1793 'Lachenalia Tricolor. Cape Cowslip.', Antique Original William Curtis Botanical Magazine Engraving, Pl 5992

This lovely original 217-year-old hand-colored botanical engraving is from William Curtis’s 'Botanical Magazine or Flower-Garden Displayed', published by Curtis from 1787 - 1800.

Featured here is Tab. #5992, 'Lachenalia Tricolor, var. Aurea, a native of South Africa.' The Cape Cowslip.

The painting is on card, measuring 5.75" x 9.25" (14.6 x 23.5 cm). Very little tanning is seen and the three magazine binding holes are readily seen at the right center edge. There are no marks, creases, folds or tears on the page.

A very prolific periodical, Botanical Magazine' under Curtis as Publisher, featured gorgeous copper plate engraved botanicals, exquisitely hand-colored under his supervision, with descriptive text on each plate. Curtis wanted the work to be scientifically accurate, so plants were drawn meticulously ~ as the magazine title page states,

"Intended for the use of such Ladies, Gentlemen, and Gardeners, as with to become scientifically acquainted with the Plants they cultivate"

Along with the hand-colored engraving, this listing includes the descriptive page as well as a copy of the Magazine cover for provenance.

A sumptuous study for framing ~ for your entryway, your bath. Or perhaps as backgrounds for your art? ... the work is classically beautiful.

The Symbolism Of The Rose

The rose was used in various ways. Its buds were made into jellies & tarts, its leaves used to treat vision problems, thyme soaked in rose vinegar was used to soothe agitation. Monasteries, the hospitals of the Middle Ages, were the chief centers of rose cultivation.

Roses play a symbolic part in tapestries featuring unicorns, where the unicorn symbolizes the bridegroom. The unicorn, tamed by a virgin, is no longer fierce. So too, God became gentle through the Virgin Mary.

From Sir William Jardine's 1832 'The Naturalist's Library', here is a sumptuous hand-colored engraving featuring three 'Heliconia' butterflies of the rain forests of Suriname and Guiana. Finely etched & published by William H. Lizars, a leading engraver from Edinburgh, the art is sadly not credited.

The plate measures 4.2 x 6.5" (10.6 x 16.5 cm). There is a gentle all-over tanning & the page shows very little to no soiling or foxing to betray its 175+ years.

An absolutely stunning French pochoir print from Paul Louis de Giafferri's 1925 magnificent folio work ~ 'History of Feminine Costume from 1037 - 1870'.

Hand painted on a card stock-weight paper, the prints are simply scrumptious. This plate features 9 hand-colored illustrations of 'Corsages', or blouses or corsets, from the Second Empire era, 1852-1870 (Pl 6).

1932 'A Lady', Portrait by Jean Dunand, Antique Embossed Chromolithograph, Perfect For Framing

Stunning page from a 1934 French journal, L'Illustration.

The page was meant to be removed from the journal & was included as part of a tribute to the life & work of Swiss Deco Artist, Jean Dunand ~ sculptor, interior designer and considered the best lacquer artist of the Art Deco period.

The piece is spectacular ~ an embossed chromolithograph titled only as 'Portrait' & signed only as 'Jean Dunand (Laque)' and was, at the time of publication, in the collection of the Artist in Switzerland.

The Lady's gown is a rich royal blue, the folds are embossed lending texture & depth. The blouse is a rich Asian lotus design of embossed silver on a teal into royal blue ground. Her eyes are clear & her gaze is strong. I have no provenance to this, but I think the woman is Dunand's wife, the love is so very evident in the work.

The paper is heavy, a card-stock weight, with a gentle sheen. The embossing is quite clear on the blank reverse. The page measures a grand 11.125" x 14.875" (28.3 x 37.8 cm).

Please expect the normal edge pings seen in paper of this age but nothing of significance ~ matting and framing will easily so to these minor imperfections. This is a lovely & vibrant work that simply should be framed and enjoyed.

One gorgeous page from the 1913 volume, 'Costumes Parisiens', reprinted in 1980.

The originals of these beautiful lithographs were pochoir prints (engraved & screen printed/stenciled) and mounted on card. Designers included in these monthly fashion journals, whose publication lasted only 2 brief years due to the outbreak of WW1, were leading commercial artists of the day.

The fashion artists here are Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Loeze.

The 2-sided page measures 9" x 9.5" (23 x 24 cm). The paper is wonderfully heavy & has only a very gentle tanning. The illustrations are fabulous ~ clear & bright & the page is without tears, folds or creases.

Either side would be wonderful to frame ~ perfect for bath or bedroom, for dressing room or your sewing studio. So lovely. Or, perhaps you'll find use for these in your card or scrap-book page making, collage or mixed media.

From Fulgence Marion's 1869 'Les Ballons et Les Voyages Aeriens', here is a wonderful illustration featuring the 1st balloon flight to carry passengers.

The date: September 19, 1783. Where: Versailles, France. And just who were those passengers? A chicken, of course. And a sheep and a duck.

The steel engraving shows very little tanning along the edges & the engraving is clear & smooth. The paper measures 4.25" x 6.875" (10.8 x 17.5 cm) and the reverse is blank. There are no folds, tears, creases or marks on the page.

Fantastic to frame & gift to that aeronautical daredevil you adore. From an 1892 astronomy atlas, here is a stunning steel engraving showing our moon as we see it on the 13th day of its cycle, along with an accompanying plate showing the same view in linear form, with location identifications.

Each page measures 7" x 8.25" (17.8 x 21 cm). The pictorial plate and the chart remain attached with the protective tissue guard between. There is virtually no tanning to either page because of the tissue guard & there are no tears, folds, marks or creases on either paper.

From Court Magazine, February 1834, a beautiful hand-colored steel engraved fashion plate captioned simply, 'Dinner Dress'.

Court Magazine, 'Original Papers by Distinguished Writers' was a "Ladies Magazine" and was *the* authority for Fashion and the Arts for early 19th century London Society.

The 175-year-old engraving has a still-attached protective tissue covering; the colors are clear & vibrant and the paper shows very little foxing.

The engraving is signed 'EP 1833' and measures 5.75" x 9.5" (14.6 x 24.1 cm). There are no folds, tears, creases or marks on the paper.

From Court Magazine, November 1834, a beautiful steel engraved landscape features 'Penshurst Castle', home of Sir Philip Sydney, 16th century soldier, Elizabethan poet and all around general bon vivant of his time.

Court Magazine, 'Original Papers by Distinguished Writers' was a "ladies magazine" and was *the* authority for Fashion and the Arts for early 19th century London Society.

The 175-year-old engraving has a still-attached protective tissue covering; the portrait is clear & beautiful with only the surrounding margins betraying its age, showing light foxing ~ and matting or framing will readily take care of this.

The paper measures 5.75" x 9.5" (14.6 x 24.1 cm) & the engraving measures 4.75" x 6.75 (12.1 x cm). The art is credited to W. Daniell & the engraving to M.J. Starling. The landscape was included in the November 1834 edition of 'Court'. There are no folds, tears, creases or marks.

Here are 5 great pages from the 1918 Liberty Weekly Income Record and Income Tax Record ~ 'The Proper Book of Records of Your Business'.

The book's titled page is dated 1918 & pages follow bookkeeping records from January 1918 through May 1923.

The handwriting is in blue, black & red pen & is clear & neat with very few mark-outs. Some ink-ie splotches where the fountain pen blooped but, all in all, a very neat bookkeeper of record.

From Court Magazine, July 1834, a beautiful steel engraved portrait ~ 'The Honorable Mrs. Norton'.

Court Magazine, 'Original Papers by Distinguished Writers' was a "Ladies Magazine" and was *the* authority for Fashion and the Arts for early 19th century London Society.

The 175-year-old engraving has a still-attached protective tissue covering; the portrait is clear & beautiful with only the surrounding margins betraying its age, showing light foxing.

The engraving measures 3.5" x 4.75" (8.9 x 12.1 cm) and is credited to G. Hayter & J. Cochran. The portrait was included in the July 1834 edition of 'Court'. The entire paper measures 5.75" x 9.5" (14.6 x 24.1 cm) and there are no folds, tears, creases or marks.

Two beautiful illustrations by Arthur Rackham, gleaned from a damaged a 1983 reference book on children's book illustrations.

Both illustrations were included in the 1916 volume, 'The Allies' Fairy Book'. They were taken from the following stories & are captioned ~

The 1970s were all about button earrings. Casual & tailored, dressy & bold ~ it was button earrings dressing up or casual easy in thousands of ways.

These are 1970's pierced brass earrings with a beautiful rosy rhodonite button'd center. The patina is lovely with a detailed hammered design.

There are no maker's marks on these. The total diameter 1.75" (4.4 cm) with a .5" (1.3 cm) center stone.

With the attached tissue protecting the plate, it is in wonderful antique condition, clean & unmarked ~ the tissue bears the sweet captioning ...

'Polyommatis Arion. Large Blue'. What a lovely name for a beautiful butterfly. These 3 beauties were gleaned from Sir William Jardine's 1833 'The Naturalist's Library: Entomology'.

The three butterflies (with 2-views each) are studies in glorious blue & have been finely etched & published by William H. Lizars of Edinburgh, *the* engraver of his time ~

Polyommatus Arion. Large Blue.
Polyommatus Alcon. The Alcon Blue.
Polyommatus Corydon. Chalk Hill Blue.

The plate measures 4.125 x 6.5" (10.5 x 16.5 cm). With the protective tissue covering still attached, there is very little tanning to betray these past 175+ years. The top edge is gold tipped & the edges are clean & clear. The corner tips have only gently softened. There are no tears, folds, creases or marks on the paper.

A beautifully sweet paper and, if you adore blues ~ perfect! Frame or use in your art ~ it's a lovely antique paper.

One gorgeous page from the 1912 volume, 'Costumes Parisiens', reprinted in 1979.

The originals of these beautiful lithographs were pochoir prints (engraved & screen printed/stenciled) and mounted on card. Designers included in these monthly fashion journals, whose publication lasted only 2 brief years due to the outbreak of WW1, were leading commercial artists of the day.

The fashion artists here are George Barbier and Bernard Boutet de Monvel.

The Symbolism Of The Rose

I love old maps. There is a romance to them ~ illustrated journeys to places far-away & unknown, adventures forever laying in wait for me. Colors rich & luxurious, quietly beckoning.

This map, or chart, is from an 1877 American 'Atlas and Cyclopedia' ~ a fascinating steel-engraved double-page presenting a map of 'Spain and Portugal'.

The plate measures 10" x 12.375" (25.4 x 31.4 cm). This is a double-page which was folded to be included with the book, so there is a vertical fold cleanly down the center.

The paper, at 130+ years old, has a few edge pings or nicks, but nothing which matting or framing won't easily see to. It does have a gentle all-over tanning. The paper is clean, without tears, creases or marks or other folds.

An absolutely stunning original French pochoir print from Paul Louis de Giafferri's 1925 magnificent folio work ~ 'History of Feminine Costume from 1037 - 1870'.

Hand painted on a card stock-weight paper, the prints are simply scrumptious. This plate features 9 hand-colored illustrations of 'corsages', or blouses, from the era of Louis XV & his mistresses, Madame de Pompadour & Madame du Barry, 1640-1715 (Pl 6).

The paper measures 10.75" x 14.625" (27.3 x 37 cm), with a very gentle edge tanning & the reverse is blank. There are no tears or folds, creases or tears. The colors are bright & lovely and the illustration key is at the page bottom in French text.

Antique porcelain three-piece set ~ Lidded sugar bowl & creamer ~ from Leonard-Vienna, Austria. What a gorgeous addition to your autumn & holiday table!

Wispy hand-painted flowers, leaves & grasses in shades of lemon, toast, sage & eggshell. Flower petals have been embellished with raised white highlights. The handles are curled & twisted ribbons, accented with swirls of bright, warm gold.

The large, lidded sugar bowl is 7" (17.8 cm) across the ribbon-like handles & 3.75" (9.5 cm) across the bowl; it stands 5.75" (14.6 cm) high from base to lid handle.

The graceful creamer measures 5.5" (14 cm) spout to handle x 5" (12.7 cm) high x 3.25" (8.3 cm) across the bowl.

Both pieces show the mark & stamps of Leonard, Vienna Austria dating the pieces to 1900 & the lid has the artist's mark, 7926/51.

No chips, nicks, cracks or hairlines on these pieces, with only minor wear to the bright gold paint on the handles.

A beautiful small glass bowl, vase or accent piece.

The heavy blown base is sparkling clear ~ the color flowing gradually into a sweet butter yellow & then on, with a fluid changing, to a glowing gold at the rim.

The piece is petite at 3.5" high (8.9 cm) with a pinched fluted rim. At its widest, the vase measures 4" in diameter (10 cm); the bottom base is 2" in diameter (5 cm).

From a Donald Art Company NY's 1950's "Portfolio of American Landscapes", a wonderful lithograph of John Rogers' watercolor ~ 'Harvest Time'.

Rogers work was hailed as having 'a keen insight; portraying the American wayside and rural scenes in all their seasonal changes and brilliant color.'

Ready to be framed, the signed lithograph is printed on a heavy cream textured card stock and has the look & feel of an original watercolor.

The paper measures 10" x 12" (25.4 x 30.5 cm) and the image measures 6" x 8" (15.2 x 20.3 cm). The paper is clean and clear, the edges smooth & the corners sharp. There are no folds, tears, creases or marks on the page.

One gorgeous page from the 1912 volume, 'Costumes Parisiens', reprinted in 1979.

The originals of these beautiful lithographs were pochoir prints (engraved & screen printed/stenciled) and mounted on card. Designers included in these monthly fashion journals, whose publication lasted only 2 brief years due to the outbreak of WW1, were leading commercial artists of the day.

The fashion artists here are Robert Pichenot and Francesco Javier Gose.

The 2-sided page measures 9" x 9.5" (23 x 24 cm). The paper is wonderfully heavy & has only a very gentle tanning. The illustrations are fabulous ~ clear & bright & the page is without tears, folds or creases.

Either side would be wonderful to frame ~ perfect for bath or bedroom, for dressing room or your sewing studio. So lovely. Or, perhaps you'll find use for these in your card or scrap-book page making, collage or mixed media.

Two beautiful illustrations by Edmund Dulac, gleaned from a damaged a 1983 reference book on children's book illustrations.

The first lithograph was originally included in the 1911 edition of "Stories from Hans Anderson", illustrating the story, 'The Real Princess' and is captioned ~

"I have hardly closed my eyes the whole night! Heaven knows what was in the bed. I seemed to by lying upon some hard thing, and my whole body is black and blue this morning. It is terrible!"

The second lithograph was originally included in the 1910 edition of "The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales", illustrating the story, 'Beauty and the Beast' and is captioned ~

"Soon they caught sight of the castle in the distance"

The page measures a grand 8.25" x 11" (21 x 28 cm) & each image measures 6" x 7.5" (15.2 x 19 cm) & both are enormously frame-worthy. From a 1887 geography book, here is a beautiful steel engraved map of our world featuring 'Isothermal Lines Showing the Mean Annual Temperature of the Air in Degrees of Fahrenheit's Scale'.

Really old & really official stuff, eh? Plus there are all those wonderful old map-ie colors we remember & love.

This is a terrific, over-sized double-page, with a fold down the center & measuring a grand 12" x 18.75" (30.5 x 47.6 cm).

From an 1892 astronomy atlas, here is a stunning steel engraving showing our moon as we see it on the 12th day of its cycle, along with an accompanying plate showing the same view in linear form, with location identifications.

Each page measures 7" x 8.25" (17.8 x 21 cm). The pictorial plate and the chart remain attached with the protective tissue guard between. There is virtually no tanning to either page because of the tissue guard & there are no tears, folds, marks or creases on either paper.
