Have you ever felt invisible... as though you blend into the landscape of your environment?
"Topographical Me" is the first of my Invisible Series of paintings exploring this theme. As an urban lady growing up in south London, I found the sights, smells and sounds exciting. But my favourite pass-time was trying to guess what my fellow Londoners were thinking or feeling as they went about their business. Sometimes, you didn't have to imagine. I can count the amount of times in a week when I would see a person standing on the platform crying while waiting for a train... or a couple giving each other the cold shoulder... or a creative thinker typing out their dreams on their laptop... or that student with a terrible laugh discussing the latest "going-ons" in their uni!
As humans, we feel so much... but often show so little... we are complex yet fascinating beings... if only we took the time to find out more about one another...

Afro-Caribbean Shield en Blanc - I

Description:
A textured artwork symbolising the cultural influences of an Afro-Caribbean person. One half of the shield looks typically African using the strip pattern reminiscent of the Zulu tribes black and white strip pattern. The other half is a palm leaf symbolising the Caribbean. I couldn't use a pattern for this half because there isn't a historical one that can be accurately called "Caribbean"... but there is the vegetation of the islands. At least for me, when I think of the Caribbean, the first thing I feel is the sun... but the first thing I see is the cooling shade of a palm leaf...

My Shields paintings are symbolic of all the things in our life that provide protection and comfort to us. This can be many things... from our cultural inheritance -especially when you're living in a different country - to love of our family and friends.

Description:
A textured artwork symbolising the cultural influences of an Afro-Caribbean person. One half of the shield looks typically African using the strip pattern reminiscent of the Zulu tribes black and white strip pattern. The other half is a palm leaf symbolising the Caribbean. I couldn't use a pattern for this half because there isn't a historical one that can be accurately called "Caribbean"... but there is the vegetation of the islands. At least for me, when I think of the Caribbean, the first thing I feel is the sun... but the first thing I see is the cooling shade of a palm leaf...

My Shields paintings are symbolic of all the things in our life that provide protection and comfort to us. This can be many things... from our cultural inheritance -especially when you're living in a different country - to love of our family and friends.

Description:

The brief was simple-ish lol
- Use the colours Maroon, Peach and Forest Green
- Abstract
- African theme... but with a Caribbean twist
- Must be a big painting
- 4 weeks to complete it because the resulting artworks will be on their way to Trinidad as a gift.

The commissioner and I looked over the wish-list... and then looked at each other. How da hell were we gonna pull this off! There were so many things to consider including what tone of peach to use that wouldn't clash and burn next to the other two hues. How was I going to paint a HUGE painting that needed to go on a regular commercial flight to the Caribbean?

So I spent the next two weeks dreaming up a design. Then another 4 late nights re-creating the design literally as I painted lol. (Do any other artists work like that by the way?)

The result was "I is Yours". A collection of artworks that naturally lie next to one another, yet have the strength to stand solo or in groups of threes. It is the visual reflection of the Porgy and Bess song: "Bess, You is My Woman Now..."

Description:
I enjoy painting this canvas of counsel. The original version was created for my first exhibition held at the Red Gate Gallery in London 23rd Jan - 29th Jan 2009 and I have created several variations ever since. It was a hot favourate among the ladies. I think it was the warm vibrate colours that seems to stimulate your senses... that combined with the Adinkra symbols and their deep meanings makes this a winner for your home, office or any place that needs sunset glowing feel.

When I first created this painting, I wanted it to radiate power and wisdom. I wanted it draw the viewer, then hold them captive until they walked away feeling powerful. Judging from the responses received... I think it hit the mark.

The four adinkra symbols used in this painting are

1. NYAME NTI
"by God's grace"
symbol of faith and trust in God

similar to Gye Nyame
According to The Adinkra Dictionary by W. Bruce Willis: "This stalk is depicted as the staff of life in many cultures. It symbolizes to the Akan that food is a basis of life and that they could not survive if not for the food that God has placed here on Earth for their nourishment. "

2. AYA
"fern"
symbol of endurance and resourcefulness

The fern is a hardy plant that can grow in difficult places. "An individual who wears this symbol suggests that he has endured many adversities and outlasted much difficulty." (Willis, The Adinkra Dictionary)

3.DWENNIMMEN
"ram's horns"
symbol of humility together with strength

The ram will fight fiercely against an adversary, but it also submits humbly to slaughter, emphasizing that even the strong need to be humble.

4. ADINKRAHENE
"Chief of the adinkra symbols"

symbol of greatness, charisma and leadership

This symbol is said to have played an inspiring role in the designing of other symbols. it signifies the importance of playing a leadership role.

I love sayings and motifs. I think they're the status symbols for the wise! So I created my first range of sweet motifs for my first exhibition held in London, UK in January 2009. I have a particular affliation for Caribbean sayings -because my mother always dropped them on us as words of counsel, admonition, comfort or raw humour! I discovered Adrinkra symbols in my early teens which was around the time I also learnt to wrap my hair with cloth like Erykah Badu.
But there's no point in keeping these pearls of wisdom to myself. So I've choosen to share them with you. Why not bring wise words into your daily lives with my Afro-Caribbean Motifs...

Description:

I love doodling. I usually doodle on my way to work... and in meetings... and when I'm trying to stay awake (usually in meetings lol). But some of my best Eureka moments occur when I'm travelling. And the roots of this painting are firmly planted on the 8.17am train from my local train station to London Bridge. So there I was propped upright by 15 billion bodies when I saw it... a line of men hidden by shields. I haven't got a clue what triggered it. Knowing my brain, it could have been anything from the pizza I had last night to the wicked pairs of shoes I saw on lady with the black coat! The point it, I saw it with my mind's eye, and I managed to sketch it in my notebook before I forgot...(sorry fellow passengers who had to accommodate me hunting in my BIG bag for my notebook and pen).

A few months later, I painted it... and here it is. I named it "Protection" because while I was painting it, I was thinking about the strong men and women in my life. The shield became a symbol of the protection they have given me over the years in it's many shapes and forms

For as long as I can remember, I've collected quotes. A strange past time for an average 8 year old... but I loved it. I founds words to be...well... pretty!

Some of the best quotes I have collected over the years are Trinidadian sayings. All of the Islands in the Caribbean have their special quotes. A lot of them are variations of the same sentiment. But there is something about the way that Trini's handle words. It's the verbal equivalent of chicken soup: looks strange in the pot but tastes damn good!

The four quotes on this painting are:

1. Never See, Come See...
2. Same Khaki Pants.
3. Band Your Belly.
4. Playing Dead to Catch Corbeau Alive.

This is another one of my favourites and I'm dying to do another one using a different colour combination -or even the same contrast but different shades... It's a powerful piece. My Afro-Lady is looking confident and HOTTT whilst dealing with her heavy load. She's reminding me not to let adversity win... cos I'm too fine for that! lolol

The original painting was sold at my first Exhibition hosted at the Red Gate Gallery in London 23rd Jan - 29th Jan 2009.

Mother and Child

I have had the pleasure of seeing all of my nieces and nephews within hours of their births... in fact, I was the first person to lay eyes on one of my nieces because I was my sister's birthing partner. I have to say... it was a privilege and an honour to see their tiny faces.... to hold their tiny frames... but it was even more heart-warming seeing them wrapped in the arms of their mothers... So for the fourth time, I play tribute to that bond... that precious bond... between mother and child...

The artwork shown was the fourth version of my "Mother and Child" paintings which was snapped up at my first exhibition earlier this year.

Pan and Feathers Lady

The sight of a Mas Band chipping down the road during Carnival takes my breath away. As a child I used to dream of the day when I could wear one of those huge feather headdresses and have a steel-pan hanging from my neck. That day has never materialised for me... but the dream is still vivid and the vibe is still strong.

The Revellers

Those who take part in Trinidad’s carnival are known as Revellers. Some take part wearing costumes. They are commonly described as “playing Mas” (i.e. Masquerading). Indeed, the streets are turned into a ballroom and everyone “wears a new mask”. The Revellers wine to ground or jump up in the air… you can’t help yourself when the pulsating beat of the pan or the tinny sound of other instruments take hold of you.
Before you know it, you’re in a trance, chipping down the road with an enchanted sea of people…
