Originally written for the 2-6 year old crowd. Cute for those angel collectors.

Illustrated by the award winning Politi who unfortunately now has most of his books out of print despite winning the Caldecott Medal, this is a rare edition, probably also a first library bound edition, of the loving story about Little Carlito who lives on the outskirts of Los Angeles in the pretty Hispanic section with his parents and dog Blanco who gets lost on Christmas Eve, upsetting Carlito, but it's a sweet, happy ending for the little dog goes inside church on Christmas Eve, curling up in the straw layed out for the Nativity statues of Jesus, Joseph & Mary. Rare picture book written for the 4-8 year old crowd that seems to be out of print, now a collectible since story and artwork by Politi who according to wikipedia, "lived from 1908–1996, was an Italian-American artist and author who wrote and illustrated some 20 children's books...His works often celebrated cultural diversity, and many were published in both English and Spanish. Politi lived in California, London, and grew up "in his mother’s native village of Broni near Milan," Italy.

Hardcover, no dust jacket, and cover has a picure of the boy with his dog. Pages still seem clean and strong. Cover itself is in very good condition, with only minor marks expected of vintage. Little wear, no wear on corners or spine - still very good. Spine still feels sturdy & strong, pages inside still tightly sewn. Once owned by library with old fashioned card holder in back. Library stamps/marks on inside endpapers/copyright/title pages, and are stickered over to look nice.

Published the year this title came out, 1973 in New York.

A very early edition that seems to be a 1st library bound edition of the classic 1960's story about a tin toy mouse Daddy who dances with his little toy mouse son under a Christmas tree, it's an adventure story that some view as a metaphor for humanity, with these 2 main characters starting out as Christmas gifts, yet their owners do not want them or love them, and dump them in the trash. Broken and abandoned, Daddy & Little Mouse are rescued by a tramp who mends and releases them onto a perilous journey, meeting lots of seedy or good characters. Paper pages are still nice and white, clean and strong. Once owned by library so has old-fashioned, vintage card holder in back, some library marks/stamps on blank endpapers, copyright/title pages, but other than that it's as if it's been untouched, and I guess because this was the library's backup copy that was probably never used since card holder says "c2" for copy 2.
Hardcover, no dust jacket. Hardcover in great condition, no marks, not even any edgewear.

Without dj, the cover is brown cloth with Rusell’s name and a bull’s head portrait on front embossed in gold over a black square. See no edge wear, no fraying to cover or spine. No fading – very nice looking hardcover that is still very sturdy, strong, and tightly bound.
Beginning of book has a photo print of the artist.
Paper pages are all very clean and strong, colors are vibrant. No scribbles or pen notes do I see. Very good condition.

Dust jacket has a glossy print of a Native American painting, it’s price clipped at inner corner and has some typical wear – crease marks on front and back, with a few cracks/line tears, taped from inside. On back of dj, ther’es some edge fraying. So dj is not mint condition, but the book is 53 years old, so it’s expected of vintage.

So overall I’d rate the book alone near-mint, and the dust jacket fair/ok, so not for the perfectionist, but may make a nice, thoughtful, gift for that special someone who appreciates vintage, art, and American history.

The oddest thing is that the illustrators aren’t named/credited – they’re just called “the best” and I guess you’re expected to get a magnifying glass and read their signatures printed at bottom. Edge of pages has a coppery-gold embossed tone.

142 pages total. Big but slim: 9 ¾ inches x 13” and is just less than ¾ inch thick.
Printed in 1892 in Boston.
All art in glorious black & white.

CONDITION: For a book over 110 years old, I’d call this very good, but there are minor flaws expected of vintage so please read all….
Hardcover, no dust jacket. Cover is black, imprinted with a design of mountains and stream with “California” in exceptional font – much of it all decorated with very bright & shiny metallic silver foil. Back of exterior cover & spine is plain black, with some marks. Interior of book - art is beautiful, all pages are present with no tears, no rips. Blank endpapers have minor foxing – a sort of antiquated, oxidizing of blank endpapers with little spots, but they’re just the blank endpapers – the MAIN text/art pages are stunning. I can’t believe they’re wood engravings due to such gorgeous details of tiny animals and water drops in many pictures. Paper pages have tanned with age – they’re just a little tan, not brown. Frontispiece has a slight shadowy line I didn’t notice until eagle eye inspection, but overall the artwork is fantastic. Paper pages have aged like a fine wine, yet are still strong, no crackling, or chipping do I see.

Last image shown came out more golden-tan due to my camera and other images are brighter. In person they're quite bright with slight tanning and heavier tanning seems to be in blank margins anyway.

The cover exterior has minor wear-off on corners. Edge fraying on top & bottom of spine – real little like 1/16” of an inch on this tall volume. Cover & spine feels strong. Often spines of old books are soft, but this feels hard. But I would term this fragile –not a book to throw a across a room – when I open it up, and turn the pages, it’s all bound, with nothing disattached, but I like to turn the pages not too fast for the sewn binding feels fragile and may be weak. It’ll last a long, long time, but it’s not a book where you whisk through it. Any other flaws are minor, and expected of antiques.

WOULD I GIFT THIS?
Yes, it’s really beautiful, front cover is gorgeous, but it’s not for the perfectionist, for like I’ve conveyed, it’s not mint condition, and has some marks on spine, and back exterior, frayed edgewear, with antique spotting of blank endpapers. Yet the most important part, art & text is lovely, and magical! I would call it very good, but not mint, not perfect, yet beautiful and aged. For the person who appreciates art, and precious, things over a century old.

Great, thoughtful, 70 year-old gift for the fan of nautical art and history. It's a thin and large book from the 1930's with about 25 full color, full paged, lithographed prints of ships- very big -- with a historic write-up about each boat underneath. Pages are big -- measuring 12 x 9 inches. Illustrations painted by famous maritime illustrator, Gordon Grant, whose individually signed prints and original paintings sell today for $425 and up at major galleries and antiquarian dealers. The inside pages are all beautiful, frameable, pictures- the cover has some scrapes and imperfections (details below), but overall this is a nice copy - would I give this as a gift? To someone who can appreciate antiques, and who isn't a perfectionist for often vintage isn't - then Yes! Wrap it in tissue paper, and it's a unique present. A nice write-up is below each ship's picture - a wonderful resource to have.

When you open the book there's the endpapers (that in most books are usually blank) but are illustrated in front & back, they're yellow with silhouettes of black boats & look nice.

25 pages, very large yet nicely slim book so these pictures are even great for framing. Entire book measures at 12 x 9 inches and pictures alone measure at 7 ½ x 7 with a 1 inch marging around top and sides. Images were lithographed in the USA by Duenewald Printing. Garden City Publishing, 1939, NY.

Condition overall for a 70 year old book is very good to me but please read all: The inside text & picture pages are beautiful...The pictures of the boats look very nice with the colors and artistic details remaining vivid. Overall inside pages very nice. Paper pages still feel strong and seem clean. No browning of pages, may have tanned with age but if so, very light tan/eggshell white -drawings still fine and colors vivid as they originally were.

Hardcover, no dust jacket. Gorgeous on the inside, imperfections on outside....the cover was curated / amended -for at one time, this book looked like Popeye the Sailor carried it around too much, and the cover got worn through & stained. Parts of a Gordon Grant cover print - that exactly matches this book's original cover, were carefully adhered over but the glue under the paper made the title part a little rippled looking - it's nice to give, but not for the guy or gal who gets hung up on everything such as crafty imperfections like that. The boat scene on cover is the original -just the top & bottom wording part had minor, upcycled alterations - it needed it, as museum curators would say, "a band aid." So not for the perfectionist - but the inside is beautiful, untouched, and that's what counts. There's the typical wear off on cover's corner edges, spine, and some scratches on back - overall it's a nice book but the kind Captain Hook would have around. Spine is soft, weak but the pages inside still seem well sewn/bound. Some cloth on outer spine is frayed, yet book is still sturdy, very turnable, and enjoyable. Any other imperfections are minor & typical of vintage. Shabby chic and smart!

Not owned by a library so there's no library marks or stamps.

So I guess I’ve made it clear that this rare antique is not in mint condition but overall very unique & nice for that special someone who would like to own some ship litho prints in very good condition, bound in a hardcover. ! A wealth of information for that special someone learning about ships.

Most of the book covers Round Ships from the Medieval days to the 1800s. Includes so many boats from 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Numerous boats including English warships to the carrack, the bugalet, lugger, howker, felucca, tartane, Norwegian Cat, Bilander, Ketch, Fire Ship, The Pink, Patache, Polacre, Xebec, Saique, brig, the Snow, Corvette, Topsail Schooner, Goelette, Packet Ship, New Bedford Whaling Bark, Barquentine, Clipper Ship of 1850, the Modern Super Ship, and more. Condition: Book is over 60 years old......
Pages have tanned with age like a fine wine.
No scribbles, no tears do I see. The pages have an uneven tone that is as if Captain Hook coarsely knifed them, but I'm finding that's how it was printed, with rough edged-cottony paper. Any flaws are minor and typical of vintage, but no major problems.
Hardcover, no dust jacket. Eggplant purple cloth that looks sunfaded on spine and back edges. If you antique gift it, you may want to cover it in a book jacket. Cover is aged looking as if it was at sea under the sun, on a boat for years. Corner edges are a little bent. Spine has author's name & title outlined in navy blue, with a print of an anchor on it. Open the cover and there are boat scene endpapers and if you look at spine area there you'll see there's been some light tanning.

Any other flaws are minor and expected of vintage so this is not a mint condition book, not for the perfectionist, but for someone who appreciates vintage, looking for something unique.

Measures 7 ½ x 5 ¼” about 1 inch thick

11 full page illustrated pages, including frontispiece, as well as numerous, smaller, black & white drawings too.
Published in Boston, 1931.

Condition: Pages are all intact, nothing torn out or disattached. There’s a crease line on frontispiece page. Once owned by library so has library stamps/marks on endpapers/title/copyright pages. Old fashioned card holder in back. There’s also 4 library stamps on story/picture pages that are faded at bottom edge of margins. Paper is thick like cardstock, and pages seem strong, clean, and well bound and have not really tanned or browned with age – any darkening is slight –eggshell white – very good paper color. Illustrations are very bold and vivid. Some of the story/picture pages have a few oxidized marks where the paper gets tiny tea-colored marks. There’s some of those tiny things dotted here and there and a few other minor marks. Nothing major – no crayon scribble or ink blots or anything like that. The stuff you might expect from a former library book over 70 years old.
Hardcover, no dust jacket. Hardcover is grey with black banding along and near spine. Corner are bent and very worn. It’s very antiquey. Spine feels strong and sturdy- again, well bound.
Would I gift this? I’d first put it in a nice book cover easily made from any wrapping paper – maybe a nice red or purple. If the person appreciates vintage, I’d give it to someone who understood the thoughtfulness of the gift, and one who wasn’t a perfectionist for this has its flaws. Yet its wonderful for that special someone!

About the Author: according to wikipedia, “James Justinian Morier (1780 – 1849) was a British diplomat and author… born in 1780 in Ottoman İzmir (Smyrna), the second son of Isaac Morier, a Swiss-born merchant, British by naturalisation, … He first visited Iran in 1808 as secretary to Harford Jones, a special British envoy to the Shah….” Morier wrote many novels but this was his most popular.

This book was made into an old-time Hollywood film, starring Amanda Blake, but of course it doesn’t have this great art as this very giftable, rare edition does.

Book is very big 7 ½ x 10 ¼ inches and is about 1 ½ inches thick. 80 chapters & 405 pages total.
10 full page full color illustrations plus a 2 page full color map in front. Numerous smaller black & white drawings decorate many pages too. Cover is illustrated in color on back & front.

The image of the map- that’s the endpaper – when you open the book and the map continues on opposite page – beautiful. Front & back cover is pictorial as shown. Has a foreword by Christopher Morley, a famous author in his day.
Of course the Joy and Whimsy electronic type won't appear in actual book.

Condition overall is wonderful: Great condition for a book over 70 years old. With just a few teeny imperfections, this is near mint. Hardcover, no dust jacket . Hardcover is very sturdy, and pages still seem clean and tightly bound. A strong, hefty book. Picture/text on spine has darkened a little since it was exposed to air on a shelf a long time Top edge of spine tanned. Tiny paper wear mark the size of a tack on upper right corner of title page –not a big deal, just getting picky. Pages have tanned a little with age, but not browned, and colors still look very vivid. Do not see any stains or tears on story/picture pages – they look good. Never owned by a library so no library marks, no stamps, was privately owned and well taken care of. When you first open the book in front before the map pages, there are blank endpapers – there and in back that have a browned age line along spine front & back – no big deal – this stuff is expected of vintage.

Not for kids -it's actually the type of story teens may love - but I'm not recommending it for kids since the art may be viewed as provocative -it's fine art published by Random House, but there's a few pics (1 with a dancing girl and other with people almost nude -the kind of nude you see in Renaissance art churches - nothing bad, all good but I'm recommending for adults, leaving parents to decide what their teens should and shouldn't read, great for your boyfriend, brother, grandmother, etc. An 83 year-old family member of mine saw it and found it wonderful.

A very thoughtful gift for that special someone who loves travel writing, historical fiction - time travel back to a long gone world.

Milo Winter has been called one of the great illustrators of the "Golden Age." Nathaniel Hawthorne, noted for his famous novels, like the "Scarlet Letter," rewrote in the 1850's the Greek myths and legends in an easy and more entertaining style so they would be fun, romantic, and exciting, instead of what he termed "cold moonshine". Condition: very good overall for a book over 70 years old. All colorplates are present - often in old books they're disattached, torn out or scribbled over. They're all here and book is still very sturdy & tightly bound.

Once owned by a library yet the pages are very good - it's as if only the librarian handled it. Has library stamps/marks on cover/title pages and endpapers. Library code typed on spine. Old fashioned library card holder in back. Pages seem clean and often with old books they get brown but here I'd just say the text pages tanned a little,
and the picture pages on glossy cardstock like paper are near-white with colors still vivid. Page 141 has a top minor edge tear - really thin and little - like 1/16 of an inch at edge margin- no big deal. Page 173 has a tiny little drop stains over text but still readable and enjoyable -I'm being picky. Look at the image with the unicorn - you'll see a library stamp at bottom edge margin - there's about 8 of them throughout text/story pages. The very bottom edge margin of the King Midas picture (shown) has a tiny shade of paper darkening in a grayish hue - it's real minor at bottom edge - the scanner didn't pick it up well.
Cover on exterior has 2 teeny round ink marks on back. And any other flaws are teeny, minor and expected of vintage.

Not the book for the perfectionsist but put it in a book cover, wrap it in tissue paper and it's a nice token gift of art.

This story of racial tolerance and love goes into April's school life, her Brownie Troop's adventurous activities, her fun friends - and the surprises and adventures along the way, making this a delightful read. Overall this is a very cheery book but it's also a realistic story when some moments in life aren't so sweet -- Germantown back then was mainly Caucasian so there are times when a hurtful moment ensues for our little protagonist-- Wikipedia dot com calls this "a story about the prejudice experienced by African-Americans in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a daring topic for its time..." and this is a poignant story so ahead of its era, portraying a very happy and loving African American family that's emotionally supportive of April who is a very bright and for the most part happy child, who loves herself and others regardless of their race, making her a wonderful character readers will adore.

Text and picture pages still seem well-bound, strong and clean, very readable and turnable.

All story pages in very good condition and the only flaw could see is in the margin area at bottom of 2 pages is a library stamping. In the beginning of the book, next to blank endpapers is an illustrated page without text that has a tear in the illustrated border/margin area. Overall pages are in nice condition.

It's what you'd expect to see on the cover of a 1940s library book cover that's over 50 years old -- although amazingly there isn't much wear on edges --still solid, intact and tightly bound.
So this isn't mint but overall - very good, readable and enjoyable.

Condition: very good. Hardcover amazingly still with dust jacket that looks very nice. Jacket cover is shown in image (see the guard) but my scanner was too small to show the entire jacket but it looks very nice. Once owned by a library so has protective plastic cover taped to dj, and a library code on spine that isn't a big deal since it may be covered with a sticker.
Paper pages still seem clean and strong with colors as they were from their printing. No tears or scribbles do I see.
Hardcover is blue cloth and if you lift up dj there's tape marks on it, but no big deal since the dj covers it.

Old fashioned library card holder in back plus library stamps marks on endpapers/copyright/title pages. 1 other stamp neatly made on last page, bottom of p. 60 in bottom margin area. No problem there.

Overall picture /story pages are very nice, still has dj. Any other flaws are minor & expected of vintage but I'd personally rate this as very good.

Great gift for airplane / aeronautics, or history enthsiasts. In the late 1920s, Charles Lindbergh penned his own biography titled, "WE." This 318 paged book includes numerous black and white photos covering his adventurous life. This is a very early edition printed in the first year it came out, 1927, and has 48 photo prints of Lindbergh's dramatic flying career, shot all over Europe (England, France, Belgium) and America, including great images of New York City's ticker-tape parade in his honor. As for this title....
This autobiography covers Lindbergh's life - his boyhood, his fame, his travels, and telling about the famous and interesting people he met around the globe.

This book has Published 1927 by Putnam in New York. 13th impression. 48 photographic prints.
Book measures 5 1/2 inches x 8 1/4 inches.
Condition listed below but overall, very good for a book of 80 years.

Book was privately owned prior so there aren't any library stamps or marks. The inside blank covers are pale blue with old-timey airplaines printed on them as well as a person's signature with the date written in "December 25, 1927." The same inscription is repeated on the next blank endpaper so obviously this was a gift.

Condition:
Book is in good condition for one printed 80 years ago.
Pages have only tanned just a bit and the paper is still strong enough to easily turn the pages and read without worrying they might crackle apart. Overall, pages and photo prints are very nice.

Exterior: No dust jacket, but jhardcover is very nice, gold gilt over blue hardcover with some minor wear-off on bottom edge area on some of the gold band. Spine still feels quite strong, pages inside seem tightly bound by their threads. Cover's corner edges are a little bent with minor edge wear. Spine has minor edge wear at top/bottom with gold gilt lettering that has minor wear, a few flecks of gold worn off but it's very antiquey looking.
Overall, any other flaws are minor and expected of vintage.

Condition: good for a title over 100 Years Old...
all paper pages seem strong and turnable. No browning of papers - just a slight aged tan one might call eggshell white. Very readable & enjoyable. As shown in image of American Herring Gulls, to the left, at the margin, some dampness had once set in causing a bit of paper-wave - that's on some of the pages, with slight edge water stains, but it's in the margin area, and the pictures are all fantastic.

Navy hardcover, no dust jacket. This is not the book you toss to your dormate - the binding is somewhat fragile- it's all still sewn together and bound with nothing falling out, but the spine is weak so it's something you read on your lap or table, but don't throw around. You may wish to put a paper dj on it for the hardcover is not perfect, and has a few water marks and edge chips - at corners and on spine (at top & bottom of spine) some cover crack-off - a half inch at top but it's minor for the book is very long and big. There's also a thin, white scratchmark about a little over a 1/2 inch long on cover.
No scribbles or tears do I see and if there's any other flaws, they're minor & expected of antique books. It's the kind of book a birdwatcher back in the 1800's probably carried around in a canvas bag with the binoculars, going over hills and through streams.

Overall this is not the gift book for the perfectionist who must have only mint condition items, but it's the unique & thoughtful decades-old gift for someone who loves old antiques in all their shabby chic glory.

I’ve seen this classic about a little girl in 1930s China during New Years, with the 1930s & 50s print editions selling at times for $100 -Why? This classic picture book won the Caldecott Medal that is like the Pulitzer or Booker Prize for American picture books of great art. Fantastic black & white drawings of people, Chinese New Year’s items like big lanterns and dragons, lots of cute animals, and fine detailed illustrations of Chinese buildings. In front & back, this book has vibrant red & yellow pictorial endpapers, picturing maps of the Peking area. Book is 48 pages long and big too - 9 x 12 inches. STORY: Wonderfully illustrated throughout, this is a girl-power story about little girl who is told she cannot do things that boys can do (like being an actor for instance) and so she is supposed to stay home on New Year's Eve, instead of going to the fair. But when her brother gets to go (since he’s a boy) she runs after him, and experiences adventures at the Chinese New Year’s celebration, even getting in on some circus acts, proving girls can do cool stuff too, before arriving home just in time to greet the Kitchen God, and have a meal with her loving family. This 1938 edition, through cheerful illustrations, exuberantly shows Chinese culture and New Year’s customs.

About the Book:
I’m excited to be selling this book because it’s a 1938 print – often booksellers will say they have a ’38 of this book but when you dig a little deeper, it’s a “reprint of a 1938, and is really a 50s’ or some other age, but this really is a vintage, 1938, library edition published the year it first came out in the US, and may be from a 2nd print run since it mentions its winning the Caldecott at the bottom of the front cover. And for its age, it’s in wonderful condition. I ran across this same title, same age, and it had major rust stains & crayon scribble on some of the pages, but this one for sale is very good with no scribbles, and no stains. Any flaws are minor and expected of vintage, and the only flaw I see is a slight crease in the first story page – no big deal there.

Once owned by a library so has some librarian marks/stamps on endpapers with old fashioned card holder in back. Paper pages overall in beautiful condition. Hardcover, no dust jacket. Cover, as shown in image, has picture on cover of sister, brother, and cat, holding New Years banners. Nice long, yet easy-to-read story of 48 pages, originally penned for kids, this has become an antiquarian item collected by adults.

Condition overall very good with minor flaws, a pale little smudge on 1 page, that crease mentioned above. No major problems. The outer hardcover has some wear but looks antiquey and is expected of vintage. It has the typical wear on corner edges. On spine where title is, there are little bits of speckled wear off but no big deal. The top & bottom of spine have wear from sliding in & off of shelves so that top & bottom of spine have frayed cloth at edge about 1/16 th of an inch or less each. I’m being picky, but just want you to know all I see. On back the cover is a solid rust-orange color with a few hairline minor scratches but nothing major there either. The cover has probably darkened a bit over the years due to age and elements in the air. But as you can see from the image, it look nice.

Pages have tanned only slightly and look bright white in images because of scanner flash. Paper pages are a nice eggshell white to palest beige.

I would not recommend this for the perfectionist who only wants mint editions, but for one who appreciates vintage & antiques this a unique novelty item. Very festive for the weeks ahead.

Antique book with a few old-fashioned ads in back. Never owned by a public library - was privately owned instead by a dear man, a Polish intellectual with his name on inside cover/endpages. Book is all text, 442 pages. Measures 7 1/4 x 5 inches, and is over 1 inch thick. Edges of papers embossed in a coppery goldtone.

Antique books usually aren't for the perfectionists, but for the romantics....

Condition:
The endpapers / title page have some marks as you may see in images - minor stuff typical of antiques. Pages 32-33 probably once had a newspaper clipping that got bookmarked in there a long time for it left a browned imprint on those 2 pages that are still readable. The other pages are still quite bright -they've tanned a little, but aren't brown and the papers still feel strong & clean. They're still well-bound but it's an antique so the binding is getting fragile - in other words, it's not a book to simply toss in your beach bag - be a little more gentle with it.
Illustrated hardcover, no dust jacket. Front looks great with only minor flaws like corner edge wear. Spine has author's name in fancy font with design and has maybe faded a little but stil nice. Tops and bottom of spine have wear with some minor edge fraying on top of spine. Any other marks are typical & expected of vintage.

Great antique gift book but it's not in mint condition, so not for a perfectionist, but rather someone who appreciates antique books. Was privately owned prior so no library marks. Not even a former owner's name do I see penned in it.

Condition: Overall, good for a book almost 112 years old but there's some flaws that are...
The pages inside still seem clean and crisp - the illustrated pages are thick & glossy, like shiny cardstock so very strong. The text pages are not glossy but regular paper that has tanned a little with age, but not browned - very good overall. No pun intended, but there's a bit of a wave on some pages. A few pages have a couple of corner tear edges in margin area, not a big deal. There is 1 illustrated page missing at around page 46 and it's not really noticable - I just reference the illustrations list and noticed it -but all other prints are there and for the most part many will love this book. However, I lowered the price due to this issue.
As you can see, the cover itself has the typical wear. It's pearl gray in color with some fading and some wrinkles here and there, as if it was once on a boat and subjected to splashes of water. Hardcover's cloth edges have frayed, mainly at top & bottom of spine. Corners bent with a little fraying too.
The pages inside still seem well bound but the cover isn't so strongly bound to the binded papers inside - has that semi-loose soft feel at spine. Not such a big deal but if you're looking for mint, like I said, this isn't, but it has lots of character, and may make quite the uniqe gift for that special someone.

Condition:
The paper pages are in great condition - still seem strong, clean & sturdy and I get's the most important part, but the spine is weak and binding rickety. I must say this is quite common among books published in the 1980s, the bindings are not as strong & tight as books made beforehand, and it's ridiculous, because you can tell this book was not used very much so binding is poor & flimsy. There's a hairline scratch on front cover, no big deal there. Cover is clean looking with typical edge wear.
Former library book with old fashioned card holder in back. There's a few typical library marks/stamps.

A great - actually fantastic - history/reference book with some fine recipes, but not a gift book. Great pictures, great reference.

“DRUMS” is the dramatic and swashbuckling tale of well, so much – the people of North Carolina before it was an American State, still under British rule when its red coated soldiers walked safely through the streets of America. All that changes with the Revolutionary War, North Carolina’s fight against anyone following England’s queen, the North Carolina Rebellion, sending the main character, Johnny Fraser, to see it all from chaos in America to sea battles on the Scottish coast, (he becomes a sailor) leading to brawls, murder, seeking peace, and falling in love.

Story very clearly shows early N. Carolina before statehood, its people, the fight for a new nation, their relationship with Native Americans, the entrenchment of slavery and the early settlers interaction with slaves, and the world at war, during the 1700’s. It is a time of civil strife, when many American’s were torn between sticking with Britain’s crown or breaking free from English rule. Book shows the entrenchment of slavery before the birth of America in 1776, and academics claim this is one of the greatest books ever written on the war. Princeton University’s website states Boyd’s “ work is known for its historical accuracy, psychological and sociological elements, and high craftsmanship.”

Lots of colorful characters – narrated by teen farm boy Johnny Fraser, a North American born son of a Tory, his pal Captain Flood, the riverboat skipper of the Halifax, Dr. Clapton (an English clergyman living in N. Carolina), a lawyer named Teague Battle, Native Americans in the south, Scottish sailor Paul Jones (who later becomes Captain in the US Navy), Wylie the plantation owner, and love interest Sally. Other characters include people from other pre-American states like "Vermonters," and numerous slaves, during a time when the British crown is challenged. Plus a gripping horse race scene too.

MORE ON THE AUTHOR JAMES BOYD: According to answers dot com, Boyd based this book on his own war experiences, and was so thorough in researching for this novel, it's viewed highly historically accurate. He even writes a blurb in the beginning of book, stating anything that might not be true, and they’re just 2 minute little unimportant facts, very minor. Wikipedia says, “James Boyd lived from 1888 – 1944, was the son of a wealthy coal and oil family in Pennsylvania,”….. his “parents were from North Carolina”…”…he was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania…attended Princeton University in New Jersey,………in 1910, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and served overseas with the Army Ambulance Service in World War I. After World War I, due to many illnesses, he was forced into retirement and moved to Weymouth, a house his grandfather built in Southern Pines North Carolina. He wrote five historical novels, including Bitter Creek, which were thought to have elevated the genre through greater historical accuracy, psychological and sociological awareness, and formal craftsmanship.”

MORE ON THE ILLUSTRATOR NC WYETH:
According to Wikipedia: Newell Convers Wyeth “was a realist painter …his illustrations were designed to be understood quickly.” He lived from 1882 - 1945), was an American artist, illustrator, and star pupil of artist Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators.” (I’ve just listed a Howard Pyle book).

The ART: 14 full page, full color illustrations, and unlike other Wyeth books I’ve seen, this also has pen & ink drawings also – lots – about 49 total that take up about 1/2 to 1/4 of pages they're on. Fantastic as an art book alone.

Once owned by a library there’s just a few library stamps on innerboard & copyright page. Once there was a cardholder in back but it was removed, leaving just a film of its paper behind. Hardcover, no dust jacket. Cover is not pictorial, but rather covered in orange cloth. Measures 7 x 9 ½ inches.

436 pages, published in New York, 1956.

CONDITION:
Overall condition is very very good. Inside I looked through the text & story pages for any flaws. Few minor flaws happened during printing, under some of the colorplates, they printed a few text lines – the name of the painting and a storyline – some of the text never printed on the paper hard enough so a few words here and there look broken. It’s not a big deal but I mention it. The only other flaw I see is that one of the colorplates (of the horse race scene) looks very nice – it has a thin almost unnoticeable scrape, as if a scissor once scraped the surface, leaving a scratch on the colorplate – not a big deal – I point it out in the image, but I consider it even frameable. Overall, the story/picture pages are great for a book of 50 years old.

Outside condition: Orange cloth hardcover has very little wear. Just teeny bits of wear on corner edges. There’s a tiny little penmark near front/spine area but nothing major, and you can present it in a paper bookcover. Cloth on spine has a wrinkle, and a “J” penned on it as a library code. There was once a library sticker at bottom of spine and most of it has come off. I’m being picky, but just so you know.

Overall condition: I’d rate this very good, with any flaws being minor & expected of vintage books. Not for a perfectionist, but for someone who appreciates cool things like this.

Note book is for adults and teens – it’s tagged “children’ meaning for young adults, Not for kids 12 and under.

Cool and very different gift for anyone into the history of the world during the 1700’s, including the early US Navy, and it’s Scotsman John Paul Jones (he enters the story later) and regional N. Carolina – in fact often the text is very regional in language – words like “scripteh” instead of “scripture’ may be used, etc.). A very unique gift and art book.

Most of the plot centering on the Black Arrow's avenging his parents death takes place deep in the dangerous woods of Britain's Tunstall Forest although there are some rough sea voyage scenes as well when Richard/Black Arrow is forced to go after the woman he loves, but conflicts endure as our hero soon sees that the people he trusted may really be wolves in sheeps clothing. Condition: Overall very nice, good for a book about 74 years old. Hardcover with pictorial picture on front cover. No dust jacket. There's 2 white scratch/wear-off marks on bottom right corner area of front cover's picture. The kind of stuff expected of vintage, but this isn't for the perfectionsist, rather someone who appreciates vintage, and adventure-based historical novels. Title and author’s name is in faded gold lettering on black spine.

Very well-bound still - feels nice & tight. The paper pages seem clean and strong still, they've tanned somewhat with age to a lightest beige but are not browned, still crisp to easily turn without worrying they'll crackle apart. Nice edition still strong enough that its owner may cozy up to fully read and enjoy.
This book was once privately owned with former owner's name penned on blank endpaper.
Any other flaws are minor - a few with minor teeny edge tears or edge creases, but nothing major. Colorplates all look great - there's 9 altogether. No major rips or tears, no big stains on papers --- Nothing to deter the enjoyment of this book.

A Great Gift Book for art lovers, NC Wyeth fans as well as enthusiasts of literature & history. Cool for men or women.

100 years ago, you'd see more books mixing art & stories on the black arts, legendary saints, and fairy tales you probably never heard of with princesses who sleep in trees with pigeons instead of in castles, and dead saints come back to life to visit the rich and poor peasants. Published in 1915 in New York. Measures 6 3/4 x 9 inches. It's about 1 1/2 inches thick.

The art is opulent & lavish - open it up and the frontispiece is a full page illustration of a satyr-like boy playing a lute for an old Merlin type of man with great wings upon his back.

Condition: For a book over 90 years old, this is quite good but I'm getting to get nitpicky:
Once owned by library so has library stamps and marks on inside boards and endpapers, some stickered over. There's a few library name stamps on a few margin pages of story/text part but just a few. The paper pages have tanned with age but still feel cottony soft, seem clean even though they've tanned somewhat with age. Most papers still in very good condition with just about 3-4 out of 318 pages that are not in the best condition. One such page is shown - the one of St. Nicholas - you can see its image and there's been some yellowing and tearing at upper edge with discoloration in margin area. As you can see the flaws like this aren't too bad for they're at the edges or margins and overall most pages are great. There is one page where there's some broken text and it's just a few small words where you can figure out what's being said, and it doesn't detract from enjoyment of book.

Cover & Spine: Hardcover, no dust jacket. Look at the image of the cover closely - you may be able to see at dent in upper right corner. The cover is a mustard yellow with red & black print. The cover has aged so darkened some. Corner edges bent a little and the cloth of cover is frayed at corners and edges of spine with teeny bits of cover cracked off at bottom and top of spine. The spine has of course weakend with age so not as tight as it was in 1915 but the pages still seem tightly bound enough. It's still holding together well enough, and paper pages are easily turnable without having to worry that they'll crackle & dry up.

So this isn't the book for the perfectionist but for the art lover, the mythical stories lover, the kind of person who is entranced by Arthurian legends might love this, ideal for someone who would appreciates antique books and art.

These poems were translated by Edward Fitzgerald and wikipeidia states:
"Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (Persian) is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and of which there are about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám....A Persian ruba'i is a two line stanza with two parts (or hemistechs) per line, hence the word "Rubaiyat", (derived from the Arabic root word for 4), meaning "quatrains."

Fitzgerald published more than one version of the poem which is why this book contains more than one edition as well, with of course different illustrations. At the turn of each page is a full page color illustration and a page with the verse with decorative designs in the margins.
Exquisite.

Wikipedia's article on MacFadden is really interesting but here's just some of it:
"Macfadden grew a publishing empire, including True Detective, True Story, True Romances, Dream World, Ghost Stories, (Sport Magazine), the once-familiar movie magazine Photoplay, and a trashy tabloid newspaper, The New York Graphic. He was a celebrity who was an acquaintance of Shirley Temple, Clark Gable, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Will Rogers, and Rudolph Valentino. At the peak of his career, he owned several hotels and a major building in New York...Macfadden contributed to many articles....and made an unsuccessful attempt to found a religion, “cosmotarianism”, based on physical culture. He claimed that his regimen would enable him to reach the age of 150.......Nicknamed “Body Love Macfadden” by Time—a moniker he detested—he was a flamboyant personality who inspired millions of people around the world to live healthful and vigorous lives. He was branded a “kook” and a charlatan by many, arrested on obscenity charges, and denounced by the medical establishment. Throughout his life, he campaigned tirelessly against “pill-pushers,” processed foods and prudery.....Macfadden was married four times and had eight children, seven of whose names began with the letter "B".....Macfadden established many “healthatoriums” in the eastern and midwestern states...."

MacFadden's publishing company was called Physical Culture Publishing and this book for sale was printed by it. Easy and simple to read, it was written for the mass market.

Cute book that measures 6 inches x 4 3/4"
Very light, 112 pages. Most pages have large print text and quite a few instructional photos for eye and body health. Each Chapter is named something like fixing "dull Eyes," "Strong Eyes," etc.

Many of these book have pages that have browned and are crackly -- not here - this one for sale has pages that are in great condition - papers seem clean & strong, Still well bound to a sturdy hardcover. No dust jacket. Paper color hasn't tanned, I'd call it eggshell white with some antique print photos of Bernarr himself and a woman model. Rare antique book from the man who began fasting and lots of health crazes the world over.

Privately owned in past so no library marks, has former owner's intials penned on blank endpaper. Hardcover has bent corner edges, minor wear on edges, nothing major. Wrap in colorful tissue paper and it'll be adorable.

By the author of “Vanity Fair” that became a Reese Witherspoon movie, here is a Dickensian, wild historical novel by the same author, Thackeray - a great antique gift book for fiction readers & history buffs - it's about Henry, growing up illegitimate, the son of a wealthy, powerful man, later becoming an orphan, getting fostered by new parents, eventually falling in love with his Cousin - but marrying someone else (I won’t give the surprise away) while becoming a colonel during the reign of Queen Anne, and campaigning for the English Restoration movement to get James Stuart on the throne. Pen & ink illustrations in next images (more in book). Strong characters with names like Beatrix, Lady Castlewood, Mr. Congreve, and Mr. Addison. Politics, lovers, intrigue…it’s all here. It is an American edition by the New York/Boston publisher, HM Caldwell. The few scarce copies I know of by this publisher are not in the beautiful condition this is in. They are different – red cover instead of green and taped up to keep from falling apart. Here this green/gold one has paper pages that still seem clean and strong and haven’t really tanned – I’d call them eggshell white. Very good.

415 pages. Illustrated with full page, black & white drawings (about 8 altogher, including the frontispiece portrait of the author himself).
Measures 5 ¼ inches x 7 ¾. About 1 ¼” thick.
Published by HM Caldwell NY/Boston.

Wonderful illustrations that look better in person -the publisher didn't give the artist any credit so I don't know who drew them. The funny thing about HM Caldwell Publishing (that I don’t believe is around anymore, but if they are they might be a subdivision in a conglomerate) but they often didn’t print dates in their books. The original British novel was originally penned in England around 1852 so this reprint obviously was published sometime after. Other vintage book dealers call this “late 1800’s” but I’m not sure. To be safe I'd safe 50 to 75 years old. Bookmarked inside this was a bakery ad I’ve kept in for a bookmark, and on it are the prices of cakes and pies, priced 20 to 30 cents. So it’s very antique!

Condition: Very good for an older book - would I give it as a gift? Yes, I'd wrap it up in tissue paper and box it. It's that nice. On one page at bottom margin area there was a tear but not a big deal and I see nothing else on the other 414 pages. Was privately owned in past so no library marks.
Hardcover, no dust jacket. On inside cover there’s a sticker for the bookstore it was purchased at, Frederick Loeser & Co Bookstore, and there’s a stamp of the owner’s name and he must’ve been a Professor or student in New York City for he gives a Columbia University address.

Exterior of book looks wonderful with only minor little bits of wear at corners and edges of spine. Spine decorated with gold gilt text & design also. I’m very gentle when I open the front cover so it doesn’t come unhinged since the glued on paper over the board has a crack, but pretty minor stuff, again not a big deal and overall great condition for an antique.

Cool gift for the reader or historian. Going out regular media mail unless otherwise requested.

Gorgeous red, gold-gilt covered book from 1915, full of 700 illustrations (photos & reprints of paintings). If someone doesn't know anything about opera - this is the book to give, and if one loves opera this also is a unique gift for it tells their stories in pictures and text, giving the history on great productions like "Aida" and "Carmen," as well as the lesser known shows, like "Lakme" and "Hernani."

Covers and summarizes about 126 opera stories, and includes reprints of paintings reflecting magical shows like "Siegfried & The Dragon." Makes a great gift for a man or woman. I've seen opera books but never one as grand and lavish as this. I love many opera songs but do not see the shows - I'm not a diehard - yet I've had fun looking at all the bold and dramtic pictures. So if I who isn't the ultimate opera buff loves it, imagine how an opera fan will feel. Ideal coffee table book too.

This book was created by one of the world's first record companies, Victor Records (later RCA) with the little dog logo at the victrola. The book was published to be a visual guide for American opera lovers who bought the records but either couldn't afford to see an opera, or just didn't live near an opera house. Since there was no TV back then, this book was the next best thing. It also contains 1200 descriptions of Victor Opera Records.

All photo and painting reprints are in black & white.
700 illustrations
2 page index covering about 126 operas.
Published 1915.
Spine at bottom says in faded gold "Victor Talking Machine Company."
Measure 6 x 8 1/4 inches and is about 1 1/2" thick.

Condition: Overall very Good for its age. Only flaw may be minor to most for the book slants (it's not warped) but slants as if a heavier book was on top of it at one time. Other than that it seems perfect for a book around 85 years old. Beautiful cover, no dust jacket. Hardcover still so gold and shiny it looks as it was when purchased in 1915. The gold design and text on spine is still gold and shiny too. Pages still seem crisp and clean. Burgundy endpapers. No marks, no rips, no tears seen. Any other flaw is minor and expected of vintage.

This rare book includes folk rhymes, movement games, and music/songs of old China along with language-learning word translations, and beautiful pictures, illustrated by the artist Chao Shih Chen. This is the only bilingual Chinese/English illustrated book I know of among vintage. This book is for readers ages 4 and up up up into adulthood.

The book is set up with a color illustration showing each game. In English text, the beliefs, culture, and origins of the game are described. Then on the page opposite the illustration come Chinese characters with English words underneath, teaching readers how to pronounce them. Following this is often a song and accompanying music to play, and last are directions in English as to how the children should play the movement games. For example, clap hands, jump, grab a partner, etc. The movement games inside are fun for children of all cultures and mak great excercise. Also in the back of the book are pages of nouns, verbs, etc written in both English and Chinese characters so that readers master the languages.

When I first opened it, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the main pages that include text, songs, and Chen’s delightful pastel illustrations --19 in full color and about 15 in black and white – were in good condition without children’s scribbles and serious tears. Sometimes the pages of old books are too fragile and chip and break when touched but not here. Binding still good and pages have tanned a little with age yet still seem sturdy and strong.

Illustrated hardcover, no dust jacket. Cover has cute picture but not for perfectionist for it's not mint/perfect and has some darkened age spots on it - but it can be covered with a bookcover, and is expected of antiques - I saw another copy of this once where the cover was not too good - this is so much better. This cover is illustrated in color and has some flaws expected of vintage. Was NOT owned by a library, so no librarian marks, no stamps, was privately owned with no marks found.

The pages have aged of course but as you can see from the jpegs, Chen’s delicate illustrations still bloom with color. In the front of the book it seems another illustrator named Seacord has drawn a portrait of Chao Shih Chen herself!

96 pp.
Originally written for ages 4 and up. Book measures approximately 10 1/2 inches x 8 1/4 inches. Bilingual Chinese/American-English. Includes illustrations in both color & black & white, music, English Text, and corresponding Chinese Characters New York

A famous artist illustrates the biography of a great poet and doctor:

This antique book contains approximately 23 black & white drawings by the famous artist William Merritt Berger (whose sketches are housed at The Smithosonian and sell on the art market for good $$$) and here his drawings decorate this biography about the famous poet / doctor Oliver Wendell Holmes. According to ArtNet.com, where his artwork sells, it states "He was an illustrator who did assignments for Scribners Magazine, as well as Pictorial Review, Liberty, and Lindsay and Paulsson.”

According to Wikipedia, "illustrator William Merritt Berger was born in Union Springs, NY. He studied with William Merritt Chase and George Deforest Brush."

This illustrated book is about the Massachusetts-born famous literary writer, Oliver Wendell Holmes who according to Wikipedia "attended Harvard and wrote humorous poetry and songs for the Hasty Pudding Club. He lived from August 29, 1809 – October 7, 1894 and was an American physician (which is why I tagged 'health/science') and professor who also achieved fame as a writer....one of the best regarded poets of the 19th century."

Library bound book in good reading condition – pages still cottony-soft and strong enough for turning without worrying about them crackling apart but note that out of all 213 pages, 1 page --(p.75/76) -- has a tear running from bottom up ¾ of page but it isn’t an illustrated page and the text is still readable and easily repairable with tape or glue- however you want to do it, if at all.

Orange Hardcover, no dust jacket but cover has full William Merritt Berger illustration on front. Once owned by a library so has code penned on spine and the typical library stamps/marks inside. Look at the jpeg of the title and you’ll see that at the spine there is a split at botttom. Only other flaw found is so teeny- a corner of a page was folded down as if to bookmark it.

Overall rare and even more rare to get the book in this orange illustrated hardcover since the only others I’ve known of are blue. Nice for Fathers Day – or Mothers Day. A unique keepsake collectible.

It was cold 'Old Man" since it looked like an elderly man's profile but it collapsed in 2003 when its its granite visage slipped off into the valley below. Before then “Old Man” was a popular tourist attraction since 1805.

Author, Nathaniel Hawthorne called it ''The Great Stone Face." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow mentioned him in ''Hiawatha." Daniel Webster wrote, ''Men hang out signs indicative of their respective trades . . . shoe makers hang out a gigantic shoe . . . the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there he makes men."

Stunning 22 karat gold plate perfect to to put on a plate stand and display in your home. 10” wide.
On back of plate it states 22 karat gold, by Sabin Crest-o-Gold, with a signature stamp of W.S. George.

Condition for this listing is very good - gold gleams in person. Any flaws are minor and expected of vintage. If you want to hang it on the wall you'll have to put a wall hanger on back - it's pretty heavy this plate so I think it best to dispaly on a plate stand.

Very rare to find a New Hampshire plate in 22 karat gold. So festive and beautiful.

The back of this artwork’s fabric has the date of original creation, “1967” in Roman Numerals, printed by the craft supply company that made it. At front, artist signed her first name and the year of completion - ’89.”
The embroidery is done with yarns – you might call this type of fiber art, crewl stitch.

This rare art is stretched over cardboard that is 16 x 20 inches but if you need to make it smaller to fit a wall, you may. The smallest you would make it is approximately 14 x 15 since that is the size of the girl's head, hair & accessory.

The canvas-like, cheesecloth-like fabric is stretched over the original cardboard artist mounted it on. The tape was really old, so I had to peel it off and put transparent, storage tape on it, but you may reinforce with whatever tape you wish.

IMPORTANT Care Instructions:
Artist had signed her last name on back in red ink – not a good idea because when it got wet, the red ink blurred, but thank goodness it was only on back where it didn’t affect picture. However, she also signed her name (in tiny letters) on front with the “89” so that teeny part should never get wet. So this never dirties, it should be behind glass or an acrylic pane – if you don’t have a frame, at least keep under a clear plastic bag until you do. By just comparing the back to the front, there is a big difference in fabric age – the back that was exposed to air & dust has darkened whereas the front (that was protected by glass for decades) is still very light and all colors have remained vibrant and beautiful as they originally were. This was once spot cleaned with soap and water near the top. Afterwards ironing was needed and to iron, a spray bottle was used, (for it’s hard to iron fabric when dry) gently spraying water on the area, and ironing out all wrinkles. But overall, don’t get the little red ink name wet.

Condition: Very good – as stated above, the artist’s last name on back blurred up from water stain. Front is great – there are minor imperfections expected from a fabric of the 1960s, crafted in the 80s. Tiny thin water stain – so faint it’s like a ghostly-thin beige and there’s an age spot that’s also a faint beige – not really noticeable unless you’re being really picky like, but I need to be. On the edges of front of artwork, the steel frame it was once in, left a few metal-ish grey marks on very edge of fabric, right where is pulls over edge of cardboard but when framed, it’ll be covered up, and if you choose a smaller frame this won’t matter either.

I actually have the original frame but the glass is cracked at bottom, and the clips to secure the art in back – a few are missing – there’s only like 2 clips and you need 4-5. However if you want the original frame, I’ll be happy to list it and do combined shipping. I would have to take out the glass though and just mail the frame with the clips and you can get new glass or acrylic. But the frame is around 16 x 20 – a very common, easy-to-buy, poster size in your area.

Each side of this box was originally a jiffy frame/yarn embroidery kit that was purchased in a crafters store. Each flower/plant was beautifully stitched (I believe it's crewl work) then framed.
Then all 4 frames were glued together at corners over a wooden base to create a box. It's 4 wall hangings in one transformed to be used instead of hanging on a wall. There is a wooden bottom but no top lid. Fantastic home decor. So rare, never saw anything else like this in my life. Fantastic find. Cool gift for someone who loves handmade, one-of-a-kinds.

Still strong & sturdy - if you put a real plant inside it, be careful when watering so that water doesn't get on the pictures, because sometimes water leaves marks. Each wall of this box is made of the stitched canvas-like fabric. There is no wood on the interior except for the frame edges. Inside, to protect the backing of the fiber art, crafter put in cardboard from the original jiffy frames boxes. You can't see it unless you peek your head in, and you can line interior of box with foil colored paper, but if it was me, I'd leave it as is.

Don Perceval's silhouette artwork tells the wonderful story of a Havasu boy who lives at the Grand Canyon, and how all the villagers come out to see he and his best friend Gato in a horse race. Artist,Don Perceval, known as a preeminent Taos painter, immersed himself in American Western culture, especially Native American Indian tribes like the Havasu. His biography is all over the web as well as his original paintings. Author, Harry James,also spent months on a Havasu tribe before writing this work of creative nonfiction, based on facts and what he saw. Very telling of the Havasus' customs and way of life in an endearing boyhood story. Makes a very nice art-history gift book if you take the dust jacket off for other than ripped dj, book is in very fine, clean condition for a former library copy - please see details below.

Condition: Book itself is very good...this is a hardcover with a dust jacket and not all books of 40 years old still have their dj's and this does but it is ripped on back (as shown in picture) and on front over title area especially. So dj not so good but good enough to keep on and protect the book as well as reading the flap information.

Without dj, hardcover is in great condition, looks new, ideal for gift giving with only flaw being a library code penned on spine. Book itself is beautiful, story/text pages still crisp and clean. Art look awesome. Once owned by a library so will have the vintage card holder in back, and expected library marks/stamps inside, especially on title/copyright pages and endpapers.

Originally written for middle readers/young teens, this is a collectible vintage book by a great tribes artist.

Condition: very good, once owned by a library so not mint of course, has the old fashioned card holder in back. Pages seem clean with no dark tanning, still quite white, and paper feels strong and easily turnable. Easily enjoyable. No dust jacket but this hardcover has color picture of Hitchcock as a vampire on cover and only minor miniscule marks with teeny, pinhole sized dent on spine, no big deal. Well bound, spine feels sturdy and strong. Librarian marks/stamps on endpapers, title/copyright pages, and a few stamps in margin of story pages. Other minor teeny marks here and there, typical cover rub-off, a corner paper crease, but nothing to deter you from these haunting pages of fear and fun.

This book is tagged "children" meaning for young adults age 13 to adult. These stories are not for children's 12 and under age range.

The back cover (as shown), advertises the 20th Century Fox “new” movie starring a then-young Harrison Ford, along with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Alec Guiness. This collectible book is approximately 5 ½ x 8 ½ inches. 183 pages, including some full color insert pages for stills of the movie.

Book was originally owned by a private individual (NOT a library) and has the owners name/sticker still inside front cover that peeled off the book, leaving its sticker imprint. Book in very good, especially since it’s 30 years old.

Dust jacket has little wear if any at all – just minor wear along some of the dust jacket edge and I see a few teeny-tiny pinpoint-sized or smaller wear marks, mainly on dj spine and back cover but I’m being really nitpicky b/c the wear looks like the slight wear you see on new books shelved in a major chain and overall it looks very good for a book of this age and it is difficult at times to find books like these that still even have a dust jacket. Often they’re gone. This hardcover is still strong, sturdy and its pages are still well-bound to spine. Excellent condition for a 30 year old classic collectible.

This Hard-To-Find Book is in very good condition. Blue design hardcover with no dust jacket is in very strong and sturdy condition. Pages seem clean and never used. It was once owned by a library and it seems as if the librarian may have been the only one who opened this book since the pages are still crisp and unmarked with the exception of the typical library stamps/marks – mostly on the title page, endpapers, and I saw a faded stamp on the bottom of 1 page. Genuine vintage with the old-fashioned library card holder in the back and library code on spine.

Outside of book is very clean looking in good condition. Perfect for all the upcoming birthdays, holidays, and spring/summer outdoorsy events!

Super rare antique photographic colorplates and travel journalism book that tells the true story of the dramatic and spellbinding world of 1870s Japan. Penned by R Van Bergen who witnessed Japan’s intense political revolution that would metamorphose the people into a great Empire, and the author documents historic events he saw first-hand, letting readers into his world so you learn about the emperors, princesses, samurais, “the battles, the plotting, the friendships the hatred.”

Like an expert journalist the author became acquainted with many Japanese revolutionaries and gives an inside account of the land’s historical figures while at the same time this reads like a fascinating travel book, describing the cities, the castles and oh so much more. This book is so rare that you may never see it for sale in your antiquarian bookshop and if you do it may cost much more than this edition that I am able to make affordable since this is a library bound edition, published the same year as the first edition in 1901.

In the preface, the author states:
I have known… the men, whose story I have endeavored to tell. They are now honored under the simple name of Genrô,—statesmen of Revolutionary Times. Of the brilliant array of patriots whose names appear in these pages, only Ito, Inouye, and OKuma remain…..(This is) a true story of devotion, sacrifice, and self-restraint. …..All the characters as portrayed in these pages, were living actors in the great national drama. Of those whose names have never before appeared in print, Karassu Maru, the only impulsive noble I have ever known, was the first imperial governor of Yedo. He died in August, 1872, and I attended his funeral. Honami came to Yedo with the emperor, but he was soon sent back to Kyoto, where he was placed under guardianship….”

Hefty book of 246 pages , 8 photographic colorplates
Measures 4 3/4 x 7 1/4.

Hardcover with gold-gilt text and a red Japanese symbol on spine. Front and back covers are solid black. Library code stamps on spine as well. No dust jacket and cover is in very good condition with only minor wears on corners and edges.

Once owned by a library so has library stamps/marks on endpapers, copyright and title pages. Dedication page at front is taped on blank side. Book still very tightly bound. Only flaws found on the story/picture pages are a few minor end-of-page small tears that occur when people turn the pages too quickly- no big deal.

Paper may have tanned (just very slightly with age but is still clear and feels smooth, strong and thick like cardstock. The only issue I see is for this first image shown here of the man in Samurai attire -- along the spine where this colorplate page is bound, it has developed a crease just from the natural opening and closing of the book. The crease runs up and down and because it's at the along the edge of photo, it doesen't take away from enjoyment of it, but I mention this because the crease is wearing in, starting to look like it might someday crack apart --not now but it has that issue that may not or may occur someday. Even if it happened the image would still be great in book and frameable. So I'm being nitpicky because it's not mint but it's a GREAT book that makes a very unique and different gift someone will always remember you by.

This volume is a rare 1959 treasure trove of large, colorful, full-page illustrations by the great Norman Rockwell that you’ll want to take out of the book and frame. All art and text relates to the history of scouting, troops in other countries, what they do, wear, and their word lingo and activities. Patches, medals, the handshakes – it’s all covered and is a history book, a Scouts Reference book and Rockwell art edition all in one – it’s fantastic!

Copyrighted 1959 - it's hard to find this edition this old and yet paper pages still feel crisp and new.

Hefty and thick, 165 pages, including comprehensive Index. 9 Large full-page illustrations and the rest of the book has half page and quarter page illustrations –99% in full color. Great for scouts ages 13 and up, guide leaders, troop collectors and art lovers.

Hardcover, no dust jacket.
The inside main pages look beautiful which is amazing for a book just about to turn 50 years old. Outer hardcover has a large illustration of a scouts badge/symbol in red with a blue eagle on the front set against a tan background. Library code penned on outer spine where there is some wear-off on spine;s top and middle area plus minor wear on cover's bottom and corner edges. There is a thumb-sized smudge mark (like that of newspaper ink) on front cover and a smaller pen mark on back, and blank endpapers and copyright/title pages have library stampings /marks but inside main pages are colorful and Rockwell-remarkable.

So it's excellent on in the inside and worn on the outside -- you can always add a dust jacket to put over the cover.....as long as the inner pages are wonderful is what matters. And they are fantastic.

So overall this book's cover is not mint, but because there are no rips, marks or scribbles on all the good art & text pages inside it's a cool vintage-to-antique gift for that special older scout, guide, collector or art lover.

Very extensive, comprehensive book, 213 pages with INDEX that makes a great gift -- not too big or heavy -- just right, weighs about a pound or less and measures at 9 x 6 inches.

No dust jacket but so easy to cover it up with one of your own and is of sunshine-yellow cloth hardcover.
It seems this it out of print. Many of the photos illustrations may be hard to find but here you have it all.

Former library book that seems as if the only one who touched it was the librarian - no scribble or tears - pages still in strong, well-bound condition. Only flaws are library left their stamps and marks mainly on blank endpapers/cover pages that are covered with stickers so looks NICE for gift giving. TIFFANY LAMP / SALOON STYLE MIRROR 1970s

Both printed mirrors and Tiffany lamp designs were huge in the mid to late 1970s, inspired by songs like, "The Entertainer" and movies like "Ragtime" and the saloon-scened "Midnight Cowboy." Here's a cool, ready-to-hang mirror, quite big, and printedon the glass are a tiffany lamp hanging over a vase of flowers on an ornate table, surrounded on both sides by an ornate ash rose, 1970s design. Quite big so you can really use it to check your hair, makeup, and clothes besides using it for decor. Colors look more vivid in person and are all mainly neutrals that match most rooms - browns, peachy-pinks, grey, black, and deepened ash-rose.

Measures: 17 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches. Mirrors are hard to photograph without myself in them and to avoid the indoors bulb light, I took pictures outdoors so you may see my hand, camera, and tree branches reflected.

Includes frame with fake wood design, but you may want to change the frame for it's in poor scratched condition, or possibly keep it if you're the type who likes it shabby chic. Behind mirror is wire for hanging on any wall to visually brighten up, widen, or elongate a room.

Condition of just the mirror part: pretty, adds whimsy to a room, has wear expected of vintage (a few dots on lamp)- but most noticeably on the fine black outlines that go around the picture that wore off in some parts (as shown in jpeg) most noticeably 1/4 inch at top (as seen in images) as well as rub-off/breakage of other line for it seems that part is most delicate when washing, whereas the main printed picture -- of the lamp/flowers, vase/table and intricate design seem more heavily printed and less vulnerable although still delicate with minor teeny flaws.

When cleaning this, I recommend a gentle feather duster, and if one must wash, wash gently, going around the fine lines and not on them, be gentle.

Condition of just the metal frame -- The frame seems very intact and strong, yet visually it's very scratched up with dots of its fake wood surface come off in many parts, exposing the metal underneath, as shown in jpeg. Frame feels strong but one may want to paint it or replace it.

Note: not a lead-tested item for children 12 and under. Decor best for apartments, houses. or dorms with teens and adults only.

Rumer Godden is the writer who Demi Moore named her girl after and here is the beloved author's Halloween novel that's an enchanting story about trust. Originally written for the tweens / younger teens market, it's now a collectible even enjoyed by adults, and this particular copy is a 1st American Edition.

Set on the Scottish border, this story begins with young Selina who vows to be a good witch (despite being told only bad ones exist). This tale includes an inheritance, a cranky but golden-hearted old man, an abandoned boy, with Selina as the main protagonist.

127 pages

1975 First Edition, Hardcover with Dust Jacket that has a library sticker taped on dj spine and the paper jacket has rips along the edges and a few of these are 1/4 to 1 inch. Take off the jacket and the book is red and in very good condition.
Still tightly bound.
Paper still feels crisp and strong.

Aside from the library marks on inside cover/endpapers/title and copyright pages, the book looks like it was barely read. Old fashioned library card holder in back.
