Redwork style embroidery was very popular from about 1880 to 1920. Embroidery patterns were stitched in red thread that was popular at the time, because it was made of a new dye that was colorfast and would not run or "bleed" into fabric when washed.

Handkerchief Doll - Church Doll - Plantation Doll

These Handkerchief/Church/Plantation Dolls are replicas of dolls made during the American Revolutionary War. Because church services were long, mothers made these "church dolls" out of handkerchiefs to help occupy their children. Sometimes a sugar cube or sweet was placed in the head portion for a young child to suck on. Since the dolls were soft, they wouldn't make noise if they were dropped during the church service.

This doll is made from all new materials including a new handkerchief. The bonnet is handmade and removeable. The bottom of the dress is trimmed in matching lace. Doll is approx. nine inches tall. It is intended for decorative purposes only. It would be a nice touch as a topper on a baby shower gift instead of a bow.

Do you know of this tradition? This is a handkerchief that has been made into a bonnet. You present this bonnet to the mother-to-be at the baby shower or at the hospital when she has given birth. The new baby wears the bonnet home from the hospital, then it is carefully packed away. On the child's wedding day, the bonnet is unpacked and a thread at the back is "snipped". The bonnet becomes a handkerchief again. This handkerchief becomes the "something old" to carry down the aisle.

I have started with a new quality lace handkerchief and have hand embroidered a swag of pink and blue flowers with green leaves along the front edge. The embroidery pattern is based on a vintage design.

This bonnet comes to you packaged in a beautiful gift box, inside it is wrapped cornflower blue tissue paper and includes the following poem:

A tiny square of Linen

This bib is soooo very soft and absorbent. I think this would be nice if you have a "spitter upper" (I had two!) or to put on your little one when teething to catch drool.

It is made from 100% cotton and is composed of two soft layers. The embroidery design is based on a vintage pattern and has been stitched completely by hand.

I liked this bib so much that I ordered ten more from the company to stitch on! Watch my shop for more designs coming soon. I like the fact that there is no Velcro to get snagged on other things in the wash, and no snaps to pull out or get defective after awhile.

I have to grin when I see this because it reminds me of when I was a child. My older brother (by two years) would always get me on the see-saw at the park. I don't know why, but back in the late 1970's they built things a bit differently and not a safe as today. It was on concrete, so when you came down you hit hard. He was much bigger than I was and always waited until I was way up in the air and then jumped off so I would come crashing down! Oh the joys of having a big brother. He would always be laughing his head off as I would be rubbing my bottom. : )

I hope my sweet little kittens are a bit nicer, but I do think there is a bit of a stinky little grin in the boy's smile. I think this pillowcase would brighten up any child's room and would even make a great gift to bring a sick child in a hospital.

Pennsylvania Dutch Inspired Hand Embroidered Pot Holder / Hot Pad

I love all things Dutch and Pennsylvania Dutch. I have been wanting to stitch this pattern for a long time and finally got around to doing it! This reminds me of all those pretty hope chests that were painted with these lovely designs so long ago. I have made this into a pot holder that is completely functional, as well as beautiful. It comes complete with a loop at the top for hanging. The center of the pot holder contains several layers of quality cotton quilters batting. It's just the right thickness and machine washable,(I have prewashed it after stitching it). The back is done in a great matching red calico fabric with tiny blue and white flowers. The top layer is "tacked" neatly down to the bottom layer to prevent bunching and twisting when washing.
