Nichos are made from mixed media and traditionally combine elements from Roman Catholicism, mestizo spirituality, and other cultural items of significance to the owner such as skeletons, small photos and the like. Characteristically "nicho" have different names throughout the Latino culture, they may be called retablo or by other local names.
It is common to see decorative boxes called "nichos" set upon tables and pedestals to display icons. It can be used to house your calaveras or your special little pieces. The box door is blue and is adorned with polymer clay skulls. The shelves in the box are painted with acrylic paint and the back of each shelf is covered with handmade paper. The sides of the box are painted purple. Shelves vary in height and length. The back of the box has a hanger with which to hang it on the wall with your other Mexican favorites. It also latches on the side to keep your favorite items safe.

The measurements of this niche are as follows:
8" wide x 12" high x 1.5inches deep.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PURCHASING THIS PIECE AND LIVE OUTSIDE OF THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES, PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR SHIPPING PRICE.

Stiletto Love Affair....(Original Collage)

$35.00
The love affair between the female and her "high heels" or Stiletto dates back centuries. "Just how far will a woman go for the perfect pair of shoes? Shoes speak volumes about the wearer and have been symbols of sex, status and style throughout history. With the average North American woman owning at least 30 pairs!" states High Heel Confidential.

As per Wikipedia,"In 1533, the diminutive wife of the Duke of Orleans, Catherine de' Medici, commissioned a cobbler to fashion her a pair of heels, both for fashion, and to increase her stature. They were an adaptation of chopines (elevated wooden soles with both heel and toe raised not unlike modern platform shoes), but unlike chopines the heel was higher than the toe and the "platform" was made to bend in the middle with the foot.

High-heeled shoes quickly caught on with the fashion-conscious men and women of the French court, and spread to pockets of nobility in other countries. The term "well-heeled" became synonymous with opulent wealth. Both men and women continued wearing heels as a matter of noble fashion throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. When the French Revolution drew near, in the late 1700s, the practice of wearing heels fell into decline in France due to its associations with wealth and aristocracy. Throughout most of the 1800s, flat shoes and sandals were usual for both sexes, but the heel resurfaced in fashion during the late 1800s, almost exclusively among women."

Ahh the love affair between women and their high heels.

This is a format called a Paper Prayer. The Paper Prayer was created by Japanese artists mainly to evoke a sense of well-being and health to its viewer.

The 10inch x 4 inch paper is adorned with a design and mounted onto an 11x 14 inch matboard. (not shown as yet).
This piece is a mixture of colored pencil, gesso, archival ink, tracing paper (to give more depth).

Image ©2008 Brett Ward

$50.00
Dia de los Muertos = The Day of the Dead. This is a very special celebration that I learned about when I lived in Tucson,Arizona. It is my favorite festivity.

This is a celebration of the dead. An altar is erected, adorned with the following very colorful special items: skeleton (calavera) skulls made of sugar and decorated beautifully with colorful icing and/or beads (whatever you would like to use),marigolds as the dead's favorite flower, water for the dead to drink, pictures of the dead ones, special bread and pastries are made for the living and the dead to share. It is a wonderful expression of love and celebration of the dead one's life and appreciation/respect from the living. The celebration usually starts with a procession in the streets and winds up in a church or gathering place for the festivities. I was told the procession is to awaken the loved ones to celebrate with the living and gathers along the way, those who wish to participate. If you have never participated in this absolutely wonderful festival,I encourage you to do so.It is colorful and personal yet shared with all those who have lost someone close and/or meaningful to them.

This piece is done in the paper prayer format. The paper prayer was created by the Japanese to evoke health and well-being for the person for whom it was made.

This is a 10x4 piece of mi-tientes paper mounted on an 11x14 mat board. I use acid free, mostly hand-made paper.

This is my prayer for you for good health and well-being!

I WILL ship internationally.

Image ©2008 Brett Ward

My partner had her back to Jess and knew Jess was doing something she shouldn't have been doing. Without turning around, my partner said,"I saw that!" There was silence and a pause...then in a confused little voice Jess said, "How did you see that?" My partner said," Mom's have eyes in the back of their head." Jess responded with, "Nuh uhhhh..." So my partner went on to describe that mothers have long hair, to cover the eyes in the back of her head! Maybe a Betty Davis movie? Or maybe an Elizabeth Taylor?
When I was a kid and stayed home sick, my mother would put a sheet over the sofa in the living room and make a bed for me. She was better able to keep an eye on me if I was downstairs. Anyway, when she had the chance,we would watch old movies together.
One day, I was about 6, somehow the subject of sex came up on tv. I told her I knew what that was! She was flabbergasted and asked me what sex was!
Dancing Amongst the Trees..(Original Collage)

$30.00
I love trees. I grow Maple trees from seeds and give them as gifts throughout the spring and summer.

This is a Paper Prayer. The paper prayer was created by Japanese artists to evoke a sense of well-being and health in the viewer. The paper prayer is a standard 10inches x 4 inches and can be made out of anything.
This paper prayer was created using handmade paper, water colors, colored pencils.
My first introduction to the Paper Prayer was at an AIDS benefit in Tucson. Artists from Tucson made these small wonderful works of art and sold them for $10.00 each. All proceeds went to the AIDS service organization in Tucson.
I enjoyed them so much that I not only purchased a couple, I started making them myself. I added the mat board to make it stand out and is more easily framed in an 11inch x 14inch frame.
I hope that this piece brings with it a sense of peace and of well-being.

Image ©2008 Brett Ward
Namaste

Mudhead Kachinas drum, dance, play games with the audience, and may act as announcers for events. They often give prizes or rewards for the races and guessing games they organize. The term "mudhead" comes from their masks which have mud applied to them. Most of the time they accompany other Kachina, and may appear as a chorus. On First Mesa, and possibly other villages, their songs are in Zuni. During the rests in a dance, they may engage in games with the boys and girls in the audience. The Mudheads also enact by negative example what should not be done. His purpose is to encourage those he parodies to right their wrongs.

This piece is Native American inspired. I am not Native American, but have loved the culture and have been heavily influenced by my Native American friends. I lived in Tucson, Arizona for 27 years and the people of the Tohono O'odham, Hopi, Apache, Navajo have shaped my world in ways I would have never thought. I thank them for that with all of my heart.

This is an ACEO. An ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. The only requirement to be considered an ACEO is it's standard 2.5 inch x 3.5 inch size. This is an original piece of art. It is a colorful study of red orange branches and beads against a deep blue background. (Color may vary from monitor to monitor) The study was inspired by my love of the strange plants of the Sonora Desert in Tucson Arizona. I spent 27 years of my life there and it holds a prominent place in my heart.

This piece is an ACEO, but can be printed in larger format. An ACEO stands for “Art Cards, Editions and Originals” they are also known as ATC's or “Artist Trading Cards”. There is a growing group of accomplished artists creating ACEO's. These highly collectible, mini works of art are a standard 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Their small size makes them extremely affordable. These cards are sold as Originals or Editions that are prints of the original. Editions are numbered and signed, Originals are signed and all come with a certificate of authenticity.

Although this listing is for an ACEO, other sizes are available. Please contact me to let me know the size you desire BEFORE ordering so that a change in price and shipping can be made.

The piece will be printed expressly for you, as I do not keep these on hand. Please allow extra time for this as printing and delivery may take up to 1 week or more considering Holidays and such. If you are located out of the US, please allow more time for this process.

Characteristically "nicho" have different names throughout the Latino culture, they may be called retablo or by other local names. It is common to see decorative boxes called "nichos" set upon tables and pedestals to display icons. It can be used to house your calaveras or your special little pieces. The box door is purple and is adorned at the top with two polymer clay skulls, a framed picture of Frida Kahlo and two silver leaves. Along the sides are hand painted porcelain flowers and polymer clay leaves as well as the bottom. The shelves in the box are painted with acrylic paint and the back of each shelf is covered with handmade paper. The back of the box has a hanger with which to hang it on the wall with your other favorite items. It also latches on the side to keep your treasures safe.

It represents our capacity for vision, for collecting sensory information about our environment and the events unfolding within it. The Phoenix with its great beauty, creates intense excitement and deathless inspiration."
(The Feng Shui Handbook, Feng Shui Master Lam Kam Chuen)

"At the close of the first century, Clement of Rome became the first Christian to interpret the myth of the Phoenix as an allegory of the resurrection and of life after death, hence the burst into flames and its rising from the ashes to create anew. The Phoenix was also compared to the undying Rome, and it appears on the coinage of the late Roman Empire as a symbol of the Eternal City." - Wikipedia

This is an ACEO Original colored pencil drawing on 140lb. She lost herself, not at the hands of herself, but at the hands of others. She is about to lose her rights, can you help?

So many women have lost themselves as a result of a plethora of circumstances. Some have lost due to having children and leaving the workforce, some have left due to untimely disability and not being able to work anymore, some feel lost due to other situations like rape or childhood abuse. All in all, coping skills are gone and you just exist, not live. The color goes away, the sparkle in your eye is gone, you use a smirk to keep the tears at bay and keep how you really feel inside, deep inside.

This painting takes all of that into consideration and lays it on the table.

This is an original acrylic painting and conte crayon. It measures 20inches x 24 inches and is painted on gallery wrap canvas. There is no need for a frame as the style of the canvas allows for the painting to "wrap" around the sides.

**Layaway program available for this piece.

Image ©2008 Brett Ward

$15.00
The Koyemsi, or Mudhead Kachina, is a multi-faceted clown borrowed from the Zuni, but he’s seen in most Hopi ceremonies.

The theatre didn't purchase curtain tie backs because they had Speck.

This is a pallet knife painting. Just one swipe of the pallet knife for each color and then I look for the face. Once I am lead to the face I draw it in.The story comes after the face has been completed.

This is an ACEO Original acrylic painting on 140lb. Strathmore Cold Press Watercolor Paper. ACEO stands for “Art Cards, Editions and Originals” they are also known as ATC's or “Artist Trading Cards”.

There is a growing group of accomplished artists creating ACEO's. These highly collectible, mini works of art are a standard 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Their small size makes them extremely affordable. These cards are sold as Originals or Editions that are prints of the original. Editions are numbered and signed.Originals are signed and all come with a certificate of authenticity.

The story will be written on a separate piece of acid free paper and affixed to the back of the artwork.

Image ©2008 Brett Ward

It was part of my first solo show. It was modeled after a painting that Picasso did of a model lounging on a sofa. I decided that it was best suited for a desert scene and sofa was turned into a rock sofa.

This is an original acrylic painting. It measures
30inches x 40inches and is painted on gallery wrap canvas. There is no need for a frame as the border becomes the frame.

If you have a large blank wall, this is the place for it! On those cold winter nights, it would be a welcome reminder of the warm sun caressing your skin.

**Layaway available for this item.

Image ©2008 Brett Ward

$40.00
Hotei is one of the Shichi Fukujin, the seven Japanese Shinto-gods of luck. He is the god of happiness, laughter and the wisdom of contentment, and is the patron of the weak and children, fortunetellers and bartenders. Hotei is distinguished by his body of generous proportions and round stomach exposed beneath loose robes. His big belly is a symbol of happiness, luck and generosity.

In Chinese Buddhism he is known as Budai, the Loving or Friendly One. He was a wandering Chan Buddhist monk who lived in the ninth century. At his death between 901 and 903, he recited a poem that revealed to the world that he was in fact the Bodhisattva Maitreya in disguise. Maitreya, Chinese Buddhists believe, is the future Buddha, who will return to the world and bring innumerable individuals to salvation. This concept of hope for the suffering, combined with Budai's pleasing, human features, made him a most popular Buddhist deity. It was not until the sixteenth century that he was canonized as the sixteenth and last Chinese Bodhisattva.

This piece is in a "Paper Prayer" format. It is 10 x 4 and is mounted on an 11x14 mat board.
A "Paper Prayer" was created by Japanese artists to evoke health and well-being to those who viewed it.

Image ©2008 Brett Ward

Namaste
