This design is titled "Action in the Riffles" It is my view of the explosive action which is constantly occuring in the riffles of the river or stream...oxygen churning into the water as fish get an oxygen rush while eating the emerging aquatic insects. I carved the drawing into a piece of white pine from which the image was printed.

This 100% organic cotton T-shirt is a rich dark green with a pale green silkscreened image of Action in the Riffles.
The shirt is a made by Anvil. It is preshrunk, so you will not find them to shrink at all --or not detectable to my senses. The organic cotton is a color called River Green--how appropriate! I wear mine a lot and really love it. I think you will too.

Specify if you would like a size SMALL or MEDIUM. I just ran out of LARGE and X-LARGE! Convo me if you want an XX-Large. I'd do a special listing for you. XXL's cost $22 plus p&h. Exact same design as pictured.

Hops Linocut Silkscreened Shirt for beer lover or homebrewer 100 percent cotton

This design is titled "Hops." I grow hops at home because I am a homebrewer and they are the most beautiful plant to look at. The vine climbs to my deck then to the deck roof and provide great shade as well as hops to supplement my brewing. Anyway... I carved the image into a linoleum block which I hand printed onto the surface of printing paper. From the paper I silkscreened the image in black ink on the surface of a pale green cotton T-shirt made by GILDAN "Ultra Cotton". Even though it is silkscreened, it has the look of a hand-printed shirt (which I also do a lot of).

The 100 percent cotton shirt is not preshrunk, so you may experience a slight shrinking upon washing and drying--not major.

I currently have this design in this color shirt with black ink in Mens SMALL and MEDIUM. I also have an ample supply of the Hops shirts in all sizes in PINE GREEN (except XL) and SAND with a dark green ink. (See 2nd photo)

AND NEW! Hops shirts in a "Ladies Style" t-shirt in the color: PISTACCHIO with dark green ink. They look great, women.

Longsleeve Ladies Crew Neck shirt Hand-Printed with my design of the Great Blue Heron--a 2-block linocut print on very soft cotton by Alternative Apparel in time for the Holidays

Super-Comfortable. This shirt was printed directly from the blocks I carved. First I machine wash and dry the shirt to remove all sizing. Then I ink the backgound color block with a blend of greens, yellows, blue, white and a touch of red with a rubber brayer (roller), then lay the inked block face-down on the shirt. I press down, but my weight does not make a clear impression, so I very carefully flip the shirt and block so the block is under the shirt, then I burnish the back of the shirt with a wooden spoon. I make sure that every bit is thoroughly rubbed. Then I flip the block and shirt over again, and remove the block. Voila! After letting it dry for 24 hours, I do the same process with the block carved with the heron's detail in black ink. The image is permanently on the fabric. No two shirts are exactly alike.

Available on the "Iris" (purple) colored shirt:
1 Small, 1 medium, 1 large, and 1 X-Large. The shirt is designed to be form-fitting. The model shown is wearing a medium.

Also shown is a different style of shirt by Comfort Colors which is not so form-fitting and a great comfy shisrt to wear casually or anytime you like. I have two at the moment in Lagoon Blue: 1 Small and 1 Large.

Take your pick of any of these shisrts and place your order. Tell me what color and what size. If you have any questions, just ask. I'm a human on the computer and in my studio...no shipping department or secretary...so I'm very in touch with my shop.

Suitable for framing this signed and number print is for the Dog-lover with a sense of humor, lovers of anything Celtic, and people who like to smile art their art.
“Knotty Dogs” was designed and carved in a linoleum block by me, Melinda Byrd.

The inspiration came from my facination with Celtic knots and my love of dogs--especially labs. These particular dogs were actually sleeping on the white kitchen floor when the inspiration for the design hit me. The breed could also be lots of other dogs.

The image is 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" in jet black ink on a soft white Rives BFK lightweight printing paper. It will come on a sturdy backboard in a protective clear bag sleeve.

I am a printer who carves in linoleum and wood to create art which I print onto paper and shirts. This is a silkscreened image of my HOPS linocut and it is a "ladies" cut t-shirt for a great fit for women.

Happy Holidays! I just reduced the price from $24 to $15 for the three-color silkscreened image on organic natural cotton!

This is a T-shirt which I designed and carved the image for. Actually it is the result of two seperate blocks carved: One with the background shades of blue and green, the other carved with the details which are printed in black. I had the image silk-screened with three colors onto the 100% organic cotton T-shirt. The shirt color is a natural, unbleached white. The silk-screening is actually three different colors: aqua-blue, grassy green, and jet black.

It is available in the Ladies style shirt (with shorter sleeves and a more open neck than the men's style) Specify Small, Medium, Large, or X-Large when you order. Sizes run true to traditional sizes--not particularly over-sized.

Linocut THREE FIREFLIES Original Print by Melinda Byrd

I just designed this one this summer--and it's a fun one. Look closely. This piece has some imagination, but also is a fairly accurate depiction of the rising fireflies from the grasses at dusk.

This is an artist proof printed on Rives BFK Lightweight print paper with Black oil ink. I print by hand using a wooden spoon to burnish the image onto the surface of the paper. I clean all my printing tools with a soy-based solvent and Simple Green.

I have also gotten this image silkscreen pinted on shirts which I welcome you to look in my Byrdcall etsy shop.

But this hand-printed image on paper deserves framing and hanging in a special spot in your home. Black and white linocuts and woodcuts look great matted and framed in black and white and hung on your most colorful walls in your home. Very classy. The edition number signed at the bottom will be different from the one pictured, but all all excellent quality prints--I guarantee!

This is one of the first linocut I carved in recent years. I love Thoreau and what he stood for. The message of simplifying is more pertinent today than ever. I carved HDT's image into a linoleum block which I hand printed onto the surface of printing paper. From the paper I silkscreened the image onto three different color T-shirts made by Gildan. 100% cotton. A very true-to-size style shirt.

This handpainted Martini Glass is an exceptional bargain for anyone who love their Maine Coon Cat or tabby tiger. It is painted with opaque glass paints with excellent durability. (I've tested my glasses rigorously including weekly washings in the dishwasher with great success.) The paints are protected with two coats of a gloss glass finish.

Because of a martini glass's shape, I'd recommend handwashing so it doesn't tip over in the dish washer and break. You can be happy knowing the dishwasher won't effect the paint...though dish washers can be abrasive on all your glassware FYI.

I paint cat portraits so they are fun to look at from the outside of the glass as well as the inside of the glass. Do you notice something different about the cat's eyes from the photos of the inside and the outside of the glass?

This would make a great gift for anyone who has a cat that looks like this one. If you have the perfect person for usch a gift, but they have a differnet cat, just convo me about doing a custom portrait on a martini glass (or wine glass--or pint glass) I charge $5 more for a custom portrait.

The bag is from e-conscious and is 100% recycled cotton...a hardy bag with straps long enough to hang comfortably on your shoulder, or to hold comfortably in your hand (full of books or groceries) and it won't drag on the ground.

The image is not silkscreened. It is a handcarved design of my own. The linoleum block is carved with the design I call "Three Cautious Crows." It is hand-burnished into the tote fibers with a wooden spoon. I have been printing with the same ink on cotton T-shirts for about 9 years with excellent results.

Honeybee Handpainted Canvas Barrette--original design and creation

This is a beekeeper's conversation piece to let folks know that you don't mind a bee in your hair. It is a unique barrette designed and handpainted by me. It is made from the heavy canvas I use in making floorcloths, and I refuse to waste perfectly good pieces.

So I have created these barrettes which I have trial proofed for over a year to be sure they function as they should. I am very pleased with the outcome, and now I am jumping in to create. Keep watching as I add more as the weeks go by.

Just like my floorcloths, the canvas is primed many times with primer, then sanded, hand-painted, signed on the back, and coated with many coats of waterbased urethane. The 2" hair clip is added with an excellent hot glue. The honeybee measures 3" from antennae to tip of abdomen. See photos. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.

This honeybee will be packaged in a fiberfilled gift box and mailed in a padded mailer.

I take great pride in producing the highest quality in hand-painted glassware. I’ve dishwasher-tested my glasses for several years with no problems. For guaranteed long-life to the painting on your glasses, I recommend hand washing, but the dishwasher will generally not harm them unless your detergent is abrasive. Dishwashing in general is rough on all your glassware, so hand-washing will guarantee the same look to the glass for many, many years.

Each painting is original, and like no other. I sometimes make similar glasses as sets, but I have never painted two glasses exactly like each other. With a background in biology and scientific illustration, you’ll find my subjects tend to be more realistic than caricatures. I paint so that the image is visually pleasing from the interior as well as the exterior of the glass – reverse painting in action. It is a challenging and time-consuming process, but I feel you should enjoy the view of your glass from the inside as you sip as well as the outside. In preparing these glasses, four coats of primer, paint, and gloss finish were applied… no short cuts!

This is one of my most recent linocuts. I carved it for a Fireflies and Fiddlers Fest nearby.

As a homebrewer, I grow some of the hops I use in brewing my favorite beers. The grace and beauty of the hops vine is appreciated by beer enthusiast and gardener. Using my own Cascade vines as models, I drew this hops design, transferred it to a block of linoleum, then handcarved the block.

I designed and carved the image into a block of linoleum, and hand-printed--burnished the inked surface--onto the 100% Cotton American Apparel fabric. I wash the garment before printing in order to rinse away the sizing.

This is one of the first linocut I carved in recent years. I love Thoreau and what he stood for. The message of simplifying is more pertinent today than ever. I carved HDT's image into a linoleum block which I hand printed onto the surface of printing paper. From the paper I silkscreened the image onto three different color LONG-SLEEVED shirts. 100% cotton. A very true-to-size style shirt.

The fun thing about this shirt is the nice people you meet when you wear it. People who know Thoreau always have a favorite quote to share with you. "Simplify" can become your daily mantra as you wear this shirt.

The cotton shirt is preshrunk, so you will not find it to shrink at all -- or not detectable to my senses. You can choose the color you like best: Texas Orange, Smoke Gray, or Brick. Wearing this long sleeved shirt is akin to wearing a very light-weight sweatshirt and much more flattering.

Here are the sizes and colors currently available:

I hesitate to use the word "print" sometimes because it can conjure up the image of something photocopied. Not the case with this print. This is an ORIGINAL hand-rubbed print.

The BROOKIE IN COLOR was designed by me and carved into a 6" x 12" piece of linoleum. When hand-print onto paper using a wooden spoon as I do, it is a stunning black and white image. ($65) When I made this limited edition, I sat and meticulously watercolor painted the Brookie until it became alive with color. There are only 25 of this limited edition.

The "Cupcake" design I originally carved for hand-printing on my baby onesies (see listing), but so many women have requested that I print it for them on their shirts. Dragonfly and Arrowleaf a 2-color linocut on quality print paper

This was an interesting experiment. I had a one-color linocut (carving in linoleum for printing) of the dragonfly; then I decided to try to make a two color print by carving another block. This is a challenging print. It is printed with two blocks: first the brighter leaf-green, then after that dried, I stenciled the dragonfly wings with an irridescent transparent ink. When that dried I printed the darker shade of blue over it all. I was experimenting with colors and the technique resulting in a small edition of proofs.

The Woolie is one of my very first acrylic paintings. After I quit a great job to spend my life as an artist, I came across this very cool ewe at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. She let me scratch her head and neck. I really liked her and I think she liked me. I took a parting photo of her, but the photo didn't do justice--so I painted her with the colors of the world. Yet it has a very real look of a sheep with attitude.

This print is on a matte finish archival quality paper which is 13" x 19". The actual image size is 12.5" x 15.5". If you would like a smaller print, I also have it listed in the 8 1/2" x 11" print size for $25. The archival inks on archival paper guaranteed to maintain its appearance for 100-200 years. During a vacation in Hawaii I was totally intrigued by the palm trees. This particular one was begging to have its photo taken at the Kauai airport. From that photo, I designed and carved this image in red oak. (Very hard and grainy wood--can you see the grains?) Cool.

This is one of my first woodcuts, and you may recognize what a challenging carving this was due to the circular cuts which tend to splinter if you are not careful. I was very careful. Riffles are the bubbly part of the stream or river where the rocks help churn the fresh oxygen into the water which is much appreciated by the critters...read on:

Riffles are where you find the trout enjoying the oxygenated waters bringing dizzy insects downstream. Having grown up in Concord, Massachusetts, learning to swim in Walden Pond, and attending Thoreau School, I believe H. D. Thoreau has been in my blood since childhood. I went on to study biology, earth sciences, and worked as a naturalist for years. So this image comes honest!

I designed the image with the word: simplify to remind us of the words and life of Thoreau. I also believe as many do that if we simplify our lives, we will be happier people. Do you believe that?

I am mainly a woodcut and linocut artist. This is a hand-printed image rubbed directly from my carved poplar wood block to the paper with a wooden spoon. (really!) I sketch at outdoor concerts to increase my enjoyment of the experience. This is from a sketch I did of one of my favorite blues musicians, John Mooney. (Check him out.)

The paper is a rich gold pH neutral Mulberry from Thailand. It measures about 8 1/2" x 11". The ink is a water soluble black relief ink. This print is signed and numbered--It is #4 out of a series of 50 and there will never be another.

Notice I also have two other color possibilities which you could select from for the same price: a gold ink on dark purple paper and a black ink on soft white paper. If you don't specify, I'll assume you want the gold one that is featured here.

This pin is constructed of recycled floorcloth scraps made into a sturdy, but lightweight pin. It is handpainted with acrylic paint and given a couple of coats of water-base polyurethane. A pin-back is attached on the back.
It measure 1 5/8" square.

These pins are fun to wear since your are wearing a durable form of art. They will bighten up and add interest to any outfit. Havasu Fall is located deep within the Grand Canyon. Few people venture all the way there. But whether or not you've been there, this pin can give you the daily inspiration to go one step beyond the usual today! Expect the unexpected and have fun.

Pin will be mailind in a black gift box with white fiberpad. There is no other pin--to my knowledge-anything like this one. It is not one of many. It is an inspiration I followed through on in 2006.
