Mood Swings Earrings, triple dangles by Kate Drew-Wilkinson

$68.00
Well now, how about these colors! As you can see, they can be simply one color, or change into several different ones at the same time. Magical, pretty and light, these are downright festive! They are made with Sterling silver throughout, with some fancy effect in the rings from which the dangles hang. The whole earring hangs just over 1 ½ inches below their sterling ear wires. I put in some little copper hishi made by the Giriama Tribe from Kenya.

They too change color all day long and are from my “Mood Swings” collection. The earrings hang 40 mm below their Sterling silver hooks. I only use Sterling silver, never plate. They are light, easy to wear and graceful.

The beads are from my “Mood Swings” collection and they will change color all day long. You can see that the one on the left is a different color from the one on the right. The focal beads are 12 mm wide and 15mm long and the whole earring hangs 33 mm below their sterling silver hooks. I put just a little copper into the design to dance with the earth tones in the focals.

Black jewelry is not easy to find and this crystal is luscious. These earrings hang 37 mm from their silver hooks. She was a working ferry for 40 years. She settled into the mud at the Sausalito Waterfront and became home to many very creative musicians, artists and their children. For more info, go to wwwCharlesVanDammeFerry.org

This is one of a series I drew in the late 1970s. It is a color print, one of many I did at the time. I will be putting up more from time to time!
It is 8 1/2 by 11 inches.

Basic Wire Work for Bead Jewelry Making by KateDW

$14.00
This is a simple and comprehensive guide to classical wirework: the assembly of jewelry using beads or any objects with a hole. In 96 pages with 115 illustrations, it provides an introductory course in Kate's "closed circuit" technique of making earrings, necklaces and pins. It is an A to Z tutorial, from selecting tools and the correct wire through to finishing touches that distinguishes professional quality work from amateur hobbyist results. An excellent companion book for teaching wirework.

I illustrated it and published it myself in the very early nineties because there was no other book on the subject that I could find.. in fact I still haven't found one before mine that really teaches... It too has sold consistently throughout the years and we still ship them out to catalogs and magazines. So... this little book has taught many many people professional wirework and I am proud to be part of the growth of this kind of work over the years! Actually, the Lapidary Journal featured it side by side with Tim McCreight's great book called"The Complete Metalsmith in a half page ad for at least a year free of charge... I reckon they thought my book would bring in beginners and Tim's would take them to greater heights! It will be signed...

How To Be Successful in the Bead Jewelry Business by KateDW

$24.00

Packed with practical advice on all aspects of designing and selling bead jewelry. You are guided in selecting the workplace, whether it is at home or in a studio workshop, participating in art shows and fairs and selling through stores, galleries and catalogues. This 140 page illustrated book also helps in designing ahead for the next season and targeting your market. Kate Drew-Wilkinson has written a regular how-to column in the Lapidary Journal and is well qualified to help new jewelry designers on their journey to success.
So... that is the info on my web page about my book. You need to know that there is nothing about internet sales in it...I wrote it in the early nineties because there simply was not a book on either this, or Basic Wirework, which is my other book. I illustrated them because at the time I was not using a camera (!) and published them myself. Fact is, this book has sold continuously through the Rio Grande catalog, The Lapidary Journal before it changed, Rings'n Things, Fire Mountain, and so you can bet it is full of good info, and some tell me it is an entertaining read! It will be signed.

Earrings Silver Drops by KateDW

$25.00
These earrings are made with beads I bought during the time I was designing and making jewelry for the Nature Company.. remember them?
Because I bought these beads when silver prices were lower, I will pass them on to you at a lower cost than I could today. These beads are thick, strong, and will take punishment! The same kind of bead, if it was made in Tasco, Mexico would have been made with much thinner silver these days. Don't get me wrong... I love much of the silver work coming from there, it's just that the company I buy from in Attleborough, Mass, makes their beads so strong. I made the head pins too, because this style would have lost much charm if I had used the commercial flat head pins. (It's all in the detail!)The earrings hang 39 mm from their Silver lever backs and the base of the bead is 10 mm wide. This is the kind of jewelry you can wear every day, with jeans or something more chic!

This is a little gem though I say it myself! Light, clean, clear and full of fun, the seaweed dancing around the shells, a sandy bottom and a blue star hanging in the sky, I think this is a bead for someone who loves the sea. It is annealed and signed and set on one of my 18 gauge silver head pins with a very tasty silver bead cap.The pendant is 1 3/4 inches high, 1 inch wide and is made with recycled Spectrum glass remnants.

It is strung on 1.5 Stretch Magic. For those of you who don't know, this is FAR stronger than the 1.0 thickness. Time was you couldn't find this thicker one in catalogs and this may still be so.. I have 25 rolls at a time drop shipped to me. So. A bracelet like this can be worn year round for at least 3 years... I have not made them for longer than that so I cannot know how many years a bracelet can last.
This bracelet is 7 inches I think.. fairly small. Each bead is about 20mm long and the rest is copper hishi made by the Giriama tribe in Kenya and the old familiar granulated silver daisies usually made in Bali or India.
There you have it... a magical bracelet to make you smile...

This DVD is also 1 ½ hours of calm and unthreatening instruction.
I have many friends who have become professional glass bead makers with the help of my two instructional glass DVDs.
I went into using and teaching this method of making beads with stained glass scrap because there are many of you out there who have boxes of the stuff piling up under tables and in cupboards in your stained glass studios. I believe it is true to say that it often eventually gets tossed because the scraps are too small and you are moving on too fast with windows, lamps and occasional slumped pieces of jewelry to attend to those thumb-nail sized scraps. If you have made the move into bead making, wash them and punty up several colors at the same time, melt them in the flame and wind the glass around your mandrel, miracles can happen!

It is such a smart blue, and goes very well with Denim and also I think, black. I find this color moves very rapidly out of my gallery... These earrings hang 37mm from their hooks and the Crystal is 8mm.

(400 to 800 AD)
I have been making some beads from that period for my gallery in Arizona, and also some from earlier times. This bead has had the surface broken down in the process of making it, to replicate the surface of a bead from that period. Thsi particular style of bead is also typical of the "Jerusalem Glass", circa 300 AD.
So, it is simple, but arresting, a lovely bead for a man in my opinion. I deliberately don't set these beads on anything else but a fairly thick black cotton cord, to continue the timeless feel of them. I will put up more soon. It has a lovely feel and weight, not heavy, but just right!

I select the finest out of my collection for pieces like this. It is a really lovely piece and I can say that because it is about the beads. I have simply made them easily and comfortably wearable. It is hard to measure the length of a bracelet like this but it is of average woman's size and still wearable by a man... about 18 inches on the inside. The beads are about 14mm long and the copper is hishi from the Giriama tribe in Kenya. The earrings hang 35mm from their silver ear wires. I only want to sell these as a set... I will try to put up some extra earrings soon on their own. The bracelet is strung on elastic, but not anything like the elastic bracelets you have come across before! This is extra thick and strong and I have been wearing a bracelet strung on this every day for nearly four years now, just to test it. Fantastic, and it allows me to make bracelets that sit close to the arm with no clasp, very very easy to slip on and off.

For thos of you who know your style numbers, these are 5000s. They are much more pricey than your usual "diamond" shaped 5301s.
The focal bead is made by me and is 14 mm x 16 mm. It is Effetre glass, annealed and signed. The spacers are granulated silver and little copper hishi from Kenya.
The bracelet is strung on Stretch Magic, size 1.5. By the way, this is really the strength to use for bracelets...the moment you go from size 1 to size 1.5, your jewelry will be SO much stronger! I am have been wearing a bracelet ever day for over three years made with this size Stretch Magic and it is just fine. You may discover that most catalogs don't carry this size yet, but you can find it if you Google...
The bracelet is a 7 1/2 inch. Yummy.

Those of you who can still have VHS's will find this film well worth watching. When it first came out, the Lapidary Journal gave it two column of rave, ending up by declaring that anyone working in bead jewelry design should consider it a MUST!
So here is the info:
Kate's fourth video is packed with information for lamp work bead makers and collectors alike. In her calm and reassuring way, Kate demonstrates her techniques and provides the answers to simple and classical bead jewelry design. Kate has been a bead jewelry designer for 30 years and her creations have sold worldwide. She has always believed that the most salable jewelry follows certain rules. The work must be simple, strong, supple and wearable. It is not the first sale that counts, she says, but the buyer who returns regularly because the work is graceful and comfortable. In this video, she begins by showing how to make the simplest pieces with beads and cord, and illustrates the secrets of knotted necklaces, how to work with chain, how the make the Egyptian Clasp and how to create your own head pins. Everything in the video is geared for working with lamp work beads. This video will appeal to bead makers both new and experienced, helping them to translate their own designs into successful and salable jewelry.
Oh and here is a picture of the Egyptian Clasp...

I have had the little glass beads in my collection of antique beads for years and every time I looked at them I wondered at the perfection of their shapes and the smallness... what did the Czech manufacturer have in mind when they were made? They were dirty, and had obviously been kept together in strands of the same size. I think perhaps they were worn by someone who danced in them in Africa... anyway, I put them together like this. The glass looks like Turquoise. I spaced them with little granulated silver disks, a touch of copper from Kenya and the little flirty silver "tongues." They are ready to be danced in again.... The length of the earrings without the French hooks is 1 1/2 inches. The widest little glass bead is 6 mm, Classy little things...

Here you have 1 ½ hours of instruction on how to melt those little flat scraps of glass into beautiful beads. The most important thing to know is that you must use pieces with the same co-efficiency because the chemical structure is different in most makes of glass. Here I am working with Spectrum, which is 96 COE, but you can use your Bullseye glass or any other kind so long as you don’t mix them. You will learn how to make quite simple beads and I know you will love the process! You will be able to return to different chapters again and again. Many of you have moved on from the VHS format, and it was time to make my films available in DVD format. The teaching contained here will give you wings!

Lampwork Bead Jewelry Made Simple DVD by KateDW

$25.00
LAMP WORK JEWELRY DESIGN MADE SIMPLE

Was featured in the Lapidary Journal in October 2004 on page 141 in vol. 58, no. 7 if you want to read the whole article but if you can't get to it, here are some quotes from the review:
"Simply put, this video is a must for every lamp worker, bead maker, and jewelry artist. From the start, Kate tells the viewer her goal is to share concepts: "how to put things together so they're easy to wear, so they last, and to demystify jewelry-making methods."
"I had to resist the urge to press pause and run off to my workshop. Inspiration is certainly a high point of the video."
"Because the video is shot from Kate's perspective, you feel as if you're making each project yourself."
Written by Jane Dickerson
So there you have it, a great review! So find out for your self if the DVD is as great as Jane thought the VHS version was!
Notes from me... this is not about wire work, although I DO show you how to make an Egyptian Clasp...THAT 4 minutes took us 7 hrs to film in such closeup...(I really wanted to show exactly how I do it, because the two piece How-To I published on this for the Lapidary Journal years ago was one of the most asked-for How To wire work articles they ever did.)
I do not use any of the plastic covered threading cords in the film. It is all about using real thread to hand knot beads in the classical way... how to use fine chain,, sliding knots... you know... the useful instructions that can turn lamp work beads into salable jewelry. The film is one and a half hours long and really good for beginners and intermediate bead jewelry designers.

Lampwork Glass Bracelet Museum Repros by Kate D-W

$68.00
I usually spend the summers in France with fellow glass bead makers, Nadine Piskadlo and Frederic Marey, in Le Treport, Normandy. This is an area where many Meringovian (400 - 800 AD) artifacts are found including glass beads. The Romans taught glass bead making and many other ways to use glass to the people here and these artifacts are still being excavated. I include photographs I took during the annual Re-enactment and one of an excavation to give you an idea of how it all works. I am now making a series of bead bracelets, earrings and other beads and am having much fun. I have already put up a black and white glass bead, so here is the bracelet. It is a sort of average size, they are difficult to measure once they are made. It is not for a small wrist though. It could fit a man too. I would say about 7 1/2 ins. The beads average about 10mm, with varying lengths. I have strung it on 1.5mm Stretch Magic. This thickness is very strong. It is made with copper hishi and Balinese Silver Daisies. I know, they are not from the same period, but the bracelet is pretty nice anyway. Oh and I have thoroughly aged the glass, so the beads are matte and look really old because of something I do while I am actually making them!

Necklace, Swarovsky Crystal, Silver by Kate D-W

They are certainly not being made today and I have had these in their original packaging for about 25 years. This necklace is adorable, light and easy to wear and the wire work is made to last. It comes with a small silver heart shaped clasp and also with earrings to match. Whoever receives this necklace is fortunate. I know, I made it, and I love it! The chain is 19 inches long but adaptable because the clasp can be attached to make it shorter. The pendants hang 28 mm from the chain and I even made the little head pins. The earrings hang 30 mm from their silver hooks. I used 20 gauge silver wire. I believe in using the thickest silver suitable in any piece, so the work is strong enough to last generations. This is a set, classical really. I could see one of the Bronte Sisters loving this, or Jane Eyre!

I could go on...the point is that I find colors in glass which would look good this season. These earrings are quite small, hanging 21 mm from below their silver lever backs. If you make the picture larger, you can see the wear in some of them. I first made earrings like this in the 1980s, and a few days ago, pulled out one of my samples to re-produce some more. It took me two hours of searching to find the same beads again in my collection...I have collected trade beads for many years and some of these are very rare, simple though they look. These earrings are not heavy... but they are fun!.They hang 3 1/4 inches below their hooks and the largest discs are 10 mm across. I think they would look wonderful on someone tall with a long neck. I'm neither but I wear mine and enjoy their lovely colors.

I am amazed particularly by the green ones above and below the blue, because they are so small and beautifully shaped, and so rare, all of them. I search for them when I am shopping from the African traders at the Tucson show and they have almost completely disappeared. What a wonderful world is the bead world...The earrings hang 40 mm below the hooks.

They will go with everything from jeans and a tea shirt to a little black dress! The focal silver beads are made in Israel, a source for very inventive work, and the little flash of black between the copper hishi made by the Giriama tribe in Kenya are little celluloid disks also from Africa, which are usually packed onto long strings and then bound into multiple threads and turned into necklaces and belts. So.. I make my jewelry out of materials from many sources. This is only possible because I have been a collector for many years, passionate about everything bead. A simple little pair of earrings can carry many aspects of Geography and History. These earrings hang 46 mm from their hooks.

My gallery in Bisbee AZ is called "Uptown Tribal" and these reflect that I think.

Lampwork Bead, Palest Rose abstract on cord by Kate D-W

(it is only 23mm across.)

It is not easy to find glass in pinks and roses that works...This glass was what they call an "odd lot" and I'm happy it came my way. So light and creamy, I love it. It has a meandering latticino trail around it, and if you had it in your hand you would see the subtlest sparkle here and there of dicroic. I case the dichroic and then stretch it out to a thin stringer, which I incorporate in latticino built with clear glass and some black. By the time I have trailed it through the flame and onto the bead it is so diluted it becomes ethereal really...To that I added two "shells" that also have the tiny sparkle of dichroic... and then a few stars in black.
Definitely a gentle little abstract, with room for imagination and wonder at the magic of the spiral. I know, I do go on, but I so love doing this! The bead is signed, but you will need a magnifying glass to see my initials. Maybe you will see this bead as a gentle little treasure. It is on a black cotton cord with two sliding knots. Well annealed too, so it is really like stone.

Browse through some of your catalogs and imagine my jewelry complementing a jacket or dress that tempts you! Why not... Anyway, the matrix in this pair of earrings is a darkish grey, ( a shade or two darker than the photo, sorry!) and the spots are avocado, and the raised dots are black. The silver caps are slightly ornamental and the touch of copper pulls it all together. These earrings hang a smidge longer than one inch below their sterling silver french hooks.

The actual bead is 30 mm long and set with a silver bead cap, a touch of copper, and a silver clasp, hanging from one of my own home made silver head pins. The matrix is a dark avocado, with chartreuse pulls on the surface, and each of the bubble windows is lined with pale amethyst. The bead is well annealed...Very pretty!

Lampwork Bead and Earring set by Kate D-W

$48.00
This is a pleasant set of earrings, and a bead capped with silver and a touch of copper on a strong black cotton cord with two sliding knots. This set is made with a soft soft creamy light green with sort of light earthy mauve dots. These colors are perfect for wearing with this season's fashion colors. The earrings hang 22mm or just under 1 inch below the silver hooks and the single bead on a cord is 19mm. Wearing sets like this looks surprisingly smart, and yet casual.
The beads are well annealed and strong.

Earrings, Mood Swing series, Kate D-W

These are from a collection I call Mood Swings, and they are lots of fun. The stars also shine in the dark. Positively magical, these earrings will change color all day long, not only because the heat from your ear travels into them but also, they can change if you go into sunshine. They hang just over 1 inch long below their sterling silver hooks and the beads themselves are 100mm x 12 mm.

I used to make these beads for children years ago and thought it might be good to make them again. The ship is 23 mm wide and the pendant is 33 mm high with the silver head pin. I put in lots of windows...The glass is well annealed...
