I am no gardening expert, by a long shot. I kill houseplants with neglect, and my neighbors chuckle when they see me out trying to plant things in my yard (although I have to brag that I took some nearly dead perrenials I had planted in a metal planter box and just "speed-planted" them in a bed and they flourished there). Yet, I love flowers, greenery, gardens, and I appreciate all the hard work and creativity that goes into making them look so effortlessly beautiful. I love capturing them with my camera. When I took this image I gasped at the outcome. I get lost in this little view.

In addition to my offering this image as an incredible 18x24 inch print, I also present it as an 8x10 image, and I love it so much. It's printed as a glossy, borderless image by a third-party printer using archival quality paper (either Epson or Fujicolor).

I can mount this on foamcore board for an additional $12, or I can mat using Peterborough mat paper and a foamcore backing for an additional $20 (with some additional shipping charges, too, for either service). In Salt Lake City, behind an inconspicuous wooden fence is a treasure garden operating as a renovation/demolition supply store. The owner caught me photographing the sign on his storefront and invited me to see the rest of his place. It was fascinating -- old sinks, bathtubs, doors, window frames, broken appliances -- and I wandered around just shooting what I saw. He sent me home with a bagful of basil.......I still owe him a print or two of the images I shot.

Here's one. Available in an 8x12, I've printed it on archival quality glossy paper. If you prefer a matte finish, I can print one for you.

I can also matte this for you; just convo me to discuss and to work out the price. I think this one would look best with a 3" to 3.5" surround.

I took this image in the same treasure garden as "From the Heart 1". I had to pick my way through a bunch of old boards and metal bars to get to the pile of windows; the broken window was at the front. I love the pattern the shattered glass makes.

Whenever I set out on a deliberate "photo shoot" excursion, I often come home disappointed. I don't know what happens -- maybe I'm so caught up in the whole event that my eyes find a couch somewhere inside my head and just wait for me to finish.

This image was completely unplanned. I had a single peony in a tiny vase in my room, and even as it started to fade I hesitated to throw it away -- it was still so pretty. One afternoon the sun caught it just so. I gasped and got out my camera and captured this moment in what remained in this flower's life.

Printed as an 8x10 glossy print on Fujicolor Crystal Archival Paper Supreme, it's a lasting photograph, and with proper care it can last more than two lifetimes.

I can print other sizes. This particular image will work well printed in larger and smaller sizes, including 5x5 square. Just send me a message, and we can discuss what you want.

so, i'm at the farmer's market in carrboro, north carolina, earlier this afternoon, and i see this perfect display of little pint-size baskets of okra. unfortunately, i'm not very tall to capture the without the help of a ladder, so i adjust a few settings on my camera and with a little trust in my higher power, i held the camera above my head and pressed the shutter. voila! i will be hanging this in my kitchen.

Near Ayuthaya, Thailand, June 2006. Hot, humid, and hushed. But the buddahs were dressed in celebration of the King of Thailand's 60th anniversary of his reign. He has ruled longer than any other in the world. Thank you, ThaiDreams! It was actually very wonderful to be lucky enough to be in Thailand at this time. The entire country was buzzing with excitement and pride.

this image is part of my new "across america" series. taken in a diner in dubois, pennsylvania, on a cold and snowy day, i really just wanted to curl up in this booth with a bottomless cup of tea and a book and forget about the outdoors for awhile. but we had a destination, so we didn't stay long.

this black and white image is 11x14 inches and looks good printed in a lustre finish. i can also print this larger, for instance in 16x20 or 18x24 inches, but i don't suggest printing it smaller than 11x14. i only use archival, acid-free photo papers and matting is suggested. i can also frame your image for you. just let me know what you are thinking, and we can work out a price. i always believe the simpler the better, especially with photography.

On a cool Saturday morning at the Salt Lake City farmer's market recently. The vendors can make art out of vegetables and fruits, that's for sure. On that particular day, I bought an entire case of really ripe tomatoes and cooked them all up to make thick and lovely tomato sauce. These fruits will live forever on:

it's always winter somewhere. it can be formidable and something to endure, or winter can be something to celebrate and embrace.....while your coat embraces you...

in winter where i live, it's often windy. so when everything was able to freeze on the tips of the branches and stay for a little while i was captivated. for this shot, i ran outside in my pj's. fortunately i was wearing slippers.

Has Been and Will Become 8x10

What is it about benches that intrigue me so much? They add a nurturing emotion to any environment you find them? They are (sometimes) a great equalizer? I don't know what it really is, and I find myself attracted to them wherever I go. This bench is sitting in a small field in Yountville, California. It faces a neatly planted vegetable garden, which at the very end of January holds the promise of spring. After I tromped around in the garden, sinking in the mud and trying not to step on the tiny plants, I found out this garden belongs to none other than The French Laundry, one of the most famous restaurants in Napa and possibly the entire country!

I have printed this image in my home studio on 8.5" x 11" Canon Pro paper in a gloss finish. The photograph is 8" x 10" leaving a small border to allow for matting. Canon paper is archival quality (I wouldn't use anything else).

I can mat this print for you with Crescent archival Rag archival in a nice white with a three-inch suround for an additional $15. Shipping costs are a bit more for sending a matted print, so just send me a message and we can discuss. Framing is also available. I believe in the KISS method of framing, and I prefer to use a very simple 1-3/4" black wood frame in a soft, matte finish, with conservation quality glass. Please let me know what you'd like to do.

Golden Towers at Ayuthuya 8x10

It was hot and very quiet. There were Buddhist prayer sessions going on and there were a few people with cameras. Ayuthuya, Thailand, in June, 2006. It's only about an hour or so outside of Bangkok, and it's like another world.

This image is offered as a lustre-finish, 8x10-inch print, on archival quality photographic paper. I utilize a third-party printer and inspect the print before I send it to you to make sure all the colors are as vivid as they were the day I saw them.

Custom matting is available for an additional $20, using Peterboro matboard, and it's also archival. The backing is acid-free foamcore. I use a 3-inch surround, which sets off the print beautifully. There is additional shipping for this service, so please send me a message so we can talk about it. I love to frame, too, and my framing prices are very reasonable and high-quality. In the middle of a high desert meadow is a spring. This oasis has a small pond which serves as a home for a few water birds and a single willow tree where someone built a fort years ago in the branches. This ladder stands year after year allowing access to the sagging plywood platform. I hike past this place often and I always feel like a kid around treehouses. How does it make you feel?

This black & white print is offered in an intimate 5" x 7" size on lustre paper. I use a fantastic third party lab for my work, and they only use archival quality papers that are beautiful to handle and look at.

Union Station, Washington DC, USA.
Do yourself and the highways a favor and take the train. No, it's not Europe-class trains, but they are a joy to take rather than braving the traffic of the highways or the horror and degradation of the airports, particularly on the US East Coast. I took the train recently from Washington DC to New York City, and it was wonderful (no security lines, and I got to keep my shoes on and didn't have to use a *#*D ziploc bag to hold my potentially-dangerous lip balm).

This image is available in an 8x12-inch print. I use a third-party lab for this photograph. The paper, as always in my shop, is archival.

I'd suggest a rag mat with a hefty surround, perhaps as much as 3 inches all around to let this image really stand out. This will look great in your office or your living area.

I've been rain-starved for the past few years, living in Utah. On a recent visit to Vancouver, BC, Canada, one of the best things I experienced was the misty rain adding a dimension of texture and color to everything in the city.

This image is available in an 8x12 inch glossy or matte borderless print on professional archival-quality photo paper. It will look amazing matted, and I am using Peterborough matboard these days. There's a white with a pebbly texture I'm loving, and this print would also look fantastic with a white mat with a black inner core. The upcharge for custom matting with a 3 or 3.5-inch surround is $20. The difference in using a custom-cut mat is incredible for presentation of photography. Pre-cut mats available from the craft supply stores just don't have enough heft to give artwork the presentation it deserves.

My tombstone will be inscribed "Champagne Was Her Weakness", and it's true. I took this image in May, 2007, at an incredible champagne/caviar bar in the Ferry Pier Building in San Francisco. You can order flights of champagne to taste or you can get it by the glass or the bottle. It was one of the most festive afternoons I spent this year!

To celebrate, I am offering this print in 8x12, borderless, with a glossy finish. I have not played around with mats, and while I can offer standard white matting for an additional $15, I suspect this print might look fantastic matted in something a little less stark, maybe even a champagne-y ivory shade. Simple black framing would complete the look. The print is done on Fujicolor Crystal Archival Paper Supreme, and with proper care can last 100 years or longer -- just like great bubbly!

The sugars in these cabernet sauvignon grapes are just about perfect, and they're just about ready to be harvested. The life of a winemaker involves a lot of decision-making along with dealing with elements way beyond anyone's control. I photographed this beautiful cluster at a vineyard in the Napa Valley of California after talking for some time with the winemaker and the vineyard manager. The more I learn about wine and winemaking, the more I realize how little I know about it.

I'm offering this image as a glossy, 8x10-inch print. The blueness and greenness just pop out at you. Hang this one in your tasting room, your cellar, your kitchen, wherever you enjoy a beautiful glass of living, breathing wine. At least I think these are lotus flowers....I saw these in Bangkok early one summer morning. I wish I could replicate this somehow in my own garden, don't you? It is so peaceful and yet vibrant with pink energy.

somehow, taking this photo a couple of weeks ago at the height of the fall colors in my town gave me hope. there are times when just picking up the camera gets hard; it's heavy to hold, and my mind just can't compose a picture. then you turn a corner and it's there -- something to see. i'd been feeling sad and this image turned me around.

These columns and doors have layer upon layer of paint. If anyone paints over these coats too many more time, the detail will likely be gone. Nevertheless, the afternoon sun captured the richness of the black and all the colors it contains. Something that's walked by every day with hardly any notice becomes a beautiful thing.

The Other Side of the Mountain 8x10

On Conn Valley Road, outside St. Helena, California, in the Napa Valley, I spotted this derelict barn. Conn Valley Road is a bit off the well-known tourist pathways of Rte. 29 and the Silverado Trail, and the road first goes over Howell Mountain and winds and twists its way past ranches, a few established wineries, and lots of huge trees. Did you notice the love message on the side of the barn? I didn't see it until it was right in front of my face -- but it was raining pretty hard that day and I was trying to protect my camera.

This 8"x10" image is printed on 8.5" x 11" Crane Art Museo Silver Rag paper. I am loving this paper so much. It's got a great feel and the finish is soft and fantastic. Try it, you'll love it!

This photo was taken in Ayuthaya, Thailand, in June 2006. Imagine my surprise to see a buddha with a tree growing around it. The body is under the ground intertwined with the tree's root system.

cars today lack personality and soul. when i saw this old impala it brought a flood of memories back to me, from my teenage years (the car was old then, too), and i remember how much of a factor drama was in my life then. i invited drama and needed it to be validated. thank goodness that's changed, or i'd be permanently exhausted. this old impala lives on in central nebraska, facing the interstate, and wishing for a little drama to return to its life, too.

Photo taken at Cathedral Nacional in Panama City, Panama, April, 2007.

This church was across the street from the apartment I stayed at in Panama City. The traffic in and out of this cathedral all day long was heavier than most Wal-Marts in the US! It was a place to go before work for mass, at lunchtime, in the evening after a hectic day, and weddings were very special -- many included fireworks displays instead of rice-throwing. I fell in love with this church and the rituals.

I love New York City. I've been lucky enough to have visited some of the world's major cities, but NY is my favorite of all. There's an energy here that just doesn't seem to exist anywhere else.

Here's my digital image manipulation of a photo I took from Central Park near 59th Street in February, 2008. Printed on 8x12 glossy paper, with proper care it can last a very long time for you. Just about all matting materials these days is of archival quality, and keeping the image away from touching the protective glass (conservation glass) and hanging your artwork out of direct light will allow you pass it down to a future generation.

Just around a curve in Conn Valley Road near Napa Valley, California, we spotted this lovely shed, covered in moss. It seemed as if it wanted to become part of the tree. The rain fell and filtered through the branches. The ground was soft and damp beneath my feet, and I felt myself exhale. All was quiet that late January day. This is one of those views I will remember for the rest of my life, and I will call upon it when I need calm.

I printed this image in 8"x10" format on Crane Art Museo Silver Rag paper. The colors are vivid yet the finish is soft. The paper itself is 8.5" x 11", so there's a small border around the photograph to make it easy to mat or frame. Matting is available for an additional $15 and for additional shipping charges. Why did the statue and public artists of old love to use naked cherubs with bare feet in much of their works? I would love to know the significance. I don't see much contemporary public art that feature such things. On a chilly, early spring day in New York City at Grand Army Plaza, I spied these cold little chubby feet and brought their image home with me.

No lie, I opened this image in Photoshop thinking I would play around with it a bit. I couldn't. I couldn't enhance or fade this photo in any way to improve it. The colors you will get in this photograph are as made by nature, shot in natural daylight at the Saturday Farmer's Market in Carrboro, North Carolina.

Springtime comes slowly to northern Utah in fits and starts. The sight of vivid greens and tiny purple wildflowers makes my eyes ache a little bit from the prettiness.

I found a little grove of flowers along a fast-running stream in the Salt Lake valley and lay down in the grass to get this shot. Good thing, because it's snowing today...

This image is presented as an 11x14 lustre print on archival quality photo paper. I use a third party printer for most of my printing.

Custom matting (by me) is also available. An archival quality mat from Peterborough matboard and an archival foamcore backing is $20. The overall size will be 17x20 inches. I can frame this in a beautiful complementary custom wood frame (1-3/4 inches approximately) for an additional $60.

Although I don't own one, I love old trucks. The way the metal loses its shine and dulls to a softer color, the way the chrome pits in an interesting way, the shape of the body....I could go on an on. I saw this truck parked in Oakville, California, on a sunny and perfect February afternoon.

This print is offered in a 5x5" (12.5 cm) square format, that shows off the detail of the truck. There is a second print available, called "old truck 2", which is also shown here. An abstract look at something familiar. This image means many things to me and it incorporates some of my favorite elements -- the texture of wood, the curve of design, something well worn, the thing we see over and over again and mostly pay no attention.

This photograph is available in an 8x12 glossy, borderless print, made on Fujicolor Crystal Archive Paper Supreme. With proper care and the use of conservation glass, this image can last a long, long time. I have also pulled an 8x10 print on my studio printer using Crane Museo Silver Rag 100% cotton archival, fine art paper. This image is 8x10 printed on 8.5" x 11" paper, leaving a small border on all sides.

I can print this image in an 11x14 format, and I do not recommend anything smaller than 8x10, because it would have to be cropped too much.

Matting is available. Please send me a message to talk about what you'd like to do. I recommend either setting this photograph in a simple, white rag mat or framing with no matting whatsoever in a very simple dark frame. I also think this would look great sandwiched between two panes of glass and framed in that manner. Let me know what you'd like, and I'll advise the extra charges.

The Napa Valley of California is a magical place. In January comes the rain. Grape growers are always busy working their land, pruning the vines, planting early spring vegetables, and taking time to enjoy the beauty that surrounds them. I took this image at Revana Vineyards, just north of St. Helena. It was raining lightly and steadily, and even though the grapevines are dormant right now, there is growth everywhere and you can smell the water, earth and promise of great things to come.

This image is available in an 8x10-inch print. Printed on 8.5" x 11" archival quality paper in my own studio, I have a variety of papers to give either a gloss finish or a super lustre glow.

I fell in love with the city of Louisville, Kentucky. Great people, great art, music, theater, food, architecture, and interesting neighborhoods. It's not midwestern, it's not southern, it's not eastern. It's kind of a mixed breed, like me. Come and see for yourself.

This 8x10 image is of a Victorian fountain found on St. James Court in Old Louisville. It was placed there in the late 1890's and recast in bronze in the 1970's. In this image, it is a very cold morning and the water is partially frozen. My fingers were cold, too.

I think anyone from Chicago will instantly recognize this photograph. I was there last June and kept seeing this all over the heart of the city. Some very clever hooligans were shenanigan-izing with newspaper boxes and making adaptations that I found to be kind of funny. I hope some of you see the humor in this. Personally, I think this would make a very excellent way to point someone in the direction of your restroom (or washroom, as they like to call it in ChicagoLand).

I printed this image with my third-party photo printer on archival quality photo paper with a glossy finish to really make the red stand out. There's a great little champagne and caviar bar in the Ferry Pier Building in San Francisco. One cool afternoon in May, we splurged and spent an afternoon tasting flights of champagne and savoring some exotic caviars. I took this photo just for fun. In Panama's Gamboa area near the Panama Canal is a place called the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. They have a magical orchid garden there. I fell in love with the plants there, and patiently waited for the breeze to subside to capture this image.

Somewhere in downtown Chicago, just off the Miracle Mile. Maybe you've seen this; maybe not. It's fun to find peaceful pockets in the midst of busy city life.

While this offering is for a 5x7-inch glossy print, this particular image will look terrific in a larger format -- 8x10-inch, 11x14-inch, maybe bigger. It took me awhile to list this photograph, and I guess I was just waiting for the right moment. Casco Viejo Door 5x7

In the old section of Panama City, Panama, it's referred to as Casco Viejo, "old city". It consists of narrow streets, 2-3 story buildings from the late 19th and early 20th century that went derelict as the city pushed out and away from the old part of town. It is being gentrified and buildings are being gutted and renovated and turned into shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. There is still plenty of poverty and rundown property there, and I captured this building on a hot afternoon. A well-dressed beggar approached me and told me in simple Spanish that his house had burned down and he needed money to buy school uniforms for his children. Sucker that I am, I gave him a donation. But I did get this image, and I'm pleased.

Available in a 5x7 luster print on archival quality photo paper, it's ready to drop into a standard mat or straight into a frame of your choice. I have mats available for an additional $10; just let me know if you'd like this.

you have to keep your mind open and your options fluid. sometimes, when you least expect it, you have an amazing day that is comprised of tiny little occurrences that are life-changing. this describes the day i had today, january 28, 2009, and this is the day i took this photograph.

this image was taken at the international buddhist society temple in vancouver, british columbia, canada, on a sunny midwinter afternoon on the day after a snowfall. the sunshine through the tall evergreen trees made the wet pavement steam in the sunlight. my coat still smells of incense. it was a magical afternoon in many ways.

this image will look best in an 11x14 glossy format. it will be printed on archival quality paper. i can dry-mount this photograph onto foamcore board for an additional $12 (and an additional $9 in shipping costs), or it can be matted with a 3-inch surround archival matboard (making the entire piece 17x20 inches).

If you look at old photographs from the days the Panama Canal was under construction, this is the part of the city from which they were taken. I spent two months in Panama in Spring 2007, and fell thoroughly in love with this part of town. It's being gentrified and buildings are being gutted and renovated and turned into shops, restaurants and nightclubs. Some of the buildings still house squatter families who have been there for generations, stealing power from the overhead lines, and living there openly until they are paid by developers to move elsewhere. It's an unusual system. There is still plenty of poverty and rundown property in Casco Viejo, and many parts of it are very dangerous after dark.

This photo is printed by me in my home studio on 8.5 x 11 Crane Museo Silver Rag paper. Designed exclusively for inkjet printers, this paper is archival quality, 100% cotton, and the print has a gloss finish. The finish is not as "slick" as commercial printers' glossy finishes will produce, and I love its soft lusterous quality. I am having lots of fun with this paper, and this image in particular looks

A freshly painted wall on the streets of Manhattan is just too lovely to resist. This may be graffiti to some, but to me the grandiose curves of this quick spray job were a joy to see. Note: The artwork on this wall in the West Village is long gone. It was painted over and what's there now is much inferior art to what I captured in October, 2007. Oh well.

Fall 2008, Park City, Utah, at Glenwood Cemetery. Life was pretty difficult when this town was a silver-mining town. It was life-threatening work, and the winters were hard and long. The history in this little cemetery makes you realize how people truly sacrificed to try to make a living here. Some did very well, while others struggled. If you are ever in town try to come to this quiet cemetery and walk around and pay tribute to those who came before us.

The Salt Lake City Farmer's Market is an annual summer-long event. It takes place in Pioneer Park, and it's one of our best places to get fresh everything. It's a great way to spend a Saturday morning, especially if you get there early. The colors of the fruits and vegetables available in late summer in Utah are spectacular, and it's our best time for them, because our winters are so long.

This 8x10 image is full color and printed on Canon Pro Paper in my home studio. I use 8.5" x 11" paper, so there is a small border. The finish is a high-gloss and this brings out the colors in this image.

I can mat this for you if you'd like, and framing is always available. I keep Crescent rag mats in stock in a simple white color with a 3" surround, and I keep a really nice soft black wood moulding around. It's 1-3/4" wide, and it creates a very nice simple frame that allows the photograph to be the star, while providing a dramatic surround that lets the entire piece command attention on your wall. This image is available in an 8x10 matte-finish, borderless print. My lab uses Fujicolor Crystal Archival Paper Supreme, and I use Crane Art Museo Paper. Both papers are archival. With proper matting, framing and use of conservation glass this print could last up to and beyond 100 years.

I can print any size you'd like. Just send me a message. This particular print will also look great as a 5x7 print.

a third in my "american road" series. somewhere off the interstate in nebraska. i've gotta tell you that nebraska is very beautiful. it takes a long time to drive across the state, but its quiet beauty is there for those who want to find it.

this is printed in an 8x10 glossy format by a high-quality third party printer on archival quality photo paper. this image would look wonderful matted, and i have some great matting materials to offer you. i am really enjoying peterboro mats, and i always use a hefty surround. it makes a huge difference in the presentation of an image. standard mats you find at the mass-market stores cannot truly showcase an image as a custom-cut mat can. it's a subtle difference in the amount of mat space surrounding the image. but i digress here. just send me a message if you are interested. the price for matting is $20 and that includes a foamcore backing. shipping is a bit extra, too, since i use "flakjacket" brand shipping envelopes and they are costly, but they guarantee that your print will arrive in pristine condition.

This image looks great as 12x18. Bring summer into your life for the whole year on archival quality paper. I have this printed by a third party printing company while I'm spending the summer on the road, and I inspect each print before I package it for shipping.

Shot in Park City, Utah, on the Summer Solstice, 2008, in a normally nondescript location (weird for a place that's known for it's very vivid and descriptive locations). I had to hurry to get this one because my cat was loose in the back of my car, and I was blocking traffic. But I did it, and now it can be yours!
