Kiwi Flowers

This wall hanging has a traditional pieced background with 3 pink flowers appliqued on top. The center of each flowers is a print of a slice of kiwi. The flower stems are made of yarn that has been attached to the quilt by “couching” and yarn is also couched on the quilt’s border. This quilted wall-hanging comes with a rod and will hang on a single nail.

The second and third views show close-ups and the fourth view is the back. This quilt was part of an on-line challenge. The challenge was to use the fabric that is shown in the last view.

Instead of using shapes and colors to make a pattern, a watercolor quilt blends small floral squares by arranging the darker and lighter fabrics in different places. The darker fabrics represent the mountains with the lighter fabrics being the evening sky as it becomes pink. This is a "Fabric Mosaic". Little pieces of purple and black fabrics are secured to a backing fabric and a netting is placed over the top then it is quilted. The netting provides the "sparkle" you see in the photo. The black wood frame is included.

This is an original watercolor painting of the Dairy Barn in Athens, Ohio, it is in matted and framed with the quilt square that is in the painting. There is some tradition in the midwest to paint quilt squares on barns, although the real Dairy Barn has a different emblem where I put the quilt square.
