Daughter of Diancecht, master physician of the Tuatha De Dannan, Airmid was a great healer and herbalist. She tended all the herbs of the world and they informed her of all their secrets. The new moon was already rising as she hurried away from the office. Having to stay late for the third time that week, most likely without anything extra forthcoming in her pay envelope, was rather disheartening. Crossing rapidly to the High Street to pick up fixings for dinner, she gazed up at the sky and did a double take. The crescent moon glimmered a shimmering pink! The green grocer’s and the bakery were closing, but she quickly made her purchases and began to head back down the street. Suddenly, twinkling lights at the very end of the block caught her eye. A new store? It certainly was not there yesterday. By now all of High Street was shuttered, but the lights were on in that one shop. “May as well have a look,” she thought. The lilting sound of a harp could be heard as she approached the unusual looking establishment. The sign and the door were well-weathered, remnants of at least two centuries ago. She peered into the display window, astonished by the whimsical array of lavishly adorned hats…

In honor of Edgar Allan Poe’s 200th birthday. One of America’s best-loved authors and poets, Edgar Allan Poe was the master of the horror story, detective fiction and psychological thriller. Poe has been one of my all time favorites since childhood and I’ve posed him with a raven to commemorate one of my favorite poems, The Raven.
I based my painting on various portraits I have seen including the modern one by Michael Deas, which appears on a 2009 United States stamp, the William Pratt daguerreotype taken in 1849 and the 1860s Oscar Haling portrait.

This is an Open Edition Archival Quality ACEO created from my Original 2.5”x3.5” Pen and Ink/Watercolour/Acrylic on Bristol.
