Pen-and-ink drawing of white Pacific sea bird, a Snowy Egret, once a victim to the hat plumage industry, now suffering from a shrinking habitat. Archival print signed and dated by the artist. Inspired during my 2007 seashell series.

I see more and more of these tall white birds with their orange feet and bright orange beak bases at the lagoon, now that the road through it has been officially closed for some time now. These birds see you coming and hold very still ... then take off running, spreading their impressive wings to coast just above the scrub brush to another marshy area at a safer distance.

Picture this: I'm at the beach during a winter month -- but it's southern CA, so it's barely sweater weather. Hardly anyone around, and I have an intense need to draw these little scurrying birds who run toward the water as the tide recedes and poke their beaks into the sand for sand crabs. When the swell returns, they run toward me with my little point-and-shoot, and I'm sure they think, "E-gad!" because they jolt left and high-tail it faster than you can imagine down the beach. I'm left with a bunch of blurry photos of birds and a couple bystanders laughing at the crazy bird lady. Anyway, this tiny bird stood still for me. Something yummy in that tangle of seaweed.

It's a hot and washed-out blue day. My friends are snorkeling the reef on the other side of Anegada -- the reef inspired his wing pattern. I've just returned from kayaking the island, and I'm lounging on deck of our small rented sailboat with a sandwich. This little noisy bird landed on the blue-covered BBQ and waited. The blue of the cover reflected on his white belly -- just like the turquoise of the Caribbean ocean reflected on the underbelly of the clouds on the way in. He didn't get lunch, but he did have his portrait done.

I once knew a California game warden who, during the off-season, busted night poachers of abalone, a rare creature in the wild ocean. During the on-season, he would free-dive for his quota of one abalone per day per person. This one he brought to our house to feast upon. To show my gratitude (to the abalone and our friend), I display this seashell in my garden, and drew its intricate details for you.

I spotted this noisy black bird -- called a great-tailed grackle -- on the bank of Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas, while I slipped by quietly in a rented kayak. The community says he's sound pollution, but I found his long-legged assertive self regal. A proud representation of Texas.
