Lockness art yarn handspun lincoln wool locks hand dyed in burgundy

Multi colored hand dyed lincoln locks are taken one bunch at a time and tailspun onto a fine hand dyed mohair yarn. It is super bulky and super slow to spin. Lots of coaxing it through the wheel and onto the bobbin. Kind of like jamming a sheep a bit at a time through a 1 inch hole. Not the relaxing zen like experience I get spinning most other yarns. However there is a definite sense of accomplishment.

This yarn can also be ordered by the yard for $4.50 per yard. Just convo me so I can put up a reserved listing for you. I can see this added as trim for mittens or a hat. Needlefelters and rug hookers have used this as an embellishment also. Lots of potential with a little imagination. I however just like looking at it and occasionally walking around the house wearing the skein around my neck....

Hard to describe this yarn in any other way than to say it will make you think SHEEP. (without the smell) I had a man at an art fair drape the skein around his neck thinking it was a finished scarf. Just goes to show you that whatever you make from this, it will stand out! I picture it used as incredible trim for hats and mittens. But there is enough yardage to knit a unique scarf or weave an incredible boa. Mostly I'm just happy looking at it and thinking SHEEP!

Thunderstorm II Handspun Art Yarn

I spun this grey and white mill end roving with natural black alpaca and merino symbolizing thunderhead clouds with touches of a funky green that reminds me of the color of a stormy sky, right before you should be grabbing the cat and heading to your basement. Interspersed with locks of snowy white lincoln wool; cause in Wisconsin in April, you just don't know when that rain will turn to snow. And plied with a strand of commercial bamboo thread. The colors of this handspun yarn were inspired by the April storms theme of my etsyFAST team (Fiber arts street team).
All in all a beautifully elegant yarn to incorporate in a special project.

Some yarns have a history, and since this yarns' is stranger than most,I thought I would share it with you.
It started on a beautiful fall day, while demonstrating spinning at a local art fair, I was playing with one of my drum carded batts of blended fiber. Mohair, wool and alpaca in lovely shades of cream, browns, rust, black and just enough bursts of red to keep it interesting. Without a real "funky yarn" plan for this I just spun in my favorite relaxing, don't have to think about it, zen like, "it will be what it will" be style.
I spun this yarn, truly loved it, admired it, procrastinated about putting a price to it; and basically just moved it from here to there, in the shop and at home to appreciate it in different settings. Then life took a chaotic turn and most things fiber took a back seat.
It was probably a few months before I got back to putting regular hours into working at the studio. And I got to thinking about where that skein of yarn had gotten to. I couldn't find it at home or at the studio and just put it down to one of the many things I seem to misplace that I figure will turn up eventually.
Then while working at the studio on a Saturday morning, a lady walked in holding my yarn in front of her. Aha, there it is. I thought maybe she had bought it, while I wasn't there, and needed it wound into a ball or some such thing. It turns out that she had rescued it from the middle of the street, in front of the shop and had held onto it for months until she happened to be driving by on one of the few Saturdays that I had the open sign out. The label looked a little the worse for wear (run over actually) but the yarn seems to have survived it's little adventure away from the studio just fine. With a little wash and just a little more placing it here and there, I am finally ready to put it up for sale. Not all of my yarns lead such interesting lives. Then again who knows what they do after they leave my hands.
