Orange and yellow and red: put together, a recipe for fire! I love the firey orangeness of Padauk: such a vibrant natural color. A thin band of Osage Orange leads to a finial of Acrylic, white and black lines meandering through a deep red maze. The wonderful thing about this material is that it shimmers as you turn it in the light! (The second photo shows this effect a little, but it's much more striking in the hand!) Size P (11.5 mm), seven and one-half inches long. Heirloom quality.

Materials: Birdseye Maple, Yellowheart, "Desert Sunset" and "Cherrywood" Dyed Hardwoods

I began this hook with beautiful Birdseye Maple, which has lovely little birdseyes as well as some chatoyant figuring. I then added bands of "Cherrywood" Dyed Hardwood around a segment of Yellowheart before topping it off with a finial of colorful "Desert Sunset" Dyed Hardwood. I then wood-burnt three lines to accent the Yellowheart.

To me, this hook has an almost Southwestern feel to it: the colors, the shapes turned. I particularly like the way the chatoyant stripies dance in the light! A lovely, lovely hook! (It's so hard to capture the magic of seeing the hook in person in a photograph!) Size K+ (7 mm), eight and one-quarter inches long. Heirloom quality.

This is a sweet little vase, with gentle flowing curves, perfect in the creamy white of Aspen.

I hand turned this one-of-a-kind case from Black Palm. I love the natural colors and grain patterns that are revealed through working the wood. When cut, the striations in the grain of the wood look almost like confetti! I love the black-on-brown contrast of Palm -- it is difficult to work, but yields spectacular results!

Findings plated in 24k gold, this nifty holder is lined with nickel-plated brass, and will easily accommodate sewing, embroidery, or yarn needles, toothpicks, or even small beads. Personally, I use one of mine as a small pill box. Comes with an attachable keyring, or can be used as a necklace or on a chatelaine. This (like all of my other Art Tools) is one of a kind piece. Far beyond the green hills of earth, her blissful blue sky, and even her sun beyond is the deep dark blackness of space. Pitch, jet, endless darkness, but not at all lonely -- the stars wink here and there, huddled in nebulae, spinning in galaxies, conversing in their multitudinous tones, brilliant in their discourse. Deepest brown East Indian Rosewood combines with a band of near-black "Charcoal" Dyed Hardwood.

The finial is of "Galaxy" Inlace -- a wonderfully sparkly affair! The holographic sparkles appear as "white" dots in the photo, but they're actually more rainbowy in real life, winking red, green, blue, purple, orange, and yellow! A subtle and sublime hook indeed! Perfect for crocheting several strands of yarn together, or for making quick, thick, and fluffy afghans. Size N (10 mm), eight inches long. Heirloom quality.

Sunny Star -- Crocheted Star Pot Holder from Vintage 1930's pattern - (DAYSTAR) Katherine Kowalski Crochet

Recently I got a wild desire to do some crochet again, and while I almost never use a pattern -- this is one of my favorites. (It's kind of like a having a favorite cookie recipe that you look forward to making every year at Christmas). They take several hours to make, but are worth every minute!

The pattern is authentic vintage from the 1930's, and I find it to be the most useful (and fun!) potholder I've ever made. The holder is made of two layers to protect your fingers, and I like to crochet them in alternating colors. Far from being perfectly flat, this wonderful design is slightly rippled, and fits *beautifully* over knob-style pot lids. The second photo down shows this wonderful texture.

These radiant stars conform perfectly to the shape of your hand, and I find them especially useful to hold hot plates when eating gypsy-style, (i.e. on the couch or outside, without the luxury of a table to set the plate down upon). Their thickness also allows them be used as trivets.

These make wonderfully colorful gifts!

A walk down the street meets a chic and sassy lady with a chic and sassy canine. Poodle: curly. "Magnificent Curls," her ad should say. Brushed to perfection, fur glistening beautifully in the sunlight. Face dapper and dappled, a tiny beautymark on her nose. That curly poodle steals the glory from her lady, the most stylish of the pair!

These little fantasies come to mind when I think about how to describe my hooks -- it's like the crochet hooks themselves want to tell their own story! I began this hook with wonderful Curly Maple -- I absolutely adore the chatoyant stripies -- they dance so beautifully in the light! I then added a band of "Aqua" Dyed Hardwood before making a finial from "French Poodle"** Dyed Hardwood, which is one of my own custom colors. I began this hook with lovely Waterfall Bubinga -- which has a beautiful rich, reddish-brown color that flows with darker brown grain lines. In the middle of an art "bead," I added a band of bright red Bloodwood. The finial is an absolute treat! It's made from gorgeous Bethlehem Olivewood, which is certified from the Holy Land, and harvested during the annual pruning of the Olive trees.

The grain lines are extraordinary -- and I really mean it! Besides being extremely beautiful, they also resulted in a "heart" shape on the top roundel! Yes, this is the purely natural figuring of the wood! It was such a special surprise to see when I was turning! Size L (8 mm), just under eight inches long, and wonderfully smooth and silky! "French Poodle" Dyed Hardwood inspires a mood of sassiness, black and white photographs, and lovely conversations at Parisian cafés. I hand-turned this nosty from dyed and laminated hardwood that's been impregnated with resin and densified, thus made extremely strong and durable, and also resistant to temperature variations and moisture. I then inlaid gorgeous sky-blue crushed Kingman Turquoise gemstones into a wide band on the handle. Smooth as glass! Total length is just over eight and one-half inches. Heirloom quality.

Smooth as glass, your fingers will wind fast as the wind, making a handy center-pull ball which is perfect for knitting / crocheting, or plying yarn. This simple, yet immensely effective tool traces its origins back to Scandinavia; noste - ball of yarn, pinde - little stick, literally translated means "a little stick for winding balls of yarn." I find the nostepinde indispensable when I do my drop-spindling as they are portable and provide a gentle way to ball yarn without over-stretching. Instructions included.

Frothy flitting orange and purple, like a summer sorbet -- cool and smooth on a hot day. Polka dots, sundresses, leaves whispering in the gentle breeze, aestival days delight!

I began this hook with marvelously bright Osage Orange wood -- I love its rich, deep color, and the way it polishes up to a glass-like smoothness! I decided that it would look even lovelier with a little decoration, and hand-carved polka dots of different sizes all the way around the hook. I then painted them in various shades of purple, gold, and silver metallic acrylic.

This ornamentation does have a little texture to it, so I made sure to put it far enough to the top of the hook that it won't rub your hand whether you use the "knife" or "pencil" hold. This piece is engraved with my signature/artist's mark. Size I (5.5 mm), seven and seven-eighths inches long. Heirloom quality.

Recently I got a wild desire to do some crochet again, and while I almost never use a pattern -- this is one of my favorites. (It's kind of like a having a favorite cookie recipe that you look forward to making every year at Christmas). They take several hours to make, but are worth every minute!

The pattern is authentic vintage from the 1930's, and I find it to be the most useful (and fun!) potholder I've ever made. The holder is made of two layers to protect your fingers, and I like to crochet them in alternating colors. Far from being perfectly flat, this wonderful design is slightly rippled, and fits *beautifully* over knob-style pot lids. The third photo down shows this effect.

These radiant stars conform perfectly to the shape of your hand, and I find them especially useful to hold hot plates when eating gypsy-style, (i.e. on the couch or outside, without the luxury of a table to set the plate down upon). Their thickness also allows them be used as trivets.

These make wonderfully colorful gifts!

Materials: "Passion" Dyed Hardwood, Acrylic

A grove of flowers blooms in the garden of the gods: A green vine snakes over the ground, upon the stoney walls, over lattice and trellis, weaving its way between the slats. Buds emerge, turning their pointed heads to face the sun. And on that special day, flowers unfold, unfurl in the whispering breeze, open to reflect the golden sunlight on their petals...

I began this hook with gorgeous pink "Passion" Dyed Hardwood, turned three graduated beads before ending in a finial fit for a garden grove! I hand-carved five little flowers, (and a bud!), wrapping the design all around the hook, with a stray vine spiralling around the very tippety top. I then painted the this floral bouquet with metallic acrylics, using multiple golds and greens to create subtle shaded effects, which results in a wonderfully rich piece.

This ornamentation does have a little texture to it, so I made sure to put it far enough to the top of the hook that it won't rub your hand whether you use the "knife" or "pencil" hold. This piece is engraved with my signature/artist's mark.

With this nosty, I've combined the deep blacks of "Constellation"** Dyed Hardwood with the sassiness of "French Poodle"** Dyed Hardwood, adding a little lightness and, of course, a touch of PINK! I hand-turned this nosty from dyed and laminated hardwood that's been impregnated with resin and densified, thus made extremely strong and durable, and also resistant to temperature variations and moisture. Smooth as glass! Total length is just over eight and one-half inches. Heirloom quality.

Smooth as glass, your fingers will wind fast as the wind, making a handy center-pull ball which is perfect for knitting / crocheting, or plying yarn. This simple, yet immensely effective tool traces its origins back to Scandinavia; noste - ball of yarn, pinde - little stick, literally translated means "a little stick for winding balls of yarn." I find the nostepinde indispensable when I do my drop-spindling as they are portable and provide a gentle way to ball yarn without over-stretching. Instructions included.

You've seen me serve breakfast, now it's time for the main course! Get ready for an Italian pasta surprise! On the menu this evening is a beautiful portion of lightly browned Chechen, complete with fine black grain lines. In the center of the plate is "Spaghetti with Red Sauce" Inlace garnished carefully with bands of bright white Holly and Walnut. Yes, indeed -- those are real pieces of spaghetti (uncooked) positioned every which way in brilliant crimson Inlace Resin. The bits of spaghetti are very light cream color, and seem to be a bit camera shy (they don't want to show up well in the picture). Because they are of different hardness that the resin, they create tiny recessed areas which makes the hook have a very interesting tactile texture. Size K+ (7 mm), eight inches long. Heirloom quality.

I hand-made this Shawl Pin/Ring Closure from two pieces of beautifully matched wood: the turned pin is creamy white Pine, with a colorful accent of "Desert Sunset" Dyed Hardwood, and a matching paisley ring of Pine. The largest dimension of the ring is just over 4" across, and just over 2" high. The pin has a total length of 4 and one-half inches, with about 3" under the ornament.

Wonderfully smooth and lightweight, this closure will look lovely on *any* color of knitted or crochet shawl, and can also be used as an ornamental "brooch" on a loosely knitted or crocheted jacket.

I felt like putting together some of my most unusual natural materials for this hook, and began with Marblewood. Just like a marbled cake, this hook has wonderful chocolate-colored stripies meandering unpredictably through a vanilla-colored background. The graining of this wood gives it rich visual texture, but in the hand (and on the yarn), it is smooth as glass! I then added a little round "bead" of Pink Flame: this piece happens to be half pink, half cream, which you can see best in the first photo. The finial is the most exciting bit -- I chose Burmese Teak Burl, which is a rare and costly wood, and which has wonderful profusions of little "eyes" and swirling grain! It's fun just to sit and follow the patterns with your eyes, watching which way they wander, some of them all 'round the top! A glorious hook made from three exotic woods -- certainly a piece to treasure! Size O (11 mm), eight inches long. Heirloom quality.

I hand-carved this lovely oval-shaped barrette from one of my special custom colors. "Flying" Dyed Hardwood lets you take on wings and glide through warm currents, upward toward the mesas or mountains, over the deserts, grasslands, even forests, to finally arrive at a shining blue gem of a lake, hidden, far from any eyes but your own. I love the that the wood shows its character through a marvelously gorgeous "sun" shaped knot rising in the center of the barrette.

This dyed and laminated hardwood has been impregnated with resin and densified, thus made extremely strong and durable, and also resistant to temperature variations and moisture. Smooth as glass!

The barrette is backed by the highest quality "Made in France" metal clip, which is approximately three and three-quarter inches long. When I put these tiny blocks of hardwood together, they reminded me of ancient mosaics -- hundreds of thousands of tiny teserae (tiles) hammered into place one-by-one by numbers of skilled craftsman! In this little case, I used "Patriotic" Dyed Hardwood in colors of red, white, and blue. This nifty holder is lined with nickel-plated brass, and will easily accommodate sewing, embroidery, or yarn needles, toothpicks, or even small beads. Personally, I use one of mine as a small pill box. Comes with an attachable key ring, or can be used as a necklace or on a chatelaine. Top screws on for security. Total length is three and one-eighth inches. Heirloom quality.

I hand-turned this large focal bead from "Flying" Dyed Hardwood. This colorway lets you take on wings and glide through warm currents, upward toward the mesas or mountains, over the deserts, grasslands, even forests, to finally arrive at a shining blue gem of a lake, hidden, far from any eyes but your own. Just over three-quarters of an inch high, and 14 mm at the widest point. The photos show different sides of the same bead.

I hand turned this one-of-a-kind case from Red Palm. I love the natural colors and grain patterns that are revealed through working the wood. The striations in Red Palm are more subtle than in her cousin, Black Palm, but yet gives a wonderful visual texture to the piece.

Findings plated in 24k gold, this nifty holder is lined with nickel-plated brass, and will easily accommodate sewing, embroidery, or yarn needles, toothpicks, or even small beads. Personally, I use one of mine as a small pill box. Comes with an attachable keyring, or can be used as a necklace or on a chatelaine. This (like all of my other Art Tools) is one of a kind piece. I hand-turned this lovely vase from Colorado Aspen. Perfect for miniature bouquets of dried flowers or twigs, it's sure to brighten any room! The vase measures about 3 1/2" high, and 2 1/2" in diameter. This piece is signed on the bottom with my artist's mark, engraved along with the name of the wood.

There is some natural cracking on the side of this piece which occurred as the wood dried in log form. I love the natural coloration of the Aspen -- looks gorgeous!

Please note: this vase is NOT suitable for filling with water. As much as I would like to include the lovely flower arrangement of natural Wyoming grasses shown in the photos, I realized that I couldn't guarantee their safety in shipping, and so the vase is sold WITHOUT flowers.

I hand-turned this lovely vase from Mimosa. Perfect for miniature bouquets of dried flowers or twigs, it's sure to brighten any room! The vase measures about 4 1/2" high, and 2 3/4" in diameter. This piece is signed on the bottom with my artist's mark, engraved along with the name of the wood.

This piece has incredible natural grain, filled with wonderful variations of color and swirling patterns. The darker upside-down U-shape is a fantastic natural crack that adds sublime character to the vase.

Olivewood is one of my favorite woods -- beautiful chocolate-brown stripes shimmer over a creamy background. It has the most wonderful substantial feel to it, and polishes up to be as smooth as glass. I added two wood-burnt rings in the center to inspire a touch of elegance.

Radiant Star -- Crocheted Star Pot Holder from Vintage 1930's pattern - (DAYSTAR) Katherine Kowalski Crochet

Recently I got a wild desire to do some crochet again, and while I almost never use a pattern -- this is one of my favorites. (It's kind of like a having a favorite cookie recipe that you look forward to making every year at Christmas). They take several hours to make, but are worth every minute!

The pattern is authentic vintage from the 1930's, and I find it to be the most useful (and fun!) potholder I've ever made. The holder is made of two layers to protect your fingers, and I like to crochet them in alternating colors. Far from being perfectly flat, this wonderful design is slightly rippled, and fits *beautifully* over knob-style pot lids. The second photo down shows this wonderful texture.

These radiant stars conform perfectly to the shape of your hand, and I find them especially useful to hold hot plates when eating gypsy-style, (i.e. on the couch or outside, without the luxury of a table to set the plate down upon). Their thickness also allows them be used as trivets.

These make wonderfully colorful gifts!

Hand-crocheted by myself, Katherine Kowalski, Master Fiber Artist. 100% cotton yarn. Dimensions: approximately 8.5" from tip to tip. Professionally finished. My work is 100% guaranteed.

How I love November! Certainly an "orange" month, November has always been my favorite... the cool weather that starts to tip-toe in on gentle breezes, the leaves finally breaking forth from branches, scattering themselves over lawns and sidewalks and rooftops, coloring them all golden. November sees the last of the pumpkins, the wintry harvest, and is prelude to the snow months and end-of-the year celebrations.

I began this hook with lovely natural orange Padauk, rich in color, and has the most lovely aroma when cut. (Unfotunately this wonderful sweet scent goes away once the piece is finished). I then continued in this autumnal theme with a band of naturally-golden Yellowheart. The finial is made from Bocote, one of my favorite stripey woods. The inset photo shows the opposite side of the hook, and the intricacy of the grain line formations -- little circles and dots, tight lines meandering every which way! A lovely lovely hook! Size K+ (7 mm), seven and three-quarter inches long. Heirloom quality.

"Rainbow Bright" Dyed Hardwood is pure eye-candy! Everything springs to mind when I look at this colorway -- rainbows and leprechauns, flowers of every color imaginable carpeting gentle valleys, jelly beans and sweet treats, aurorae, and the myriad and variegated colors of life! A band of brilliant blue inlaid Chrysocolla gemstones encircles the case, further enlivening this gorgeous combination!

I hand-turned this needle case from one of my special custom colors of dyed and laminated hardwood that's been impregnated with resin and densified, thus made extremely strong and durable, and also resistant to temperature variations and moisture.

Findings plated in 24k Gold, this lovely holder is lined with nickel-plated brass, and will easily accommodate sewing, embroidery, or yarn needles, toothpicks, or even small beads. Personally, I use one of mine as a small pill box. Comes with an attachable keyring, or can be used as a necklace or on a chatelaine. This (like all of my other Art Tools) is one of a kind piece. Handy for grabbing the yarn through the spinning wheel orifice, this hook provides an elegant way to do so. In Cheyenne, the old train Depot has some of the lovliest architectural design -- all in Art Deco. This little hook reminds me of the wonderful radiant designs, and the magnificent lighting fixtures built into the building.

I began with one of my special custom colors, "Modern Retro" ** Dyed Hardwood, and cut several staccato-esque wave-forms before turning a long vase shape, upon which is "perched" a golden ball. This "ball of light" is created by hand-carving a textured design, then painting it with metall acrylics. I added several different colors of paint to create a subtle look, and bring vibrancy to the piece. Of course, this ornamentation does have a little texture to it, but it's well out of the way, on the end of the hook, so that it won't rub your hand whether you use the "knife" or "pencil" hold. This piece is signed with my artist's mark.

In tresses fair she wed her charming Prince. The years follow one and another, and again until hair grows gray and laughter is etched on her face. Love, far from fading, blooms brighter every time he looks in her eyes -- his bride, his treasure. Their love, more precious than diamonds.

I wanted to make a very special hook after my colleague suggested that I use precious gemstones in my work, specifically indicating diamonds. (Please see her incredible work at http://www.cindydrozda.com). What better wood to choose than glorious Tulipwood Rosewood -- beautiful cream with strawberry swirls of grain?

The design is one of my new series incorporating Unexpected Details -- see the tiny bead at the base of the finial? After turning a blissfully beautiful hook, (with a finial of exquisite proportions), I hand-carved swirling designs, working with the grain lines to better accentuate them, making a sort of golden filigree that embraces the hook in loveliness. I then painted these spiralings with metallic acrylics in golds, adding multiple layers of silvers and coppers as well for a more subtle effect.

The centerpiece of the hook is, of course, the gorgeous 0.10 ct Diamond, which I set in 14k Gold. There are no words to describe the gorgeous sparkliness of this brilliant-cut stone! (The picture doesn't even come close to doing it justice!)

Indeed, this ornamentation does have a little texture to it, so I made sure to put it far enough to the top of the hook that it won't rub your hand whether you use the "knife" or "pencil" hold. This goes for the diamond as well -- it won't even come close to touching your hand! This piece is engraved with my signature/artist's mark, and the entire hook is smooth as glass! Size 7 (4.5 mm), seven and three-quarter inches long. Heirloom quality.

Baroque thoughts came to me as I was making this hook out of one of my favorite woods: Cocobolo Rosewood, a true rosewood which has the most wonderful glass-like smoothness, and such incredible presence! After I hand-turned the hook, I carved swirling leaf & vine designs that meander all the way around the top of the finial. I then painted them with metallic acrylics in coppers and golds, adding multiple layers of color for a more subtle effect.

The jewel of the hook is, of course, the gorgeous 3mm Pink Tourmaline, which I set in 14k Gold. I love the way it sparkles and shines! I simply adore the intense pinkness in this brilliant-cut stone!

I hand-turned this laying tool from dyed and laminated hardwood that's been impregnated with resin and densified, thus made extremely strong and durable, and also resistant to temperature variations and moisture. "Magnum" Dyed Hardwood brings thoughts of autumn bake sales, falling leaves, and cooler days with her rich layers of light brown, pumpkin orange, navy, yellow, and burgundy.

This little beauty is from my Unexpected Details series -- did you catch the tiny little "bead" between the shaft and the finial? It reminds me of the gathering of a hair ribbon, tied prettily in the middle! I do so love working with Canarywood -- and this piece is from a larger board that I bought some time ago, which I chose because of its striking similarity to Tulipwood -- the creamy yellow background criss-crossed by perfect reddish-pink grain lines. This piece even has a lovely chatoyant stripe in the middle! Smooth as glass and a joy to work with! Size P (11.5 mm), seven inches long. Heirloom quality.
