Highway One crawls up the California coast
just west of common sense
a pencil line along the unstable soil, erasable.
Slides bury the lanes, and the road bed crumbles
under pressure of pounding seas and trembling earth.

Orange Caltrans trucks
and heavy equipment
appear, repair, and disappear.

Rains rreturn. Earth Shifts.
The surf eats another mouthful
of the ephemeral thread.

What act of faith keeps us moving dorward,
when any moment
the road beneath us may slip away?

The narrow road winds like a daydream
through the shifting fog.
Around every bend lies a promise:

The light may break upon redwoods
and emerald ferns or on high golden grass.
Below, a tumbled mass of rocks marches
into a cerulean sea.

Moonlight Sail collage

In glorious black-and-white a sail boat sails in a tropical bay. Foliage shows in the foreground. Islands mark a pathway out into the open sea. A full moon hangs in a drk sky where a few wisps of cloud float. Shapes are of torn paper except for a few carefully cut pieces. Pigeon Point Lighthouse is recreated in a combination of tissue paper collage and watercolor paint. The red roofs make the lighthouse and its collection of out buildings especially pleasing to the eye. The rocky coast, the white-capped Pacific Ocean, and much of the lighthouse are created from painted tissue paper collage. The misty sky and the other buildings are painted directly on the watercolor paper surface. In spite of the dark skies, the over all look is bright and inviting. The painting is 11.5 inches by 15 inches, and is being sold without mat or frame. It could be used with a commericially produced mat with an 11" by 14" opening, commonly used with 16" by 20" frames.

Watercolor and Prismacolor markers combine to create this still life. My lovely 90+ year old neighbor picked this basket of persimmons and brought them over to me, saying she was sure I would like to paint them. While she owns one of my paintings, she is no longer collecting art--she just thought I would get pleasure from depicting them, and I did. The original painting is 7" by 9" on watercolor paper. 5" by 7" reproduction comes matted for 8' by 10" frame. Reproduction is in Epson durabrite inks on Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte paper which, framed under glass and not exposed to direct sunlight (don't do this with yur watercolor originals either) should give your a century of more of service.

This botanical ACEO depicts a lily on one side with a rose motif on the reverse. Media used include collaging, ink drawing, and watercolor. Most of the organic botanical matter was originally embedded in the purchased handmade paper. which is glued over a pre-cut 2.5 inch by 3.5 inch ACEO card. The drawings make use of the botanical material and extend the theme. Watercolor paints create a background to better define the lily and provide coloration for the rose and hearts.

From October to March we have sandhill cranes in my area. My favorite place to view them is the Consumnes River Preserve, and there is magic in viewing them or simply hearing their cries on foggy, wet midwinter days. A lemon, pear, and glass of wine are painted in watercolor on Yupo. This synthetic surface absorbs very little of the paint so colors really stand out. The yellows and purples compliment each other. They are further intensified by the mat colors. I have "floated" the image on the mauve back mat even though the edges are somewhat irregular for an informal look that I feel suits this casual still life. It would look especially great in an area used for dining or entertaining. The painting itself is about 4 inches by 6 inches. The burgundy mat is 8 inches by 10 inches.

Delta Doodle

A black ink line wanders around the page creating a scene which could represent ay number of river deltas. Lush forest lines the water. Reeds and grasses have rooted on sandbars. A rickety pier provides a place for fishing shack and waterfront storage. A small red boat is tied to the pier. The sky is scattered with summer's cumulus clouds. The waters are slow and murky. Colored pencil finishes the work, predominately green, brown, and blue, with just that touch of red in the boat. The drawing measures 5" by 9". It s presented in an 8" by 12" mat, but at this price you are not so heavily invested that you could not have it re-matted and framed larger if you prefer.

Covered Bridge Acrylic Painting

Over a two day period I painted this covered bridge in acrylics. It is a plien air painting--painted outdoors on site. The bridge is at Felton, California, and is reputed to the the tallest existing wooden covered bridge. The trees beside the stream are in bright fall foliage, and the water in the stream is low. It is easy to imagine a 19th century carriage pulled by fine horses approaching the bridge. The painting is 8" by 10" on canvas painted around the sides so that it needs no frame. The back is wired and ready to hang.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse is depicted in oils on stretched canvas. Dimensions are 9" by 12" or 22.8cm by 30.5cm. For those of you unfamiliar with the area, Pigeon Point is located on the California Coast between San Francisco and Monterrey. Like so many lighthouses, it carries the name of a sailing ship that crashed on off shore rocks before the lighthouse was installed. This painting was done in my studio from sketches and photos done on site.

Reminiscent of the fauve colorists of France a century ago, the "wild" painters at the tail end of the French Impressionist era, color here is brilliant and refuses to follow expected lines. It's a card. It's an original work of art. The square painting of a coffee mug and fresh picked tomatoes is watercolor on yupo. If you are not familiar with yupo, it is an articifial paper which is not very absorbent. Collors appear very bright on its surface. Layered beneath for a collage effect are interesting papers. The card is 5" b 7" and can be mailed or framed. It you do send it to someone, it will quite likely wind up in a frame at their end.

This ACEO of the snowy peak of Mount Lassen, site of northern California's last volcanic eruption in 1912, is a watercolor measuring 2.5" by 3.5" (6.5 cm by 9 cm). It reverses to reveal an ink drawing of an eagle perched on a dead branch, overlooking pines, and the mountain in the distance. The Lassen area is real fire and ice wonder, often snowed in in winter but very much alive volcanically with hot springs, mud pots, steamy air. Eagles and other wildlife abound.

I can this small painting "Rosy" because it was inspired by a pink dolphin recently seen off the coast of Florida. The dolphin is believed to be a rare albino, perhaps getting its color from capillaries showing through the skin or perhaps reddened by the sun. The dolphin, like the one I've painted, appeared to be healthy.

Along with Rosy are colorful jelly fish. The ocean is in watercolor, the living creatures are painted with metallic watercolors, and the creatures are drawn in archival ink. The scene is "framed" in silver marker.

Measurements are standard for ACEOs, 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches.
