I have always been enamored with the author Jan Messent's knitted people and animals, but knew there must be a way to knit them in the round and in one piece! I decided to take a stab at this dilemma and came up with this pattern, which I must admit is well worth the stitch counting and small needles! Watch a being come to life in your hands! Children will love these bendable and animated dolls! The pattern is for the body of the doll plus the clothing shown on the doll with the green skirt. This pattern is for the intermediate to advanced knitter, although an advanced beginner with enthusiasm and courage could surely tackle it as well!

Finished Height of Doll: 7.5 inches
Yarn: Louet Gems Sport Weight, 100% Merino Wool, (225 yds/100 grams), 1 skein—#01 Champagne,
#02 Ginger or other desired skin tone.
Yarn for hair, eyes and mouth in desired weight and color (approx. 5 yards for hair),
Yarn in a similar weight as skin for clothing (approx. 50 yards each of 3 colors)
Materials:
US #2 (2.75mm)—set of 5 dpns (5” works best)
Removable marker
C-2 Crochet hook (or similar small gauge)
Tapestry needle
Small snap (for skirt)
5 pipe cleaners
Wool for stuffing
Gauge: 30 sts and 32 rows = 4” (10 cm)

I grew up with a couple beloved hobby horses/stick horses that I rode confidently around (even in real horse shows) until I was fortunate enough to own a real horse of my own! A felted hobby horse is thus quite dear to my heart and this pattern is sure to create lots of imaginative play for your child and for yourself in its creation!

Felted Hobby Horse

This sweet pony is ready to make that horse crazy child a real cowboy/girl or jumper! As a child my absolute favorite activity was tending to my hobby horse (at least until I was lucky enough for the real thing!). The grey pony is made from 100% wool that has been knitted and felted. The stick is securely attached and the eyes are needle felted on for safety and realistic detail!
