This scene was photographed with a few different cameras on two different occasions at the family beach house in New England. I dragged out some furniture onto the beach and set up this scene which I’d had in mind for a photo shoot. Although it was August, it was freezing and my teeth were chattering. When the fog decided to roll in, the temperatures dropped even more, and though I suffered, it made for one surreal scene - - particularly when combined with and aided by the old Polaroid camera and expired film!

The day was a typical cold grey winter day in Manhattan. I stood outside on East 41st street and removed my gloves in order to take a photo of this architectural icon. The windchills were below zero, and snow flurries swirled about my head. Zooming in as close as my camera would go, I did my best to hold perfectly still in order to capture the amazing detail.

On foggy days like this, when the air feels still like a salty veil blessing all it enshrouds, I notice more the sound of my footsteps than the tidal rhythm just beyond being punctuated by two muffled foghorns, and the occasional seagull's cry. Days like this move at a different pace, on a separate plane.

This is a print of a Polaroid taken with a folding sx-70 camera using expired film somewhere off the coast of New England. If it were not for the fog, the view of a gorgeous ocean would be visible!

Walking home after a late dinner out in my neighborhood one windy summer night, I came upon a bicycle chained to a post outside a local nightspot.

There was a heavy canvas banner sign which hung out over the sidewalk, and wafted by the gusty forces, it moved in and out of a stream of available light causing the bicycle to find itself alternately illuminated, then hidden in darkness.

I was captured by this ‘flipbook’ picture show and stood watching; sounds of billowing canvas and distant traffic in my ear.

Soho (NYC) was originally known as the Cast Iron District due to a plethora of cast iron buildings, many of which held warehouses and factories. Some of those still remain; but most have moved on, ousted by outrageously rising rents. This has been my home for nearly 20 years, and I witness the vast changes to the face of this historical district almost on a weekly basis.

I rarely go out to run errands without at least one camera in tow just in case something catches my eye. Here is a print of my photograph taken of a cast iron building’s abandoned storefront window on one of the cobblestone streets in my neighborhood. It provided a perfect canvas, with its dripping paint, filth, and envelopes leaning inside the glass for the reflection of life across the street.

Or so it would seem. Actually this photo was taken at my family beach house with my SX-70 Polaroid loaded up with some pretty old film. The emulsion did not lay very smoothly, as is common with expired film, and causes a blotchy and streaky appearance. I’ve increased the contrast in order to bring out more dirt, too; somehow that works well with the old fixtures and nostalgic scene.

Peek inside and get a glimpse of a different world, an alternative Oz, if you will. Coffee-syrup clouds paint this glorious view, (befitting of the New England locale) taken with a toy plastic Holga camera one August just as the sun was setting.

To this day I still do not know how I came out with these colors; yes the film was cross-processed, but such magic never occurred in this color scheme before or since. And such detail with this camera has yet to be captured again. I'm still not sure what the bit of double exposure in the upper left corner is from, (it appears to be a seagull on a pier post) nor why it is only in the corner. None of this happens in the real world. Thus my title....

The hedges protecting the beach house since the 30’s have provided me with a place to play or hide as a child, and have weathered many hurricanes. Snarly trunks and branches, covered in lichen from the heavily salted air and fog stand tall facing the house, then gently slope down towards the lawn, their tiny tendrils extending secret offers to the ocean beyond.
I used my Polaroid SX70 with expired film to take this photo. The old film contributed to a poetic portrayal of faded memories and the endurance through time.

Yes, this *is* a real photograph, taken with medium format film, in a light-leaky plastic 'toy' camera called a Diana (remakes of them are all over the market now, this is an original.) Blind Doll

He's peeling, and cracked, and he has no eyes, though nice shiny boots, and an apparent sixth sense. Atop a high, high shelf in a hoity-toity antique shop in Manhattan, he oversaw (well, not visually) everything, while he himself went overlooked. Until that fateful day my best friend walked in, and knew this doll 'belonged' to me. I unwrapped him at a Birthday dinner, and knew right away that, though blind, he'd found his way to me, and would find his new home full of similarly afflicted brothers and sisters to be the comfort he'd never had before.

I collect antique toys (among other old items), and my intention at some point is to make portraits of the entire collection. I’ve got a long way to go! Here are a few of my white-wigged (real hair!) German compositions half dolls from the 20’s. They live with me and their brunette, blonde, and redheaded sisters. Gold lighting was actually used for the shoot rather than doing this effect digitally.
