Cinque Terre - Original Mixed Media Painting

The Cinque Terre is a region on the Ligurian coast of Italy featuring five seaside villages at the foot of terraced hills that fall steeply toward the sea. Cinque means five and terre means lands. These fishing villages offer the artist or photographer much inspiration around every corner. It is a wonderful place to enjoy the fabulous vistas by hiking amongst the vineyards and olive groves above the villages.

For this 8 x 10 inch (20.32 x 25.4 cm) matted collage piece, I have printed a photograph that I took in one of these quaint little spots in sepia and painted it with watercolor. The background is collaged with old postcards and journal pages and enhanced with wax and paint.

Il Dottore - Original Mixed Media Artwork

Masks were commonly worn by persons socializing in Venice in the evenings. People wished to hide their identities in a society that was governed by strict social rules.

The Doctor, or "Dottore," is a Commedia dell'Arte character. He is a Bolognese University trained doctor who is learned and respected by others, but who, in reality, is foolish, ill-educated as seen by his mangling of the language, and prone to pointless, learned debates while his patients die. He is known by many names, including Graziano and Balanzone, but the character is always the same.

This collage is a page from one of my travel journals done while in Venice this summer. Because I take minimal supplies with me the primary media is watercolor and pencil. I did the drawing of Dottore Balanzone in pencil. This is an original signed piece that measures 11 x 14 inches (27.94 x 35.56 cm) and is double matted.

Beetle Study No.3 - Original Mixed Media Painting

Ever since I was a little girl I have always loved bugs. Most of my friends were afraid of them or wanted to kill them, but not me. I picked them up and let them ride on my shoulder - being very careful not to harm them. The Beetle Study series is in honor of all of those beetles who let me play with them when I was young. :)

This 7 x 7 inch (17.78 x 17.78 cm) mixed media painting was created using a variety of techniques. I used Golden gel mediums and molding paste, Golden acrylic paint, collage papers, drawing, contact paper, and pastels on a 7 x 7 inch piece of Crescent Illustration Board. It is an unframed and unmatted piece of artwork so that you may choose exactly what you want. It is one of a series of three, but can also stand alone.

Laundry Day - Original Mixed Media Collage

This is an original mixed media collage using acrylic and ink on illustration board. I used one of the photographs I took on a recent trip to Italy of a charming little building with the days’ wash set out to dry. The laundry was hand colored using pigment ink. Postage stamps, magazine collage and old maps were used to create the background of this piece. As a finishing touch I blended small amounts of encaustic wax and handwritten pages from my journals.

Vacant - Original Mixed Media Encaustic Painting

Vacant is an original encaustic painting on mat board. The "sheen" created on the surface is achieved by the use of paint that is a combination of beeswax, damar resin and pigment. The colors are radiant and saturated reds, yellow ochre, mossy green, and burt sienna. The piece has a great deal of texture that is almost impossible to see in photographs.

"Vacant" is double matted with a wide canvas textured ivory mat and a gray-brown smaller inside mat. Matted, it measures 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm) - a fairly standard size. The artwork itself is 4 x 6 inches (10.2 x 15.2 cm).

Palatial - Original Mixed Media Painting

This original 10x10x2" (25.4x25.4x5.08 cm.) painting/collage was done on a museum wrapped canvas. I covered the entire canvas with a few photos from a magazine. I then painted over the collaged material with acrylic paint. The words that I printed are from a song from the musical "Spring Awakening."

There is a sturdy wire hanger on the back and it weighs 1.25 lbs. (20 oz.).

Photograph #3 shows the thickness and images collaged onto the side of the canvas. Photograph #5 shows the corner.

The Wallflower - Original Encaustic Painting

These flowers may live on a wall, but they will not pass up a dance.

This original 12x12 inch encaustic painting is full of life, color, and layers. Encaustic painting is simply painting with beeswax. Some of the wax has pigment, while some is the natural yellowy color of beeswax.

To paint with the wax, I melted the color blocks onto a low heat iron and an Encaustic Art stylus. The painting is layered with acrylic paint, collage, and wax. All of this layering was done on a 12x12 gallery-wrapped canvas. The sides of the canvas were painted with rich golds and yellow ochre.

The Church or Basilica of San Vitale— styled an "ecclesiastical basilica" in the Roman Catholic Church, though it is not of architectural basilica form— is the most famous monument of Ravenna, Italy and is one of the most important examples of Byzantine Art and architecture in western Europe.

Though I didn't have San Vitale in mind while painting this painting, after I completed it, I realized what I had painted: the Byzantine mosaics in the church of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy.

This 8 x 10 inch (20.32 x 25.4 cm) mixed media painting was done on a canvas. I used acrylic paint, collage, paper, pen and ink, and crayon to achieve its layered look.

This handmade art quilt bag is as sassy as it is fun. From the brightly colored spin on the log cabin quilt pattern to the peppermint striped black and white fabric strips, you’ll turn some heads when you carry this tote. The combination of bright solids, prints, and snazzy polka dots make up the collage of bright colors.
The 10.5 x 11 inch (26.7 x 27.9cm) is a great size for a handbag, but it is even roomy enough for a tote. It will be the envy of your knitting buddies this fall when you take it to your next knitting session with the girls. The strap has a black and white checked ruched detail where it connects to the top of the bag. The weight used to hold the bag closed, doubles as an embellishment. It is a neat red ceramic donut attached to a black soustache braid ribbon. A unique black and white handmade glass bead with fiber trims the top, and really makes a statement. I have added buttons from my vintage treasures, and lots of decorative stitches to make this a real knockout. Dive into the cool blues and greens in this 11 x 14 inch (27.94 x 35.56 cm) original painting. Soft hues make this study reminiscent of summer days spent floating on ocean waves.

I used many different techniques to achieve the misty, layered landscape. The underpainting was done on masonite board in watercolor and acrylic paints and combined with collage. I sprayed acrylic inks through a grid to achieve many of the patterns. The shadows are highlighted with pastels. This is an unmatted piece that can easily be framed as is or matted with glass.

Indian Sunrise - Original Mixed Media Painting

I would love to visit India and that is what inspired this 7 x 7 inch (17.78 x 17.78 cm) piece.

In this small painting, I achieved the dimensionl surface with many different types of gel mediums. In one of the detailed views you can see a very unique product made by Liquitex(small granular beads)and then I highlighted them with gold. The result was a surface very much like tarnished metal. Other items used were graphite pencil, oil pastels, and fluid acrylics. This painting has been listed before, and I retook the photos, and these photos are more accurate in color. It is a combination of soft greens, crimson, and many shades of teal. There is a small amount of gold dry brushed over the textured areas for highlights. The surface looks three dimensional and has a textured "layered" look.

This artwork is a collage of my handwritten journaling, fashion pattern tissue, and pages from a technical workbook. Soft yellows, yellow ochre , bright crimson and hunter green make up the color scheme. The charts and graphs from the book pages suggested a Mondrian like composistion. I am drawn to his geometric images and pure clean color. This is an actual 5.5 x 8 inches (13.97 x 20.32 cm) page fom my daily art journals that has been matted and sleeved and would fit nicely into a standard 8 X 10 inches (20.32 x 25.4 cm) frame.

This art quilt reminds me of an aerial view of a very colorful and rainy city.

This 12 x 12 inch (30.48 x 30.48 cm) art quilt was stretched over artist stretcher bars so that it is ready to hang. To create this art quilt, I used handpainted fabric and colored thread with decorative embroidery.

Mariposa - Art Quilt

This fiber art piece is a hand painted whole cloth quilt. The background is textured canvas fabric stretched over an 8” x 10” (20.3cm x 25.4cm) stretcher frame. The fabric is painted on dampened unstretched fabric. The shapes and designs art then isolated and enhanced with machine and hand embroidery. I have used different types of colored thread including metallic. When the embellishment is complete, the quilt is stretched over the frame and stapled to the backside of the stretcher. A traditional wire hanger attached to the back for hanging.

The warm color palette consists of oranges, yellows, burnt sienna and gold. I have added just a touch of lime green and stark black for a surprise element. There are heavy areas of free motion stitching to add dimension to the surface. This is a very textural piece because of the jacquard canvas used for the background, and the heavy application of paint in some areas.

This is an original signed piece of artwork.

Unraveled - Art Quilt

I did this quilt for the "Make It University! True Colors Quilt Challenge" offered by Cloth, Paper, Scissors Magazine.

It was one of the quilts chosen to be shown at the International Quilt Festival/Spring in Chicago, April 11-13, 2008. There were 30 winners out of the 200+ entries. These art quilts were shown at the Long Beach, CA Quilt Festival, July 25-27 and the Houston International Festival October 30 of 2008.
I combined many different pieces of hand dyed muslin, cheesecloth and raw edged cotton fabrics for this collage. The shipping tag was painted with walnut ink and gesso, and contains some of my handwritten calligraphy. The collage items used include postage stamps, paper I made, vintage white buttons, and ribbons. The finished quilt is stitched together and can be hung by the three-inch sleeve sewn to the back. The size of this quilt is 12 x 12 (30.5 x 30.5)

This is an original encaustic wax painting. I have collaged handmade paper, foil paper and book pages to a mat board support. This mixed media piece has areas where the wax is thick and richly textured. The smooth areas are buffed to a high sheen to contrast with the roughness of the texture. I have carved line work into the surface for dimension and blended oil sticks into the incised lines. The palette I used is a deep bluish green, orange black, white and a small touch of beige. The artwork is matted in a simple off white hue with a black liner. The mat has been cut heavier on the bottom than the top and sides. This gives it a contemporary museum look .The size is 11 X 14 (27.9 x 35.6) finished size and will fit nicely in a ready made black standard frame
