A receptor is a large protein that translates a signal into an effect inside a cell. When scientists discover a receptor but don't know what signal it recognizes, they classify it as an orphan receptor.

I happened to "discover" a bunch of orphan beads - beautiful beads that just didn't have a place of their own. So I grouped them together and made an orphan bead bracelet - will you be the one to decipher the signal?

Some of the beads included: a unakite round, lampwork glass beads, glass pearls, pewter beads and bead caps and Czech (and other) glass beads in various shapes. I strung all these orphan beads onto beading wire and finished the bracelet off with a simple lobster clasp. This bracelet is almost 8" long.

This showstopper is completely one of a kind, and an original design by me!

The focal point is a beautiful blueberry quartz pendant, about 1.5" x 1.25" and faceted on both sides. This stone is absolutely stunning, but hard to photograph. If you tilt it the right way, you can see right through it in some spots, and the layering of the blue within the clear quartz is striking!

This pendant is strung on thin silver wire along with 3, asymmetrically placed, jet (solid black) Czech glass 8mm rounds. This chain is 16" long. The next layer of chain uses a chain with larger links and is 35" long. Sprinkled throughout this chain are more jet rounds and blueberry quartz 8x10mm flat rectangles. The necklace is finished with a pewter toggle clasp having two loops.

Soar CROSS STITCH original blue bird wall art for MSOE team May Ornithology challenge

This is my submission for the Mad Scientists of Etsy (MSOE) team May challenge: ornithology.

Cross-stitching is an old love of mine - so when I wanted to challenge myself this month for our.. well, challenge, I decided to design my own original cross-stitch wall art. The bird design I based off a sketch I made a while back - and I basically just free-handed the whole thing from there.

I hand-stitched a soaring bird in dark blue embroidery thread, and filled in the sky with lines of light blue. A looping, cursive "soar" is embroidered in bright yellow floss. The cross-stitch is on white Aida cloth and framed in a 4" wooden hoop (the entire piece is around 4.25" wide). The back of the piece is covered with a sweet turquoise bird patterned fabric.

This stunning necklace cannot be found anywhere else but here! It is wonderfully unique, featuring sparkling gems and a dangling leaf charm at the back.

This necklace is made with 6 12mm faceted green-gray fire-polished Czech glass and 1 12mm faceted tortoise Czech glass beads. These are strung together on silver wire and completed with fine silver chain. The necklace is finished off with a simple lobster clasp and a 1" extender featuring a dangle on the end. The dangle consists of a pewter leaf charm and a light orange fire-polished Czech pressed glass flower bead. The necklace is 20" (excluding the 1" extender).

Call Me Business NECKLACE with handmade and handpainted recycled paper mache beads in brown tan gold turquoise red strung on turquoise ribbon

This is my first ever necklace made with recycled paper beads! Bright, bold and beautiful!

I handmade these beads with the business section of an old phonebook. They are paper mache (hard to the touch) and painted with different shades of brown, turquoise, red and gold. The beads were then given a coat of sealer and strung on a thin (3mm) turquoise ribbon with knots between each bead.

I used a vintage button and a knotted loop for a makeshift toggle clasp. As you can see in the picture, the ends of ribbon are pretty long ~ these are so the necklace can be resized, and will be trimmed once you let me know the length you'd prefer. Right now it's about 20" long. The button is mother of pearl and is knotted with a bow onto the ribbon.

CARING FOR YOUR NECKLACE:

The sealer will protect the beads from some moisture (like if you're caught in the rain) but they really shouldn't be soaked in water. If they do get a bit wet, just dry them off right away and they should be fine. Being paper mache, they are pretty resilient, I've dropped a few of the beads and they were fine. But I don't think they would stand up to being stepped on.

This necklace has a secret ingredient: luck. I've infused it full just for you. When ever you're feeling nervous, just rub the stone with your thumb for good luck!

This is a statement piece. The pendant features a large 35x25mm oval focal bead of mauve-gray moukaite jasper. While this stone isn't technically a worry stone (or thumb stone, which has an indent that fits your thumb), it is the perfect size for rubbing with your thumb. Dangling in front of this is a pewter angel or bird wing, around 30mm long. The pendant hangs from a 22" silver chain, finished off with a simple lobster clasp.

This lot is for a SET of a matching necklace and bracelet. I used 5 different kinds of beads, and each one catches the light beautifully!! The pictures really don't do these justice!

The beads used are: light blue glass seed beads, green glass tube beads (catch the light with a blue tinge), silvertone metal round spacer beads, 6 mm hand-painted (but not by me) gilded green with pink flowers round beads, and 12 mm clear blue faceted plastic beads. They are beaded onto stretchy clear cord. The bracelet has no clasp and is about 7.5" (19 cm) long. The necklace has a silvertone screw-type clasp, so it is really easy to take on and off. It is around 18" long.

All of these plastic buttons have ridges on them making for great detail, and a few are vintage. In the middle is a royal blue button (vintage), flanked by black buttons, then grey-blue buttons (vintage), two clear blue ones and finally two more of the same black buttons. The dangle is through one of the holes of the black buttons beside the clasp. The dangles are: purplish-black gemstone chips; silver metal beads flanking a multi tube bead (looks like gas in water); and a round royal blue bead flanked by blue glass seed beads. The dangle can be removed at your request, but I like it as it keeps the clasp on the bottom of the wrist. The bracelet is about 7.5" long.

Each jump ring has been soldered shut. However, accidents do happen, and I am willing to make reasonable repairs for free.

Carnelian is a semi-precious gemstone with a gorgeous deep orange-red colour. Carnelian is actually a variety of chalcedony, which was surprising to me since chalcedony is a beautiful glowing soft green. However, carnelian is coloured by iron oxide impurities (which makes sense - iron in your blood is what makes it look red!).

Another cool fact about carnelian: the Egyptian goddess Isis protected the dead with a carnelian amulet called Thet. And so carnelian is known for it's protective, as well as it's energizing, properties.

This pendant necklace features a gorgeous 25mm carved carnelian turtle - you can even see his eyes & shell pattern.
