Handmade Woodcarving of a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)

You are purchasing a miniature version of the Great Blue Heron. Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) is a common site in the saltwater flats of the coastal bend of Texas. This tupelo wood carving was painted with acrylic paint. Blue Herons spend most of their time at the edge of shallow ponds and bays, slowly patrolling their territory for aquatic pray. With lightning speed they snatch little fish, tadpoles and crabs from the water.
The feathers are sculpted in detail. The bird is painted and airbrushed to achieve a realistic look. The base is a
combination of a red oak burl and walnut. The feet were made from copper wire, covered with epoxy, sculptured into shape and then painted. Approximate size: 9.5 inches by 12 inches.
All my carvings are made in my art studio here in the coastal bend of Texas. Each carving is made from start to finish by me. This involves cutting out a piece with a band saw, roughing out the wildlife, then detailing the carving and painting the finished carving with habitat. You are buying an item that is ooak and hand made.

This is a carving of a Killdeer. The Killdeer is made of tupelo wood with a walnut base and habitat.
The bird is life-size and measures 7" high and 9" long.
All our wood carvings are made in our art studio here in the coastal bend of Texas. Each piece is band sawed, then carved to shape. Intricate feather detail is accomplished with a combination of stoning and burning (pyrography). The legs and feet of all our birds are handmade using copper and brass tubing, wire and plate. Once the wildlife carving and its habitat is completed, the sculpture is sealed and then painted using a combination of airbrushing and artists brushes. The painting medium used is acrylic paint.

This life size tupelo wood carving was painted with acrylic paint. Meadowlarks spend most of their time in open fields, often sitting on a fence or post, announcing with a loud beautiful song that this meadow belongs to them. The feathers are sculpted in detail. Handmade Gourd Potpourri Container

Using pyrographic (wood-burning) tools the basket weave and outline of the butterflies were fashioned.
The gourd without stem is 10 inches high and the widest surface has a diameter of 6 inches.
Twelve butterflies were burned and painted with acrylics on the gourd. In addition interference colors and iridescent colors were used on the butterflies that iridize. Reference material was used to simulate butterflies encountered in different parts of the world. The final product has been sealed with a polyurethane sealer.

Handmade Woodcarving of a Female Belted Kingfisher

This is a carving of a Female Belted Kingfisher with a small mullet in her beak. Female Belted Kingfisher is made of tupelo wood with a oak burl base. The burl is polished to a high gloss and the branch attached to it is modelled after a mangrove branch.
Overall measurement of carving and habitat is 17"x13"x10".
The bird is life-size and measures 11"x7"x4".
All our wood carvings are made in our art studio here in the coastal bend of Texas. Each piece is band sawed, then carved to shape. Intricate feather detail is accomplished with a combination of stoning and burning (pyrography). The legs and feet of all our birds are handmade using copper and brass tubing, wire and plate. Once the wildlife carving and its habitat is completed, the sculpture is sealed and then painted using a combination of airbrushing and artists brushes. The painting medium used is acrylic paint.

Handmade Wood Carving of a Broadtailed Hummingbird on a Morning Glory Vine

The Hummingbird, Morning Glory Flower and the Leaves were carved from Tupelo wood. The vine was constructed from copper and brass tubing and rods. The vine is mounted on a Mesquite wood stump that was carved to represent a weathered look. The wood was then sealed, sanded and polished to a mat shine.

Dowitchers are a winter resident of the coastal bend of Texas. This life size tupelo wood carving was painted with its summer plumage. The winter plumage is a slate gray and not as colorful as the summer plumage. They spend a lot of time standing and sleep in shallow water. Each feather is sculpted in detail. The bird is painted and airbrushed with acrylic paint. Approximate size: 11.5 inches by 19 inches.

Handmade Green-winged Teal Drake Woodcarving

You are buying a life size wood carving of a Green-winged Teal Drake.
The duck was carved (sculptured) from basswood. After roughing out the bird fine detail was carved with various high speed bits. Additional feather detail was achieved with a burning pen (Pyrography). The finished artwork was then sealed and painted with acrylic paint using a combination of an airbrush and regular artist’s brushes.

This beautiful stained glass rendition of a Flying Mallard Drake (Anas platyrhynchos) is made in the copper foil Stained Glass method. It was inspired by our frequent encouters with these beautiful ducks, that migrate in the fall in huge flocks to the saltwater marches in our area of Texas. It measures 12.5 inches by 21.5 inches.

Handmade Woodcarving of a Carolina Wren Family

This carving of proud parents and their chicks won the Blue Ribbon in the Open division of bird groups in the 23rd annual Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers show in January 2009. This group of birds is displayed on a base (manzanita root)with a natural hollow that was carved to simulate a nest. It is about 7" high and 11.5" wide.
All our wood carvings are made in our art studio here in the coastal bend of Texas. Each piece is band sawed, then carved to shape. Intricate feather detail is accomplished with a combination of stoning and burning (pyrography). The legs and feet of all our birds are handmade using copper and brass tubing, wire and plate. Once the wildlife carving and its habitat is completed, the sculpture is sealed and then painted using a combination of airbrushing and artists brushes. The painting medium used is acrylic paint.
Many pieces have been crafted using patterns that we created in our studio or that is modified by us.

This historic lighthouse is also known as the Lydia Ann Channel lighthouse. It used to mark the Port Aransas inlet for shipping to Corpus Christi. As a result of hurricanes and storms the inlet has moved south and the lighthouse is now a historical landmark. This stained glass panel measures 18 by 15 inches.
We created this stained glass pattern from a photograph taken by a friend.

The American Avocet was carved from from tupelo wood. The feet were made of soldered brass and copper wire, covered with epoxy and then sculptured.
All my woodcarvings is carved and painted by me in our art studio. Each carvings is unique. The bird and its habitat is made with reference to many photos and measurements from ornithological experts. Quite often I spend some time in the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and Industry with study skins of the bird I am carving. Detailed study of feather structure, color and markings is essential to simulate the colors and markings on the feathers of the carved bird.
Once the wildlife carving and it's habitat is completed, the sculpture is sealed and then painted using a combination of airbrushing and artists brushes. The painting medium used is acrylic paint.
