I began making lids on my mugs because I hated how my coffee would get cold while I worked. A lidded mug, particularly one made of stoneware which naturally retains heat, was my solution. The lid can also be used as a saucer to hold your spoon, teabag, even a couple of cookies. The mug is microwave and dishwasher safe. It was thrown on the wheel in white stoneware and glazed in green and turquoise. The handle is impressed with an abstract design. The cup holds about 1 1/2 cup of your favorite brew.

This is a set of two green bowls. The smaller one will hold 2 cups of your favorite food, the larger one will hold 3 cups. They were made on the wheel from red stoneware and glazed in rutile green, with a subtle abstract design in a darker green. I folded over the rims while the clay was soft. This gives the bowls a nice substantial rim without adding lots of weight to the bowls.

STRENGTH and HUMILITY CUP - West African Series 5

This vessel is handcarved with the West African symbol DWENNIMMEN which means literally "ram’s horns." It symbolizes humility combined with strength. It is said that
the ram will fight fiercely against an adversary, but it also submits humbly to slaughter, emphasizing that even the strong need to be humble.

The cup was made on the wheel with white stoneware, then carved when the clay was leatherhard. The symbol was outlined in coral and then the piece was dipped in a clear glaze. It holds 12 ounces (360 ml). It could be used for any number of things (cup, vase, container). Whatever it is used for, it stands as a gentle reminder of some of the finer human qualities.

This is the fifth in a series of handthrown cups/vases carved with West African symbols. The symbols were chosen because they resonated with me personally.

As every foodie knows, it's hard to measure a pinch of salt with a salt shaker. That's why everyone who measures with their eyes and fingers needs a salt pig. Ever present near the stove in country kitchens, the salt pig keeps salt – especially the coarse grains of sea salt and kosher salt – within quick reach. And in the open air, they are less apt to form clumps.

This whimsical salt pig was thrown on a potters wheel, hand-painted in yellow and green and dipped in a clear glaze for luster. The bowl is about 1 1/2" (4 cm) deep and 3" (8 cm) wide, and is perched on three 1" (3 cm) legs. Included is a small spoon made of Acacia wood, an environmentally friendly hardwood grown in the Pacific Islands with beautiful grain and contrasting walnut brown to light tan colors. Acacia wood items have a naturally high resin content which resists absorption of stains, odors and liquids.

The salt pig is dishwasher safe. However, the wood spoon should be hand washed.

This soap dish was made in two pieces. The top piece was thrown, then generous holes were added for drainage. The bottom piece was also thrown on the wheel. I made the soap dish after reading a forum where soap-makers and soap-users described what they wanted in a soap dish: large drainage holes and a bottom plate to catch the drips. The clay body is white stoneware, and it is glazed in caribbean green.
