An ideal chopping surface, end-grain is simply the best because it is self-healing, will look almost new after many months or even years of daily use, and most importantly will not dull your good cutlery. (Bamboo is too hard and not pleasurable at all to chop on, just ask any chef.)

As always, only FDA-approved water-resistant glue was used to make this block, which has been generously and carefully pretreated with superior mineral/block oil for at least one week.

End grain construction is simply the most professional, kindest surface for your good cutlery as you slice between the fibers of the wood. End grain is self-healing, non-scarring and will look almost new after years of use. Studies have shown that wood also has natural anti-bacterial properties lacking in plastic (which is much harder to clean) or glass or bamboo (grass) which dull your knives almost instantly.

Reclaimed Hickory End Grain Chopping Block

Relatively heavy and substantial blocks available of chef-grade, end grain hickory, as in these "book-match" and "patchwork" designs shown here. Hickory is difficult to work with, very hard and very beautiful.

End grain is the most labor intensive to construct but most rewarding chopping surface: non-scarring, self-healing and won't dull your knives.

I have a basement full of local hickory reclaimed from an embarrassingly poor, tongue & groove floor milling operation someone else performed. It seemed a shame to waste, so I'm milling it again.

Quarter-Sawn Oak Chop Block

Beautiful end grain quarter-sawn white oak. Available in sizes to match your at-home bar or busy kitchen. Quarter-sawn oak is very stable. Self-healing, non-scarring and knife-saving end grain. Built to endure for generations.

Medium size: 7-1/4" by 7-1/8" by 2"

Custom sizes available, ranging from the smaller bar block ($25) to as large as you would like (including island top and/or counter top). Blocks vary slightly from image as every board is handmade and unique. Please specify in convo or comments exactly what dimensions you'd like. Everything designed to be cut upon is pretreated and pre-sealed generously with mineral oil.

Please note: the more open grain of already unique-smelling oak will retain slightly more odor than other woods and develop a slightly richer patina. Perfectly safe if washed with warm water and soap and then treated regularly with mineral oil (we've used an oak block for many years ourselves). Some people really love them. The more open grain means that oak is not an ideal surface for preparing raw meat, however.

Edge Grain Cutting Board

Edge grain is less enduring than end grain but still a popular choice for everyday cutting boards. They provide a hard, enduring surface, and may be planed or sanded down and refinished as necessary.

Request a board similar to this one or simply ask me for your own preference of hardwood(s) or merely a desired color combination and router detail (garlic well, juice groove, etc).

Any size up to 12" by 14" by 2" ships for only $11.

Choice of hardwoods including maple, cherry, walnut, birch, white oak, red oak, ash, mahogany, hickory and other exotics like wenge, purpleheart, bloodwood and jatoba depending on availability.

Each board is unique and will vary in appearance slightly.

Without exotic wood each board is only $40.
With exotic wood some boards may be slightly more expensive.

Nearly every one of my boards is made using reclaimed timber, and each is thoroughly pretreated with mineral oil for at least one week to help it endure many years of work with proper care.
