welcome to the halfsquatch series. don't know what a halfsquatch is? well, it's a 104-part online foto-serial novel at www.halfsquatch.com.

but halfsquatch is much more than the (somewhat twisted) story of a teenage goth girl in the canadian north who discovers her family history is more than just a little out of the ordinary. no, halfsquatch is more than words — it's all about the art, too.

for the series, i created 104 collages specifically to be photographed with my holga cfn and expired agfa rsx-II 200 slide film that was then cross-processed. the result is a surreal altered art experience. the collages include magazine and brochure clips from the 1940s to the present day and the cross-processing and age of the slide film adds a distinct grain to the photographs which, much like many of the story's themes, blur the line between fantasy and reality, truth and myth.

select images from the series are available. each image measures 5"x5" and is artfully placed 1-1/2" from each of the sides of a 8"x10", and 1-1/4" from the top, much like the layout of a 600/779 polaroid (if such polaroids were 8x10", that is). and the size makes framing a snap.

all images are professionally printed on kodak supra endura archival paper with a glossy finish (lustre finish is also available upon request).

“unicorn” was shot in late january, 2009. i shot slides of a miniature stallion (which at the right angle, looks like a unicorn in silhouette) in ambient indoor light — hence the bright orange background. then i projected the slide and photographed that with my holga — and voila! the unicorn.

this is one of those very canadian icons that we all recognize: the hudson's bay blanket coat. now, i know they're making reproductions these days, but this is the true-blue, stripey vintage '60s deal. it's one of my favourite pieces, especially since i spent about 15 years looking for one in really good condition, so i'll admit i cringed a bit as i stuffed it with dead, overgrown plants and weeds for this shot.

“crinoline” is one in a new, ongoing series of photographs, "the catalogue of collected style," which showcases various vintage items i've picked up over the years.

this, i think, is my favourite shot in the series of far. i wrapped my vintage '50s red crinoline around a random and unusually tall twig/plant, aimed my camera at the sky and waited for the wind to pick up. it was not a particularly windy day, with only spurts of a breeze now and then, which resulted once again in the neighbours gawking and likely thinking i'm insane, sitting out on the lawn with a red crinoline wrapped around a twig waiting for wind. the result, however, was worth the wait, regardless of what the neighbours think.

“bingo balls” was shot in summer 2007 in black diamond, alberta, canada. a semi-drunken man had taken over the old general store spot for the summer and was holding a never-ending garage sale that i trekked out of town to visit several times. i have no idea where the guy was getting this stuff, but it was always packed with awesome (and inexpensively priced) stuff.

on my second trip out last july, i spotted this vintage bingo ball mixer (i'm not sure what it's called; i'm sure it has a name). it looked cool, it was cheap, i was tempted, the semi-drunk guy was pulling his best sales pitch. but, in a show of uncharacteristic will, i passed on the sale and just photographed it instead, which ultimately took up a lot less space in my home.

this dress is a recent find. and it's everything about '80s fashion that was both so very wrong and so strangely right for the times. it's bright, it's big (well, the ruffles are), it's bejeweled, it's taffeta. in other words, it's perfect, and somehow tossed onto the ground in a concrete parking lot only makes it better.
