HOW IT WORKS:
Miss Magdalen will read your (or your gift recipient's) cards using one of five Tarot decks and several reading formats or spreads, to be chosen at the time of the reading. Usually, these spreads are an adaptation of an eleven-card Celtic Cross or a five- to seven-card Burning Tarot spread. This is a genuine, heartfelt, honest reading and asks that the Querent also come to their reading with a spirit of heartfelt honesty, ready to rock.

No online, cookie-cutter, cookbook quickie readings. This is the real thing. It's also fun, though, and not overly woo-woo. You will receive a handsome hand-designed gift certificate (email for details).

IN-PERSON READING:
Approximately 80 minutes. Usually available in Portland, Oregon; in 2010, I'll also travel to the San Francisco Bay Area/Oakland, Eugene, Seattle (and points between Portland and Seattle in Washington, say Olympia), Santiago Chile, and Rapa Nui/Easter Island.

Querents may choose from several Tarot decks: the Burning Tarot, the Medieval Scapini, the Morgan-Greer, the Golden Tarot, and on rare occasions, a special edition, numbered, gold-printed version of the Salvador Dali deck. Fun! Long-format reading must be redeemed before email mini-readings.

Miniature narratives and rhythmic metaphors redefine the words that tell life's big stories. Limited collector's edition of 50 signed, numbered books hand-bound in silk. Hand-set in Deepdene and letterpress printed in two colors on recyled paper using soy-based inks by Clare Carpenter of Tiger Food Press. Case-bound, 48 pages, approximately 4" x 6".

What's in a word? A crashing spray of images, memories and associations, it seems, in Tiffany Lee Brown's aptly titled A Compendium of Miniatures (Tiger Food Press/2 Gyrlz Quarterly). In this beautifully hand-bound hardcover, Brown, a Portland writer and performance artist, creates bite-size riffs on two dozen or so evocative nouns.

Exhaustion is "an orphan in a grey sundress." Acceptance is "a taxi ride to a far-off airport." And delight (my personal favorite) is "the soft approach of feral kittens." But reading is only half of the pleasure of perusing this lovingly hand-set and letterpress-printed volume, of which only 50 copies were made.

THE STORY:
Prose poems follow the poet through life's biting and cynical moments, on through to places of hope and understanding. Obliquely, the narrator struggles with homelessness, sexual harassment, and exhaustion... but ends up learning to accept the beauty in the world, however sentimental it might be at times. Love, getting engaged, fish, cats, orphans, commitment, and death are all right here in the Compendium.

PHOTOS:
Book spines... Tiffany reads from the Compendium at Blackbird with the Oregon Literary Review... even cooler book spines... the poem "Commitment"... an art patron picks up the book within the large-scale art installation "Against the Wall," which examined the collaborative process of writing and book arts.

BENEFITING:
All proceeds benefit the Book Arts Fund of 2GQ, a non-profit literary and interdisciplinary project of 2 Gyrlz Performative Arts in Portland, Oregon. Very few available. Collector's edition.
