Gourd with yucca Weaving Catching the Serpent

A unique hardshelled gourd weaving/sculpture, with graceful asymmetry.

Woven with a rare fiber - yucca root. It is naturally reddish and wonderfully textural, with a lovely rustic feel. The yucca is bound with waxed nylon.

Probably the most unique feature of this piece is the handle, which is made from the dried stalk of the same yucca plant that yeilded the roots it is coiled with. Embellished with a large oriental coin with hole in the middle.

As you can see from the last photo, this is a blue ribbon piece, it took first place at the North Carolina Gourd Festival.

Beach Treasure Pouch Necklace for Shell collecting

What a great place to store your shells and other beach treasures! The whole bag is woven, and will hold treasures, but the sand falls right through! The shape of the pouch when wearing is dictated by what you have inside.

This lovely little fetish pouch was hand-woven, using a very ancient weaving technique called Naalbinding (used by Vikings!) It is made of smooth waxed linen. This one is soft colonial blue, but check my other listings for other colors, or for custom options!

Pouch is made to close naturally when it is hung. When tension is removed from the necklace string, it can be opened easily by inserting your fingers in the opening. It is accented with beads, and when it comes to you it contains a smooth stone, ready for you to replace with treasures. Great for wearing to the beach for shell collecting!

Neck string is approximately 25 1/2 inches long.

It is lacquered a beautiful royal blue, stem intact. The bottom of the gourd is coiled with hand-dyed turquoise colored sisal (the fiber of the agave plant,) and bound with red waxed nylon (artificial sinew.) It stands and balances perfectly! A lovely holiday accent for your home,this hand-coiled pine needle basket has pottery poinsettia motifs in red, white and green. Beautiful on your holiday table, makes a great candy, card or key dish.

Basket began with a hand-formed pottery base that I decorated with little poinsettia blossoms in green and red. The white poinsettia was made by letting the natural clay show through. After two firings, i coiled pine needles that i personally selected, one by one, from the freshly fallen. Pine needles are bound in red, green, and black sinew, to better accent the lovely pottery base. Then the basket was embellished with a matching ceramic accent, also hand-painted with a poinsettia.

The basket is beautifully asymmetrical, shape accentuates the "flow" of the pine needles around the base.

Three cute graduated sized horsehair baskets, they nest inside each other.

The largest is 1 5/8" wide and 1/2" tall.
The next little basket is 7/8" wide and 3/8" tall.
The last, baby basket is 5/8" wide and 1/4" tall.
It has a clear glass rochelle bead stitched to the rim as a handle, to make removal easier.

All the baskets are coiled of mixed dark horsehair, stitched with red waxed nylon (also called artificial sinew.)

Basket Lidded Horsehair The Dark Streak

This very large,lidded horsehair basket is made with mostly light horsehair, and bound with artificial sinew (waxed nylon.)

Horsehair baskets are highly prized and collectible because they are difficult to make and very few basketmakers make them.

There is a stripe of mixed dark horsehair through the jar, just above it's widest point, accentuating the lovely "olla" curve.

The lid fits snugly within a rim on the edge of the jar. It takes a skilled basketmaker to weave with horsehair, and more so to make such a snug and perfectly fitting lid.

This basket is one of the larger ones that i make. It is approximately 2 1/2" to the top of the lid. Without lid, it is 1 3/4" approx. At it widest point, it is approx. 1 1/2"

SALE, Basket Horsehair Twist

This is a very unique dark horsehair basket. It is made with 2 "twists." The first twist is an undulation in the shape of the basket, accentuated by the feminine "olla" or water jar, shape. The second twist is in the stitch pattern. This is very difficult to do. The red stitching spirals, or twists, up the side of the jar. This requires constant stop/starting of the different colors of thread while coiling, and is very challenging. (called chasing, or chase coiling, and this is not available for order, i don't plan on doing it again!)

Horsehair baskets are highly prized and collectible because they are difficult to make and very few basketmakers make them.

Bound with red and blue waxed nylon (artificial sinew.)

The carved stone horse is provided for scale, so you can compare the size of this relatively large basket with the other, smaller ones I offer.

This basket measures approximately 2 1/4" tall, and 2" wide. this particular basket is also infused with wax, which preserves the "twist" and makes the basket very firm, not soft and malleable like most of my horsehair baskets.

This little "trophy" is hand-coiled of dark horsehair and silvery metallic thread. The stem is metal, and it is soldered to the filigrees which are the center of the base and bowl of the trophy.

Horsehair baskets are highly prized and collectible because they are difficult to make and very few basketmakers make them. The tiny ones are particularly difficult to make because it requires great dexterity.

The carved stone horse is not included with the trophy, it is there for relative scale, so you can see how large this item is, compared to the other ones I list.

"Trophy" is approximately 1 1/2" tall, and 1 1/16" wide.

Basket Upcycled Patchwork

This basket is almost entirely upcycled.

The base is a piece of plastic that was colored and shrunk. The recycle symbol is still visible on the bottom side. It is also signed and named on the bottom (by me.)

The fibers include snippets of yarn and fiber left over from other projects, in part, including polyester, paper, nylon, and cotton. Then there are the garments, that were cut into yarn. This one includes some retired children's clothing, including a pair of blue shorts, some blue terry cloth, and a little Carter's flannel shirt. there is also a little white cotton sheeting, which is at least 70 years old...and getting smaller all the time. Oh yes, there is also plastic netting from those vegetable bags...see the red?

Embellishments include little rosettes from vegetable bags, as well as buttons from the Carter's shirt, and then a few glass and wood beads.

The whole thing is bound with new artificial sinew/waxed nylon.

This whole adorable, recycled, upcycled, deconstructed and repurposed basket measures approximately 4 1/4" x 4" x 1 3/8"

Vibrantly colored basket began with a hand-formed piece of stoneware, fired to cone 6.

Then many different fibers were coiled around it to make a bowl shape.

Fibers include upcycled pieces of cotton, linen, polyester, sial, and more in shades of blue, aqua, teal, light yellow and browns. Embellished with beads around the base, in the weaving itself, and dangling from the edge.

This is one of the smallest horsehair baskets i have made,only 7mm x 9mm,(~1/4")so I am calling it "Gnat." A perfectly lovely olla or water vase shape, it would be a great dollhouse accent, or something for the smallest shadowbox! Wonderful for any miniture collector or horse enthusiast.

Horsehair baskets are rarely made because it is challenging to work small, and the hair is springy and slippery. The most difficult baskets are the smallest, and this one qualifies as one of the smallest i have ever made. It cramps the fingers, and crosses the eyes to work this small, and i have to stop weaving after only one this small.

This is a wall sculpture made from dyed pine needles and polymer clay. The pine needles are space dyed and varegated, there are mixed colors in there, sort of purply and tan/black.

the center is a face, this is one of my first "face" baskets (see my website for more.) This is one of the two most unusual, off-beat ones i have made.

It looks sort of like a volcano, but there is a face where the crater should be. There is a "lava flow" coming out of the face's mouth. the face is all bumpy, and blackish/brown, like ʻAʻā lava is (a Hawaiian word for a certain kind of lava) at least that is what i was going for... The lava flows down the side of the volcano shape and pools near the base.

This can be placed on the table, as a sculpture, but it also has a little loop on the backside, so it can hang on a nail on the wall.

This is an unusual gourd piece, everything is made of gourds....

the wasp nest is a large gourd with lots of little egg gourds cut in half, and it is papered with gourd paper (made from gourd guts.) the wasp itself is made of three smaller gourds.

the wasp is gently poseable, and can be moved about. Her legs are wires, and they are curled at the end so she can be posed on top of the nest, or whereever.

My own version of a hummingbird nest! Hand-coiled of mixed dark horsehair, on a tiny branch. Shown with "eggs" (beans) and lichen or moss...eggs and moss included in listing, you can display with or without.

Very few people make horsehair baskets. The tiny scale and very slippery, springy material make them a challenge, and so they are considered the trademark of a very skilled basketmaker. I have made hundreds of horsehair baskets, and won awards for many of them in fine art shows and basketry exhibitions across the country.

These pouches were first made for my son, who loves to carry around a trinket...a rock, a marble, a shark tooth. A custom pouch allows you to order exactly what you want in an amulet or treasure pouch. All pouches are approx. 2" x 1 1/2". If you have an item you want to keep in the pouch, it should fit inside (or through) a regular toilet paper cardboard tube.

Your choices:

A. What color do you like? If your favorite color is, for instance, blue, i can send you a picture of all the blue threads i have in stock, and you can choose one.

B. choose from 3 styles:
1. Easy open necklace. Automatically close when tension is put on the neck string.

2. "yawning" style necklace, which has a separate drawstring for the opening of the bag. This gives you the choice of either closing the pouch all the way, or leaving it open a little bit. Please see the photos 2 and 4 for examples of the second style of pouch opening.

3. Drawstring wristlet, with one or 2 drawstrings. This style bag can be hung from the wrist or the belt.

C. Choice of more substantial, hand twisted 2-ply cord for necklace, or single ply.

D. custom bead colors/styles

E. Custom Length of drawstring cord

I can make it according to your specifications, and you can choose the fiber. Choices include: smooth waxed linen, soft cotton fiber, and polished hemp.

I made this doll as part of a challenge by my fiber guild, and it was entered in the NC Gourd Festival, as part of an exhibit of dolls from ‘round the world, and we took 1st place.

The doll is constructed of 7 different gourds, glued together, all body parts, including the eyes, were made of gourd parts. The doll is painted and the body covering is woven raffia.

This doll does not stand, it has a loop of raffia at the head from which it may hang. Counting the hanging loop, it is almost 8” tall, and about 4” wide.

Wall Sculpture Pine Needle - Catching the Pale Moon

This is the second smallest wall piece from my series "Catching the Moon." This one is coiled of natural pine needles, which is very unusual. Usually they are made of dyed materials. It is which is reinforced with wax to make it durable and make it stand the test of time. The pine needles are bound with artificial sinew.

The face in the weaving is porcelain.

The weaving in the center (white netting)waxed nylon, this technique is called teneriffe. This one has a unique teneriffe that looks sort of like a magnifying glass or hand mirror in shape.

The back of the weaving has a little hook, so it can be hung on the wall, or placed in a shadowbox. It can also just be propped on a stand.

This sculpture is #19 in the series of sculptures, and is marked on the back with the number on my tag and mark. Currently there are 23 in the series, they are being shown at Fine Art Shows across the nation.

This one will never slime you! He has been through alot of gardens, not only can you tell from his size, but his shell back is all scarred from his close scrapes!

Scars on the gourd were made while the gourd was growing. Pine Needles have been reinforced with an acrylic, and the last photos shows the floating coil gaps, which allow you to see into the gourd opening.

Lovely colored basket begins with a hand-formed piece of stoneware, fired to cone 6.

Many different fibers were coiled around it to make an asymmetrical bowl shape. Beaded accents on the outside and on the inside. The outer bead grouping includes a handmade clay bead, glazed to match the base, with another tiny dragonfly on it!

Fibers include upcycled pieces of cotton, linen, polyester, thrums, yarns, paper, and more in shades of tan, light aqua, green, and browns.

It is coiled of mixed dark horsehair, the lid and the bottom are both set on jewelry filigrees, which are lacy silver insets. The lid fits very snugly, it has to be pulled off, does not fall off. The inside lip of the olla shape is flared, which makes it fit tightly and gives it an attractive shape.

This freeform bowl is coiled of many different fibers - wool, polyester, acrylic, cotton, metallic threads (gold tone,)yarns, linen, etc. some of them are upcycled. This one has lots of fuzziness to it, from the cut fibers.

It was begun on a handmade (by me) stoneware piece (fired to cone 6.) It has been textured with fern and grass motifs (made by pressing them into the clay.) Accented with glass and wood beads.

This is sometimes called a "reach-in" basket, as it is lower on one side than the other. It makes a nice catchall for keys or change, if you don't mind covering up the plant designs in the bottom.

It is approximately 9" x 6" x 3".

Lovely round bowl, coiled with a combination of natural long leaf pine needles and naturally dark and textural walnut leaf stems. The walnut leaf stems make a lovely dark band around the weaving, echoing the natural rings in the lovely wood center. Bound with black waxed nylon.

Many people coil with pine needles, but very few use the walnut leaf stems. These are the center stem of the multiple leaf of the walnut tree. The leaves fall off the trees in the fall, and later, sometimes in the winter or spring, the leaf stems are pushed off the tree. They are hard and woody and require some prepartion and skill in order to weave them into the basket.

This lovely large horsehair bowl is rimmed with tiny glass beads, which gave it the name "Glorified Feed Bucket."

It is coiled of mixed dark horsehair, bound with artificial sinew. The mixed hair color in this basket makes it particularly striking, and emphasizes the individual hairs.

Measuring 1 5/8" across, and about 3/4" tall, this would be lovely in a shadowbox, or for collectors.

It is large enough to hold rings or tiny tresures, stones or a pair of earrings.

Horsehair Treasure Box Athena's Keep

This lovely little horsehair box is one-of-a-kind.

The inside box is a silver filigree, of the sort used for wedding keepsakes. Painstakingly coiled over it is mixed dark horsehair, bound with lovely turquoise blue sinew. Sinew is no longer made in this color. The new blue is much darker and not as striking, in my opinion.

Once the horsehair was coiled on this box, top and bottom, the edge was decorated with many seed beeds in many different shades of blue and purple. The lid is also beaded elaborately - the beads are on wire, and are gently poseable. The center of the lid bears a little glass owl.

It is named "Athena's Keep." Owls are attendant to the Greek Goddess Pallas Athena, who is the goddess of the heroic endeavor, the patroness of weaving and craft, and of wisdom and philosophy. Horses are often associated with Athena as well, so this "keep" seems particularly appropriate to name after her.

The box stands approximately 2 1/4" tall, and is about 2 1/2" in diameter. It is marked by the maker (me) on the inside with a bead giving the date of creation and my initials. This is only the second box of this sort that I have made, and as they are very time-consuming and elaborate, it may be the last one!

These are art notecards with my artwork on the front. It is a set of 4, identical cards, all with the same image. This card is also sold separately and in mixed sets, please see other items in my shop.

Depicted is my work, "3 Namas: Nama Salamander, Nama Nuestra Sangre and Nama Legarto."

Each notecard is actually two in one:

1. a notecard
2. a detachable, frame-able image

It works like this: you send it to someone with your personal note inside. The recipient can remove the image from the front of the card and frame it, like a mini art print. The image is actually a postcard, but the back will have glue residue on it, and so cannot be used as a postcard any longer. Postcard is 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" and will fit in a 4x6 frame.

The notecard is printed on the back with the artist's name, the name of the basket, the photographer credit, and the artist's website. The interior of the card is blank. It is made of heavy cardstock, and these were printed by a printer, not run off on a computer. It comes with a matching envelope. The card is 4 5/8" x 6 1/4".
