Hazy Days of Summer No. 1, Print on Canvas

$80.00
This listing is for a 20" x 24" archival giclée print on canvas with a solid color gallery wrap.

It has been professionally printed and mounted on 1 1/2" stretchers and has a wire hanger installed. This print is ready to frame or simply display as-is for a quick, clean and uncluttered presentation in any home or office setting.

For an 8 x 10 unmounted print of this image, please see this listing:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11139126

One day we were returning from an outing to Mt. Hamilton Observatory -- which is a story in and of itself, really -- but it was a long drive, and we stopped to stretch our legs at what appeared to be a non-descript rear entrance to a county park. We walked up a hill, and as we reached the top and could see over the crest we discovered that we were on a levee, and this is the scene that was presented for us. Dean immediatly went back to the car got his camera and proceeded to shoot this photograph. While shooting he was reminded of all the summer days of his youth -- specifically the time when he was eight or nine and was exploring the world while indulging his rather vivid imagination.

This is another location that Dean spent several weeks working to photograph. The hours of driving the treacherous mountain roads in the dark either going to or coming from the lake were well worth the effort.

All photographs created by Dean J.
Beebo ACEO, 4/25

$6.00
ACEO, signed by the artist and numbered. This limited edition art card shows the the wonder and character of one of Earth's most amazing creatures, the banana slug (Ariolimax columbianus).

We were returning to the car on the day Dean found the waterfall seen in our shop photograph titled "Good Chi," and as we were crossing the road Dean looked down to find this gastropod working its way across the road. It was about four inches long and classically colored (most banana slugs are actually brown and blend in with the mud).

This close-up view was taken as it recognised that there was a large thing taking notice of it, and it was checking Dean out with its optic tentacles. Beebo seemed like an apt name for the creature.

ACEO means Art Card Editions and Originals. They are miniature works of art that measure 2.5" X 3.5", the same size as a standard playing card. They are a perfect means to collect and trade original art.

Our ACEOs are made using achival pigment inks rated to last 200+ years and are printed on 100% cotton rag, acid free, achival fine art paper. On the back of each card is printed the image title, the artists name, series number (1 of 25 etc...) and is signed by the artist. Each card is packaged in a clear polypropelene sleeve to enhance and preserve the archival qualities of the image.

Art Cards have a very long and interesting history.

Art cards or miniatures where the rage in the 16th Century. They were mostly portraits and they were sold, not traded or given away. They were the first wallet "photos." Men would have nudes painted of their mistresses on art cards (without their wives knowing), usually by the same artist that would do the big family portraits of their wives. Miniature portraits would be used for exchange when rich people arranged marriages. In fact, this caused a big problem for poor Henry the Eighth, when the artist who painted his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, took a little too much "artistic license." Poor Anne was not up to standard and Henry divorced her.

These cards will enhance your collection of fine art images and make wonderful gifts for family and friends.

All photographs created by Dean J.
Golden Gate Bridge from Fort Baker - Dawn, 8 X 12

$22.00
Dean loves doing dawn shots. No other time of the day gives you quite the same quality of light.

This was shot on one of the rare clear days that come to San Francisco in September. Dean had scouted the location a few weeks prior to the shoot date and knew that he had to get there early, because to get the shot he had to be on the rocks down at the waterline. And maneuvering through this rather treacherous terrain to find the exact right spot was going to take a lot of time and patience. And with dawn shots you get one chance, one two-minute period where everything is just right, and if you miss it you can never get it back.

It was funny, because as soon as Dean set up the camera and got his meter readings and was ready to go, another photographer showed up at the same place. He understandably wanted the same shot but was a little miffed when Dean told him he was 45 minutes late. He still shot that day, but Dean knows it was a second-best angle and he got a lot of glare from the construction lights at the far end of the bridge that are hidden just behind the edge of the island in this image.

All photographs created by Dean J. The sun was shining and there were just a few wisps of fog drifting by. It was a beautiful day and the bridge really stood out in all its grandeur. This image has been described as "perfect" and "timeless." Dean is very proud to say that this image has been added to the permanent collection of the California Museum of History, Women and the Arts as part of their "Only in California" display. The ability to manipulate the images in either color or B/W after shooting is one of the things Dean loves about digital photography.

All photographs created by Dean J. The graceful curve and soft pastel light gives this image an otherworldly feeling that sticks with you. It's almost as though this is a bridge into another reality.

Dean was in town to photograph the Shasta County Municipal Building and was told of the Sundial Bridge and how wonderful it was. He took this with a grain of salt because he didn't expect anything truly spectacular in such an out-of-the-way place.

Dean was very pleasantly surprised to find one of the world's great engineering achievements spanning the Sacramento River. Santiago Calatrava is without a doubt a brilliant engineer and has created not only a wonderful bridge but a true work of art.

The strength and power of the design is incredible and will stand out as one of humanity's greatest achievements in both engineering and art. Dean is still surprised to find it in Redding, CA.

Dean shot this image as he was returning to his hotel to catch some more sleep after doing a series of dawn shots. The title is symbolic of the act and because he was returning to the mundane world in we share our daily experience from the reality of wonder in which he had spent the morning. Dean fondly remembers the cool morning air, birds singing and warm sunlight of that sunrise every time he sees this image.

All photographs created by Dean J. The sun was shining and there were just a few wisps of fog drifting by. It was a beautiful day and the bridge really stood out in all its grandeur. This image has been described as "perfect" and "timeless." Dean is very proud to say that this image has been added to the permanent collection of the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts as part of their "Only in California" display. Dean is still surprised to find it in Redding, CA.

This is a remarkbly powerful image. You can feel how the lightness of the mass of the bridge wants to launch itself into the deep blue sky and fly free but is being held back and anchored by the cables. The urge to break to bonds of reality is very great and this is why there are so many restraints, just like the dreams and aspirations of normal men.

This image was shot at about 5:30 PM. and it was about 110 degrees. Dean had to set the camera up and stand there in the heat with almost no breeze and wait for 45 minutes until the angle of the sun was just right. With the reflected light the temperature was significantly greater than the ambient air temperature. It was painful and difficult for Dean to force himself to be patient, but he endured the discomfort, and the result is well worth it.

All photographs created by Dean J.
$20.00
This image was created soon after Dean learned of his Amerind heritage (he is 1/8th Cherokee). He was contemplating his connection to the world and reevaluating spirituality and his part in the universe. This was a time of changes for him in many ways. He was wallking on the state beach in Half Moon Bay, California, and came across a huge whale skull that had been rescued from the punishment of the surf and brought to the top of the cliffs. He shot this image from the rear of the skull (the circular hole is where the nerve bundle passed through from the brain). This is a manipulated image: Dean took the right half of the image, duplicated it and flopped it to create this wonderful little anthopomorphic figure.

Dean titled this image "God of my fathers" because the American Indians revered the whales and offered them the respect of a deity, and "Child of my sons" because our children will likely be tasked with recreating them from genetic records in a few centuries.

All photographs created by Dean J.
$20.00
This image is absolutly beautiful -- the gold of the columns, the grace of the arches and the solidity of the granite structure embodies the beauty and creativity that mankind aspires to and which hopefully we can pass on to our distant decendants.

Dean titled this "Church of the Diseased Mind" because when he shot it it was the brand new State headquarters of the California Department of Health and Human Services and is only one of four buildings in the complex. The state spent tens or maybe hundreds of millions of dollars to create this wonderful monument to the power of the state -- while simultaneously slashing the budget for health care and food to the poor. Only a diseased mind could casually create such wonder and long lasting beauty while telling those in need, for whom they are responsible, that there was no money for food for the elderly or for medical care for the children.

Dean tried to create a tryptich but his heart wasn't in it. Plus this was soon after the WTC atrocity, and American security guards were letting their totalitrian predelictions run wild. Dean moved a trash can for one shot, and six security guards suddenly appeared out of nowhere and began interrogating him about what he was doing. Dean lost interest after that because it was so depressing. He has the other shots in his files somewhere; maybe he will revisit them someday.

All photographs created by Dean J. Birinyi are ©Dean J.
Hazy Days of Summer No. 7 - Sunrise at Grant Lake, 8x10

$20.00
One day we were returning from an outing to Mt. Hamilton Observatory -- which is a story in and of itself, really -- but it was a long drive, and we stopped to stretch our legs at what appeared to be a non-descript rear entrance to a county park. We walked up a hill, and as we reached the top and could see over the crest we discovered that we were on a dam, and this is the scene that was presented for us. Dean immediately went back to the car got his camera and proceeded to shoot this photograph.

This is the first sunrise image in the series. It was really beautiful out there that day. As Dean arrived he saw the wild pigs crossing the road and a bunch of mourning doves standing on the side of the road. As he approached them a hawk swooped in to catch breakfast but just barely missed.

A break of luck for the dove. Better luck next time Mr. Hawk.

All photographs created by Dean J. Birinyi are ©Dean J. Birinyi, All Rights Reserved. Dean finds the memories and emotions creating these images brings to mind are enriching his life much more than he could ever have imagined. Every time Dean looks at this or his other summertime imagery, he starts to smile remembering those days. He will be shooting more images in this genre in the future, so check back often.

This delightful image is sized and formatted as a 5x7, printed with a 1/4 inch border all around, on archival photo rag paper using archival pigment inks. This image is of a small waterfall just off the main path down to the large waterfall in Castle Rock State Park. We found it when hiking one weekend and Dean returned a few days later to shoot this. It's really easy to see from the path above but beacuse of the rough terrain, nettles and prodigious poison oak, Dean is pretty sure not many people give it more than a glance as they pass by.

This is actually a composite of eight different exposures that Dean manually assembled on the computer. This was the only way to get the contrast of the image under control. It is too small to see in this version, but tjere is an image of a ghostly hand in the water just to the right of the central fall. Dean didn't put it there on the computer; it's just there and everyone who has seen it agrees that it is a hand with all five fingers make out of water.

All photographs created by Dean J. This limited edition art card shows a detail image shot by Dean of the Sundial Bridge in Redding, CA designed by Santiago Calatrava. You will see several other views of this amazing creation in our shop.

He is still surprised to find it in Redding, CA.

ACEO means Art Card Editions and Originals. They are miniature works of art that measure 2.5" X 3.5", the same size as a standard playing card.

This limited edition art card shows the image Dean shot as a promotional piece for his business. He was in a furniture store and spotted this lamp, and his imagination was consumed by it. He borrowed a table and vase from an interior designer client, and this image came out of it.

This is one of Dean's images that "created themselves." During the entire process Dean felt he was being directed; he didn't really think about what he was doing, he just did it as though in a dream.

The lab he was working with at the time was so impressed with the image they made a 48x60 to hang in their reception area.

It is titled "Black and Light #1" because Dean did a whole series of images that were based on the stong saturated colors on a black or dark background. But because San Francisco wanted to show the world how they had recoverd from the 1906 earthquake, they over-built them. Over the past 93 years they have been renovated and reinforced, but the fact that they are still standing at all is a testament to the quality of work and craftsmanship that was common at the turn of the 20th century.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse with Pelican Flight, 8 X 10

$20.00
This is another location that was discovered while exploring the recreational opportunities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The lighthouse at Pigeon Point is the only "classical" lighthouse on the west coast; its height makes it unusual here. The West Coast consists of high cliffs that make it unnecessary to build tall structures to be seen out at sea. Pigeon Point is unusual in that the cliffs here at this critical point are relatively low, and the lighthouse would get lost in the fog without the extra elevation.

Dean spent the better part of a month photographing this lighthouse and came away with many wonderful images at all times of day. This image is on a clear morning just as the sun rose up to fully expose the cliffs and rocks in the water. It was frighteningly cold on this January day, and Dean had risked climbing halfway down the cliff in the dark to capture this particular view. We will add other views as time goes by, so check back often.

All photographs created by Dean J. Birinyi are ©Dean J. Birinyi, All Rights Reserved. Dean is sure they were offended that he would intrude upon their private world, but it was only to bring back these wonderrful images to share with the world.

This limited edition art card shows the image taken by Dean at the Strybing Arboretum in San Francico's Golden Gate Park. Erica had taken him there when we first met, on our first so-called "date." This plant along with several other succulents were right by the main entrance, and their fractal forms were intriguing. When Dean got the chance he returned to take some photos. This morning started off gray and foggy but as the day advanced the sky cleared and became a bright sun shiny wonder. This image was taken just as the fog was clearing the sunlight was still being filtered but was steadily increasing in strength.

ACEO means Art Card Editions and Originals.

The day had been reasonably clear but cold and as the sun went down the fog started to come in. As it got darker and darker the fog got closer and closer and then just as the time was right to capture the glow of the lights the first wisps of fog began to engulf the bridge, lending an air of mystery and romace that we find delightful.

All photographs created by Dean J. The textures, colors and forms of these plants are so striking and well-adapted to the arid environments in which they exist, and seemed so out of place in the context of the park.

This image has always been one of Dean's favorites -- the teeth of the leaves and the imprint of them in the underlying leaves is just amazing. The textures and forms are just wonderful.

All photographs created by Dean J. Birinyi are ©Dean J. Birinyi, All Rights Reserved. Dean was in town to photograph the Shasta County Municipal Building and was told of the Sundial Bridge and how wonderful it was. He took this with a grain of salt because he didn't expect anything truly spectacular in such an out-of-the-way place.

He was very pleasantly surprised to find one of the world's great engineering achievements spanning the Sacramento River. Santiago Calatrava is without a doubt a brilliant engineer and has created not only a wonderful bridge but a true work of art.

The strength and power of the design is incredible and will stand out as one of humanity's greatest achievments in both engineering and art. Dean is still surprised to find it in Redding, CA.

All photographs created by Dean J. Birinyi are ©Dean J. Birinyi, All Rights Reserved. It is based on the golden spiral rather than the rule of thirds. The composition moves dramatically from the lower left corner to the upper right and then hooks back in to the vanishing point of the road. Critics have told Dean this is what lends such an air of sophistication to this scene.

All photographs created by Dean J. Birinyi are ©Dean J. It was just before feeding time and this female was getting very hungry. Dean could tell every time she looked up at him that she was thinking of food. It was a little disconcerting. The fact that she kept chuffing and growling lent to this impression.

The end result is that Dean captured this dynamic image of the nature of this magnificent creature. You can see that she is a truly dangerous animal, but her grace and utter confidence is projected from the page. In this image you can see that as she looks deep into your soul, she is sizing you up as a tasty morsel.

All photographs created by Dean J. Birinyi are ©Dean J. This print is ready to frame or simply display as-is for a quick, clean and uncluttered presentation in any home or office setting.

For an 8 x 10 unmounted print of this image, please see this listing:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11138644
