One afternoon I was browsing the local Habitat For Humanity Re-Store, which sells a wide variety of second-hand items for the home, from appliances to furniture to accessories, and in the middle of a dining table was a huge basket of cloth napkins. I chose a handful of the cotton ones, took them home, and got busy, and here, just in time for the holidays, is one of the results!

This pair began as 2 matching solid tan napkins with an open weave, very linen-like, 18 inches (46cm) square. I tied them TOGETHER with a leaf outline and applied green dye inside the leaf and a border of brown outside. Tying and dyeing them together like this produces the closest thing to "identical" you're ever likely to find in tie-dye, so it makes a perfect set!

The dye reacts chemically with the fibers of the fabric and won't bleed in your laundry or fade away! These beautiful napkins can be co-ordinated with the other mandala napkins listed here, but it also make lovely table decorations, even striking altar cloths. A first-rate thrift shop find, this all-cotton Chico's Size 1 (Approximates to Women's Small) blouse is really quite distinctive. I used Low Water Immersion to combine shades of deep red and mulberry, which gave the fabric a marbled effect, and the rayon embroidery of a bamboo pattern took the dye more strongly, giving the design a stunning contrast; see detail photos for close-ups.

The dyes used here are fiber-reactive, meaning they are chemically bonded to the fabric and won't wash out, fade, or bleed in your laundry. This blouse is machine washable in cold water on the gentle cycle to preserve the rayon embroidery.

"Ombre," which sounds like "hombre," refers to a color gradation, often from a deep color to a paler shade of the same color, but also from one color to another. Here I decided to try both in one garment, and I'm pretty pleased with the results.

The canvas: a Womens' Size XL lined cotton peasant skirt. Starting with a soft shade of brown at the top, the color gradually fades until a sky blue appears at the bottom. This skirt is super-long, hanging pretty much to my ankles (I'm 5'4"), nice and flowing, and has a lining to about the knees and a working drawstring waist. The colors are permanent, bonded to the fibers, so they won't bleed in your laundry or wash out.

From time to time I like to experiment with fabrics other than cotton which take the same kinds of dyes. When I came across this secondhand formerly plain white interlock knit rayon and nylon top by Ann Taylor, I had to bring it home and give it some new life. This came out a lovely soft turquoise color, with some random patterning (see detail photos) that reminded me of rippling water.

I regularly use them while shopping for groceries at the store or farmer's market, and while I don't use them for super-heavy items, like gallons of milk, they are perfect for the majority of our grocery shopping needs. Second hand "a pea in the pod" V-neck maternity tee is absolutely one-of-a-kind! The vivid golden yellow progressing to bright orange at the bottom creates an effect I have yet to see in maternity wear anywhere else. The jersey knit is a higher quality and slightly heavier weight than most maternity tees for a top that will wear long and wear well, and the procion mx fiber-reactive dyes are bonded to the fabric fibers and will never wash out or bleed in your laundry.

The size has worn off the tagless label, but the model shown is a size Medium. Bust measures at 38"/96.5cm unstretched, with a gentle easy stretch to 42"/106.6cm. Across the belly measures 41"/104cm unstretched, stretching to just over 44"/112cm. Bottom hem unstretched is 43"/109cm, stretched is 48"/122cm, and from top of shoulder (at neckline) to hem measures 26"/66cm.

Since so many of the garments I find fit a relatively limited range of sizes, I do keep an extra-sharp eye out for sizes on both ends of the spectrum, including plus sizes and petites. When I came across this lovely Petite Small top from Nine & Company gathering dust at a thrift shop, I decided to bring it home and show it some love.

Made from an unusual fiber combination - 54% silk, 24% rayon, 20% nylon, and 2% spandex - the fabric has just a hint of a shimmer to it that I could not get to show effectively on the photos. It's a slightly heavier knit than a regular tee, but not *quite* a sweater, so suitable for Summer wear and beyond. A small gather at the bust below the V-neck flatters the figure, and the bands of color from golden yellow at the top through a slightly brownish orange will take your wardrobe through Fall, too. Great with jeans, but works with dress pants and a jacket or blazer as well!
