Copper Bookends - Angel and Stars

$99.99
For home or office, the antique finish in these solid copper bookends brings out the etching in my design. Made of heavy 18 gauge copper and measuring approximately 6 inches wide by 8 inches tall, they will handsomely support books on your shelf, or decorate the shelves by placing the bookend in front of the books as shown. They are backed with wool-blend (not craft) felt to provide long lasting protection to both your books and the bookends.

I don't know the author, but I love the inscription.

"Yearn'd to Burst the Folded Gloom
To Bare the Eternal Heavens Again
To Feel Once More in Placid Awe
The Strong Imagination Roll a Sphere of Stars About My Soul"

I want you to enjoy my useful art. If for any reason you are not pleased with my item, please contact me within 7 days. I will accommodate you in any way I can. If you would prefer, return your purchase within the 7 days in its original condition and I will refund your purchase price minus shipping charges.

As an Eclectic Metalsmith, I enjoy working with metals in unique ways. With the right equipment and chemicals, the multistep process of etching copper is great way of making attractive jewelry and household items.

I start with transferring a black and white design to a special material used for etching metals. With the design placed on a cleaned sheet of copper, heat is applied to transfer the black part of the design. The copper is placed in a ferric chloride etching bath which eats away the open areas of copper but will not eat away the black areas that were transferred. After a period of time, the copper is etched deeply enough to clearly see the pattern. At this point the copper is cleaned, dried, and dipped in the antiquing bath. By rubbing sandpaper over the top of the copper sheet, the antiquing layer is cleaned off the top of the metal and remains in the etched area. The antiquing step is performed a couple of times to darken the etched background and to give clear definition to the design. To prevent the normal darkening oxidation of the copper, the piece is then given a protective coating and then backed with felt.

Copper Etched Cuff Bracelet - Tribal Design - Sz M

$19.99
This 1/2" wide bracelet was first etched in a tribal design, then a permanent patina added to bring out the pattern. I developed this design to give myself a real challenge...just how fine can I etch the lines and just how close together can I get the lines and still be able to see them as lines? This cuff demonstrates just how fine those lines can be. I really like this cuff, both for its challenge and its beauty.

This cuff has a lacquer finish on both the inside and out. The lacquer prevents development of copper's natural patina, so this cuff will retain the contrast between the light copper and the black antiquing.

The medium bracelet can be tightened or loosened by the wearer to fit most women and small boned men.

Copper Etched Cuff Bracelet - Celtic Design Sz Men's M

$29.99
This almost 1 inch wide bracelet was first etched in a celtic motif, then a permanent patina added to bring out the Celtic Dragon design. This cuff has no finish and over time will develop copper's warm brown patina. With its unfinished inside, this cuff bracelet will provide all the health benefits of copper. If you would prefer the lacquer finish on the cuff, please let me know in the notes section of your order.

The Men's medium bracelet can be tightened or loosened by the wearer to fit most men and larger women’s wrists.

With the right equipment and chemicals, the multistep process of etching copper is a great way of making attractive jewelry and household items.

At this point the copper is cleaned, dried. For antiquing, the piece is dipped in the antiquing bath. By rubbing sandpaper over the top of the copper sheet, the antiquing layer is cleaned off the top of the metal and remains in the etched area. The antiquing step is performed a couple of times to darken the etched background and to give clear definition to the design.

With the right equipment and chemicals, the multistep process of etching copper is a great way of making attractive jewelry and household items.

After a period of time, the copper is etched deeply enough to clearly see the design. For antiquing, the piece is dipped in the antiquing bath. By rubbing sandpaper over the top of the copper sheet, the antiquing layer is cleaned off the top of the metal and remains in the etched area. The unlacquered chain is about 20 inches long. The copper was first etched in my original claddagh design, and then a permanent patina added to bring out the design. As the pendant also has no finish, it will develop copper’s natural patina making the added patina more subtle. If you would prefer to lacquer the pendant to maintain its current patina, please let me know in the notes section of your order. The chain is unfinished so that over time it will develop its patina to coordinate with whichever patina you choose.

I want you to enjoy my useful art. This bracelet is almost 8 inches inches long. This chainmaille design is known as “idiot’s delight” and has a really nice slinky feel. The hook and loop clasp is handcrafted of the same teal wire as the teal wire used in the hand cut rings. While the bracelet is teal in color, I used teal and sea foam green rings to give the bracelet its pretty color dimensionality.

I want you to enjoy my useful art. If for any reason you are not pleased with my item, please contact me within 7 days. I will accommodate you in any way I can. If you would prefer, return your purchase within the 7 days in its original condition with its original packaging and I will refund your purchase price minus shipping charges.

Artisan's wire has a pure copper core and is coated with a wide variety of permanent colors. For the natural copper wire, the copper core is coated with a manufacturer applied clear finish. As no copper metal touches the skin, even those who whose skin discolors when wearing copper can wear this jewelry without worry. These durable tarnish resistant finishes keep colors looking as bright and beautiful as the day the jewelry was made.
I start with forging the copper with one of my special hammers. Then, depending upon my whim, the edge is turned over a bit, rolled over and flattened or rolled and left rounded. So there is no scratchiness next to your skin, I file and sand the edges and corners smooth. For those luscious oranges, reds, and purple reds, I use my jeweler’s torch to add a heat patina. This one also has a little black here and there. This is permanent coloration to the metal. There is no paint or color to flake off over time. Each cuff is unique as the heat colors each piece in different shades across the metal. For a pleasant shine, I wax the finish. Over time, the wax will wear and your skin oils will provide a wonderful shine. This is a cuff made to be worn and loved.

The cuff pictured is a small and will fit small boned women. It is about 1 1/8 inches wide.

I want you to enjoy my useful art. If for any reason you are not pleased with my item, please contact me within 7 days. I cut the shape of the Celtic dragon by hand to accentuate the shape. At it widest, it is almost 1 1/2 inches. The narrowest area is about ¾ of an inch. The bracelet is a medium size and the bracelet can be tightened or loosened by the wearer to fit most women’s wrists. The bracelet measures just over 2 ¼ inches long by just under 2 inches wide.

A clear finish has been used on both the inside and outside to help maintain the patina and prevent potential skin discoloration.

I want you to enjoy my useful art. The copper is placed in a ferric chloride etching bath which eats away the open areas of copper but will not eat away the black areas that were transferred. After a period of time, the copper is etched deeply enough to clearly see the pattern. At this point the copper is cleaned, dried and the piece completed if no antiquing is to be done. To prevent the normal darkening oxidation of the copper, the piece is then given a protective coating.

As this cuff has no finish, the copper will develop its natural patina making the added patina more subtle. With its unfinished inside, it will provide all the health benefits of copper. If you would prefer the lacquer finish on the inside of the bracelet to prevent discoloration of the skin, please let me know in the notes section of your order. I can lacquer the outside as well if you would like the bracelet to remain lighter and as it is in the picture, just let me know in the notes of your order.

The size medium cuff bracelet can be tightened or loosened by the wearer to comfortably fit most women and smaller boned men.

With the right equipment and chemicals, the multistep process of etching copper is a great way of making attractive jewelry and household items.

I start with transferring a black and white design to a special material used for etching metals. With the design placed on a cleaned sheet of copper, heat is applied to transfer the black part of the design to the copper. The copper is then placed in an etching bath which eats away the open areas of copper and leaves the black areas that were transferred. After a period of time, the copper is etched deeply enough to clearly see the pattern. At this point the copper is cleaned, dried and the piece completed if no antiquing is to be done. For antiquing, the piece is dipped in the antiquing bath. By cleaning over the top of the copper sheet, the antiquing layer is cleaned off the top of the metal and remains in the etched area. The antiquing step is performed a couple of times to darken the etched background and to give clear definition to the design.
Dani's Sterling Silver Ring size 6

$49.99
I call this Dani's ring because my daughter Danielle and I made this lost wax cast ring. This sterling silver ring is a size 6 1/8 and is approximately 1/4 inches wide. This is a nice sturdy ring with lots of sterling in it. Really pretty on the finger too!

I want you to enjoy our useful art. If for any reason you are not pleased with the item, please contact me within 7 days. I will accommodate you in any way I can. If you would prefer, return your purchase within the 7 days in its original condition with its original packaging and I will refund your purchase price minus shipping expenses.

In lost wax casting, a wax model of the finished ring is made. It is exaclty the same size as the finished ring and has every detail that the artist wants in the finished piece. The wax model is placed in plaster and the plaster is left to dry. Before placing in the plaster, a sprue is added which is a port from the wax model to the outside edge of the plaster. The plaster, with the wax model inside, is heated until the wax melts and drains out the sprue port. This leaves a cavity inside the plaster that is the inverse of the ring that the artist designed. Ths cavity can be filled with molten sterling silver through the sprue port. After the silver has become solid and cooled, the artist removes the sprue port, which is now filled with silver, cleans off the area where the port was placed and makes any required finishing touches. The riing is then cleaned and shined and ready to be worn.

They were roller printed (see below for technique) and a permanent patina added to bring out their design. A clear finish has been added to both the front and back to help maintain the patina. The ear wires are niobium, which is hypoallergenic.

I want you to enjoy my wearable art.

I created this pattern by etching my design on a sheet of brass. I then place a sheet of softened (annealed) copper over the etched brass sheet. By putting the two sheets together through a rolling mill, the brass design is “squished”, under high pressure, into the copper. The etched design becomes a 3D mirror image in the copper sheet.

Etching brass is done the same way as etching copper. I start with transferring a black and white design to a special material used for etching metals. With the design placed on a cleaned sheet of copper, heat is applied to transfer the black part of the design. The copper is placed in a ferric chloride etching bath, which eats away the open areas of copper but will not eat away the black areas that were transferred. After a period of time, the copper is etched deeply enough to clearly see the pattern. At this point the copper is cleaned, dried and the piece completed if no antiquing is to be done. For antiquing, the piece is dipped in the antiquing bath. By rubbing sandpaper over the top of the copper sheet, the antiquing layer is cleaned off the top of the metal and remains in the etched area. The antiquing step is performed a couple of times to darken the etched background and to give clear definition to the design. To prevent the normal darkening oxidation of the copper, the piece is then given a protective coating.
Resin Inlay Pendant and Choker

$34.95
This brass Resin Inlay Enamel pendant is about 1 inch wide by 13/8 inches long. The inlay materials that are mixed with the epoxy are pearlescent paints, gold and white. The pendant is made with brass circles and the brass oval has been plated with copper to give a warm contrast to the brass. The brass choker is very comfortable to wear and can be worn alone without the pendant. Read all about epoxy inlay enameling below.

Convo me if you would like this style made with herbs and spices that I have used in my other pieces. Your choice and the price would be the same.

I want you to enjoy my wearable art.

Resin Inlay is a technique where a very clear two part resin is mixed with the artisan’s choice of materials. These materials can be enamels used for enameling on copper or silver. They can also be herbs & spices that give the epoxy both color and wonderful texture. I also use powdered paints that have a pearlescent look to them. Anything that can be combined with mixed epoxy can be used - Ground eye shadows and blushes provide wonderful colors.

This thick mixture is then placed in the completed jewelry (or other item) area that I have designed and allowed to dry overnight. For textured inlays, the piece is now complete. Depending upon the look I want, inlays of homogeneous materials such as paint or enamels may be complete or I may sand the inlay down to the top of the copper, brass, or silver compartment for a flat matte look. Sanded pieces are then coated with a lacquer to be sure that the inlay is sealed.

Resin inlay pieces are as durable as the jewelry itself. To clean an enameled piece, use a soft damp cloth. If necessary, apply a mild soap solution to the cloth, clean the item, rinse gently with warm water and dry. The inlay is held in place by the strength of the resin. The bond to the metal is strong, but a sharp blow may dislodge the inlay. Therefore, this technique is best used for earrings, pendants, hair ornaments, and broaches or pins.

That said, I purchased a great sweater with ugly buttons. I made resin inlay buttons using a variety of spices and abused those buttons terribly. My intent was to remove the buttons before putting the sweater through the washer and dryer. I would never recommend this abuse, but I did accidentally put this sweater through the washer and dryer. Surprisingly, all of the buttons, except for one came out fine. One of the spices I used was rather chunky and a corner broke off one of the spice pieces. Sort of a “don’t do this at home” moment. The buttons are quite nice, so one of these days I’ll put the sweater up in the gallery section of my web site (eclecticmetalsmith.com). The sweater…it has been “well loved”.
I added the hidden bail so that she appears to prance across the genuine leather cord that measures about 31 inches. The leather is knotted so that sliding the knots further apart easily shortens the cord so that you can wear it whatever length looks best with your outfit. This piece is bright and shiny, almost like rose gold. It has no finish, so it will develop copper’s beautiful warm brown patina over time. These are the last two, so get them while you can.

If you like to keep the bright shiny look, it’s easy – just rub ketchup over the surface. The pendant turns shiny almost immediately. Rinse well with water, dry, and wear.

I want you to enjoy this cute pendant. If for any reason you are not pleased with my item, please contact me within 7 days. I will accommodate you in any way I can. If you would prefer, return your purchase within the 7 days in its original condition and I will refund your purchase price minus shipping charges.

Copper Bookends - Art Nouveau Birds

Measuring approximately 4 inches wide by 5 inches tall, they will handsomely support the books on your shelf, or decorate the shelves by placing the bookend in front of the books as shown. These are a smaller size so that they are well proportioned to support paperback books. They are backed with wool-blend (not craft) felt to provide long lasting protection to both your books and the bookends.

I want you to enjoy my useful art. If for any reason you are not pleased with my item, please contact me within 7 days. I will accommodate you in any way I can. If you would prefer, return your purchase within the 7 days in its original condition and I will refund your purchase price minus shipping and PayPal credit card charges.

To prevent the normal darkening oxidation of the copper, the piece is then given a protective coating and then backed with wool felt.

Simplicity Copper and Brass Bi-metal Cuff Bracelet - Size Medium

$39.99
This simple copper cuff bracelet is graced with a band of brass. The copper shines like rose gold and the highly polished brass emulates yellow gold. This is a show stopper at a very affordable price. The bright, almost mirror finish, creates a bracelet that is a joy to wear both every day and for glittery evenings.
This medium size cuff can be tightened or loosened by the wearer to fit most women.
This cuff has no finish and gives the wearer all the health benefits of copper. Over time it will develop copper and brass’s natural brown patinas. To keep it fresh and shiny simply dip the cuff in a salt and vinegar solution to quickly remove any patina that may have formed. Then rinse with water and dry. For that mirror finish, then give the cuff the “once over” with silver polish.
I want you to enjoy my useful art. If for any reason you are not pleased with my item, please contact me within 7 days. I will accommodate you in any way I can. If you would prefer, return your purchase within the 7 days in its original condition with its original packaging and I will refund your purchase price minus shipping expenses.
Etched Copper Cuff Bracelet - Nouveau Lilies - Sz Medium

$29.99
This approximately 3/4 inch wide bracelet was first etched in a lily motif, and then a permanent patina added to bring out the design. A clear finish has been used on both the inside and outside to help maintain the patina and prevent potential skin discoloration.

The bracelet is a size medium and can be tightened or loosened to fit most women.

With the right equipment and chemicals, the multistep process of etching copper is a great way of making attractive jewelry and household items.

I start with transferring a black and white design to a special material used for etching metals. I can make two choices with each design. I can etch the background away leaving the design raised. In this case, the patina fills in around the design and in large background areas, the center becomes light and darkens as it comes toward the raised design. Or, I can invert the design and etch it into the bracelet. In this case, the patina fills the design. If there are large design areas, the centers of those areas and the background become the light areas. Frequently, an inverted design has a lighter overall look.
