The Government of India appointed Mr RA Way, a very experienced Engineer, to investigate the problem. He took many engineers, geologists and other professional on his explorations. Among these travelers was Rowena Langstone, the winsome and adventurous 18 year old daughter of Geologist Ambrose Langstone.

The group traveled from From Ledo on the Dibrugarh-Sadiya Railway in the northeast corner of Assam, via the Hukong Valley, to a junction with the Mu Valley Railway in the neighbourhood of Mogaung. They called this the Hukoig Valley route.

Along the way Rowena explored the lands of the continent. She was extremely fascinated with the Hukong Valley region and spent a great deal of time investigating the Jadeite mines. In these mines she found amber, the fossilized resin of pine trees. Some of the amber nuggets had insects, pieces of moss and pine needles inside, having been trapped millions of years ago while the resin was still sticky.

While in the Hukong Valley Rowena met one of the Jadite miners and fell deeply in love. Rowena would slip away in the early morning to meet her love and they would sit at the edge of one of the deep mine entrances and talk about their past, present...and their future together. One morning, soon before the group was departing for their next destination, Rowena’s love presented her with a handful of nuggets of pure amber...golden globes that he had rubbed on fine rocks to make facets in the stone. He placed them in her hand and turned to face her…his foot slipped and he tumbled into the mine crying her name as he fell to his death.

Rowena mourned deeply. She returned to England heartbroken....only memories and a few hand-hewn nuggets of amber as a testament of her love. Decades later the amber jewels were found deep in a trunk, nestled in a linen cloth and tied with a frayed brown hat ribbon...memories of an age gone by.

These amber nuggets* were saved. A few of them, along with the ribbon, were used to accent a pith helmet that now graces the head of a fellow steampunk adventurer.

Some of these amber nuggets now accent this gorgeous 7" long hatpin. Slip it in a hat or use it as a stickpin. A nugget of the faceted amber dangles from the clutch..protecting the end that is sharp enough for defense!

*(Although a lovely but sad story, these nuggets are not real amber. They are vintage plastic beads)

The first hat of the industrial age, the bowler was designed in 1850 by the Bowler family of Southwark specifically for a customer of England's pre-eminent hatmaker, Lock's of St. James's. William Coke needed a practical, simple, rigid, durable hat to protect his gamekeeper's head; a hat that would stand up to the most demanding of conditions, including riding in pursuit of poachers. Coke tested the hat's prototype by standing on its crown in Lock's showroom. Twice. It passed the test. (Caution: Those were different times - don't try this at home.) The bowler was quickly adopted as sporting attire by the gentry and, soon after, became the headgear of choice across the entire social spectrum. It was particularly popular in the late 19th century with the crowd at the Derby horse race at Epsom Downs. Americans took to calling the hat the "derby". The hat of bankers, workers and clowns, the bowler is one of the most popular and successful hats ever produced.
