Pokemon

$64.00
Pokemon Earrings with White Face and Blue/Pink Tail on Silver makes an interesting pair of earrings. The Pokemon images are far more abstract than most cartoons. The photo doesn't adequately convey the silver background for the tail earrings and around the white face.

This is a one of a kind pair of earrings about the penetration of cultural icons and impact of merchandising on the accumulation of trash. Pokemon was originally released as a pair of interlinkable Game Boy role-playing video games, Pokémon has since become the second most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Nintendo's own Mario series.

This collection is currently on display and available for purchase only through Etsy as an "unofficial" exploration of iconic images.

Constructed from post consumer recycled tin cans diverted from their destiny as trash, the embossed form keeps the earrings light and easy to wear.

One of a kind earrings. Sterling silver ear wires.
Earrings is 2 1/8” long
Length including ear wire is 2 ½” long.

Purchase of these earrings means you are participating in my experiment.

Betty Boop Earrings

$64.00
Betty Boop Earrings with a pink background and cute character portrayal are constructed from recycled tin cans and the original 1930 character revival. These earrings symbolize the penetration of cultural icons. One earrings has the face of a Betty Boop Character and the other her entire figure.

The embossed form keeps the earrings light and easy to wear.

One of a kind earrings. Sterling silver ear wires.
Earrings is 2 1/8” long
Length including ear wire is 2 ½” long.

Totally unofficial and unendorsed these earrings were constructed from a reycled Betty Boop item destined for the trash. These earrings are one of a kind commentary about creating an identity in our consumer society. Just like buying a brand name product we create an identity by what we buy and why we buy it.

Consumer merchandise and packaging produces quantities of waste material that must be buried in landfills or incinerated. Does the producer or the consumer bear any social or environmental accountability? Visualize the amount of stuff that we buy and throw away every day including the packaging which is all waste. “Where does all this wind up?”

Participate in this project by leaving your comments on Facebook or through Etsy Conversations.

Take a virtual tour of my studio at:
http://www.harriete-estel-berman.info/studio/studio.html

View my videos at
http://www.harriete-estel-berman.info/gall/videos.html

Look at my Current Events page to find out
about upcoming exhibitions:
http://www.harriete-estel-berman.info/upcomingevents.html
These are one of a kind earrings from post consumer tin cans with iconic images.

The characters are portrayed in orange ocher skin with Aladdin wearing purple turban. "The color design of the film was inspired by old Persian miniatures and Victorian paintings of the Middle East."* This is faithfully reproduced in the photo of these earrings. There is a matte silver at both the top and bottom of the film strip image. The back of the earrings is a matte silver and signed by Harriete Estel Berman.

These earrings are constructed from a post consumer recycled tin can from a Disney game diverted from its destiny as trash. The embossed form keeps the earrings light and easy to wear. I tested out this style of earrings and even wore them to exercise class. They are so light weight anyone would be comfortable wearing them for an entire day.

One of a kind earrings. Sterling silver ear wires.
Earrings is 2 1/8” long
Length including ear wire is 2 ½” long.

These earrings symbolize the penetration of cultural icons and impact of merchandising. As mercury was used in the process of curing felt used in some hats, it was impossible for hatters to avoid inhaling the mercury fumes given off during the hat making process. Hatters and mill workers often suffered mercury poisoning as residual mercury vapor caused neurological damage including confused speech and distorted vision; hatmaking was the main trade in Stockport, near where Carroll grew up. It was not unusual then for hatters to appear disturbed or mentally confused; many died early as a result of mercury poisoning.

**http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_Hatter

Each letter is cut from a different can.

Originally, I made this series of paint boxes with pins as a commentary about conferences which seem to have a lot of "talk" like Words Like Winter Snowflakes.

Each word in the paint box is a separate pin which can be worn alone or with multiple words at the same time. WORDS brooch is 1 7/16" x 2 5/8" wide as an example.

Images of the top and bottom of the paint box are shown in the detail image sidebar.

All future pieces in the series will be considerable more because these were the tests for the series. Custom made paint boxes with pins available by commission at $3000 and up.
The characters are drawn in fine detail with a sky blue background. If you know who the characters are....please tell me.

Constructed from portions of printed tin cans diverted from their destiny as trash, the earrings comment on my advocacy to recycle instead of “buy and dispose” consumption. The embossed form keeps the earrings light and easy to wear.

Sterling silver ear wires.
Earrings is 2 1/8” long
Length including ear wire is 2 ½” long.

I have been working with recycled tin cans for over 21 years. My work is in over 27 books and 14 museum collections. You can learn more about my work on my Profile. Follow the links to my web site, or visit my studio on line.

Making these cartoon earrings has been an interesting experience. Stay tuned as I investigate how much or little of the image is needed to convey recognition of the cultural icon and whether the message of recycling is protected under fair use.

Which trademark, copyright and fair use issues are involved when a tin is reused in a post-consumer object? Is it better to throw the tin into a landfill or to recycle it by cutting it up and transforming the material into a pair of earrings? Think green and recycled as these earrings were made from a recycled game box. Rescued from its destiny as trash, or land fill, no new materials were used to create these earrings.

If you look carefully at the detail you will see very small Disney characters. The lettering is metallic gold. The top and bottom edge are also metallic gold. This looks beautiful in person. The glint of metallic is quite attractive, but it photographs dark...so just keep that it mind. It is more metallic in appearance than the photo indicates.

These earrings symbolize the penetration of cultural icons and impact of merchandising on the accumulation of trash.

Consumer merchandise and packaging produces quantities of waste material that must be buried in landfills or incinerated. I think they are playing hooky from school and out for fun. The colors are great with fine detail. These irresistible characters are framed perfectly in the embossed form of these one of a kind earrings.

These earrings symbolize the penetration of cultural icons and impact of merchandising on the accumulation of trash.

Consumer merchandise and packaging produces quantities of waste material that must be buried in landfills or incinerated. Does the producer or the consumer bear any social or environmental accountability? Visualize the amount of stuff that we buy and throw away every day including the packaging which is all waste. “Where does all this wind up?”

Constructed from post consumer recycled tin cans diverted from their destiny as trash, the embossed form keeps the earrings light and easy to wear.

One of a kind earrings. In the 18th century chocolate was an exotic drink, praised for its healthy attributes. Casanova imbibed hot chocolate before his infamous exploits, touting chocolate’s aphrodisiac properties. Today chocolate lovers testify to their addiction while scientists research the effects of its active components.

My “grande”-sized, 21st century version standing at 23” tall is covered in chocolate packaging. The top and bottom edges use aluminum wrapped over a plastic core to mimic the silver foil of chocolate wrappers. The sterling silver finial has a chased and repousśed sterling silver “kiss”.

The chocolate words on the exterior have been altered to include the active components of chocolate, such as caffeine, theobromine, serotonin, and popular sexual stimulants such as Cialis and Viagra.

Chocolate pot constructed using recycled tin cans; sterling silver handle details and finial; 10k gold, sterling silver and aluminum rivets; aluminum foil over plastic core; brass pins; stainless steel screws; acrylic.

This chocolate is not a functional vessel. This is a sculpture intended as a commentary about the history of decorative arts and identity within our consumer society.

The images of women are also from recycled tin cans exemplifying how women are portrayed in our consumer society.
The steel is cut, folded, and riveted together.

9" height x 9" width x 1.25" depth

This is one wall piece from a series of work titled, The Deceiver and the Deceived. The pedestal sculpture from this series is shown in the final image. Additional pieces in the series can be seen by going to my profile to look at my web site. Each wall piece is one of a kind.

The fan form in the center was originally inspired by fan quilt patterns. The quilt patterns allude to the strong connection between traditional crafts, “woman’s work” and the home. Quilts were historically one of the few creative outlets for women in our culture.

The back is completely finished and equally as interesting. Check out the images.

You can see my work in over 25 books including the cover of "The Fine Art of the Tin Can." Recently published, the book "ReManufractured: The Conspicuous Transformation of Everyday Objects" (Skov-Holt) has an entire chapter about my work.
His book, Hints on Household Taste was a best selling book in England and America in the years after its initial publication in 1868. Ironically, Eastlake’s treatise expounds on commentary equally relevant today. He said that “public taste is corrupt-fashion rules, and few are shocked by sham and pretension.” Also, that “cheap and easy methods of workmanship in an endeavor to produce a show of finish with the least possible labor, as well as an unhealthy spirit of competition in regard to price, has continue to cause the value of our ordinary mechanic’s work to deteriorate.” Over one hundred years later , the parallels today are resounding.

Charles Eastlake was a design critic with much more influence in his day then the now reknown Arts and Crafts reformer William Morris. “ In fact, Morris’s first lecture on the decorative arts was given in 1877; long after Eastlake’s Hints on Household Taste achieved best seller status on both sides of the Atlantic.” page 55 in Nineteenth Century Furniture, Innovation, Revival and Reform by Mary Jean Madigan.

This chair is full sized, but it not designed for seating. IT is a sculpture about chairs and creating an identity in our consumer society.
38.25” height x 17.25” front width x 14” depth

Additional layers were unnecessary.

Pink Dot Orbit Red Pin uses a really hard to find tin and then the red dot in the center is domed tin can. Sterling silver rivets hold the two layers together.

An Oreo cookie floats on the back to conceal the commercial pin stem. YOu can only see the catch and pin stem.

On the back is a iron hallmark so that you know I made this pin as a one of a kind brooch. It you aren't sure about the meaning behind the iron hallmark, VISIT MY STUDIO on line at: http://www.harriete-estel-berman.info/studio/irons.html and find out more.

One of a kind pin height 3" width 3 1/8". Impact to the environment with mining, war, blood shed, civil unrest, and unethical practices of both the mining and gemstone industry's are all relevant issues in today's world of environmental and social responsibility.

The form of these earrings is the most becoming shape for everyone's face. They move easily and gracefully when they are being worn. The slightly embossed form makes the earrings very light weight yet strong. The top of the earring is printed with a small red gemstone surrounded by blue edge of colored tin.The edges of the tin cans are polished smooth.

I used a very rare tin can printed with gemstones to make these earrings. My 22 years of experience working with post consumer tin cans means that these earrings are carefully crafted despite the use of tin cans rescued from their destiny as trash.

My work is in 14 museum permanent collections and over 27 books. My use of recycled materials has been an environmental message and personal level of green advocacy since 1988.

Buying these earrings supports my work and speaks about your awareness and political advocacy for supporting the arts and thinking green.
These earrings are 2 3/4" long.

If you like these earrings do not wait to purchase them. They are one of a kind, from a very limited series of 4 different gemstone earrings. The first two pairs sold immediately.

These are one of a kind from a series of domed forms in an rich royal blue and printed matte gold. Dice and bead add a bit of shine and "lady luck."

Earrings constructed from recycled tin cans rescued from their destiny as trash. The dome shape keeps the earrings lightweight and strong. (I wear earrings like this to exercise and they never both me.) Small bead and dice from my extensive collection of found stuff collected over time.

Simple sterling silver ear wire.
Earring length from top of earring(not including ear wire) to the bottom of the dice is 2 14". Stop time with these one of a kind earrings. I have never made anything like these and used a very unusual tin lid with the roman numeral clock face.

The recycled tin cans are from post consumer tin cans rescued from their destiny as trash. I also used "rescued" brass plated clock hands (from my grandfather's collection of stuff) which swing gracefully back and forth when you wear the earrings.

The earrings are very lightweight and strong because of the embossed form.

Sterling silver posts are artfully concealed on the back with 10k gold jump rings to the earring. Sterling silver rivets hold the layers of the post portion together.

Colors are a pale aqua green and pale yellow detail, clock face with Roman numerals, center form is slightly detached along the inside edge for more depth.

Dimension: 3 ¼” H X 2 1/4” W
Dimension: 4 ¼” H X 2 ¼” W

Portraits Earrings by Harriete Estel Berman

The ovals hang horizontally, with both sides equally dramatic.

The "front" includes a single portrait surrounded by the UPC Code. This is inspired by the fact that we create our identity in our consumer society by what we wear and why we wear it. All of our clothing has labels across the chest, on the pocket or label, or around the waist band. The UPC code is a symbol for creating identity in our consumer society.

The reverse side includes the famous portraits of Mount Rushmore, famous presidents that our part of our national identity.

The oval is 2 5/16" across. The length from the top of the earwire to the bottom of the earring is 2 1/8" long. The multiple portraits are created with layers of tin cans which make these earrings very heavy. Great for parties or entertaining conversations, but "bad" for exercise or dancing. If you like to wear lightweight earrings do not consider purchase of this pair. Look at other earrings instead.

I have worked with recycled tin cans for over 21 years. The scallop edge is smooth and the earrings are carefully constructed using sterling silver rivets and sterling silver ear wires.

Yellow Bracelets with Orange Dots by Harriete Estel Berman

$455.00
Yellow Bracelet with Orange Dots by Harriete Estel Berman is a super thin bangle style bracelet constructed from recycled tin cans. The diameter is 4 1/8" across and about 1/4" thick.

The reverse side is from an “America Online” tin can in dark blue with white address label. The outside edge is blue and white check with pinked zig-zag details.

The inside of the wrist is a hexagonal shape with an abstract Girl Scout tin in red, green, blue, with black and white.

The use of the tins cans diverted from their destiny as trash is a commentary about our consumer society. Though my materials are not valuable like gold and silver, they reflect the values of our consumer society. These humble materials are carefully crafted inspired by my twenty years of experience working with tin cans.

The tin cans used to make my work are amazingly durable. This particular bracelet is small and petite style that is one of a kind.

I know, it happens to me all the time! A metallic gold medallion and Chinese characters also decorate this side.

The other side says “1045 Hours Free!” using a white tin from an AOL CD. It has a rainbow swirl center stripe continuing the "swirly theme" on this bracelet.

The outside of this bracelet is about 1/2" wide. The tin is red with swirls and curly cues wraps over both sides of the outside edge with scallops.

Inside the wrist is red with metallic gold lines. The scallops wrap around both sides. The wrist is 2 9/16" in diameter fitting a medium sized hand. If you want to wear the bracelet and are concerned about how the bracelet will fit your hand, write to me and ask me to send a paper template.

The bracelet is made from recycled tin cans which are very clean with only one faint scratch.
Scary Girl Earrings with Spider and Japanese Lantern

$125.00
Scary Girl Earrings are constructed by Harriete Estel Berman from a Japanese anime Scary Girl lunch box. You can see the Japanese influence in the lantern on one earring.

I have been working with recycled tin cans for over 21 years. Though this material is diverted from its destiny as trash or recycling waste as post consumer material, I fabricate as carefully as if it were gold or silver.

These earrings are definitely one of a kind and my personal favorite. The asymmetrical design makes them even better.

The post is sterling silver. The top of the earring uses vintage steel doll house materials and a top layer of recycled tin cans. The earring length is 2 5/8 inches long. The oval is 2" long. Sterling silver rivets hold the multiple layers together.

The pendant part of the earring has a curved edge which makes this very lightweight earring very strong and rigid.

This particular lunch box is really cool and very hard to find. These one of kind earrings are inspired. They will make your day!

Look at her web site to see her work at:
www.harriete-estel-berman.info.

The colors are super yummy, and make any out fit outstanding.

Buy them for yourself. When you filled with self doubt the TRY IT motto will give you courage and confidence in what ever you do! Radiate energy and a positive attitude.

The length of the earrings is 3 3/8 inches long and 2 1/4 inches wide.
The tins are in excellent condition despite their destiny as trash. The scallop edge is soft and is not sharp. The drop shape covers the earring stud and is a complementary form against the ear lobe.

These earrings are a new series of work that is much more affordable than my major museum quality pieces that cost $1000s and may be outside your budget.

You can see more of my work in over 25 books and at 12 museums. Look at my profile for more information about the Professional Guidelines for Artists and Craftspeople. The documents are online and free.

These multiple layers of tins are carefully constructed to create a new series of pins. The pin stem on the back is securely attached though artfully concealed. Back signed by Harriete Estel Berman.

Come back to my shop on Etsy to see the continuing series.

I have been working with recycled tin cans since 1988 long before working with recycled materials was popular. In fact, at the time, it was kind of embarrassing to be work with materials diverted from their destiny as trash.

Over the many years of working with tin cans, I have developed my own techniques and innovations for assembling each and every one of a kind piece. My work is on the cover of many books including The Fine Art of the Tin Can by Bobby Hansen. Look at the resume page on my web site for a list of the more than 25 books that include my work.

2 Orange Identity Beads by Harriete Estel Berman

$290.00
2 Orange Identity Beads by Harriete Estel Berman are constructed from recycled tin cans from post consumer product packaging.

The core is translucent Orange Plexiglas. The center is brass. These two beads are available as a set. If you want to buy one or the other beads shown in the photos let me know. I will re-list the items to suit your interests.

These are just a few beads left over from whole series of work. They are available on Etsy for a limited time only until I have time to make another bracelet or necklace.

You can see the entire series of work on my web site at:
http://www.harriete-estel-berman.info/jewelry/ID_Bead.html

The beads are a commentary about our creating an identity in our consumer society. Both sides are a nutrition label with white background and black lettering. After all, aren't "we are what we eat."

In our culture a sense of identity and perception of value is created through brand name products which promise to enhance the consumer’s life by association with the product. For instance, buying a premium brand of coffee, shampoo, or chocolate identifies the buyer as part of an elite group.

“Bar Codes” or UPC (Universal Product Codes) pervade our consumer society and cryptically identify everything in today’s marketplace. Printed on tin cans the mysterious encrypted sequence of lines and spaces identifies every food product, and every item that we buy. In addition to identifying every product, describing the item and its value, the UPC tracks the purchasing patterns of each consumer through their purchases.

Bar codes and brand name material symbolize our identity through our purchasing power. Post-consumer tin containers recycle our unconscious consumption of advertising, marketing, and possession as identification. In a society so transitory and hyper-marketed, what do we value most and why? One may wonder who we really are, for how much of our identity is derived from what we consume?
The form is inspired by traditional Japanese Medallions with three lobes.

This side is a beautiful tin which is very rare, I have only had this tin once in 20 years. It has an embossed design of raised orange maple leaves and green fern leaves against black.

The other side has a rare light green tin with “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" and the additional layer which says: “Unlock the Magic."

Outside edge is 1 1/2" wide in a bright green “Minerva Olive Oil” tin can.

Inside edge of the wrist is a Cadbury candies against purple and orange, hexagonal wrist.

The wrist size is large enough even for the largest hands. This is a big bracelet overall. It is a real eye catcher!

What I like about the large bracelets like this is that you can put them out for display. The edge is wide enough on this bracelet that it actually stands up on its own. Height is about 6 1/2". Or you can hang you bracelets on the wall. Everyone that comes to my house always starts talking about the jewelry on the wall immediately. They are blown away! Start a conversation at your house.

Check out my profile page to find out more about the artist, Harriete Estel Berman.
Fancy octagonal bracelet in cream and teal by Harriete Estel Berman

$892.00
This is a very beautiful bracelet that is a quite sophisticated and refined in its appearance. The Octagonal form is a fancy shape with teal & gold scroll work all over design. The tin on the sides wraps to reverse side. IF you like this bracelet buy in now, because I very rarely make bracelets that are as elegant as this. Inspiration from this amazing tin won't happen again and the tins are in perfect condition!

There are scallop shaped pinks and additional brass rivets which really highlight the gold dots in the printed tin. The outside edge has the pinked detail with brass rivets. Outside diameter is 5 3/16". Further details on the edge include orange triangles outlined in red, and gold diamonds outlined in black.

This outside tins wraps over to the collage on the other side. It includes a collage of advertisements from the 20th century which are constant inspiration, including an old fashioned advertisement from the turn of the century of a shoe, recent metro map, popcorn, car, striped cups, and a building in black and white photo.

The inside wrist is thin, with red, yellow, lilac and blue abstract flowers.
Japanese Medallion Form with Vintage Roses by Harriete Estel Berman

$798.00
Japanese Medallion form by Harriete Estel Berman is inspired by traditional shapes of Japanese medallions. It has a soft three lobe shape which is easy to wear and a large wrist hole.

This side has a black background with pink colored roses, lime green leaves and blue corn flowers. This is a beautiful tin in excellent condition especially if you realize how old it is, my best guess is early 1940's.

The outside edge is green which is really striking next to the pink roses with green leaves on the front side. The tin on the outside is from olive oil tin in two colors of green: a bright green like the leaves on the flowers, and mid green. On the side is a picture of olives with leaves. These leaves echoes the leaves on the roses.

The inside wrist in reds to peach, resonates off the pink roses. The pattern on the inside wrist is also inspired by Japanese medallions so thematically the entire bracelet is very consistent. The more you look at the colors, and patterns, the more you see the relationship between the various elements.

Turn over the bracelet to see an abstract pattern of blue with gold stars, green squiggle, red, and blues.
The reds of the inside wrist resonate with the red pattern on this side. There are slight scratches on this side which are not a concern for me, but I just want you to know. All of the materials are recycled tin cans rescued from their destiny as trash. the wear on the tin cans are part of their history.

This is a big bracelet. The side is wide enough to stand up the bracelet for display or hang it on the wall. The wrist is large enough for big hands. This bracelet is not light but I have worn bracelets this size and weight and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Usually, I wear these bracelets for going out to parties, openings and dinners. It is a real conversation starter. Then I take the bracelet off and put it on the table to eat. Have a great time wearing my bracelets.
Disney Satire Earrings

They show some of your favorite Disney characters as a parody about creating an identity in our consumer society. Are you in love with Disney characters? Do you identify with the celluloid images of Hollywood? Do you want to see yourself on film?

The earrings are lightweight, and carefully constructed with sterling silver rivets. They hang to 3 1/4" to the bottom tip of the earring, gracefully following the shape of your face. They are not endorsed by Disney and were made from recycled materials as a commentary about our consumer society. This metal may not be as precious as gold or silver, but in many ways reveal more about the values of our society. The cultural values promoted by the marketplace -- and ultimately found in our junk piles – are fodder for ideas, insight and inspiration.

Harriete Estel Berman's work from jewelry to sculpture uses recycled material

Look at more of my work on my web site at:
http://www.harriete-estel-berman.info

Ask your professional questions about working as an artist and craftsperson at my blog: http://www.askharriete.typepad.com.

It is very thin at the edge and a little thicker in the center but overall it is a very slim design measuring 1/8”-1/2” thick.

The reverse side is from a Snickers Satisfaction Tour scene of a rock concert but it looks really abstract in purples & pinks.

Inside the wrist is a tin with orange & gold with orange/purple triangle trim. It says,”Peach Tea”.

The wrist shape is octagonal form and will fit a large hand.If you aren't sure about fit, contact the artist so that she can send a paper pattern to try on before purchase.

This is a slim, delicate bracelet and it is one of a kind. I am not making any more bracelets like this. There are no duplicates or anything even similar.'

Read about my work on my profile, website or on a recent blog Q & A with Rob Walker at:

http://www.murketing.com/journal/?p=1524

Anyway -- hope you enjoy reading it! The asymmetrical pattern on the earrings is very eye catching. The form is very complementary to everyone's features and moves beautifully when you wear the earrings. These one of a kind earrings by Harriete Estel Berman will make your day effervescent!

Constructed from recycled tin cans rescued from its destiny as trash, these are very light weight earrings with polished edges. Despite their humble origins they are very carefully constructed with sterling silver rivets and sterling silver posts.
Earring is a total of 3" long.

My work with recycled tin cans talks about how we creat an identity for our selves in our consumer society by what we buy and why we buy it. I have been working with recycled tin cans for over 21 years, way before the current recycling movement. My work includes earrings and jewelry to lawn size sculptures of GRASS/gras' from recycled tin cans.

View my web site at: http://www.harriete-estel-berman.info to see the range of work.
