than the sheet and tubing that comprises the bail and stone setting. So a careful balance needed to be maintained to avoid melting down the less dense pieces.

I patinated this piece with Liver of Sulfur to tone down the bright surface of the casting and allow the small diamond to strut it's stuff.

I love the shape of this piece. I hope to make a similar one in gold sometime in the future. Not the same, but a piece sharing the wonderful curve of this shell. I need to save my pennies though to be able to purchase enough gold to execute that project.

It's a 2.5mm wide 14K Yellow gold (not plate, not filled, but real solid 14K Yellow gold) band, set with a 1.7mm white diamond, G in color, and SI1 in quality. The back of the shank is hammered, the diamond is flush set.

It makes a great little pinky ring, or an understated but elegant cocktail ring.

Stamped 14K and with my hallmark.

This ring is brand new, not recycled, not vintage. Due to the nature of the setting, it can not be re-sized, but I can make this ring in other sizes - convo me for details.

I do not ship gold outside the US, sorry.

Shipping is USPS Priority Mail with insurance and confirmation of delivery.

Prettiest Pink Grossular Garnet Dangle Earrings

$60.00
These sterling silver earrings have a sparkley surface texture and sport a pair of the prettiest pink grossular garnets you can imagine. Super feminine and vivacious.

The dangle is 2 1/2 inches from the top of the ear wires.

These dangles began as short pieces of 10 gauge round wire, that I tapered in some places, widened in others using hammers and steel surfaces to hammer on. The entire front surface was then textured using a fine diamond coated tool.

Finally, the seats were drilled and cut for the gems, and the two garnets were flush set.

Although garnets are considered a semi-precious gem, this particular pair is more valuable than typical jewelry store sapphires and rubies of the same size. They are very well cut and full of life.

The still pictures can't really show the dancing sparkle of the stones, or the shimmering surface of the settings. If you don't love them, you can return them within 7 days for a full refund INCLUDING SHIPPING BOTH WAYS. How's that for a risk free offer?
