The Caribbean pine is an indigenous tree found on Andros. This unique tree has extremely hard wood that is fire resistant. The tree contains resins just under its bark that suffocates nearby flames. In the past, these trees were heavily harvested for lumber. Unlike the Caribbean pine, the Australian (casuarinas) pine, which is shown in The Beach, is an invasive deciduous tree with soft, wispy, pine-like leaves. Its beauty doesn’t hide the fact that this invasive species is causing erosion of the soil and taking over native habitat.

My dad made the birdbath seen in this piece by pouring cement over a dirt mound. Before the cement completely hardened, he inserted a 4” x 4” piece of wood into the cement which worked as the base of the birdbath. This gift is the focal point of my backyard garden.

The tropical paradise of Andros Island is secondary to its people. Services such as phone, water and electricity are still not available everywhere on the island; there are no casinos, malls or fast-food chains. This young girl standing in front of a pointsettia, attends to her chores. On Andros, the pointsettia is a common garden plant that can grow to heights of 25 feet.
