it's icy and cold outside my window right now, and i can't stop staring at this board. a very fine, hand painted, corral original. a piece of functional art. (www.freshlowtech.com).

the board is 48" x 9" and the painting covers the whole of the deck bottom.

we moved to portland, oregon from albuquerque, new mexico in the early 1990's -- just a bit before diy fashion started to surface -- and i was enchanted with nordstrom. i got a job at the art school and over my lunch breaks would crawl the sales racks looking for treats and whatnot. one of the first few items i bought with my very own fancypants art school paycheck was a tiny pink patent leather purse in the prettiest shade of pink i could imagine. and a mint-ish sage green angora sweater. such style.

so i wore them and wore them and wore them until finally one day, they could be worn no more. then i wore them well beyond that day -- finally admitting that they should be refashioned into something else all together.

and so were born the joaquin and beatrice little plushies. stuffed with fill from new, unused (mostly easter basket extras) stuffed animals from a grandparent or aunt or other well intentioned friend. combination of sewing machined and hand stitched by me -- hand embroidered skulls and hearts. they're roughly both 7 inches by 4 inches (widest point...)

individually, they're $40. the lovebird pair together is $70. let me know if you're interested and i'll list them as a set. these are not meant as toys and will not hold up to rough play, but more for the adult collector. an occasional hug, tho, is good for all involved.

there's not much left to say -- shortly after we took this photo, the thaw started. so i'll leave it up to you to say who won the match.

snowbrero:
short(ish) version of a long story:
my sweetie was born and raised in el paso, tx. we met in albuquerque, nm and lived there for a while. then we moved to portland, or and lived there for a really long while. then we had a baby and i wanted to move closer to my parents, so we moved to maine. neither of us had ever lived in maine but thought it can't be that different than the places we've been before.
it's pretty different.
my sister's husband gave us a crazy old snowblower for a housewarming gift. two days after we signed on the dotted line and took over the hogfarm, there was a major blizzard. and our pipes froze. and some other horrible stuff happened. feeling like he couldn't be any farther from his chicano roots, and to try and stop my continuous sobbing, gil put on our sombrero and figured out how to run the snowblower.

i dried my tears, took a few photos and our very favorite holiday image ever was born.

calaveras beatriz y joaquin. they're very much in love. this listing is for joaquin only.

he's made from a upcycled skirt, with pink leather for his face and heart. he's stuffed with a t-shirt meticulously chopped up into little squares. his body is machine sewn, his skull and heart are hand embroidered, and he stands about 15 inches tall.

he is not for little tykes or rough play. he'd really like to stand and look flamenco regal with beatriz.
