HOW GLASS BEADS ARE MADE

Making glass beads with the use of a torch is called “lamp work”. The name has survived from the days when beads were actually made from the flame of an oil lamp. Although our modern torches are much hotter, much of the process remains unchanged. It starts with a glass rod which is heated until the tip becomes molten. This softened glass is then wound around a steel mandrel which forms the hole of the bead. The mandrel is constantly rotated while in this molten state and is then decorated with different glasses to form the design. Each bead is made one at a time and they are all different. The decorations can be simple to elaborate. Some beads can take hours to make. Once the bead design is finished it is then placed in a kiln for annealing which is a vital step in the making of lampwork beads. The little glass molecules are an orderly bunch and like to be lined up in a certain arrangement. The heating process disturbs this orderly arrangement and introduces stress into the glass which will cause it to break if the stress is not relieved. Annealing in a kiln is therapy for stress relief for the beads. Once properly annealed, the beads come out of the kiln with all stress relieved and ready to start a long hardy life as part of an earring, necklace, bracelet or just a beautiful piece of eye candy to please the owner.

We use Effetre (Moretti) glass for our beads. It is glass made and pulled into rods in Italy.
