I holidayed in Clacton- on -sea, once, as a child, and this cake reminds me of the wonder of the beachfront at an English seaside resort.
original ink and watercolour painting on heavyweight watercolour paper, this measures 18.5cm x 7.5 cm. It has a narrow paper border around it.

My scanner fails to do justice to watercolours - you can be sure that the original will look far 'zingier' (is that a word?) than the image on your monitor!

THE ROGUE

Nest building time, and this crow fancies a strand of horse hair to line his, much to the annoyance of the appaloosa.
When I was a kid, a neighbour rescued injured birds, and he once had a Raven with a broken wing. Once it was mended, the Raven stayed around for a summer, and spent a lot of his time stalking the ponies in the field next door. Always on foot, he would sidle up behind them, or stomp along after them, with a murderous look in his eye. He tried very hard to keep directly behind them, out of their line of sight, but they knew he was doing it and were decidedly unnerved by the behaviour. I always wondered what exactly the Raven was thinking as it did this.

This is an illustration from the rhyme that we used to chant when we were kids, based on the number of magpies seen.

Our version went as follows, though I expect everyone has their own version of this!

One for Sorrow,
Two for Joy,
Three for a Girl and Four for a boy.
Five for Silver, Six for Gold,
Seven for a secret not to be told.

This is painted on Heavy Langton Board ( about 2mm thick) using Indian Ink and watercolour.
