Where I live, Ashland, OR, we don't get much snow. Last month we had a glorious two weeks of heavy cold snow that stayed around. I painted several paintings looking out the window of my studio. It was far too cold to actually go outside, and I never work from photographs. Consequently, my intent was to have these pieces look like views from a window.

This painting is all about looking up at the sky. It was painted in two parts to heighten the feeling of looking out a window.

Part of my new Affordable Oils series, a series of small original oils, painted on sized and gessoed illustration board. Illustration board is a stiff paper a little less than an eighth of an inch thick. They're painted in a quick, fresh, painterly manner.

Each of the two paintings measure 5" x 8" and are professionially framed with a narrow pecan gallery frame. They are currently being carefully stored in my studio and can be shipped immediately.

Gray day, depressing place. I painted this landscape during the winter from the front seat of my car where it was warm. I think there is a little poetry in the powerlines.

I gathered together Garden Tomatoes, a cigar box and toy alligator. I with natural light, and used a classical limited palette. It conjures up a family run Italian restaurant in Florida for me.

It was a really foggy day at Harris Beach in Oregon, I was determined to paint anyway. When I was done and got the painting into sunlight, I realized just how gray the day had been. Although I used no black in the painting, it looks completly colorless. Sometimes that's just the thing, though. What a good picture for favorite reading place.

This is a typical farm in Southern Oregon, dilapidated with an RV or old trailer. I grew up on a farm like this. It's fairly dry here, we have 19 inches of annual rainfall. However, this painting was made in October, so our winters are very mild.

The road in this painting is called Dead Indian Memorial Road. Seriously. It traverses the mountains and it was politically incorrectly called Dead Indian for years then, in the 1990's it was changed to Dead Indian Memorial Road and it's kind of funny to see all those letters on the small green road sign. I wonder why they didn't just change the name? Why not Memorial Rd? Or Cascade Mountain Road?

Pear Packing Plant

The Rogue Valley, (where I live in Southern Oregon) is an ideal pear growing region. However, in the last 20 years the valley has turned toward building houses and started tearing out pear orchards and leaving the packing facilities to deteriorate. Progress. The foreground is an old orchard that was cut down and then left, so the gray piles are dead branches and the dusty green bushes are shoots coming up out of the pear stumps. In the distance is an old pear packing plant and Grizzly Peak of the Cascades is the mountain.
