Extreme Visual Journalism booklet

$12.00
In this intensive workshop we will explore “Extreme Visual Journaling” assignments that are designed to access deeper information on many different levels. This workshop attempts to capture, through mixed media paintings, drawings, collages and experiments in self portraiture as metaphor, a moment in time where freedom of expression is utmost and all considerations to color theory, value, and technique are meaningless. Whether you know you are an artist or believe you have no imagination, you will expand and deepen your expression and discover an inner cache of possibility and creativity that you didn’t know existed, thought was killed or taken away or left to rot, or thought didn’t belong to you. Creativity explored makes the process of self discovery fun. Uncovering the shadow self can be an intimidating, difficult and painful experience. But if you can witness it through your beauty, which is your expression, your dark side will be balanced by your newfound acceptance, compassion, and forgiveness by viewing your amazing and remarkable Self on the page. We are complicated beings made up of many intricate layers. Journal writing helps uncover some of these layers, while image making can access others. But by combining art AND writing, we delve into the most ancient worlds of our being. We begin to remember who we are and why we are on this planet. We see ourselves on the page and become our own witness. This is meaty stuff: raw, honest, and incredibly beautiful and sweet. Through Juliana’s safe and experienced guidance we will discover a wealth of expression and creativity to direct each individual to become their own wise person, Shaman, or Curandera. Each of us will know whether we need to look into our shadow, express the longings of the soul through the whispering or screams of the Spirit, or just find a safe inner place to feel free to create and express ourselves without judgement or pressure to perform as artists. Welcome little ones.
The real "thing" is your own expression, guided by my assignments.

***

Heart Matters:
Extreme Visual Journalism With Juliana Coles

Booklet Cover is in full color.

no prior art, writing or loving experience necessary/for all levels

Explore your authentic self spiritually and emotionally by learning to focus on true matters of the heart through intention and creative expression. By combining art making with journal writing in the safe container of a book you will discover hidden desires and what really ignites your passion. Everything you need to know is inside and Extreme Visual Journaling is a tool to make that inner wisdom tangible for healing and transformation. There are only two things in this life: love and fear. Speak compassionately to both these sides of yourself through the revelations of your unique symbolism and the rich poetry of your voice to create a personal mythology. This is how we romance the haunting language of the heart. There is joy in there somewhere. Your life depends on you discovering this direct pathway to the real you. Your heart and soul matter.

Supplies:
Visual Journal: A Visual Journal can be an altered book, antique scrapbook, a sketchbook, scroll, record album covers sewn together -anything you want it to be- it is the container for your openness and willingness to explore your heart matters. In this workshop, our emphasis is on process, not product. If you have time, you may desire to make or decorate a book worthy of your Heart Matters. It could be small and tender ( not too small), or fat and juicy, or prim and proper, or covered in velvet. It could have red pages, bloody, wounded. It could resemble a teenage diary with lock and key, a glam girl’s secret boudoir, an erotic bordello. Feel free to bring collage images that speak to your heart, for whatever reason.
We will create to your heart’s content.
Supply list: Please bring: Your favorite supplies or your traveling mixed media tool kit. You will definitely need the following: your favorite glue - I love big UHU gluesticks, scissors, some brushes for your paints, a rag or two, and a jar for water. All visual journalists should have a set of rubber stamp letters, stickers, press on type or any other cool fonts. And I highly recommend Staz On stamp pads because we work so quickly. You will need acrylic paint- any brand, any color in at least two colors, one light & one dark. You will need at least two brush markers in different colors- black would be good. And a permanent black marker. Bring a graphite pencil- regular old number two is fine, but if you can get to an art store get an ebony pencil, or a 6B, or a graphite stick (not charcoal) just make sure that you have some wet items and some dry items.

***

Please email me if you have any concerns meandpete@msn.com
or call me at 505-341-2246

The Reconstruction Era

Some booklets have cardstock covers with colored paper pages. Where indicated, covers, and covers only, are in full color. I am selling a process, not a product. The booklets are not the "thing", but rather house a virtual workshop using my process. The real "thing" is your own expression, guided by my assignments.

***

The Reconstruction Era: Rebuilding the Self through Shadow
(see sample pages- not sure if you can tell how built up these pages become but it is rich!)

With this retreat kit learn to create the coolest Visual Journal you will ever reconstruct! This is a great project to do with a group of cool friends. Not for the faint of heart...

Kit includes: Retreat handbook - a black and white xeroxed booklet on pink paper with a full color cover with a few color images inside. This is a two day retreat.

“Reconstruction Era: Rebuilding the Self through Shadow”
Visual Journaling meets Artist Book in this unique self expression retreat created by Juliana Coles.

Dear Potential Builders: Discover Soul reconstructed and reclaimed from the bits and pieces of self we have discarded along the way by combining journal writing exercises with art making assignments in the remarkable container of an unusual reconstructed artist book. ( a process created by Juliana Coles)
Fear, a necessary survival instinct, is our constant companion, no matter how we pretend to ignore her. But by activity seeking her out, challenging her, through Visual Journaling and radical artmaking, we learn to act on her instincts rather than blocking them, shutting down, fighting or inner sabotage through self inflicted anger. With fear as our ally, we reveal her wisdom in the pages of our reconstructed Visual Journal. We go into the deep recesses of her hiding places: gently exposing them to the light of the page. We learn compassion for her when we hear her tiny child’s voice: we pay attention, comfort her and in doing so, learn to break down her misguided but protective illusions and reconstruct ourselves, in the context of an artist book, but now with a more genuine foundation. It’s time to journey to the deepest part of ourselves by challenging the unknown. The realm of the unknown, or shadow, really contains our authentic self. It’s time to develop that side by letting her voice speak. The Reconstruction Era relates to the rebuilding of the South after Internal Civil War. We are familiar with that dark side of ourselves- a place that would enslave others (or be enslaved) and treat human beings as unfeeling property. We now learn to value our shadow as fuel for expression & unlimited creativity, as we learn to rebuild our self, our life and personal history through art and words.
Reconstruction begins with the symbolic removal of the pages or guts of a found book. We rebuild her from the garbage of our lost selves to create a unique artist book, not merely altered, but fully reconstructed. This aspect of the retreat is a real experience in letting go- in creating from nothing- and learning to trust our instinctual side that has been hidden. This is where we give up perfection and our need to control the outcome by allowing art to arrive, as opposed to contriving it or muscling it to be well-behaved or “nice” for some invented audience. The rest of the retreat is spent learning to hear this lost self through Visual Journaling exercises that will serve as life long self dialogue tools.
You will need: A found book (or 2 or 3!) that appeals to you any size larger than 5“ x 7“ any size width, and your favorite mixed media supplies.

Each student will be required to bring a “Mystery Bag.” A plastic grocery bag or smaller will do. Some suggestions are collage items, paper, an old paintbrush that is all glued together, that orange paint you hate, stickers from when you were 14, Artist tools and supplies you no longer use or never liked, torn up pieces of your artwork that didn’t work out (no recognizable artwork, please) books to cut up, magazines, office supplies, sticks, markers, 2 inch chewed up pencils, you get the picture-sort of a grab bag. We will be using these mystery bags as part of a mixed media warm up assignment. What, and how much to bring, is up to you. Don’t worry about trying to include nice things- we’re looking more for garbage items. We all ready have our own nice supplies-we want your cast offs to really make us think!
***
Please email Juliana Coles with any questions or concerns: meandpete@msn.com
check out meandpete.com

Extreme Journalism 101/ Initiation Trilogy

$25.00
I just taught this workshop series at my studio and decided to offer these three booklets as a trilogy: Expressive Drawing, Exploits in Composition (also known as The Art of Repetition ,) and Word - The Art of Lettering. These three booklets should be in every Extreme Journalist's Library as part of your foundation for expression. Get all three together in one kit for only $25.00! (Each booklet sells individually for 12.00!)

Extreme Journalism 101: Initiation Trilogy
Everything you need to know to develop self dialogue through layered, rich pages
for beginners as well as advanced extreme journalists

Repetition/Composition. Expressive Drawing. Word: Lettering for the Extreme Journalist

Exploits in Composition/The Art of Repetition:
Repetition is necessary to artmaking and creativity- it allows us to create and develop a series, it assists us with composition, and greatly aids our experimentation process, which is the basis for all art making. This workshop will concentrate on setting up repeating black and white images for high impact, and learning how to work back into these black and white images for interesting affects that can be used with any other art form. At the risk of repeating myself, I’ll repeat myself: The art of repetition is a creative device we will use to set up and develop the pages of our visual journal. We can start with one image, repeat it like a quilt, or shrink it down, make more copies, and create a border. Or blow it up and expand on one single or central idea. From one idea, from one possibility, we get many. The art of repetition is like a birthing ground or a playing field and is soothing or Zen like in that we don’t have to think about, or brainstorm what comes next, we just continue with our series and allow the potential to flow. This gives our mind freedom to come up with new ways of picture making and story telling. It’s in these repetitive experiences that we have our aha! or eureka, I’ve found it! moments. This is the perfect introductory workshop for those interested in discovering my style of working!

Repetition: get to know your local copy center. Bring a bunch of interesting images- photos, patterns, even some of your own artwork- or small sections of your artwork to your favorite copy center and play around with the self service machines. Get to know them. See what they can do. Test out the different functions. You may need a little help at first, and most copy stores are very happy to help answer all your copying questions. Change the settings: there are settings for just text, for just photo, and something in between. Some settings will give your images shadings or tones of grey- we do not want that- we want the real black and white graphic images. Take your images and blow them up. Shrink them down. Cut them up and blow them back up again. I love doing this and always have a good time seeing what happens. Photos and portraits work really well. Make a series of repeating images- they can all be the same image- or images that look similar. We’ll need three batches of different repeating images. You’ll need at least 10 of each- some repeating the same size, and some in in different sizes. Bring at least one that is almost as big as the size of your journal book page- preferable a figure or big head! Bring these stacks of images to class and be ready to cut, paste, and go crazy with layering materials!

for any questions or concerns email Juliana Coles of Pete and Repeat at meandpete@msn.com

Expressive Drawing
We can all draw, though it may not be how we expect it or how we think it should look. So we are convinced we can’t do it. We’re not good at it. We don’t know how. We can’t draw a stick figure. We can’t draw even a straight line. It’s time I show you otherwise, because drawing a straight line has nothing to do with expression. The Visual Journalist uses drawing in order to document the world around her- not to be great or render a perfect image. There’s little life in that. Drawing is just note taking. Drawing is research. Drawing is learning to see and to make comparison‘s between this and that. A scratch here, a line there, that we carve through our years and smear across the pages of our Visual Journal. This is not drawing 101. We will not be learning to draw crumpled bags, still lifes, shading a box, or any other boring mechanical drawing exercise taught in art school. I am going to challenge you to redefine what drawing is and how it should look while you learn to make marks in your own unique style, in your own strange and beautiful hand through my pioneering methods of Expressive Drawing. Your drawings will not look like mine: they will look like your own.

Supplies: Your Visual Journal. ( A blank book, sketchbook, altered book, or any book or journal you are currently working on. Size and paper stock is up to you. Working in a book is all important to the Visual Journaling process so please do not show up with random pieces of paper to bind later.)

Materials: You will need a big gluestick ( I recommend UHU brand). The following is optional, I have lots of supplies for you to use, but these materials will enhance your experience and you won‘t have to share. If you can’t get them, don’t worry! All Visual Journalist’s should have a set of rubber stamp letters. And I highly recommend Staz On stamp pads because we work so quickly. You will need at least two brush markers in different colors- black would be good. I have pencils you can use, but I highly recommend if you can get to an art store get an ebony pencil, or a 6B, or a graphite stick (not charcoal)- bring a writing pen- whatever kind is your favorite. You will need an Eraser. If you have one on the bottom of your pencil that will work- or you can just get one of those pink pearls. ( my favorite). I also recommend China Markers (in black, red, and white), or a red water color crayon, ( no oil sticks or water based oil sticks like portfolio- it needs to make a clear hard line- not smudgy).

Word: Lettering for the Extreme Journalist
Experience the Art of the letterform in this introductory class to Visual Journaling that puts the emphasis on written text as image. Learn to integrate text with imagery as we practice speech, language, and lettering as an artform as we first create mixed media backgrounds and then layer different text forms to stretch our techniques for verbal expression. Learn to develop patience and attention to every detail of the writing by considering that the text is as important to the page as the image itself. We will practice lettering using many different script creating tools such as pens, pencils, stick and ink, fine brush w/acrylic in ways you never considered and even how to give rubber stamped letters and alphabets your hand drawn touch. We will create many different layers with all things related to text including cutting up words from poetry books to create found poetry. Then utilizing Juliana’s Extreme journaling techniques, we will also learn to speak and write our own words, rather than quoting some other source, in order to weave the tale of our telling in the safe containers of our Visual Journals. These techniques will carry over into all other forms where text can be used as art and will take your art form to the next level.

Supply List: Your Visual Journal ( or two or three ), a big glue stick such as UHU or your favorite glue
Writing Tools: A thin stick at least 8 inches long (Just pick one up off the ground- break it- don‘t cut it- if you forget, you‘ll find plenty in my yard!), an ebony pencil, or 6 B, or graphite stick in any thickness ( not charcoal). Black ink, India ink, or Sumi ink. A high quality white ink or gel pen. Optional: White China marker, black sharpie (or other favorite permanent black marker) a couple brush markers in different colors, a gel pen or any other writing tool that can write on dark surfaces, and I recommend Staz on stamp pad in black.

Yin and Yang the Opposites Within

$15.00
Ying & Yang: the Opposites Within
Extreme Journalism w/ Juliana Coles

Class Description:
Explore the opposites within and learn to create balance and harmony in a Visual Journal of self expression. With the gentle guidance of Juliana Coles, become witness to the denied and rejected aspects of Self for compassion, forgiveness, growth, and wholeness. In this workshop we will experience ourselves through our other: the masculine/feminine split, hermit versus the socialite, crone/virgin, priest/magician, introvert/extrovert, inner self/outer self by combining art making assignments with written exercises. By making our experience tangible on the page, we are able to see it and begin the healing process through creative expression such as written character study and role playing by letting these splits speak through their own voices, and creating the marriage within, a harmonious outcome through collage, mixed media, and written expressions all in the safe container of our Extreme Visual Journals. For all levels of artistic experience and personal growth. We are all seekers.

You will need: A Blank Book, journal, sketchbook, or altered book as your visual journal ( or two or three !) and your favorite mixed media supplies/ mixed media tool kit. Bring your favorite glue, ( I like UHU, glue stick because it is fast!) scissors, some brushes for your paints, a rag or two, and a jar for water.
Necessary Supplies: All Visual Journalist’s should have a set of rubber stamp letters. And I highly recommend Staz On stamp pads because we work so quickly. You will need acrylic paint- any brand, any color in at least two colors, one light one & one dark. You will need at least two brush markers in different colors- black would be good. A graphite pencil- regular old number two is fine, but if you can get to an art store get an ebony pencil, or a 6B, or a graphite stick (not charcoal), a writing pen.
Collage: 1 magazine to cut up and one poetry book to cut up

Please email Juliana Coles with any questions or concerns: meandpete@msn.com

$15.00
These booklets are folded and stapled, black and white xerox on paper, with paper covers. Some booklets have cardstock covers with colored paper pages. Where indicated, covers, and covers only, are in full color. I am selling a process, not a product. The booklets are not the "thing", but rather house a virtual workshop using my process. The real "thing" is your own expression, guided by my assignments.

****

“The Prospector's Handbook:
Extreme Journalism w/Juliana Coles”

Prospectors, there’s gold in them there hills. So if you are ready to experience a meaningful encounter with the self, then come with me, you know who you are. Strap on your helmet, switch on your light, ‘cause we’re going down...deep into the center of our being for treasure beyond our imagination: that’s right -gold, jewels, and the occasional artifact of our existence. I’ll watch out for you as we travel through various journal writing assignments combined with art making exercises to dig deep to find ourselves and tell our unique story in the container of a mixed media book of self exploration. In this creative and expressive excavation, we’ll journey to our rich interior and return to tell the tales of Eureka! We’ve Found her in all this mess, this dirt, this garbage, this blackness like coal, this unentered darkness like the burnt remains of the Phoenix: this is where our real life wants to be resurrected and dug up. Not perfected, controlled, or prettified for some imagined audience that ain’t us or who we want to be, but raw, honest, gut-wrenching , pure and powerful- as is- without the need for embellishment or damn critic. Welcome, fellow miners, this underworld is my terrain: I work and create in these dark mines so frightening and yet so hauntingly beautiful. And as the Guide, I know where the hidden veins of gold are. Deep within. Isn’t it time to uncover your true being?
Let me take you down, I know you‘re ready for this descent. All participants will receive a Me & Pete Prospectors Extreme Journaling Handbook.

You will need: Your Visual Journal( or two or three !) and your favorite mixed media supplies. (suggestions following.) Bring your favorite glue, scissors, some brushes for your paints, a rag or two, and a jar for water.

Each student will be required to bring a “Mystery Bag.” A plastic grocery bag or smaller will do. Some suggestions are collage items, an old paintbrush that is all glued together, that orange paint you hate, stickers from when you were 14, Artist tools and supplies you no longer use or never liked, torn up pieces of your artwork that didn’t work out (no recognizable artwork, please) books to cut up, magazines, sticks, markers, 2 inch chewed up pencils, you get the picture-sort of a grab bag. We will be using these mystery bags as part of a mixed media warm up assignment. What, and how much to bring, is up to you. Don’t worry about trying to include nice things- we’re looking more for garbage items. We all ready have our own nice supplies-we want your cast offs to really make us think!

***
Suggested supply list: Please bring your favorite supplies as well as favorite collage items (use copies of things that are precious to you) and one or two magazines. Bring different kinds of things in your favorite colors. I like, Black and White acrylic, (its always good to have at least one light color and at least one dark color) cheapy craft paints in light blue and butter cream, brush markers in orange and hot pink, yellow black and red permanent markers, some colored pencils, a regular pencil, a sharpener, all kinds of tape, even a little stapler, India ink and walnut ink, red watercolor, a few water color crayons, my rubber stamp letters, poetry books to cut up, Staz-on stamp pads, .... just make sure you have a few wet items, and some dry items.

***

Please email Juliana Coles with any questions or concerns: meandpete@msn.com
check out my new website www.destinyvoyages.com

$15.00
“Private Investigations: Altered Book as Visual Journal”
(Extreme Journalism w/ Juliana Coles)
This cool project looks at journaling from a whole new perspective- it's all in third person!!!
no prior experience necessary/always new assignments but a certain level of self awareness will be necessary.

A murder has been committed: there has been a loss of soul.
Not for the Faint of Heart
What should happen if our journals fell into unscrupulous hands? I know, let’s disguise it. We’ll change the names and the events to protect the not-so-innocent by “altering” our story into a detective novel. It will be a Visual Journal disguised as a whodunit. This class will involve clues, dossiers, and intrigue through journal writing exercises utilizing third person accounts such as eye witnesses at the scene of the crime. We’ll alter cool old crime/mystery novels and whodunits with characters like Inspector Poirot. We’ll revisit Death on the Nile, or even comedy like “Murder by death” or “Clue“. Bring ephemeral evidence or Tony Hillerman desert images. Think The Thin Man, Myrna Loy, Charlie Chan, Inspector Holmes, or Nancy Drew as we attempt to solve this caper and act as our own witness. We’ll create headlines and exciting pages. We’ll come up with our specific investigation in class through various journaling exercises designed to probe the interior. Be prepared to do some inner detective work and self sleuthing. Consider old movie posters, the Orient Express, North by Northwest. This is no open and shut case, so you will not leave class with a finished product, but rather begin the process of an exciting new Visual Journal format that puts a twist on combining journal writing with art making by describing it in third person in an altered book. As Chief Inspector, I’ll guide you every step of the way.

Mixed Media Tool Kit: Please bring: Your favorite supplies or your traveling mixed media tool kit. You will definitely need the following: your favorite glue - I love big UHU gluesticks, scissors, some brushes for your paints, a rag or two, and a jar for water. All Visual Journalist’s should have a set of rubber stamp letters and numbers. And I highly recommend Staz On stamp pads because we work so quickly. You will need acrylic paint- any brand, any color in at least two colors, one light one & one dark. You will need at least two brush markers in different colors- black would be good. A graphite pencil- regular old number two is fine, but if you can get to an art store get an ebony pencil, or a 6B, or a graphite stick (not charcoal)- just make sure that you have some wet items and some dry items.
***
You will also need: Bring a book to alter. (I have some great old books with wonderful covers like “The Winding Staircase” but it could be any kind of book in any size that is interesting to you. Imagine where your mystery will take place- it could be India, a small New England town, the Old West), your favorite glue, scissors, some brushes for your paints, a rag or two, and a jar for water. Bring plenty of collage material from your favorite era: luggage tags, book pages, maps, and other evidence, film noir scenes from magazines, found photos or some copies of photos of yourself.
***
Please email Chief Inspector Juliana Coles if you have any concerns: meandpete@msn.com
check out my new website: www.destinyvoyages.com

This booklet has a full color cover- look at it - it's beautiful!
Mexico Ephmera included!

Welcome Distant Travelers: We begin this Pilgrimage with an exciting introduction to the Visual Journaling process by creating a Mexico Diario Postcard Book (a combination Visual Journal/artist book/mail art project) as a souvenir of the journey. Learn to create unique expressive postcards simply bound with binder clips(or your zutter, if you have one!) complete with Mexican postage, rubber stamped cancellations, to/from labels, and visual journaling assignments in the form of unsent letters like a wish you were here card from artist and fellow Journaler, Frida Kahlo. This wonderful book initiates us with a mixed media jam session designed to explore the rich interior of the self unencumbered by harsh critical voices from within. Once we are confident in using these exciting materials, freed from our limited beliefs of what an artist is, we will gently turn inward in our Visual Journal Diario through guided assignments that combine journal writing expressions with art making explorations. What better way to introduce yourself to your own personal mythology and discover how fun, easy and enriching the journey to the interior can be? Expand your creativity through process as opposed to product making. No prior art or writing experience necessary.

***

The real "thing" is your own expression, guided by my assignments.

****

“Diarist‘s Sectional: A Daily Aide”
Extreme Journalism in Three Sections, Diary Style

1.) Creating the Background “Sections” 2.)Constructing the “sectional”
3.) “Lost in Translation”
An Experimental Visual Journal in Artist Book Format

This exciting workshop is broken down into three sections:
Construction -Section 1: the morning will be spent creating the foundation for this experimental visual journal as artist book, and because this is my way, it will be far from exact. You will see your own hand in this book and be amazed to appreciate it. We first create backgrounds on thin cardstock ( that I provide) using my fast paced mixed media techniques. (bring rollers or big brushes if you have them for quick coverage. The larger boards are then cut into smaller “sectionals” to insert into the sleeves of our “found” book (or book to alter).
Construction- Section 2: Beginning with a found book (see suggestions below) We then cut out all the pages to create “sleeves” to insert our “sectionals“. Our newly created “sectionals” become pages that reveal multiple page layers in an exciting new format.
Visual Journalism -Section 3: “lost in translation” will assist us in entering selected journal writings (based on our homework- see below) into our books in a daily diary fashion. We will complete at least a weeks worth (7) of entries. (You will have many sections left to complete on your own, or you may decide that this is a project you would like to finish in a day and end it with the week but this is such a fun and interesting way of making daily entries, I think you‘ll be hooked!) Utilizing my Visual journaling techniques, we will work back and forth, from our journals into the textured backgrounds of our “sectional” by combining our daily writing with art making exercises designed to access inner information. This is the content portion and we will learn to push and pull- losing and rediscovering our images and stories as we concentrate on the greater whole, possibly losing that which we love. This is where we discover, in the mundane routine of our everyday lives, our own personal symbolism as we reveal how interesting and complicated we all are- I help uncover that! All Participants receive a
Me & Peteâ Diarist’s Sectional Handbook.
No prior experience necessary. For all levels.

***
Consulting the Oracle Retreat Kit

$35.00
These booklets are folded and stapled, black and white xerox on paper, with paper covers. Some booklets have cardstock covers with colored paper pages. Where indicated, covers, and covers only, are in full color. I am selling a process, not a product. The booklets are not the "thing", but rather house a virtual workshop using my process. The real "thing" is your own expression, guided by my assignments.

****

“Consulting the Oracle:
A Visual Journalist’s Archetypal Deck & Companion Guidebook”
A Self Expression Retreat with Juliana Coles

(Retreat Kit contains retreat Handbook- this is a two day retreat) See samples images to see how cards kit right in book!

Learn to become your own guide into unknown territory and develop intuition, intention, self dialogue, and uninhibited self expression. Creating a deck of cards with unique personal symbols and translating that information into a precious journal to develop the authentic voice can be a powerful tool for transformation: much like decoding the mysterious symbolism of our dreams for self awareness, initiation, development, and enrichment. With each day of this retreat we deepen and enrich the mystery within.

You are the Oracle that you seek.

In this weekend initiatory journey that focuses on process and self expression, we will create a unique “deck” of book sized cards using the radical mixed media techniques developed by Juliana Coles designed to access inner information and activate our inner Innocent, Orphan, Wanderer, Warrior, Martyr, and Magician who all live inside us and can either help us on our journey or hinder pilgrim‘s progress. Mixed media is the bridge or causeway that will allow us to activate these internal spirits, energies or archetypes that reside within. We will also alter a found book as our Companion Guidebook. This Guidebook, broken down into designated “chapters” for each card, will also house or contain our deck of cards! This is a unique aspect of the workshop: that our tools for expression and our cards for intention and focus are all in the same safe place. Then utilizing Juliana’s Visual Journaling techniques that combine free form journal writing exercises with image making assignments, we will learn to access the images and voices contained in our cards for further dialogue and expression in our new Companion Guidebook or Visual journal. We will begin this journey with an old library book, text book, or any other all ready existing book form that can be altered to become our Visual Journal of Archetypal Chapters. The first day will be spent creating the foundation of our books by making more space to protect the spine, setting up our chapters using all different kinds of techniques for “tabs” ( I love tabs and things that sneak out the sides!), creating the house for our deck of cards, and preparing our books for the exciting work we are about to embark on. This is a process and expression oriented class. No art or writing experience necessary to consult the oracle- for all levels.

You will need: a book to alter any size ( or two or three!) BUT THICKNESS of your book or spine must be at least 1 inch!!!!!!!!!! also keep in mind that the width and height of your book will be the W and H of your card., You will need some personal collage items and copies of photos to begin documenting your life, and your favorite mixed media supplies. (suggestions following.) Bring your favorite glue ( I recommend at least 3 large UHU glue sticks so we can work quickly!), scissors, an exacto or mat knife and a self healing cutting board- slim and easy to travel with!- you probably all ready have this in stuff in your traveling kit! some brushes for your paints, a rag or two. Bring your rubber stamp letters ( and numbers if you have them!) You may want some needles and thread or some other alternative method of attachment for tabs so you have plenty to experiment with. Bring some ribbon, string or leather straps to make ties or closures. See if you can come up with any ideas to make tabs or sections ( ideas might be plastic folders, plastic sleeves, little plastic tabs or colored stickers that attach to the side of paper, cardstock attached with eyelets and wire, found objects....)
***
Supply list: This is your weekend- bring what you love and we will make it work! Please bring your favorite supplies as well as collage items (use copies of things that are precious to you) , and I would like you to bring a few photos of your self that we can add to our collages - you might consider different sizes ( like blow some up and shrink some down- these do not have to be color- they can be black and white) but at least bring a photo or copy of you as a baby, and you as a young girl about 9-11, one or two magazines and the following supplies: at least two acrylic paint colors ( you do not need a whole set of anything)- one light & one dark- (the cheapy craft kind at Walmart are fine- Anita’s brand is the cheapest! )
Please bring at least 2 markers in any color-try two different kinds and thicknesses ( like a brush marker and a permanent-these will probably get ruined), one black permanent marker, 2 colored pencils( a light color like white or peach or light blue plus any vibrant color or your favorite color, a regular graphite pencil( a number 2 is fine or get yourself a graphite stick or an ebony or 6b), at least two stamp pads- a light color like white and a Staz on ( any color) the rest is up to you....bring some of your favorite things. Bring some things you’ve always wanted to try but never got around to it- like some precious paint or inks. Just make sure you have a few wet items, and some dry items to experiment with in a few different colors. You may want some rubber stamps in strange symbols or borders to decorate your cards. Whatever calls to you, bring it.
***
Please email me if you have any concerns or questions: meandpete@msn.com

A Woman's Book of Shadows Retreat

$50.00
This retreat kit was 65.00- it is now 50.00!
Happy Haunting!

Retreat Kit includes: 2 booklets ( I couldnt fit it ALL in one booklet!) and all necessary handouts and a few acoutrements for casting spells. Both Grimoire booklets are full cover covers with black and whie xerox pages. This kit itself is not the product, but will provide unique assignments developed by me to access your inner voices and powers and develop an internal dialogue necessary for healing and transformation. I am selling a process. What you get out of it is priceless. Welcome to your own world little ones. This kit is jam packed with four days and one evening session of extreme visual journaling- more than any other retreat kit - these booklets are bulging with everything you need to know to begin your Grimoire and develop your own spells for self enchantment. This kit has more information and more assignments than any retreat kit to date. This is truly a unique experience. Each booklet sets the stage for entering into the underworld, so get out your sage, light your candles, and dust off your cloak and pointed hat or fairy wings...I also designed these booklets with you at home in mind so they are more user friendly than my other retreat kits.

“A Woman‘s Book of Shadows:
A Grimoire for Soul Keeping, Secret Telling, and Self Enchantment”

Learn to create a book of Ancient Memory utilizing the Extreme Journalism techniques created by Juliana Coles
(no prior art or writing experience necessary. A certain amount of self awareness or the openness and willingness to venture inward will be expected as well as a playful spirit.)

Come closer, women: As summer edges into fall, shadows grow longer and the veil between this world and the other is thinnest. It is time to make the sacred journey we all knowingly wish for but put off time and time again... Let us gather our memories, words, and art around us for this magical and mystical journey of initiation where light and dark converge in the pages of our Book of Shadows to reveal the true self. Awaken as you discover your own guide into unknown territory where you will be called upon to develop intuition, intention, self dialogue, and self expression. Inspired by those who have gone before us, you will uncover personal signs and symbols in a precious journal where peacock feathers, rose petals, and the smoke from sacred fires speak knowingly from between its pages. With each day of this retreat we deepen and enrich the mystery within as we begin our Book of Shadows through the gentle guidance of Juliana Coles and her creative visual journaling techniques for insight, healing, and self bewitching. Words and thoughts, combined with unique imagery and intention, will create good spells, charms, cures; this is ancient medicine and will reveal a powerful force. Your grimoire, a personal instructional manual, handed down through the ages, woman to woman, is a record of your spiritual growth, and will unveil to you all you desire. You have chosen a unique and difficult path; the way of the wise woman, full of ancient ritual, secrets, and blessings. Welcome to this sisterhood.

You are the wisdom that you seek. Call upon the spirits and powerful energies that surround you.

This is more than a workshop, it is an event. Step out of the shadows. Come forward. Reveal your true self. It begins now for you in choosing your book, creating your altar, and gathering your supplies. I encourage you to do anything that sets the mood for you- or absolutely nothing. You can decorate supplies to make them seem old. You can even come dressed in a witch, sorceress, fairy, wood nymph, enchantress costume complete with magic wand and chalice- but remember, we are working in paint, so anything you wear please be willing to mess it up. You could even decorate your apron or create a magical cloak to work in. We are setting the stage for self expression, and creating a character and a magical world that is different from our own helps us to see ourselves from a different perspective, one we may be unfamiliar with. This other voice has much to teach us. Dressing up is an act of devotion and can create intention and focus. This is how we become that which we seek. This is how we let our child play. I’ll be there in character and I hope my coven will be too. Our assignments that combine words with images to access our inner voices will revolve around this theme of creating the grimoire. We will play with astrology, the tarot, power animals and familiars, and many other magick arts. So come out and play little ones. You are creating your first book of shadows.

What is a grimoire: A grimoire is defined as a book of spells and incantations used for calling forth spirits. It was meant as a purely instructional tool with practical applications: a “how to” manual for spells, secrets, and enchantments. Today’s grimoire is often handwritten by individuals for their own personal use and not meant for display or for sharing with others. The term grimoire is generic and may be used instead of the title of the actual book, which is often kept secret. The “Book of Shadows” is a Wiccan tradition. A sort of recipe book that included spells and incantations, but much more. A Book of Shadows may also contain dreams, poems, revelations, art, inspiration, mythology or anything else that can be considered a personal record of a spiritual journey, which is every woman’s path of initiation. A Book of Shadows, a unique book of self reflection, can resemble a diary or Visual Journal. And much like the visual journal, the grimoire or Book of Shadows will be our container for safe keeping - a soul house to protect our visions. This weekend initiatory journey that focuses on process and self expression, will begin by preparing the book that will become our grimoire.

Magical Tools:

- your grimoire. But how will I choose my Grimoire or Book of Shadows: Your grimoire is an ancient book with yellowed, fragile pages, soft brown around the edges. Some pages may be falling out; some may be missing. It will have the stains of ages and fingerprints of women long before us. It is dusty. It was found in an attic, in an old trunk, in a locked velvet box with precious crystals, a deck of strange cards, and other magical charms. Did you see “Practical Magic” with Sandra Bullock and Stockard Channing? Young witches learn from crones to help each other through life and to own their special gifts. It’s a great movie I recommend you watch to give you ideas to set the stage. In it, and it is worth seeing this movie just to view this book- I am forever haunted by it - is an unbelievable grimoire!) Choosing this book is up to you, and it will require your patience, heart and intuition. You should feel as if the book chooses you, for whatever reason, and it will be up to you to solve the problems this book challenges you with. So you find a book. You pick it up. It feels good in your hands. You turn it over. You almost want to bring it to your chest like an old friend, or a new one you instantly fall in love with. It whispers, “me, pick me.” But then you think twice. No, your pages are too thin, you aren’t big enough, too big, or too something or not enough of another: you don’t look old enough, I was looking for some velvet covered something that is quite different. You just aren’t right.

Don’t think twice. Respond intuitively. You will choose rightly. You can glue pages together to make them thicker. You can dye them with coffee or tea to age them, complete with coffee cup stains. You can rub an ochre or brown stamp pad around the edges to age them. You can take out signatures to make more room to protect the spine. You can glue on velvet and attach rivets and eyelets. You may choose black paper. You can alter a book, you can use one of those old velvet Victorian photo albums, you can buy a blank sketchbook, you can use a book you have all ready started, you can use any ole book around the house because it is last minute and you are in a hurry. You can choose to make your book. Do not worry about size or thickness. Do whatever feels right. Whatever you choose, we will make it work. This is part of the magick. There is a book out there that is calling you. Go find it.

Each student will be required to bring an “Alchemy Bag” for our incantations. A plastic grocery bag or smaller will do. (We will dump these in the center of our table and will use them to create spells.) Some suggestions are collage items, paper, an old paintbrush that is all glued together, that orange paint you hate, stickers from when you were 14, Artist tools and supplies you no longer use or never liked, glitter, torn up pieces of your artwork that didn’t work out (no recognizable artwork, please) books to cut up, magazines, office supplies, sticks, markers, 2 inch chewed up pencils, be sure to include some magical items and items from nature from where you live- flower petals, sticks, leaves, seeds...you get the picture-sort of a magical grab bag. We will be using these mystery bags as part of a mixed media warm up assignment. What, and how much to bring, is up to you. Don’t worry about trying to include nice things- don’t buy anything - we’re looking more for mysterious unwanted items. We all ready have our own nice supplies-we want your cast offs to really make us think!

Collage elements: half the fun of creating is the research and discovery: the gathering of items for casting our spells and telling our secrets. For collage you can grab pieces of paper or images that appeal to you for whatever reason. You can bring old photographs but keep in mind, anything you bring can get messed up, so you may want to bring copies of anything precious. You may want to bring magical and mystical items that will relate to the project such as tarot cards, tarot card paper, old letters, charms and milagros, ancient manuscripts, stained ribbons, faded fabrics, images of palms or hands for palm reading, astrology symbols, black cats, four leaf clovers, lucky horse shoes, gold foil items...

Mixed Media Supplies: Bring your favorite glue (I recommend at least 6 large UHU glue sticks so we can work quickly!- the little ones are a waste of time), scissors, an exacto or mat knife and a self healing cutting board- slim and easy to travel with!- you probably all ready have this stuff in your traveling art kit! You will need some brushes for your paints, and a rag or two. ( get yourself some good brushes- these do not have to be expensive but are better than a sponge brush or those one inch brushes that you can get at home depot- those are fine (sort of), but I highly recommend you purchase in addition to those: a quarter inch, a half inch, a one inch and a pointed detail brush at least 3/4 to 1 inch long. For writing instructions in our grimoire, please bring a calligraphy marker or pen and nib. I am not a calligrapher, I can’t teach you how to use these tools, so we are just going to play. A calligraphy marker comes in different colors and often has two sides, one thin and one thicker. It is flat sided so you can create old style lettering. Please bring your rubber stamp letters ( and numbers if you have them! and you may want to consider bringing an old time font or something that looks gothic or Victorian. Industrious? You can carve your own!) You may want some needles and thread, embroidery thread or some other alternative method of attachment. Try some ribbon, string or leather straps to make ties or closures. Bring one or two magazines and the following supplies: at least two acrylic paint colors ( you do not need a whole set of anything)- one light & one dark- (the cheapy craft kind are great - Anita’s brand is the cheapest! I prefer these kinds of paints for the work we do because they dry to a matte finish and are easier to write back into, however, they lack the vibrancy of good quality acrylics like Liquitex or Golden.) Please bring at least 2 markers in any color-try two different kinds and thicknesses ( like a brush marker and a permanent-these will probably get ruined), one black permanent marker, 2 colored pencils (a light color like white or peach or light blue plus any vibrant color or your favorite color, a regular graphite pencil (a number 2 is fine or get yourself a graphite stick or an ebony or 6b), at least two stamp pads- I prefer Staz on ( any color) because they dry so quickly, you might want some gel pens or any other material that can write on top of dark surfaces, and the rest is up to you....bring some of your favorite things. Bring some things you’ve always wanted to try but never got around to it- like some precious paint or inks. Just make sure you have a few wet items, and some dry items to experiment with in a few different colors. You may want some rubber stamps in strange symbols or borders to decorate your pages. Whatever calls to you, bring it.

Other Tools of the Craft

Personal Altar: Please bring a mini altar you can set before you on the work table. It can be something special you create with intention, or just a small plain box where you can keep at least three items of personal power and medicine. This can also be a pouch or medicine bag you hang from your neck or your belt. In my medicine bag I have a small brown owl I bought in Greece to represent my grandmother Helen who was a world traveler. I call on her for safe travels. The owl represents Athena and her justice and wisdom. The main item in my bag is so precious, I cannot reveal it’s name to anyone, not even you. It’s medicine is powerful, and meant only for me.

The light: please being a candle you can set before you. Lighting the candle helps create ritual. Choose something not too big and easy to travel with that preferably is in some kind of container for safety.

Please email me, the High Priestess Juliana, if you have any concerns or questions: meandpete@msn.com

Happy Haunting!

“A Book of the Night: Extreme Journalism “
(A tribute to the Dark side of Halloween and all things spooky & mysterious by
working on black pages in an Extreme Journal)
( no prior experience necessary but a certain level of self awareness is expected)
(Official Warning: This workshop can be emotionally intense and psychologically challenging for some. Please read the following description carefully. These courses are life altering and not recommended for those not interested in doing deep inner work.)

Welcome Princes of Darkness and Queens of the Underworld: it is October, the time when the veil between this world and the next is thinnest. Let us experiment with various techniques and textures to prepare black pages in a Book of the Night. This is a magical and wounded book of blackened pages and dark nights of the soul reaching out for the light by combining cryptic tales with potent imagery - valuable tools for self expression. In these frightfully beautiful and haunted pages, your Book will reflect a night of the dead, of spirits calling, of witchery, mysterious dark cloaked figures beneath a full moon, voodoo. Imagine a haunted gothic mansion beside an old cemetery where we are told of an old manuscript in a moth eaten velvet lined trunk: A Book of the Night. The raven, a messenger from the spirit world, has powerful information for you that can only be scribbled, painted, written, drawn or glued in the safety of these tender dark pages. Spirits of the dead and long forgotten tales of you begin to clang chains and moan and reach out for an authentic life. Bring your creatures of the night to light in the pages of your Extreme Journal. Like the Bride of Frankenstein, we’ll piece ourselves together from the long discarded remnants of self. You call that darkness? It’s beautiful.

Supply List:
(scroll down for detailed descriptions of items listed)
Book
Gluesticks ( 2 big ones)
scissors
Acrylic paints: one light, one dark, 1 black, 1 white.
brushes in at least three different thicknesses (crappy is fine but no sponge brushes)
1 quarter inch brush ( relative high quality)
rubberstamp letters ( any size) & stamp pad
2 brush markers in any color
1 black permanent marker
1 white poster paint marker
1 graphite pencil, 6B, Ebony, or graphite stick, no charcoal.
1 white pencil (get a good brand- not crayola)
1 pastel colored pencil (same)
1 metallic pencil ( gold, copper, silver)
1 gel pen any color (white, pastel or metallic)
black masking tape or artist tape in at least 1 inch thickness
1 white china marker
1 watercolor crayon in any color (no black)
theme related and random collage material

Book of The Night: Please find, make, or purchase a Blank Book, journal, sketchbook, handmade book, or altered book as your visual journal. The book, as container for self, is important to the process, so please do not come to class with separate pages to bind together later. ( Your book can be odd shaped- I have a book I made out of coffin shapes!) I found a great old Dracula book for kids at a library sale. It’s thin enough that I could almost finish the whole book in a workshop! I Love the cover! Thick old books that resemble a Witches Grimoire would be fun or you could bring a visual journal you are currently working on. Whatever feels right for you. We will prepare the pages in class. If you have time, feel free to get started by blackening or darkening your pages in any way you can think of. If you have any questions on choosing your book, please contact me.
Materials List Descriptions: Bring your favorite gluesticks, (glue sticks are great for the VJ process because they are not wet like a medium - we work quickly and need our pages to dry fast! UHU is my favorite) scissors, some brushes for your paints, a rag or two, and a jar for water. All Visual Journalist’s should have a set of rubber stamp letters. And I highly recommend Staz On stamp pads because we work so quickly ( black is good and some other light color to use on dark surfaces - the little “chalks” are good and kind of opaque - your favorite rubber stamp store will have the best info on what pads work on what surfaces!).) You will need acrylic paint- any brand, any color in at least two colors, one light one & one dark. You will need black acrylic (you might want to try other dark colors for texture: Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo blue, Payne‘s Grey, or any other dark color that seems interesting, even an Aliziron Crimson or similar color will be beautiful on black. Red is great too. Don’t bring or try everything: you’ll only end up bringing too much and you wont be able to use it all. Limit your self to 2 extra colors. You will need at least two brush markers in different colors. A graphite pencil- regular old number two is fine, but if you can get to an art store get an ebony pencil, or a 6B, or a graphite stick ( not charcoal.) You will need black masking tape or artist tape - 1 inch thickness will be best.
Darkside Materials: Most of these are optional- so choose whatever you have around. You will need items that will work on top of dark surfaces: gel pens, any color- pastels will show up best or metallics. Watercolor crayons will show up well, (portfolio or water based oil sticks will be too messy) china markers in any color, light colored pencils or metallics. You might want light or metallic stamp pads for your rubber stamps or letters, you might want metallic inks/paints.
Theme: It’s important to set the stage: our visual journal is like a theater- and the more we act out, the more we can discover. It’s a time to play: like little kids at Halloween. Brainstorm for images & themes by looking at spooky books or movies and brainstorming scary stuff like: the Changeling, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The 6th Sense, The Other, Harry Potter movies, brainstorm witches, mummy, wolfman, vampire, Bride of Frankenstein, fortune telling, gypsys, familiars, mediums, Haunted Houses, candlelight, Nightmare Before Christmas, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Edward ScissorsHands, even Grmm’s Fairy Tales. This will help you come up with collage material.
Collage: 1 magazine to cut up and one poetry book to cut up. Half the fun of creating is the research and collecting of images! You may want to gather images that feel potent to you or seem dark/shadowlike in nature. Stickers, gold stuff, silver tape, press on type in white- spooky stuff, magical stuff, stuff that will work on dark paper...
Each student will be required to bring an “Alchemy Bag.” A plastic grocery bag or smaller will do. What, and how much to bring, is up to you. Don’t worry about trying to include nice things- we’re looking more for garbage items. We all ready have our own nice supplies-we want your cast offs to really make us think!
Contact Juliana Coles at meandpete@msn.com with any questions or concerns.

The Haunted Art of Repetition

$10.00
It's Spooktacular!!!!!!!!
The Haunted Art of Repetition:
An Introduction to Visual Journalism with Juliana Coles

Repetition is necessary to artmaking and creativity- it allows us to create and develop a series, it assists us with composition, and greatly aids our experimentation process, which is the basis of all art making. This workshop will concentrate on repeating scary, haunted, or gothic black and white images for high impact, and learning how to work back into these black and white images for interesting affects that can be used with any other art form.

(supply list attached)

Haunted Art of Repetition Supply List:

Mixed Media Tool Kit
Visual Journal ( do not bring unbound sheets of paper) see www.destinyvoyages.com / discovering visual journaling/ for suggestions on choosing a book.
glue ( I prefer big UHU gluesticks because we work so quickly- get the big ones- don’t bother with the little ones.)
scissors
paint brushes ( no sponge brushes- get a few good ones- they don’t have to be expensive- but nice bristles that can make a clean line instead of a shaggy line- at least .25, .5 and .75 inch thick.)
rubber stamp letters
a drawing pencil like an ebony or 6B.
black ink or black acrylic paint
2 acrylic paints in any color, one light, one dark ( these can be cheapy craft paints like Anita’s)
markers: brush marker or sharpie in black, plus one other color marker
red water color crayon, china marker, or opaque paint.
stamp pad ( I prefer staz -on because we work so quickly in any color- black is always good.)

Collage: Bring some random collage items that appeal to you that have to do with this october season such as gothic, Halloween, Day of the dead, black cats, witchy, vampire, etc. (bring copies of things that are precious to you.)

Repetition: (please read carefully) Get to know your local copy center. Bring a bunch of BLACK AND WHITE interesting gothic, scary trees, cemeteries, or Halloween images- photos, portraits, close ups, patterns, even some of your own artwork- or small sections of your artwork- to your favorite copy center and play around with the self service machines. Get to know them. See what they can do. Test out the different functions. You may need a little help at first, and most copy stores are very happy to help answer all your copying questions. Change the settings: there are settings for just text, for just photo, and something in between. Some settings will give your images shadings or tones of grey- we don’t want that- we want the real black and white graphic images- high contrast. Take your images and blow them up. Shrink them down. I love doing this and always have a good time seeing what happens. Photos of people work really well. Make a series of repeating images- they can all be the same image- or images that look similar. We’ll need three batches of different repeating images. You’ll need at least 10 of each- some repeating the same size and some in in different sizes. Bring these stacks of images to class and be ready to cut, paste, and go crazy with layering materials! You will need one very large image that fits 8.5 x 11. People or animals will work best for this. It can be just a head.

for any questions or concerns email Juliana Coles of Pete and Repeat at meandpete@msn.com

“Extreme Journalism: Into the Shadowy Mist”
A Mixed Media Session with Juliana Coles
(min. 16/ max. 24) Instructor: Juliana Coles $55.00
Thursday, 6:30 - 9:30 pm (evening workshop)
no prior art or writing experience necessary/for all levels

(Official Warning: This workshop can be emotionally intense and psychologically challenging for some. Please read the following description carefully. These courses are life altering and not recommended for those not interested in doing deep inner work.)

This is my famous push/pull exercise that allows us to enter the shadowy mist of the pages of our Visual Journal. This is where we create seemingly unrelated layers in our journal pages through mixed media explorations and then push everything back or soften to develop a cohesive background. We then wipe away at this shadowy mist or dream world in order to discover and pull forward symbols from the unconscious to give them voice. Happy Halloween!

***

“Extreme Journalism: Into the Shadowy Mist”

no prior art or writing experience necessary/for all levels
(see sample journal page for layering effects.)

This is my famous push/pull exercise that allows us to enter the shadowy mist of the pages of our Visual Journal.

Collage: a text book or poetry book to cut up and at least one magazine. This piece is mounted on museum board and is attached with masking tape at the top. It's easily removeable to frame, but I kind a like how the tape looks.

Raw Creation

$18.00
These booklets are folded and stapled, black and white xerox on paper, with paper covers. Some booklets have cardstock covers with colored paper pages. Where indicated, covers, and covers only, are in full color. I am selling a process, not a product. The booklets are not the "thing", but rather house a virtual workshop using my process. The real "thing" is your own expression, guided by my assignments.

****

“Raw Creation: Visual Journaling with Juliana Coles”
For All levels, no experience necessary

Using a larger sized journal, blank book, sketchbook, or Found Book to alter, at least 8.5” x 11,” we are going to challenge and confront ourselves by using the radical techniques of Contemporary Expressionist, Juliana Coles. By combining Mixed Media experiments with Extreme Journaling exercises, we will learn to approach our work in new and exciting ways. We are going to shake things up by leaping outside our comfort zones into that abyss of the unknown. We will explode across the page with the furious speed of raw creation. We will push past our limiting boundaries as well as our beliefs about what is art and how we should make it as we smear paint, scratch, ooze, work, and rework, and then start all over again. And once in a while maybe screaming as we attack that page in our uncontrollable urge to discover that authentic voice and where she resides. These direct and intense images will NOT be collections of calming landscapes, inspiring quotes, lovely, well painted portraits, pointed hats, cute babies or traditional studies of still lifes; this work is the stuff of something deeper, darker, and meatier with gouges, scrapes, sweat, tears, and the scars of life. Learn to create with the dynamic spirit of your soul: the pathway is indirect, but quickly accessed through this frenzied, disorderly, in a hurry, in a mess, in a gut wrenching uncontrollable out of hand artistic experience.
Amen Sisters, we know who we are and we like it like this.

You will need: Your 8.5“ x 11“ (at least) Blank Book, journal, sketchbook, or altered book as your visual journal ( or two or three !) and your favorite mixed media supplies/ mixed media tool kit. Bring your favorite glue, ( I like UHU, glue stick because it is fast!) scissors, some brushes for your paints, a rag or two, and a jar for water. You will also need some large size brushes (cheap 2-3 inch brushes from home depot are fine) or rollers/brayers/sponges for extreme coverage.
What, and how much to bring, is up to you. Don’t worry about trying to include nice things- we’re looking more for garbage items. We all ready have our own nice supplies-we want your cast offs to really make us think!
Necessary Supplies: All Visual Journalist’s should have a set of rubber stamp letters and numbers.
Collage: 1 magazine to cut up and one poetry book to cut up
Preparations: If you have time, please gesso 2 pages. Experiment w/texture.

***

Please email Juliana Coles with any questions or concerns: meandpete@msn.com
