An original handbound book featuring a unique mixed media cover. This book was constructed using traditional book binding methods yet infused with an experimental, abstract cover.

The compass portion of this book refers to the orientation of the metal "paddles" as those used in kayaking. The smooth shimmering rock is attached using a woven waxed thread and then sealed within the inside front cover. The metal kayak paddles are wound together using wire and also wrapped with thread to the stone.

This is a well constructed piece designed to wear with age. It is not completely flat however, so be careful when throwing this book into your bag!

A fiber experimentasia. Burning tea haus flames set the stage for a firey new artist book. Redefined as a blank book for 2009, enjoy this new bookwright offering! There will be more artist books to come. Typically an artist book fuses mixed media in a book arts form. I'd like to stick with my instinct and keep these books blank for your enjoyment.

This book features a hand knit cover with 12 individual signatures stitched directly to the spine with sturdy, waxed linen thread. The inside covers feature tea-infused paper with an embellished pigment house. The inside cover-page features handmade paper dyed with natural pigments. Three quarters through the blank book is a stitched paper element composed of hand-beaten, raw fibers that have been sun dried and then carefully curled with a bone folder.

The paper included in this book was created in the studio of the late papermaker, Richard Lee and as part of the Haystack Mountain School of Arts&Crafts open door session in 2007. All materials reflect a reverence for natural elements and celebrate the fiber arts collective in Maine! We are truly endowed with an incredible group of artists in this state.

This one of a kind journal is constructed entirely of scrap leather and extra pages from my other bookmaking projects. I've tried to incorporate a few more leather journals into my work for fun as well as to challenge my bookbinding skills.

This journal is inspired by simple repeating geometric patterns that I see in African textiles and drawings. The book is held together by waxed linen thread that is bound to the leather and wraps around the outside wooden button closure. It has a smooth, supple feel and is the perfect size for your pocket!

The design pattern has been scratched onto the surface of the leather and will likely change color over time as the book wears.

In addition to high quality pages that have been individually designed and printed with archival materials, the covers of this book are made from handmade past papers! Using pigments and an archival NORI paste (made from seaweed) these papers are one of a kind. Each batch of paste paper was enough for one book, so every calendar book will be signed and numbered for this year's edition!

If you are a hand papermaker, this is a great way to incorporate subtle color into a vat of recycled pulp or fiber base. It works very well with cotton linters added for more volume. Please tear into smaller pieces first, soak for 2 hours prior to usage and blend well with adequate water prior to pulping.

This is truly a one of a kind book. It was my dream to use handmade paper for the covers of all my handmade books. The reality is that this is a very time consuming endeavor. While it didn't happen much, I was able to make some beautiful batches of handmade paper and the remnants were used to cover books.

This listing is for one of my original blank books constructed about 4 years ago with handmade paper. The pulp was a blend of cotton linters and recycled (acid-free) paper combined with milkweed seeds, fine shimmering hairs and other plant fibers. The result is a beautiful, textured but soft and durable paper that I've used to cover archival binders board. Handmade paper is a wonderful medium which I would encourage others to try!

The inside of this book is filled with a heavyweight, textured sketch paper that lends itself well to pencil, charcoal, pastel or ink drawings. All of the books that I make are bound using a wrapped reinforced stitch that is durable and allows the pages to lay flat.

This is the only book of it's kind.
