This ferocious dragon playing with a pearl is one of nine from the ancient Nine Dragon Screen in Beijing. This enormous glazed tile wall was built in 1756. The entire wall is 27 meters long and 5 meters high. It is one of China's great cultural treasures.

This is a familiar scene in Beijing. Gorgeous red walls like this one line many streets in old Beijing and along the center of the city. We photographed this wall in late afternoon on a crisp autumn day.

Bicycle in Chinese is "zixingche", and as my Mandarin teacher translates, it means literally "self movement vehicle". I think the word sounds so much like a bicycle bell: onomatopoeia!

We shot this red paper New Year wish in an old farmhouse courtyard in Yangjiabu, China. Red paper calligraphy is pasted on doorways and walls during the lunar New Year Festival. "Couplets", which are two line poems, are pasted on either side of a door or gate. Here, the single character on the red diamond is the word for good luck, abundance. Many doors also have New Year woodcuts of red faced warriors on horseback, Door Gods which protect the household.

I love the square symmetry of this shot, and the spare gray coloring punctuated by bright red and black.

There's a special garden in your memory. By day, it buzzes warm and bright. By night, its palette turns midnight green and white, twining up trellises, and filling the air with sweet perfume.

Honeysuckle Wreath is my memory of moonflowers, jasmine and honeysuckle, fragrant in the night garden. Using digital techniques, I combined a dozen high resolution photographs to make this finely detailed and richly colored image.

The giant ginkgo tree outside my window turns brilliant yellow in the fall, dropping its leaves into my yard. Teachers from the elementary school around the corner occasionally bring children to collect the unique fan shaped leaves. The ginkgo dates back millions of years and is considered a living fossil.

I combined photographs of ginkgo leaves, rice paper, Japanese pawlonia and dragonfly patterns to make this montage. It is inspired by traditional Asian scrolls.
