I plundered the feather from a selection gathering dust in my brother's old fly-fishing box. Tying flys out of feathers to lure hungry fishes always held a fascination for me when I was growing up... (although I recall tying something closer to a heavyweight moth than delicate little insect when I tried it out for myself).

This ethereal image was captured with my trusty pinhole camera - a humble converted Pringles tube. The image is part of my darkroom photogram series - the colour photographic paper was torn to size and loaded directly into the 'camera', exposed, and then processed in RA4 colour chemistry. The resulting raw negative image is this richly saturated yellow due to the long exposure from the pinhole camera which alters the delicate colour balance of the photographic paper.

After years of developing polaroids with wonky biscuit tin cameras, developed with broken polaroid rollers under duvets or winter coats, this polaroid kit is a simple luxury to use and gives the beautiful grainy depth of field that makes pinhole photography such a joyful tactile process.

There's a pot that sits just outside my back door which houses a big, leafy banana-type plant. I'm in England so it does OK in the summer but it sits and sulks in the winter... and while it sulks, the moss grows in the soil around its base - and it's the most beautiful, spindly and delicate moss I've ever seen. Everytime I see it I think to myself I have to photograph it. Finally I dug a piece out and took it into the darkroom to make a photogram out of it.

Feathers. A slight obsession of mine as you may see from my other listings. It's part of my darkroom photogram series - created with light from a camera enlarger directly onto colour negative paper, processed in RA4 colour chemistry and contact-printed to create the positive image.

This particular image has a slight idiosyncrasy to it, at the bottom right of the image you may see ghosted lettering saying '1 sec one stop down'. I'd written notes about the light exposure on the back of the negative paper but instead of using a pencil I'd grabbed a pen in a hurry and the resulting text showed up when I contact-printed the negative. I considered digitally airbrushing this text out of the picture but have decided to leave it in as it's part of the history of the image, plus you'd never get that on a digital photo.

I went through an odd phase a while back of dropping everything and anything I could lay my hands on into molten wax. My studio (and fingers) started to resemble a spooky embalmers palace with fabric, flowers, deads insect and even foodstuffs lying around the place an a waxy translucent overcoat. This piece of wax-trapped fern is all remains from that time so I thought I'd photograph it as a memento.

I plundered the feathers from a selection gathering dust in my brother's old fly-fishing box. Tying flys out of feathers to lure hungry fishes always held a fascination for me when I was growing up... The frond itself is from a small plastic decoration (from lovely Etsy seller Epoch beads) which I had caught my eye for very purpose of photogramming. I have left in all the marks and textures from the colour-processing as I think it adds to the warmth and character of the piece.
